CENTOS-6.5 I had a kvm guest shutdown by oom-killer this morning. I have the syslog entries that pertain to this but they tell me little beyond that it happened. SELinux issue?

I've recently built a new mail server with centos6.5, and decided to bite the bullet and leave SELinux running. I've stumbled through making things work and am mostly there. I've got my own spam and ham corpus as mbox files in /home/user/Mail/learned. These files came from my backup of the centos 5 server this machine is replacing. Odd issue: power_saving

On a running system, I was just logging in, and it took for-bloody-ever. I run top, and ok, a load of 5 still shouldn't do that; we have folks that do put real loads on these systems. But top shows me power_saving frequently coming to the top, with a 94% - 100% CPU usage, and there's two threads of power_saving. Add to this that I don't *ever* remember seeing such a kernel thread. So, can I kill either or both threads? Googling some, I see someone suggesting: acpi_pad.disable=1 already added in grub.conf ;-) (after having `modprobe -r acpi_pad`, which solves directly the load issue) Good idea or not? mark

dumb developer explodes yum

hey guys, One of our developers DESTROYED both yum and rpm on one of the development machines with an rm command. And guess who's lucky enough to get to fix this mess? *raises hand* So I hope y'all don't mind me turning to you once again for some advice. You've been wonderful in the past. Pavlov's dogs as they say. At any rate, I've managed to fix rpm (yay) by copying it over from another machine of similar architecture and os. I'm not sure if the fix is perfect, but I can indeed install rpm's again with that command. Yum however is proving to be more of a challenge. And I am in the midst of some dependencies currently. I found this guide on the net which seemed reasonable and that I could adapt to my needs. http://deadlockprocess.wordpress.com/2010/07/18/how-to-reinstall-rpm-and-yu… However installing this rpm : rpm-libs-4.4.2-37.el5.i386.rpm Asks for a bunch of libraries. Hardware watchdog timer, no IPMI, no /dev/watchdog

Hi all, I've got a Portwell NANO-6060 board I am testing out for potential use in a project of ours. One of the nice features of this board, beyond nice NICs, is that it has a hardware watchdog timer. The problem is that I don't get a /dev/watchdog device file. I know the hardware works, because when I enable it in BIOS, the box will reboot after the timer expires. However, without the /dev/watchdog device, I don't have a way to kick it. In dmesg, I see: NMI watchdog enabled, takes one hw-pmu counter. So it *looks* like it's there. procmail and dovecot

Does anyone know how to get procmail and dovecot to play happily together with mboxes? I'm on Centos 6.5, fully patched. I'm getting tons of lock timeouts which is killing performance. I tried using dovecot's lda from procmail, which prompted many adjustments to selinux, which I managed, but it still gives permission problems, and I haven't succeeded in getting it to deliver mail. Just wondering if you had the chance of testing the network speed with iperf from host to host yet? This is like the first thing to do while doing a full debug upside-down. No matter what disks you have but note that each and one of them has a maximum IOps limit which sometimes you can hit in a way. as already suggested by others in the past you can use a binary search dividing the issue one part at a time network.. disk.. controller.. driver.. software(since the software is proven to work). squid proxy, https and apple store

Hi, I'm a bit confused regarding the connection of a Mac OS X system to the app store by the app store client. Squid is configured using ncsa_auth and I can access https and http websites without a problem. But the app store app is not logging in. yum install to a portable location

I have googled, read the man page, and such. What I am trying to do is install applications to a NFS mounted drive, where the libraries and everything are locally installed on that filesystem so that it is portable across servers (I have over 100 servers which each need specific applications installed via yum and we do not want to install 100 copies). We tried the yum relocate and it was not available on Centos6.4 and yum --nogpgcheck localinstall R-3.1.0-5.el6.x86_64 I want the binaries and all dependencies in the application filesystem which is remote mounted on all servers. Google chrome vs network settings proxy?

