Hello everyone, Excuse the title. I'm trying to do something very specific that goes against some common assumptions. I am aware of how Linux uses available memory to cache. This, in almost all cases, is desirable. I've spent years explaining to users how to properly read the free output. I'm now trying to increase VM density on host systems (by host, I mean the physical system, not the underlying guest machines). VMWare can over-allocate memory as long as it's not being used. Because of caching, from VMWare's perspective, all Linux memory is being "used". I am aware of the inherent risks in over-allocation of resources on a VMWare system.This tuning is strictly for development systems where performance and stability are not as critical. The increase in vm density is an acceptable tradeoff. My questions: 1) What options are available in CentOS to limit the page cache? SuSe has vm.pagecache_limit_mb and vm.pagecache_limit_ignore_dirty which, in conjunction with swappiness tweaks, appears to do what I need. 2) Any experience with enabling /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/run on non-KVM workloads? As KSM only applies to non-pagecache memory, it doesn't immediately help me here but could be incrementally useful (https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/vm/ksm.txt) 3) Is there any way to control /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches and limit it to a number of entries or age? Dropping the filesystem cache, though it unmarks those pages, has performance implications. Thanks in advance for any input or links.

Cannot boot

Kernell

Intel SSD

Hi I have a supermicro server, motherboard is with C612 chipset and beside that with LSI3108 raid controller integrated. Two Intel SSD DC S3710 200GB. OS: Centos 7.1 up to date. My problem is that the Intel SSD Data Center Tool (ISDCT) does not recognize the SSD drives when they connected to the standard S-ATA ports on the motherboard, but through the LSI raid controller is working. Does somebody know what could be the problem? I talked to the Intel support and they said the problem is that Centos is not supported OS ... only RHEL 7. But if not supported should not work on the LSI controlled neither. Thanks, -- Levi

CentOS7 kickstart failed ( no such option: --bytes-per-inode)

Dear All, I'm trying to create a kickstart installer. I specified an option --byes-per-inode to 'logvol' command, but I got a message "No such option: --bytes-per-inode" during installation. Does anybody know a solution? Hi, folks, I've got it set up, and it alleges that it's backing up Windows. However, when I try to run a restore for a Windows box, in bconsole, I say restore, then from most recent, then the client, and I want to select files. It builds its directory tree (it says), then tells me it's at c:/ (*Nix, not Win backslash)... and there's nothing there. The fileset stanza says to back up File = "c:/Users" Am I doing something wrong? Do I need a separate template stanza just for Windows? mark

Running Fedora under CentOS via systemd-nspawn?

tl;dr - Is anybody "running" a Fedora system via systemd-nspawn under CentOS? Long version: Before CentOS 7, I used chroot to create "lightweight containers" where I could cleanly add extra repos and/or software without the risk of "polluting" my main system (and potentially ending up in dependency hell). The primary driver for this was MythTV, which has dozens of deps that span multiple repos. Without "containing" the MythTV installation within a chroot environment, I would inevitably lead to conflicts when doing a yum update. When I upgraded to CentOS 7, I found out that systemd-nspawn is "chroot on steroids". After figuring it all out, I replicated my MythTV "container", and things were great. Now I have a need for a particular piece of software: HandBrake. I found this site[1] that packages it for both Fedora and CentOS. But the CentOS version is a little older, as the latest HandBrake requires gtk3. The latest version is available for Fedora however. So I thought, what if I could "run" Fedora under systemd-nspawn. Well, I definitely *can* do it. I copied the base Fedora filesystem layout off the Live CD, then booted into it via systemd-nspawn. I was able to add repos (including the one for HandBrake), and actually install then run the HandBrake GUI. So while this does work, I'm wondering if it's safe? I'm thinking that at least some of the Fedora tools assume that they are running under a proper Fedora kernel, whereas in my scheme, they are running under a CentOS kernel. I'm sure there have been changes to the kernel API between the CentOS kernel and the Fedora kernel. Am I risking system stability by doing this? firewalld rule syntax

I'm still learning firewalld obviously, and I am having trouble groking the documentation to understand how to do this. I know I could do an iptables direct, but that doesn't seem like the "right" way to do it. What I'm trying to do is allow a specific service, only for a specific ip. Effectively, SNMP should be allowed form a specific IP address (the systems monitor). What would be the most correct way of doing this? Create a zone for the snmp, then add the associated interface to that zone? firewall-cmd --zone=monitoring --add-source=1.2.3.4/32 firewall-cmd --zone=monitoring --add-service=snmp firewall-cmd --zone=monitoring --add-interface=ens192 firewall-cmd --runtime-to-permanent Would this be an appropriate approach? Greetings, One of my biggest frustrations with CentOS 7 has been firewalld. Essentially all of the documentation just flat doesn't work. One common thing that needs to be done is to change the zone of an interface, however I've tried: firewall-cmd --permanent --zone=internal --change-interface=ens192 firewall-cmd --permanent --zone=internal --add-interface=ens192 I've also tried setting in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ens192: ZONE=internal ZONE="internal" No matter what, when firewalld starts, ens192 will be in the public zone. What am I doing wrong? Hi, I am setting up my development environment. I am new to linux. I installed Apache on CentOS 7.0. I modified /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and tried to restart Apache. [root@cbcdev mod_fastcgi-2.4.6]# make top_dir=/usr/lib64/httpd Makefile:12: /usr/lib64/httpd/build/special.mk: No such file or directory make: *** No rule to make target `/usr/lib64/httpd/build/special.mk'. Hello Because I did not send , and then retransmitted. I am using the CentOS5.7. In a state where the link down, I did a ping to the IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4 succeeds in ping. but, IPv6 is ping fails. Once confirmed by ifconfig, it did not have a Link-Local Address. At link down, Is the Link-Local Address not set? Rsync and differential Backups

Hi list, how to perform a differential backup using rsync? On web there is a great confusion about diff backup concept when searched with rsync. Users says diff because it copy only differences. For me differential is backup from last full backup. Other users says that to perform a differential backup I must include in rsync command: --backup --backup-dir=/some/path but from manual page of rsync: ############# --backup-dir=DIR In combination with the --backup option, this tells rsync to store all backups in the specified directory on the receiving side. This can be used for incremental backups. You can additionally specify a backup suffix using the --suffix option (otherwise the files backed up in the specified directory will keep their original filenames). .... ################### Then at this point, I can perform a full backup copying base dir after last incremental. I can performa an incremental backup saving change on a specified destdir (using --backup-dir). How I can perform a diff backup? I know that rsync check differences using "the base dir". This dir have "the same content" of backupped source. To make incremental, this base is used. Supposing that I've 500 GB data on source. Make/sync the base-dir of 500GB. Running a full backup (the result file must be a fullbackup.tar.gz), at the end of the process I get a base-dir of 500GB and a .tar.gz of +/- 500GB compressed. Is correct make full backup, performing first an incremental backup on the base-dir and then compress it on a .tar.gz? Or is better resync all source in alternative destdir? In this example I've spent the double space for a full and a base-dir. 500GB Source vs 1TB for base-dir and a full.tar.gz. There is a way to performs other operation (incr and diff) without using the base and save disk space? Thanks in advance.

Differences from upstream RHEL

At work, we use some commercial software, that names RHEL6 as a supported OS, but not Centos6. I would like to know the difference between Centos and RHEL, in order to claim (or not) that we can support our users on Centos instead of RHEL. I see the release notes, that say "Packages modified by CentOS," but it's not clear what the modifications are. I have been browsing around for these details, and have not yet found specifics of *what* was modified in those packages. Can anyone please direct me toward details of what's modified in the packages that centos modifies?
