Mail Merge data to a pdf file by overlaying the data on the image

Everyone, I am looking for a utility that I can use to do a mail merge of data to a pdf image file. The image file does not have any active fields, but will be just an image file. I would like to overlay names addresses etc. We currently do this with a pcl file by just overlaying the data with pcl print positions. However, in order to get the pcl file from an original pdf file we have to use gimp to convert the pdf to pcl file, and we always lose a little resolution. I was wondering if anyone knows of a utility to perform this function without first converting the image to a pcl file. Thanks, -- Greg Ennis

heavy IO load when working with sparse files (centos 6.4)

Dear List, We have noticed a variety of reproducible conditions working with sparse files on multiple servers under load with CentOS 6.4. The short story is that processes that read / write sparse files with large "holes" can generate an IO storm. Oddly, this only happens with holes and not with the sections of the files that contain data. We have seen extremely high IO load for example copying a 40 or 80gb sparse file that only has a few gigs of data in it. Attempts to lower the io priority and cpu priority of these processes do not make any measurable difference. (ionice, nice) This has been observed with processes such as: cp rsync sha1sum The server does have to be under some load to reproduce the necessary conditions. The cases we have seen involve servers running 10-30 guests under kvm. Load is in acceptable norms when the processes are run, such as load avg 5-15 on a 24 core (12 core with HT enabled) server. We also verify before starting such a process that the spindle with the file we're working on is not being unduly hammered by another process. These servers have one hardware raid controller each (Dell H700 controller with write cache enabled) and multiple raid arrays (separate sets of physical spindles). Interestingly, the IO storm is not limited to the array / spindles where the sparse file resides but affects all IO on that server. We have looked extensively and not found any account of a similar issue. We have seen this on configurations that are 'plain vanilla' enough to think that this is not something specific to our environment. Wondering if anyone else has seen this and if any suggestions on gathering more data / troubleshooting. We wonder if we've found either a raid controller driver issue, an OS issue or some other such thing. What seems to point in this direction is that even with ionice -c3 which should prevent the process from using IO unless the storage is idle, an io storm which appears to saturate the entire raid bus on a given server can occur. Centos 6.4 on Xserve, IPMI error

I'm trying to install Centos 6.4 64 bit on this Xserve: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/xserve/specs/xserve-intel-xeon-2.8-ei… I got a bootloader from: http://blog.christophersmart.com/2009/07/23/linux-on-an-apple-xserve-efi-on… as none of the official Centos releases (full, minimal, network 64 bit) boot on this machine. They all crash when loading the bootx64.conf. I have built a USB stick with a working bootx64.efi, grub.cfg, together with an initrd and a vmlinuz from the isolinux folder. I'm tasked with reconstructing the CentOS version of the GlibC library for testing with gethostbyname(). My mission is to show that we are not affected by the latest exploit for the product we are shipping targeted for RHEL and CentOS. To do so, I want to equip gethostbyname() with additional code. My objective is to rebuild from source the EXACT version of GlibC for CentOS 6.6. disk space trouble on ec2 instance

Hey all, Ok, so I've been having some trouble for a while with an EC2 instance running CentOS 5.11 with a disk volume reporting 100% usage. Root is on an EBS volume. So I've tried the whole 'du -sk | sort -nr | head -10' routine all around this volume getting rid of files. At first I was getting rid of about 50MB of files. Yet the volume remains at 100% capacity. Thinking that maybe the OS was just not letting go of the inodes for the files on the disk, I attempted rebooting the instance. After logging in again I did a df -h / on the root volume. And look! Still at 100% capcity used. Grrr.... Ok so I then did a du -h on the /var/www directory, which was mounted on the root volume. And saw that it was gobbling up 190MB of disk space. So then I reasoned that I could create an EBS volume, rsync the data there, blow away the contents of /var/www/* and then mount the EBS volume on the /var/www directory. So I went through that exercise and lo and behold. Still at 100% capacity. Rebooted the instance again. Logged in and.. still at 100% capacity. Here's how the volumes are looking now. [root@ops:~] #df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 9.9G 9.3G 49M 100% / none 312M 0 312M 0% /dev/shm /dev/sdi 148G 116G 25G 83% /backup/tapes /dev/sdh 9.9G 385M 9.0G 5% /backup/tapes/bacula-restores /dev/sdf 9.9G 2.1G 7.4G 22% /var/lib/mysql fuse 256T 0 256T 0% /backup/mysql fuse 256T 0 256T 0% /backup/svn /dev/sdg 197G 377M 187G 1% /var/www There are some really important functions I need this volume to perform that it simply can't because the root volume is at 100% capacity. Like the fact that neither mysql nor my backup program - bacula will even think of starting up and functioning! I'm at a loss to explain how I can delete 190MB worth of data, reboot the instance and still be at 100% usage. I'm at my wits end over this. Looking for a life-save LVM Guru

