Centos 7, systemd, and nvidia drivers

Or, another rant against systemd. Moderators, put up with it - this is an issue. I tried systemctl start multi-user.target. I tried systemctl stop graphical.target. I finally had to set the multi-user.target as the default, and reboot, to get rid of the nouveau drivers. Note that I tried to modprobe -r, and rmmod with all the modules using nouveau, and couldn't - I kept getting "in use" - it seemed like a circular reference. As I said, I rebooted. Then I ran the proprietary build, ran fine. I try starting the graphical target, no joy. I changed the default target back to graphical, and rebooted. Still no xorg. Googling (yahooing?), I added rdblacklist=nouveau in grub.conf, *then* had to rebuild the grub2 (grub2 must *die*). Still wouldn't see the nvidia drivers on reboot. Finally, I rebuild the initramfs, which got the now-built and installed nvidia drivers (and I'd yum uninstalled nouveau), and finally, it came up. Oh, and for some reason, without the reboot, the Xorg.0.log wasn't renewed, as though it hadn't actually restarted X. Plus, it appears that <ctrl-alt-bkspc> is disabled.... Then all I had to do was fight and hand-edit the xorg.conf, which *MUST* be in /etc/X11/sorg.conf.d to be even seen.... But what I had to do is beyond this - my user's got three monitors, on two cards, and two are for 3D, and so nothing to do with my issues with trying to get systemd to load and xorg to use the nvidia drivers. mark, incredibly frustrated

(?) Mailman VERY slow with IPv6 (with work-around)

I recently stood up an EL7 box with Mailman for a few lists I run for some friends. My old install, on an EL6 system, ran with no issues for several years but I was induced to upgrade by a "hardware casualty" on the old system. I was going to have to rebuild anyway, so why not take it as an opportunity to try EL7? The build went fine and I was able to migrate the lists over with no issues, but once I got there just about everything to do with Mailman operations were painfully slow. For example, "list_lists" took 5 seconds of "real" time. I was used to it taking _much_ less as I only have about 6 lists. This affected both the command-line Mailman tools and the web interface. My first inclination was to blame Python, but other code executed just fine with it. While testing I tried an strace of list_lists and found that it was timing out on a read operation to a socket to the Avahi daemon (/var/run/avahi-daemon/socket) while trying to resolve the link-local IPv6 address. Having flashbacks to Sendmail stalling on DNS issues I decided to try fixing resolution first. As a test I put the link-local address into my /etc/hosts file with a localized name. Running list_lists then took about 0.19 seconds "real" time! The web interface also changed from painfully slow to it's previous behaviour on EL6. I imagine just turning off IPv6 would work as well, but I have an actual use case that is a lot easier with it turned on. Periodic speed test

I run the speedtest from <https://pypi.python.org/pypi/speedtest-cli/> quite often, and find it very reliable. I'm wondering if anyone has developed a version to run the speed test at regular intervals, say every 6 hours, and record the results in a simple database or just a file? OOM and Swappiness

Hi All, I have a server that has its swappiness set to 0. It is running a little tight on memory and so there have been a couple of events where the OOM_killer has been invoked and killed off MySQL, which you would expect. Now if you have your swappiness at 0 then "A value of 0 instructs the kernel not to initiate swap until the amount of free and file-backed pages is less than the high water mark in a zone."[1] So even in this event should I expect to start swapping instead of invoking the oom_killer? Is the logic Memory request -> OOM - > Can I swap? Y-> swap N-> OOM-Killer Or as the OOM-Killer there to prevent an OOM Condition, that as the OOM Condition is prevented by killing mysql and therefore we will never swap? Restoring Windows to Minimzed State after Sleeping

When I resume working on my computer running Centos 6.7 after sleeping, terminal windows, file directories and the applications are restored. However, terminal windows and file directories that were minimized before going to sleep are opened to the size and location they had before being minimized. I'd like for all windows that were minimized to be restored to this very state - is this possible? Thank you.

I agree, I don't see it there for C6, even in their -testing. Looking at rpmfind it appears to be available from RpmFusion back to fedora-18. That may not be old enough (forget what the fc "base" is for C6), but you may be able to find older fc versions with a little looking.

