External monitor support changes.

I've been working on this issue for quite a while. Back in January of 2015 I posted about how well external monitors worked with the out-of-the-box CentOS 7 ATI radeon drivers and my Dell M6500 with an ATI FirePro M7820. At the time the support was seamless and 'Just Worked' without any issue. A few months later, some update came down the pipe and this broke completely, with the same projector that had been working fine for a while. It just simply quit working. The docked double monitors still worked fine, and it wasn't a critical issue for me, so I kept trying it occasionally to see if it would start working again, but it never did. So last week I upgraded laptops to a Dell Precision M6700 with an nVidia card, upon which I immediately installed the ELrepo drivers. The docked dual monitors worked fine (used in a triple monitor setup, just like the ATI card in the M6500). So I decided I would try the HDMI port. Well, it did exactly the same thing the M6500 with the ATI card did. The symptom is that the laptop screen will blank, then come back for a bit, then blank for a few seconds then come back; lather, rinse, repeat. I hadn't tried the M6500 in a while with it, so I'm going to try it again and look at the Xorg log, but my recollection is that the symptoms and log were the same. There isn't any error condition reported in the Xorg log; it just doesn't ever display anything on the projector. While I realize that the nvidia drivers are ELrepo packages, the same symptoms happened with the M6500's ATI with the stock CentOS 7 ATI drivers; it worked beautifully one day, then some updates came, and it just quit working, using the same projector, cables, and receiver. I don't recall exactly where in the 7.x cycle this happened, unfortunately. I may give the original 7.0 a whirl then the original 7.1 a whirl, but I think it started with the 7.2 release. It could be the receiver in the middle, and I'll try a direct cable to the projector. But I tried that with the M6500 and it didn't change anything. But, again, the docked triple-head configuration works like a champ. I will perform more testing and update as I find things.

Desktop for newbies

Folks I'm about to set up a non-root user on a Centos=7 server that I control for a friend. It is in his home, so access is local. He's a refugee from the latest Windows 10 Upgrade. I'd like a suggestion as to which of the several possible graphical desktops to suggest to him and set up for him as his default. My aim is: - Allow him to try out Linux as an end-user - Let him start to feel comfortable with the desktop - Learn the new idioms for familiar programs and functions And later - Give him his own system with root privileges. Suggestions? David

3rd and 4th keys keymapped in Keyboard Layout???

Looking at the Keyboard Layout in CentOS 7.2, there are a 3rd and 4th characters for many keys. E.g., for 'd' there are the division sign and the degree symbol. I've tried the obvious key combinations-- Alt-d, Alt-Shift-d, etc.-- but no luck. Is there some configuration change I need to make in Gnome...? or what do I need to do to access these 3rd and 4th key characters? tia

Kerberized NFS client and slow user write performance

We seem to be increasingly hit by this bug: https://access.redhat.com/solutions/2040223 "On RHEL 6 NFS client usring kerberos (krb5), one user experiences slow write performance, another does not" You need a RH subscription to see that in its entirety. But the subject basically says it all: randomly, one or more users will be subjected to *terrible* NFS write performance that persists until reboot. There is a root cause shown, but that is cryptic to non-kernel devs; it doesn't explain from a user perspective what triggers this state. (That's why it appears to be random to me.) There is no solution or workaround given. This appears to be on a per-user + per-server basis, so a crude workaround is to migrate the user to a different server. And we do regular reboots, which somewhat hides the problem. My question to the list: has anyone else dealt with this? The link says "Solution in Progress", but that was last updated nearly a year ago. We don't have any support contracts with upstream, just the website access subscription, so I doubt RH will offer any help. Appreciate any suggestions! Thanks, Matt

An rpm intended for a bleeding edge Fedora builds perfectly for me when I comment two macros apparently not in CentOS 7 - %transfiletriggerin and %transfiletriggerun Looks like they operate similar to %post and %postun but are different. Is a simple way to do what they do in CentOS 7 or do I have to change the packaging logic to build in CentOS 7 and have things work properly? -- -=- Sent my from my laptop, may not be able to respond timely

Python and LibreSSL Patch

One of my hobbies (I need a life) is working on getting stuff to build against LibreSSL in CentOS 7 Part of that involves some test (not production) machines where openssl has been removed. Discovered some issues with Python built again LibreSSL - it passes the test suite in %check if you just change the BuildRequires but the result is some modules have some unresolved symbols the test suite oddly didn't catch (e.g. RAND_egd and some sslv3 stuff) http://awel.domblogger.net/7/purelibre/Python-2.7.5-rhel7-libressl.patch.txt That patch takes care of all of those (I think) as well as fixing the test suite - which fails after fixing python for the unresolved symbols unless disabling the checks that simply won't work with LibreSSL Anyway the patch has fixes from a variety of places as well as a few of my own. In *theory* it should also work if rebuilding the RHEL/CentOS against an OpenSSL build with SSLv3 removed. Though it might be interest to some. Patch doesn't apply to pristine Python 2.7.5 but to Python 2.7.5 after the various Red Hat patches are applied. -- -=- Sent my from my laptop, may not be able to respond timely

FYI. if anyone has problem the new thunderbird update 45.4.0 trying to start with Lightning calendar and gets the "Add-ons Manager" tab error message of a missing component, click the "Extensions" to left. in Lightning 'bar', select [Disable], restart thunderbird, problem solved. i do not use Lightning calender, so problem was easy to solve. if you have been using Lightning calender, problem may not occur. -- peace out.