Dear All, I am in desperate need for LVM data rescue for my server. I have an VG call vg_hosting consisting of 4 PVs each contained in a separate hard drive (/dev/sda1, /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdc1, and /dev/sdd1). And this LV: lv_home was created to use all the space of the 4 PVs. Right now, the third hard drive is damaged; and therefore the third PV (/dev/sdc1) cannot be accessed anymore. I would like to recover whatever left in the other 3 PVs (/dev/sda1, /dev/sdb1, and /dev/sdd1). I have tried with the following: 1. Removing the broken PV: # vgreduce --force vg_hosting /dev/sdc1 Physical volume "/dev/sdc1" still in use # pvmove /dev/sdc1 No extents available for allocation 2. Replacing the broken PV: I was able to create a new PV and restore the VG Config/meta data: # pvcreate --restorefile ... --uuid ... /dev/sdc1 # vgcfgrestore --file ... vg_hosting However, vgchange would give this error: # vgchange -a y device-mapper: resume ioctl on failed: Invalid argument Unable to resume vg_hosting-lv_home (253:4) 0 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg_hosting" now active Could someone help me please??? scp -rp behavior

Hey all, I'm trying to copy configuration files from my old CentOS 6.6 32 bit machine to my new CentOS 6.6 64 bit machine. On my 32 bit machine: [mlapier@mushroom ~]$ ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:19:DB:E5:4E:9F inet addr:192.168.15.105 When I issue this command on my new 64 bit machine, 192.168.15.101: scp -pr mlapier(a)192.168.15.105: /home/mlapier/.thunderbird /home/mlapier/.thunderbird It copies all directories and files in 192.168.15.105: /home/mlapier/ to 192.168.15.101: /home/mlapier. I don't want all that, I just want the .thunderbird folder and all it's contents. The user and group account numbers match on the two machines for this user so that's not the issue. When I RTFM this is what I thought it said to do. Hi Folks, I'd like to install cyrus-imapd 2.4 in CentOS6. Found rpm cyrus 2.4 for CentOS6 on rpmseek. cyrus-imapd-2.4.17-30.1.x86_64.rpm But there are conflicts with postfix 2.6.6. Can I ignore this conflicts or is there a suitable version of ppstfix available? Thx Timothy

Odd nfs mount problem

I'm exporting a directory, firewall's open on both machines (one CentOS 6.6, the other RHEL 6.6), it automounts on the exporting machine, but the other server, not so much. ls /mountpoint/directory eventually times out (directory being the NFS mount). mount -t nfs server:/location/being/exported /mnt works... but an immediate ls /mnt gives me stale file handle. The twist on this: the directory being exported is on an xfs filesystem... one that's 33TB (it's an external RAID 6 appliance). Any ideas? mark

OT: AF 4k sector drives with 512 emulation

Still have good quality older sata hardware raid cards that require 512 bytes/sector. As far as I know HD manufacturers are not making native 512 bytes/sector drives any more. Some have better 512e emulation than others. Looking for some advice on which to avoid and which are recommended. Thanks. PS this is for a CentOS6 server.

yum causing RPC timed out?

I just installed centos 7, yum is acting strange, experiencing RPC time-outs. Sometimes when I disable the additional repos (epel and rpmforge) it seems to make things act normal. But not this time (see below). Could I have some misconfiguration? Network glitch? What hypotheses should I be considering? Package group "X Window System" has disappeared

Hi, Until last week, I could install a CentOS 7 based desktop using the following approach: 1. Install minimal system. 2. yum groupinstall "X Window System" 3. yum install gdm gnome-classic-session gnome-terminal liberation-fonts 4. Install applications as needed. This morning, the package group "X Window System" seems to have disappeared. This is embarrassing. What happened? Hi all :-) This is my first post: I'm coming from debian/bsd world. A question about repositories: minimal installation (version 7) provides: CentOS-Base.repo CentOS-CR.repo CentOS-Debuginfo.repo CentOS-fasttrack.repo CentOS-Sources.repo CentOS-Vault.repo I known there are others repositories as: RPMForge, EPEL, REMI, ATrpms, Webtatic (and maybe also others) so, what kind of these repositories are? Does they repositories substitute packages from main? Or only adding new packages? thanks for advices and help! Pol

C7, igb and DCB support for pause frame ?

Hi there, I’m working on deploying our new cluster. Masters have 5×1gbps (i210 and i350, thus using igb.ko), configured with mtu 9000, 802.3ad. Works fine *but* I can’t get DCB working (pause frame, aka flow control, which is supported by and enabled on our switches). [root@master2 ~]# dcbtool gc eno1 dcb Command: Get Config Feature: DCB State Port: eno1 Status: Device not capable (I get the same with ELRepo 5.2.15 kmod). Intel datasheet says flow control is available. Can’t find much about it on the web or in kernel git repo. Could someone give me a hand ? Regards, Laurent.

I just tested and confirmed it. Some other notes: with the "mlapier(a)192.168.15.105" you'll, by default, be "in" the home directory of mlapier on the remote machine. So you don't need the "...:/home/mlapier/" pathing. Also, if you are in your (mlapier) home directory on the new machine when you are doing this you again won't need the pathing. So, I think you should be able to do just: scp -pr mlapier@192.168.15.105:.thunderbird . or at most: scp -pr mlapier@192.168.15.105:.thunderbird /home/mlapier/. If, per chance, you wanted to change the directory name on the transfer you'd need to specify it, rather than just the ".", otherwise the "." will simply put directory on the target machine with the same name as the original. - Richard
