No GUI with CentOS-7.2

When I re-booted my HP MicroServer into CentOS-7.2 I was given a text console. Extending a CentOS disk without reboot

Hello, Today a virtual server under my administration ran out of disk space, so I had to get extra space to it.. while it was running, because it's an important web server without any kind of HA/Load Balancing (don't do that, kids). So what happened, is that after another administrator had extended the disk from VMWare, I tried to extend it from the OS side. Everything went well, listing my steps here: * echo 1 > /sys/class/scsi_device/2\:0\:0\:0/device/rescan * fdisk /dev/sdb (the usual, delete partition and make a new, bigger one) Now's when the problems happened. After writing the partition table I got the usual "Busy" error. But I needed to do this without downtime. So, what did I try to get the kernel acknowledge the partition size change: * hdparm -z /dev/sdb * partx -a -v /dev/sdb * partprobe -s * echo "1" > /sys/block/sdb/device/rescan And while dmesg reported that it recognized the partition change, LVM did still not see it. So eventually, I was still forced to reboot, after which everything (pvresize, lvresize, resize2fs) worked fine. Environment: * A VMWare virtual machine * CentOS 6.7 (Final) Is there any other way I'm missing? Is this caused by the fact that I was trying to resize a partition that is under the root file system? systemd-sysctl not running on boot

Hey all, After upgrading to CentOS 7.2, non of my servers run systemd-sysctl on boot. So far, I tried running manually /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-sysctl, it runs smoothly and updates all the parameters. I also ran sysctl --system, which also executes successfully. I checked within systemd, and systemd-sysctl is wanted by the sysinit.target which is wanted by the multi-user.target - the one I boot into. I can't find anything by doing journalctl | grep sysctl Or by looking through /var/log/messages (I run rsyslog as well). Any idea's ? Thanks

Bind fails to start after update from 7.1 to 7.2

I am seeing these lines for each domain in the systemd journal: zone relationship123.com/IN: loading from master file relationship123.com.db failed: file not found zone relationship123.com/IN: not loaded due to errors. _default/relationship123.com./IN: file not found If I change the zone defs to include the full path: >From zone "relationships123.com." IN { type master; file "relationships123.com.db"; }; To zone "relationships123.com." IN { type master; file "/var/named/chroot/var/named/relationships123.com.db"; }; in the config file, named starts, but then fails to provide DNS replies with the following error for each request: general: error: zone relationships123.com/IN: loading from master file /var/named/chroot/var/named/relationships123.com.db failed: file not found general: error: zone relationships123.com/IN: not loaded due to errors. Nothing was changed in the named configuration prior to updating to 7.2 As usual I am using systemctl start named-chroot to start the server. Any ideas? Emmett

The problem with Firefox appears to be that the apple site is sending the wrong coding for FF so requiring embedded quicktime, rather than using FF's HTML5. Follow caspy7's github link for further discussion and help on the user-agent resolution. Switching my FF user-agent to claim it was my tablet's chrome let these videos play fine. It appears that Apple's view is that page designers shouldn't be coding to require the plugin -- see bottom of: <https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205081> so it's somewhat amusing that their site is doing just that.

Some process is send this huge traffic. Hello, I have an old IBM Netvista. Lately, it would seem to go into sleep mode but I have all that disabled. I would have to power off to wake it up. Now I think its done. I can't even get to the CMOS/BIOS. The power light is on but no beeps or anything spinning up. I have two of these Netvistas and had put on away when I upgraded one of the machines. I pulled the HD from it and installed it in the other. Same thng. I'm fairly certain it was working when I updraded. I've swapped out monitors as well. Power supply or hard drive, any ideas? TIA

packagekit yumBackend question, perhaps

Periodically I find the yumBackend python script of packagekit really slows down my CentOS 7 system. I don't invoke anything myself which starts it and I find nothing in crontab which does either, except perhaps /etc/cron.hourly/0yum-hourly.cron. But I can't be sure that is the culprit. I don't find anything at http://www.freedesktop.org/software/PackageKit which helps me to debug this. Would someone point me in a useful direction so that I can find out what /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/yum/yumBackend.py is doing, why it is doing it, and how it can be controlled? A query on graphic console

I'm only getting a text console with CentOS-7.2 on my (oldish) HP MicroServer. The only explicit error I see in Xorg.0.log is that no driver is found for my Pixart USB optical mouse. My query is: would that be sufficient to prevent a graphic console? Incidentally, I can use X apps, eg xpdf, if I ssh in from my laptop. SSD drives for the OS - 1 or 2?

Preparing to build a small replacement server (initially built in 2005) and normally for the OS I would buy 2x500GB drives and deploy in a RAID 1 configuration. Now we have SSD drives available - does just a single SSD drive offer the same reliability or is there advantage in deploying two in a Raid 1 config? Also, what form factor / interface is best for the SSD OS boot device on a server M/B? Anything I should be looking for? It seems most SSD are in laptop drive size, shape and interface - thus not a good fit into a server motherboard unless I'm missing something. - what devices are you using? Thanks in advance. Rob

CentOS-7.2 kernel panic

My HP MicroServer crashes with a kernel panic when booted into kernel-3.10.0-327.3.1.el7.x86_64, but runs perfectly under kernel-3.10.0-229.20.1.el7.x86_64 . HP OfficeJet Printing

There has been a bit of grumbling recently about HP printer capability in one of our smallest prototyping Labs. We have a single GigE switch connecting a Windows 7 machine and a Dell/CentOS-6 machine. The CentOS machine also has connectivity via another network. Currently, only the Windows 7 machine has been setup for printing on our HP OfficeJet 8615. Our Samba effort on the CentOS system has not been successful so we use Cygwin and ftp to move files to the Windows 7 system for printing. Being able to print directly from the CentOS 6 system would be most convenient. Software supporting the HP OfficeJet Pro 8615 is apparently available as indicated in the links and other information below. We also see that hplip was apparently part of an installation or update performed on the CentOS 6 Dell machine at some point in time. http://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/?source=typ_redirect http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html The current version of the HPLIP solution is: 3.15.11. Centos 7, grub2-mkconfig, unsupported sector

Hi, folks, Well, I get back from vacation, and three CentOS 7 boxes didn't come up this morning (my manager and the other admin did the update & reboot). On these three - but *not* another one or two, and I don't think those others are Dells, they're supermicro's - the 327 kernel fell into the rdosshell, I guess. I finally got one the three up by going back to the 228.14 kernel. Now, after googling and finding the CentOS bugzilla, 0009860, that referenced the upstream bugzilla, I applied the workaround discussed in it, Adding initcall_blacklist=clocksource_done_booting to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub and then grub2-mkconfig -o /etc/grub2.cfg" On one. On the other, that's got a *large* RAID appliance (a JetStor w/ 42 4TB drives...), it seemed to work... then gave me a dozen or so ERROR: unsupported sector size 4096 on /dev/sdd. ERROR: unsupported sector size 4096 on /dev/sde. 0. Did the grub2-mkconfig actually work correctly? 1. Is it safe to ignore the errors and reboot? 2. This seems to be an old bug in os-prober, that was fixed years ago - has it slipped back in? mark

NFS problem after 7.2

I just updated my fileserver to version 7.2 and got some NFS problems after that. In /etc/exports I have the following line /path hostname(ro,insecure) Now that host can no longer mount that share. I get mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting x Also when I do restart of the NFS server I get following in the logs Dec 30 21:59:33 files systemd[1]: Starting NFS server and services...
