build system for cutting edge software

Hi, I use centos as it is stable and provides all the software that is needed for everyday use. However, sometimes I would like to use fresh software that is not available as a package. Compiling from source is indeed an option but because centos uses oldish sources not only the sought package should be built but a lot of other packages. An idea is to build it in a directory, as much independent as it is possible from the installed libraries on the centos installation. Is there an automated build system for such an endeavour? - Gergely

Centos backup tools

Hi all! I'm building a raid box to use for backups, connectivity will be either USB3 or esata. Looking for suggestions on backup software I can use. I know there's rsync, which may be a good solution. I also find backupPC at epel, backintime also at epel, kbackup. DejaDup looks interesting, but none of the repos I'm set up to use shows it being available. some small details: I plan to use this to keep backups of my centos desktop, which has two 320GB drives in linux RAID-1. The backup box will have two 1TB drives, also in RAID-1. It will be a two drive enclosure with PS and cooling, with USB3 or esata, but not networking. I was thinking that it would be nice to have a full backup followed by a set of incrementals, and software that allows access to the state of the system for any specific date (similar to a source control system), but it may be that nothing free and/or uncomplicated will offer such a feature. wpa_supplicant - an utter failure, for some reason

Hello listmates, I feel a little embarrassed but I can not get through this one and any help will be much appreciated. I have a Broadcom WiFi adapter in a 64-bit CentOS 6.5 laptop. Trying to get it connect automatically - and it just would not - no error messages, nothing. With the same config NetworkManager connects without a hitch, I have to compile the wl module out of an SRPM - but after that it seemed to work fine under the NetworkManager but not automatically, via wpa_supplicant. Thanks in advance for any and all advice. The WiFi security is WPA. Cheers, Boris.

SCSI not settling???

I'm getting a lot of this at boottime: udev still not settled. Waiting. udevadm settle - timeout of 0 seconds reached, the event queue contains: /sys/module/scsi_wait_scan (11707) udev still not settled. Centos 6.4 How to increase console font size.

Just installed 6.4 on and old Dell laptop and the font only takes up half the screen. I have tried setfont and altering grub.conf vga= but it does not work. I have read that I must disable uEFI but have not idea how to do that. Can anyone help? I only use this machine in console mode and I just want the full screen font size that I used to have in 5.x versions. Thanks, Richard

Sorry for the messed up replies. The web based icloud interface forces the writer to reply at the top of the email and if you try to write at the bottom by deleting a few lines of the message or selecting the whole message, deleting it, adding some spaces and then pasting back and go to the end it and adding a reply, it kills the indentation. -wes

Large file system idea

This idea is intruiging... Suppose one has a set of file servers called A, B, C, D, and so forth, all running CentOS 6.5 64-bit, all being interconnected with 10GbE. These file servers can be divided into identical pairs, so A is the same configuration (diks, processors, etc) as B, C the same as D, and so forth (because this is what I have; there are ten servers in all). Each file server has four Xeon 3GHz processors and 16GB memory. File server A acts as an iscsi target for logical volumes A1, A2,...An, and file server B acts as an iscsi target for logical volumes B1, B2,...Bn, where each LVM volume is 10 TB in size (a RAID-5 set of six 2TB NL-SAS disks). There are no file systems directly built on any of the LVM volumes. Each member of a server pair (A,B) are in different cabinets (albeit in the same machine room) and are on different power circuits, and have UPS protection. A server system called S (which has six processors and 48 GB memory, and is not one of the file servers), acts as iscsi initiator for all targets. On S, A1 and B1 are combined into the software RAID-1 volume /dev/md101. Similarly, A2 and B2 are combined into /dev/md102, and so forth for as many target pairs as one has. The initial sync of /dev/md101 takes about 6 hours, with the sync speed being around 400 MB/sec for a 10TB volume. I realize that only half of the 10-gig bandwidth is available while writing, since the data is being written twice. All of the /dev/md10X volumes are LVM PV's and are members of the same volume group, and there is one logical volume that occupies the entire volume group. An XFS file system (-i size=512, inode64) is built on top of this logical volume, and S NFS-exports that to the world (an HPC cluster of about 200 systems). In my case, the size of the resulting file system will ultimately be around 80 TB. The I/O performance of the xfs file system is most excellent, and exceeds by a large amount the performance of the equivalent file systems built with such packages as MooseFS and GlusterFS: I get about 350 MB/sec write speed through the file system, and up to 800 MB/sec read. I have built something like this, and by performing tests such as sending a SIGKILL to one of the tgtd's, I have been unable to kill access to the file system. Obviously one has to manually intervene on the return of the tgtd in order to fail/hot-remove/hot-add the relevent target(s) to the md device. Presumably this will be made easier by using persistent device names for the targets on S. One could probably expand this to supplement the server S with a second server T to allow the possibility of failover of the service should S croak. I haven't tackled that part yet. So, what failure scenarios can take out the entire file system, assuming that both members of a pair (A,B) or (C,D) don't go down at the same time? There's no doubt that I haven't thought of something. Disabling IRQ 16

Hi list, I've a problem with my system on CentOS 6.5 x86_64 on a workstation. During utilizzation, after several hours after boot (6/7 hours) I get an error: Disabling IRQ #16 and after this seems be that 3d acceleration is unloaded. This is a workstation with a dedicated vga (nvidia gt450) and 3 nics. This problem started when I've plugged the third nic. Without third nic all works very good. from /proc/interrupt: 16: 110 647 64858 0 0 0 0 0 IO-APIC-fasteoi ehci_hcd:usb1, ahci, eth3, nvidia I've tried to boot the system with irqpool without great results. I've tried to change my new third gb nic with a fast ethernet 10/100, thinking it was broken but the problem still persists. I've tried to replace my vga card with another, the problem still persists. Remember to be especially aware if you have systems that can potentially have code uploaded and run (ftp to httpd vhost or improper php config and file ownership/permissions). This does not affect el5 ... an el6 update is pending. https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2014-0196
