New desktop oriented Linux distribution based on CentOS 6

Hi, for those interested we are working on a CentOS 6 based Linux distribution for Bulgarian users called StotinkaOS. Te project ships with own repository containing many useful desktop and system applications also other third-party software repositories enabled by default, including RPMFusion and Fedora's EPEL repository. Centos 6.5 install, missing libraries: where did I go wrong?

Hello everyone, I had a CentOS 6.5 CD for a clean install, and I did a desktop install. Then I did a yum update to bring it up to 6.7. So far, so good. I run a bunch of scientific programs that use C++ compilers and libraries. But, the programs were failing becaause in /usr/lib, the libraries simply weren't there. The directory was fairly sparsely populated with about 10 directories of libraries for specific programs. But otherwise, things that are in /usr/lib on a Centos 5 server, such as: libkate.so.1.2.1 libkdb5.a libkdb5.so libkdb5.so.4 are indeed there. These are just 4 library examples. I assume I did something wrong in the installation to keep the lib*.so.* files from installing into /usr/lib. What do I need to do next time to keep that from happening? Anyone have any ideas? Hello Everyone, I am a newbie. When I try to install GRUB2 on centos 5.2 system, I get following error. centos5: grub-install /dev/sda //sbin/grub-setup: warn: This GPT partition label has no BIOS Boot Partition; embedding won't be possible!. //sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged.. //sbin/grub-setup: error: will not proceed with blocklists. Can you please help me figure out the problem ? Thanks Sachin

Odd problem with updates to the recent CR

We started updating via CR over a week ago, before 6.7 was official, and just today identified an issue.... For (alleged) security, the agency I work as a contractor for runs SiteMinder, from CA. #insert rant_against_CA.h Anyway, starting late last week, we found issues - as in, its process, which runs under, and is started by, apache, was suddenly pegging a CPU or so. Trying to stop httpd, that worked... but this idiot process never did (and it's ugly to clean up after). What we just this morning found out to be the problem is that some package seems to change the permissions on /var/log/httpd to 700 from 770. The result was that this ...thing... couldn't write to its own logs, running as apache:root, while /var/log/httpd was root:root. I just did rpm -q httpd --scripts, and that doesn't show anything, so as I don't know what package did it.... If anyone knows, I'd like to know. mark

dd iso to flash drive

I’ve been trying to get the dd of an iso to a usb flash drive to work for CentOS 6.7. It is working with the CentOS 7 DVD1 iso (x64), but if I use the same process with 6.7 bin dvd1 iso or the 6.7 live dvd, the flash drive will not boot. I thought 6.x and forward could be done like this. -wes

Hey Y'all, Seems my Skype installation has stopped working. I have skype-4.3.0.37-2.el6.i686.rpm from the Nux repo. [mlapier@peach ~]$ skype %U (<unknown>:27070): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "clearlooks", Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module" Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "pk-gtk-module" I checked the yum log. Other than the 6.7 upgrade these are all the transactions I see. CentOS-6, SELInux, Ruby-on-Rails, Passenger and Kernel-2.6.32

We run a project administration system web application call 'Redmine'. I have been trying for ages, without success, to get SELinux and Passenger -- essentially a fast-cgi replacement Apache module built specifically for Rails -- to run together. I have found that the latest versions of the Passenger Apache module are supposed to work on CentOS-6, but not with the stock kernel. See: https://www.phusionpassenger.com/library/walkthroughs/deploy/ruby/ownserver… My questions are: Are there really really grave implications of using the kernel-ml form epel repo to get a sufficiently modern kernel to finally get Passenger and SELinux to work together? And are those implications more grave than simply disabling SELinux on that server entirely, which is the only other choice.