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all, I created a LUKS encrypted partition via a udev-triggered script on 6.6 using --key-file /tmp/foo. This worked fine, and I can decrypt the LUKS partition via script and manually using --key-file with luksOpen. The odd problem is that I can't decrypt the partition using the prompt. If I manually create a file with the passphrase in it and then point to it with --key-file, it decrypts fine. I used 'cat -A /tmp/foo' to verify that there was no '\n' at the end of the phrase. CentOS-6 - LogWatch

The Logwatch imapd service script distributed with CentOS-6 does not generate anything when I run logwatch --service all on a cyrus-imapd host. Is this expected behaviour? Is there a separate script for cyrus-imapd or are their configuration options required to get the existing script to work. I have found an ancient (2004) logwatch service script for cyrus-imapd but I was sort of hoping that there was a more up-to-date and officially supported version available somewhere. centos 7 on older macbook pro

Hi all, I recently got a brand new MacBook Pro, replacing one that is over 5.5 years old. I'm trying to think of something to do with the old laptop, and one idea I had was to put CentOS on it. After some initial struggles, I finally found this page, which tells how to tell the installer to find hfsplus-utils: https://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=7327 Then I got to the point of configuring wifi, and of course being a MBP, it has a proprietary Broadcom interface. I followed the instructions on the wiki (https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/Wireless/Broadcom), but had some trouble with it coming back up after a sleep. That plus some other issues (it ran hot just running a browser, for example) are making me question whether this is a good idea. Does anyone else run a CentOS (not necessarily 7) on Apple hardware, particularly laptops (and not in a VM)? If so, any pointers on making life easier? Centos main list, I am working on a Centos 7 system and trying to do the following. yum search cups-lpd I am getting the following -------------------------------------------------------------------- Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=7&arch=x86_64&repo=os&infra=stock error was 12: Timeout on http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=7&arch=x86_64&repo=os&infra=stock: (28, 'Resolving timed out after 30382 milliseconds') One of the configured repositories failed (Unknown), and yum doesn't have enough cached data to continue. At this point the only safe thing yum can do is fail. There are a few ways to work "fix" this: 1. Contact the upstream for the repository and get them to fix the problem. 2. Reconfigure the baseurl/etc. for the repository, to point to a working upstream. This is most often useful if you are using a newer distribution release than is supported by the repository (and the packages for the previous distribution release still work). 3. Disable the repository, so yum won't use it by default. Yum will then just ignore the repository until you permanently enable it again or use --enablerepo for temporary usage: yum-config-manager --disable <repoid> 4. Configure the failing repository to be skipped, if it is unavailable. Note that yum will try to contact the repo. when it runs most commands, so will have to try and fail each time (and thus. yum will be be much slower). If it is a very temporary problem though, this is often a nice compromise: yum-config-manager --save --setopt=<repoid>.skip_if_unavailable=true Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base/7/x86_64 -------------------------------------------------------------------- I am using cups on this Centos 7 machine. Which prints fine from the Centos to my print queue's However I have an Sco Unix system using lpd printing that I am trying to send print jobs to the Centos 7 system and those are not even getting to the system. I get message: waiting on queue to be enabled QUESTION FOR main list: Is the Centos 7 "yum" commands being worked on? When might this be fixed? Dear all, I had installed Centos 5.9 in my x86_64 system and I installed update yesterday. Just now after I initiated the system, I found it has been upgraded to centos 5.11. But the bad thing is now I cannot open a terminal. When I try to open a terminal, it just gives out a bug buddy window : "The information about the crash has been successfully collected. Please provide some background about what you were doing when the application crashed..." Could anyone help me about this? Thanks in advance. Yeping Sun

flac/sox/etc with mp3 support?

I need to convert a bunch of .flac files to .mp3 files, but the sox and flac command tools thats in the base repo won't do that. EPEL doesn't seem to have much either. I went looking at ATRPMS but am getting database errors from their home page :( I know rpmforge used to have this stuff, but its virtually unmaintained today so I've written it off. any suggestions?
