Are you debugging the wrong bit? Isn't this X starting correctly, but the xinit desktop environment is likely failing? jh

Run cornjobs only when a user is logged

Hi all, Is it possible to run cronjobs configured by a user to run only when he/she is logged (via GDM/KDM,etc.)? Thanks.

Hello, I have an old IBM Netvista. Lately, it would seem to go into sleep mode but I have all that disabled. I would have to power off to wake it up. Now I think its done. I can't even get to the CMOS/BIOS. The power light is on but no beeps or anything spinning up. I have two of these Netvistas and had put on away when I upgraded one of the machines. I pulled the HD from it and installed it in the other. Same thng. I'm fairly certain it was working when I updraded. I've swapped out monitors as well. Power supply or hard drive, any ideas? TIA

what browser plugin provides Quicktime on 7.2?

Several of the plugins I used on C6 no longer seem to be available, so I can't figure out what to use for Quicktime (apple.com/trailers) Advice appreciated! packagekit yumBackend question, perhaps

Periodically I find the yumBackend python script of packagekit really slows down my CentOS 7 system. I don't invoke anything myself which starts it and I find nothing in crontab which does either, except perhaps /etc/cron.hourly/0yum-hourly.cron. But I can't be sure that is the culprit. I don't find anything at http://www.freedesktop.org/software/PackageKit which helps me to debug this. Would someone point me in a useful direction so that I can find out what /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/yum/yumBackend.py is doing, why it is doing it, and how it can be controlled? A query on graphic console

I'm only getting a text console with CentOS-7.2 on my (oldish) HP MicroServer. The only explicit error I see in Xorg.0.log is that no driver is found for my Pixart USB optical mouse. My query is: would that be sufficient to prevent a graphic console? Incidentally, I can use X apps, eg xpdf, if I ssh in from my laptop. SSD drives for the OS - 1 or 2?

Preparing to build a small replacement server (initially built in 2005) and normally for the OS I would buy 2x500GB drives and deploy in a RAID 1 configuration. Now we have SSD drives available - does just a single SSD drive offer the same reliability or is there advantage in deploying two in a Raid 1 config? Also, what form factor / interface is best for the SSD OS boot device on a server M/B? Anything I should be looking for? It seems most SSD are in laptop drive size, shape and interface - thus not a good fit into a server motherboard unless I'm missing something. - what devices are you using? Thanks in advance. Rob

CentOS-7.2 kernel panic

My HP MicroServer crashes with a kernel panic when booted into kernel-3.10.0-327.3.1.el7.x86_64, but runs perfectly under kernel-3.10.0-229.20.1.el7.x86_64 . HP OfficeJet Printing

There has been a bit of grumbling recently about HP printer capability in one of our smallest prototyping Labs. We have a single GigE switch connecting a Windows 7 machine and a Dell/CentOS-6 machine. The CentOS machine also has connectivity via another network. Currently, only the Windows 7 machine has been setup for printing on our HP OfficeJet 8615. Our Samba effort on the CentOS system has not been successful so we use Cygwin and ftp to move files to the Windows 7 system for printing. Being able to print directly from the CentOS 6 system would be most convenient. Software supporting the HP OfficeJet Pro 8615 is apparently available as indicated in the links and other information below. We also see that hplip was apparently part of an installation or update performed on the CentOS 6 Dell machine at some point in time. http://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/?source=typ_redirect http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html The current version of the HPLIP solution is: 3.15.11. Is there any significant possibility that printer setup or printer use on the CentOS 6 system will negatively impact printing functionality on the Windows 7 machine?
