LDAP create home directories

Hey guys, I've setup an LDAP server on our network. I'm using OpenLDAP. It was really easy to use the authconfig-tui to generate the nsswitch.conf and ldap.conf files that would allow user authentication. But when users would log in, the system wasn't creating the home directories. I found one command that would correct that: authconfig --enablemkhomedir --update After that logging in with an LDAP user to that machine would create the home directories. But that only worked on the first machine. Running the command on other machines would have no effect. Which is odd. You would think it would be consistent. Even after copying over the entire contents of /etc/pam.d from the working machine to the non-working machine and making sure that the non-working machine had the same /etc/nsswitch.conf /etc/openldap/ldap.conf as the one that worked. It still doesn't create the home directories when LDAP users log in. The non-working machine also has the required librariy file: -rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 11176 Aug 18 10:56 /usr/lib64/security/pam_mkhomedir.so So how can I fix this? playing DVDs on C7

Hi all! I'm trying to finish setting up my newly upgraded C7 system. It's on the same hardware I ran C6 on for several years. on C6 I had no trouble playing DVDs (after installing tons of packages and libdvdcss). Well, on C7, I've got totem (videos) and all its plugins I can find via yum, VLC (from nux) all the gstreamer and gstreamer1 packages I can find, everything with "dvd" in its name, including libdvdcss from nux. vlc will kinda play movies, i.e., moving garbage appears on the screen, sometimes it'll resemble something from the movie, but most of the time not so much. I can't figure out what's missing here. Totem played a movie for me this afternoon, flawlessly, but now I can't get it to do anything. sometimes it starts up as a plain gray box with no borders, no controls, no nothing, and has to be killed. sometimes it draws the player controls but never starts playing. I've got two DVD drives, one of them replaces a broken one, but the other one has been there for 2-3 years. I've been googling for hours, but haven't turned up anything that I haven't already tried. Serial Communication

Many years ago, we began scrapping the RTOS approach for some of our timing-critical applications. Our first applications were based on Solaris real-time extensions and served well us well for many years. Then came the era of shaky support for Intel Solaris and we moved many applications to Linux. There appeared to be no actual need for special real-time features with a good Linux distribution kernel and a GHz processors. One of our most productive applications involves special test equipment computers that drive high speed serial ports. The original development of these systems had the "added benefit" of helping us to learn udev rules. The serial communication is very flexible and most of it is script driven. A current need to update computing platforms is driving script review. There appears to be a bit of variety in outputs to the serial drivers. The echo of a string with redirection to the serial driver, cat of a file with redirection to the serial driver and dd of=/dev/.... are methods used at various places in the scripts. It is not at all clear what drove the choice of the output method at various points in the application. In addition, changing the method of output has not succeeded in breaking most of the applications. Is there some fundamental difference between these methods of output to the driver that might trip us up as we simplify the scripts and port to new computer platforms? CentOS 7.2 - Fast TSC calibration failed.

Dear All, I have downloaded CentOS 7.2.1511 DVD and tried to install it on a new laptop that comes with an Intel i7 6th generation processor and don't matter which option I use (install, test media or troubleshooting); I get the following error: [ 0.000000] tsc: Fast TSC calibration failed [ 0.321345] pnp 00:0d: can't evaluate _CRS: 1 At this time I am not able to use any keys on the keyboard; therefore, the only option I have is to power the laptop off. The laptop specifications are as follow: Processor : Intel Core i7-6700HQ 2.6GHz (Turbo up to 3.5GHz) Skylake RAM : 32 GB DDR4-SDRAM Graphics Coprocessor : NVIDIA GTX960M 2GB GDDR5 Chipset Brand : Intel I waited for CentOS 7.2 because I saw that upstream had [0] "the 'intel_idle' and 'pstate' driver updated to support 6th Generation Intel Core processor". Shall I file a bug for this or will I need to create a ISO with an customised kernel or use one of ElRepo's 'lt' or 'ml' kernels which will include support for the new hardware. CentOS 7 installer bug?

The other admin I work with seems to have found a bug in the installer. The setup is: two internal SSD drives. Once the GUI gets to "select drive to install on", he goes to <ctl><alt><f2>, creates a RAID 1, and partitions it, regular MBR (they're small). 1G for /boot as the first partition, 2G for swap as the second partition, and the rest for / as partition 3. fdisk shows the partition types correctly. Back to the GUI, select the MD drive... and /boot's fine, / looks ok... but the one for swap shows with 0 bytes. Anyone else seen this behavior? mark

google chrome future / centos 7

I'm seeing the following banner when I start up google-chrome 48-beta (48.0.2564.48 beta (64-bit)) on my 7.2 machines: This computer will soon stop receiving Google Chrome updates because this Linux system will no longer be supported. Does this portend a support issue for chrome on centos-7 in a few months when the underlying changes make their way into their -stable (since, as I understand it/as last I remember, in the centos world we don't have benefit of the RH chromium release)?

CentOS-7 Security Updates

Hi all, I'm trying to clarify the security updates policy for older CentOS-7 releases. There is a number of servers I'm supporting that are running CentOS-7 1503. When 1511 was released several days ago I've tried to upgrade several of those, but failed. I've got some strange errors with e1000 virtual NIC being restarted frequently with 'tx unit hang' errors. Anyway, it's not the thing I'd like to discuss here. What I'd like to know is the answer to the question "will there be any security updates for CentOS-7 1503, and how long"? I was searching on a wiki, but couldn't find anything clear enough. What I've found is the phrase in 1511 announcement letter This release supersedes all previously released content for CentOS Linux 7, and therefore we highly encourage all users to upgrade their machines. Information on different upgrade strategies and how to handle stale content is included in the Release Notes. This makes me think that there will be no security updates for 1503 and the only way to get them is to upgrade to 1511, but I'd like to find any proof. Unfortunately, there is nothing about this in Release Notes :( -- Regards, Dmitry Teselkin

The collection ruby193 delivers version 1.9.3 of the Ruby interpreter, bundler and version 3.2 of the Ruby on Rails framework. Some of the most common rubygems are also included in the collections as RPMs, the rest may be installed using bundler or gem tools. Each collection is delivered as a group of RPMs, with the grouping being done using the name of the collection as a prefix of all packages that are part of the software collection.