I started using chrome on the RHEL7 beta after some firefox hangs - but maybe this behavior is generic. I have the system 'network settings/network proxy' set to use squid on another host for connections out of the private range we use. This proxy requires authentication so I can always tell the first time a browser uses it. However, I can start a chrome connection to gmail and it just goes direct (which happens to work, I just prefer the proxy which will use a different outbound route). If I go to any non-google site, it uses the proxy and will pop up the expected authentication dialog on the first connection. Does anyone know (a) why it bypasses the proxy when going to a google site, (b) why it doesn't have its own internal proxy settings, or (c) how to fix it? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

umask setting in /etc/profile not working

Hey all, We have the following set in /etc/profile : umask 0002 so that it will affect all users. That should create all files as 664 and all directories as 775 if I'm not mistaken. Well I logged into the machine after this was set and just created a file as one of the users who complained about permissions settings on files. And this is what I saw: [user1@qa_host ~]$ ls -l test_qa -rw-r--r-- 1 user1 domain^users 0 Jun 11 10:08 test_qa I even tried logging out and logging in again just to be sure. I still got the same result. So my question is why would the file not have the permissions specified by the umask command in /etc/profile ? I really need this to work for the users. issue_discards in lvm.conf

I decided that the next time I reformatted my main desktop computer (this one) I would have a ssd installed in it to use for the boot drive. Now that Centos 7 is on the horizon, I'm thinking that the time is approaching when I'll want to do that. The last time I set up a computer with a ssd in it, that was the only drive that it had. I changed issue_discards=0 to issue_discards=1 into the /etc/lvm/lvm.conf file, set up cron to run fstrim on that drive on a weekly basis, and that was it. Since this next setup will have both a ssd and a regular hard drive in it, is there some way that I should specify that issue_discards=1 applies only to the ssd or does that matter? I see that the explanation in the lvm.conf file says "If set to 1, discards will only be issued if both the storage and kernel provide support." so I'm left with the impression that the issue_discards setting won't affect a regular hard drive even if it is set to 1. -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ www.melvilletheatre.com

USB blues

I have a freshly built, updated EL6 system and am having problems with USB stability - at boot everything works fine but within a few hours, USB devices start disappearing randomly. At first I though the USB devices were suspect, but removing the suspect devices and an accessory PCIE USB card hasn't changed anything. As of now, a single USB device is working. (which is lucky, it hosts the OS) I've rebooted the server several times trying to diagnose the problem. After a reboot, everything works great - for a while. Is this a driver issue or just a bum motherboard/chipset? The system is built based on the SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O available here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182253 According to the OS compatibility matrix, the most recent CentOS 6.5 is supported: http://www.supermicro.com/support/resources/OS/C204.cfm and all yum updates have been applied. Devices read/wrote fine. ata9.00 HD errors are known, it's the old ATA O/S drive. XFS project quota and samba

Hi, I managed to configure project quotas on a xfs device on a centos 6.5 server. (just pquota in fstab, no grquota, rebooted server....) Reporting the quota settings and usage looks good. But mounting a smb-share with the proect quota enabled on my os x client shows much less space used (3GB) and 0% free. Currently 650 GB are used, the quota limit is set to 1TB. My user I'm mounting the smb-share has no quota limits set. The users are in ldap. Any suggestions or hints what might be wrong? Thanks and best regards . LDAP login problem for CentOS 6.5

Hi, We are experiencing a problem to use LDAP user accounts to login into a CentOS system. A fresh 6.5 system was installed recently to become a central server. Both OpenLDAP and 389 Directory Server were installed and configured (not at the same time) with groups and normal user accounts. The server was configured to use LDAP authentication (through authconfig and system-config-authentication). First, the LDAP user wasn't identified by running the 'id' command. The same with SSH. Although ldapsearch listed all objects correctly. Observing /var/log/secure had shown that the user is not identified at all (no uid etc.). Following another article, POSIX details (uid + gid, and set gid to some LDAP group) were set for that user and the 'id' command was successful. However, still, SSH connections are refused and the log states: "Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info" (for pam_sss). The secure log shows that user details are unavailable (uid=0,gid=0...) to sshd. Locally, when a root performs "su user", the login is successful, home is created and the secure log state authentication is performed by pam_unix, contrast to pam_sss. Need to mention that we've tried to follow most of the literature online (RedHat directory server, CentOS OpenLDAP client setup and many other resources). None were found to be complete enough to bring a system to a working state where users are able to login and authenticate. In addition, system-config-authentication requires the use of LDAPS or LDAP with TLS. Only command line tools are able to configure simple LDAP (no TLS or SSL). However, even being a security measure, we'd like to avoid all the (serious) burden of working with certificates at first for simple experimentation. Any comment or insight will be helpful. In addition, any link to where we can find a step-by-step guide to install an (working) LDAP server with a client, will be more than appreciated. Many thanks, Moti.
