CentOS 7.2 - no GUI login after upgrade

After installing and enabling the centos-release-cr repo on my CentOS 7.1 laptop; I ran yum clean all and yum update. Yum complained about gstreamer1 dependencies that is caused by epel repo; therefore, I excluded it from the epel repo and run yum update one more time and it went through. After the update was completed I rebooted the laptop and I will just get the splash screen but will never get to the actual login screen; I have experienced this in the past from CentOS 7.0 to 7.1 upgrade and at that time it was caused by SELinux relabeling some of the configuration files; e.g. /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow. This was discovered after I went into single user mode and checked the journal. I booted in the previous successful kernel that loaded and I experienced the same behavior; therefore I went into single user mode from the latest kernel that came with CentOS 7.2 and the previous kernel, checked the journal and there were no errors that give me a hint of what is going wrong. There are no SELinux relabeling but I left the laptop on for a few hours because I was modifying a few directories to accommodate docker and KVM storage from the default setup. diagnosing noise

Though quiet at the moment, my desktop sometimes sometimes makes a noise that I attribute to either a disk or a fan on its last legs. I'm looking for suggestions for distinguishing. For the disk, I expect I should use either hdparm of fsck. Even after reading the man page, I'm not sure how I would use hdparm. If I use fsck, what should I take as evidence of a bad drive? A good drive? Is there a way to tell whether the OS thinks a fan is on? Is there a way to turn a fan on or off manually? CR getting 7.2 packages......

Heads-up to everyone: CR is getting CentOS 7.1511 (aka '7.2') packages..... just updated using CR, and, yeah, GNOME 3.14 is a bit different from 3.8...... several things are in different places on the screen. I did have to re-setup my triple monitor settings to have the laptop's display in the center and the two other displays as one on the left and one on the right. The good side is that nothing major seems to have broken. Update for me was 1,260+ packages totaling about 1.3GB and taking a grand total of about 25 minutes, start to finish (prior to the reboot). Hardware is a Dell Precision M6500 Core i7 740QM with 20GB of RAM, all but /home on a 256GB SSD with /home on an HGST 1TB HDD. Kudos to the build team for the quick turnaround, and for the CR repo.

lvm snapshot

Hello after a lvm snapshot creation and a reboot are all logical volumes are missing, only swap is present. lvcreate -L 5000M -s -n centos_h1-root_snap /dev/mapper/centos_h1-root lvs LV VG Attr LSize Pool Origin Data% Meta% Move Log Cpy%Sync Convert centos_h1-root_snap centos_h1 swi-a-s--- 4,88g root 0,00 home centos_h1 -wi-ao---- 15,00g root centos_h1 owi-aos--- 20,00g swap centos_h1 -wi-ao---- 7,62g var centos_h1 -wi-ao---- 1000,00g after reboot no complete start, dracut console is running: dracut:# ls /dev/centos_h1/ swap dmsetup info shows swap only, too I can reproduce this on 2 different Servers and a Virtual Machine have same behavior. CentOS and bacula

Hi list, I've a bacula system based on disk volume that I need to refresh (new install). There is a way to mantain the "current status" (volumes, catalog and other if needed) when migrating the system to a new installation? Thanks in advance

getting X started...

I've got a new VM installed for me by a sysadmin who apparently did a minmal install. As a result I've installed a bunch of things to try to get X going, including yum groupinstall "development and creative workstation", "Desktop platform" "mate desktop" but so far I've not found the incantation to get it to start up X at boot time. As far as I can tell, it doesn't even try. Once I log in, startx works fine. New monitor weirdnesses (CentOS 5.11)

I just got a new monitor for my desktop system (the old one died after *many* years of service). The new monitor is a high res 16:9 monitor, but the VESA video driver insists on using 1024x768 (which was the resolution of the *old* monitor). It does seem to detect higher, 16:9 resolutions but it is not using them. I *think* I need to set some low-level video mode thing, but it has been a long time since I have had to do that that I have totally forgotten how to do it. Following this are a pile of blocks starting with 'Mode: ...' or '*Mode: ...'. I think these are the modes the driver is reading from some 'magic' place and maybe the stared ones are 'matches' to the DCC mode lines. I think what I need to do is update this 'magic' place with a low-level program (probably eventually run in /etc/rc.local or someplace like that) that will add in a 'Mode' -- I did this *years* ago with little machines with Intel video chips and 16:9 monitors. But I am totally blanking on the command to use. I find using a 4:3 video mode on a 16:9 monitor somewhat unusable. I running CentOS 5.11 w/Xen. The video chipset is a NVIDIA Corporation C77 [GeForce 8200] (rev a2).
