How to configure user accounts without NIS

The company where I work is mostly a Windows shop, but I run a few CentOS servers and desktops. I have configured my systems as follows with Kickstart: authconfig --enablemd5 --passalgo=sha512 --enablenis --nisdomain=XXX \ --nisserver=nis1.XXX.com,nis2.XXX.com --useshadow --enablekrb5 \ --krb5realm=XXX.COM --krb5kdc=ldap.XXX.com --krb5adminserver=ldap.XXX.com The /etc/nsswitch.conf file looks like this: passwd: files nis shadow: files nis group: files nis The NIS services are provided by the Windows Domain controllers using Windows Unix Services (or something similarly named). This allows anyone that’s in the NIS database to log into any CentOS system with their Windows username and password. Home directories are automounted from a big NAS box (and are also available on Windows). This all works great most of the time. However, if the network or the NIS server goes down, the CentOS system just hangs. For CentOS 7 I'd like to make the systems more robust to network failures. I could create local accounts (I believe there is a way to autocreate an account and a home directory upon login), but I'm not sure how to go about it. This also implies that the home directories will not be shared among the systems, so ssh keys will have to be manually copied to the local home directories. Ideally, I'd like to get rid of NIS altogether and use LDAP and Kerberos for everything, but I don't know if that is feasible. I think these are the only services that we currently rely on NIS for: - passwd file - group file - automount maps (including auto.home for home directories) Before I go re-inventing the wheel, I'd like to find out how others manage multiple users on multiple systems using a central service. And in case it wasn’t obvious, I want to use the same usernames and passwords that are used in the Windows environment. Thanks, Alfred

apache server-status permission denied

Hey all, I'm having a slightly weird issue with apache server-status on just one of my nodes. I did get your message and I simply have not had time to test its implementation as it necessarily involves a restart of the test system. I am trying to discover if there is some way of restarting a headless server and use a specific grub entry instead of the default. I want to leave the default unchanged until I can prove that any manual changes I make do not negatively impact a system restart. Suggestiong for a tablet computer to run Centos-6/7?

I have an iPad Air. Nice kit and good battery life but experience has shown the iPad is just a little too opaque and network dependent for my taste. I was wondering if there existed a similarly sized/robust tablet that can run CentOS-6/7 that anyone would recommend? I am looking from something that I can take on international trips that I can scrub on a regular basis. But, I also desire the software that I am familiar with (CentOS, SSH, Open/Libre-Office, Inkscape, Tor Browser, Jitsi, etc.). I do not really need a GarageBand/iTunes replacement. But I do want a USB connection and the ability to run stock CentOS, not some specialised fork thereof. I did the Google thing but that has not provided me any clear recommendations. Ubuntu seems to be the most popular distribution for these things and I am reluctant to invest the time to learn the idiosyncrasies of yet another Linux distribution. Hi, Can we upgrade the OpenSSL version on earlier CentOS Versions 6.2/6.3/6.4 with the latest Openssl version which has all the latest openssl vulnerability fixes from Cent OS repo. Will there be any dependency with the openssl version with CentOS versions upgrading openssl 1.0.0 to openssl 1.0.1e latest version. Can we upgrade with the latest OPENSSL version on older CentOS Versions as there are no updates from CentOS for the older versions of openssl's. Thanks, Srikanth

Create Virtual Machine via HTTP or FTP

Hi, I'm trying to create a Virtual Machine using Network Install mode (I tried HTTP and FTP). The HTTP/FTP server where the installation files are located is the Host Machine. The URL that I'm using is: http://192.168.1.104/inst and the Automatic detect option detects the OS without problem. When the installation starts I got an error: Unable to retrieve http://192.168.1.104/inst/images/install.img I tried different path but I always get the same error. The host machine is a Centos 6.2 (2.6.32.-220.el6.x86_64) I really appreciate any help with this problem. Thanks in advance,

Analyzing the MBR

Is there any tool for analysing the MBR on a computer? I know one can just dd it and see roughly what it contains. But surely one should be able to work out the exact content of the MBR and the neighbouring sectors read at boot time? I had a difficult day, probably due to my ignorance, which would have been solved at once by such a tool. I had taken one of three hard disks out of my home server (to see exactly what it was, as smartctl said it was not in its database) and this had the effect of altering the order of the disks in the BIOS, preventing re-booting. It was only after I had re-installed CentOS in a spare partition that I realized what had happened. Incidentally, before this I had tried what I take to be the standard way of solving this problem, by running a CentOS Live USB stick, mounting the root partition and trying to chroot to this, but that did not work - chroot on the stick would not run, and neither would chroot on the disk. I'm wondering if there was some other method I could have tried? For example, I tried running a Fedora netinstall USB stick, which has a "Try to repair the system" option in Troubleshooting. This saw the system OK, but did not have grub-install on it. hey all, I'm trying to figure out how to use apache's mod_status module to figure out which of the web servers in a farm of six are processing more requests than others. I'm writing a script to grep out requests per second from the status module like this: [root@uszmpwslp014lc ~]# GET http://$(hostname -i)/server-status | grep -i requests/sec <dt>4.08 requests/sec - 80.9 kB/second - 19.8 kB/request</dt> That works ok. And next I'm grepping it back down and awking it to just the part I'm interested in: [root@uszmpwslp014lc ~]# GET http://$(hostname -i)/server-status | grep -i -e request -e requests/sec | grep -i -v -e currently -e code -e ss | awk '{print $1}' <dt>4.08 But now I need to get rid of just the <dt> in front of the 4.08? That brought to mind that I once had RVM installed on that account. Further, I recalled I once had run into a bug with an early development version of RVM due to it overriding cd in a shell function, which is not an alias but is similar enough for most purposes. I cannot recall what that issue was but at least the memory of it put me on the right track. So I grepped for CD in ~/\.* and found an RVM related cd function in .bash_profile which did not escape $1. I changed that reference to "$1" and the problem was thereby fixed. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I do have a few residual questions however: 1. What does the 1+ in the shell expansion ${1+"$@"} mean and do? 2. I know that $0 returns the shell name or shell script file name. How does ${0##*/} differ in effect from $0. 3.
