Centos 7 guest - long delay on mounting /boot with host disk write cache off

Hello, I've noticed a strange delay while booting a CentOS 7 guest on a CentOS 7 host with slow disks (7200RPM) with write cache off. The guest and host are freshly installed Centos 7 (host was fully patched before guest install). Guest is installed on an lvm pool residing on an md raid1 with two SATA 7200 RPM drives with their write caches off. [ 272.003618] SELinux: initialized (dev vda1, type xfs), uses xattr xfs_logprint -t /dev/vda1 says that the device is clean: xfs_logprint: data device: 0xfc01 log device: 0xfc01 daddr: 512032 length: 6824 log tail: 3447 head: 3447 state: <CLEAN> however the full xfs log contains a lot of entries xfs_logprint /dev/vda1 results in ~23000 lines of text. Permanent help is from xfs_repair which zeroes the log - a subsequent mount is fast, and subsequent reboots are fast. [ 411.290031] XFS (vda1): Mounting V4 Filesystem [ 411.456661] XFS (vda1): Ending clean mount [ 411.456676] SELinux: initialized (dev vda1, type xfs), uses xattr During the problematic mounts the host reports a lot of small disk writes with queue depth ~1. Also, when I move the problematic filesystem using dd to an lvm volume, mount -o ro, unmount, make snapshot, mount -o ro again, then the contents of the original volume are the same as the snapshot but the snapshot usage increases from 0 to ~2MB - so something writes to the original volume in a ro mode - possibly a log replay. Is is normal for the xfs mount to replay a log after a clean unmount? nsswitch.conf question

I find the passwd, shadow and group lines in my CentOS 7 /etc/nsswitch.conf file specify "files sss". I'm not familiar with the "sss" source, would someone please give me an idea what that is? Many thanks....Nick

X and NUC5i3ryk on 7.2

I just received my NUC5i3 and tried to get X working using 7.2, it has Intel HD 5500 graphics. Not so much... lspci | grep VGA provides 0:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Broadwell-U Integrated Graphics (rev 09) I download this package xf86-video-intel-1-2.99.917+519+g8229390-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz rebooted and X is running - but not "well". Tried to play a 1080p video and its jerky. Do I not have the correct setup yet? Anyone have the NUC5i3 and have X running correctly? Any thoughts, Thanks so much. jerry

CentOS-6 : DNS resolver for ssh chrooted accounts.

Our firm uses a dedicated virtual host to provide ssh tunnels for remote employee access to various internal services and for http/s access to the outside world. For security reasons I would like to have the remote users forward their dns lookups over the tunnel as well. However, we recently chrooted a number of ssh users and these accounts cannot resolve dns queries passed over the tunnel. I infer from previous experience that the necessary libraries/binaries are not installed in the chroot home. I can install whatever is missing using yum --installroot=[path/to/chroot/home] but what I cannot determine is exactly what package(s) is/are required. Learned something today

Did you know you can use systemd to turn on tmpfs for /tmp ??? I had no clue that was possible, always did it through fstab - but systemctl is-enabled tmp.mount That will tell you if systemd has configured /tmp to mount as tmpfs (default in CentOS 7 is no) systemctl enable tmp.mount That, as you can probably guess, tells systemd to mount /tmp as tmpfs next time the system boots. -=- Just thought I would pass it along in case others may benefit. For me, I only need /tmp as tmpfs on my Bitcoin box - and then only when generating private keys for cold storage, SSDs are often not very good at securely deleting files. So I use tmpfs for /tmp and generate the private keys for cold storage to a file in /tmp and then print it from there (for storage in safe deposit box) - so that the private keys can't be recovered from the SSD. Yes, booting off a CD to generate and then print works too, but that's bothersome. Anyway just in case anyone else needs /tmp as tmpfs for anything, thought I'd pass the tip along.

Centos 3.8 Server Questions, SeaMonkey Mozilla and Java

In order to run a certain software package that runs as a java applet I had to install Centos 3.8 on a 32-bit server. After installation I upgraded the installation using yum after repointing the configuration file to vault.centos.org. This worked fine, however, I still have to resolve two problems: - I'd would like to make the EPEL repository available but have not been able to find if old EPEL software packages are stored somewhere else for non-supported versions of CentOS? - I am trying to get Java 1.4.1 running in SeaMonkey Mozilla 5.0, the latest version I have been able to find for Centos 3.8, but have not had success to date. My current understanding is that I need to create a symbolic link to a Java .so file in the Mozilla plugin directory but must be doing something wrong since I cannot get Java to show up as a plugin using about:plugins in SeaMonkey Mozilla. Is anyone able to offer suggestions? Thank you. H

How to correct LiveKDE stick?

CentOS-7-x86_64-LiveKDE-1511.iso crashes on my AMD/ATI Radeon machine. I installed CentOS-7.2 by first installing CentOS-7-x86_64-LiveKDE-1503.iso, then appending GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="initcall_blacklist=clocksource_done_booting" to /etc/default/grub and running update-grub. My question is: would there be any way, short of re-compiling the ISO, of altering the grub.cfg seen when booting from a USB stick? -- Timothy Murphy gayleard /at/ eircom.net School of Mathematics, Trinity College, Dublin

MATE question

I know I should go to EPEL with this, but thought to ask here in case anyone else uses Mate and may know more about it than I do. I had installed the MATE 1.12 packages from epel testing a few days ago, but since that did not include some of the devel packages, I just removed it and reinstalled all the MATE 1.10 packages from epel-7. they all installed fine, but now my desktop has a background, and top and bottom panels and nothing else. right-click on the desktop produces no context menu.
