Unable to boot CentOS 6 - Segmentation Erorr

Hi all, I had an issue this morning with one of my virtual machines. It wouldn't boot (into any runlevel), nor could I chroot into the root partition using a rescue disk. Unfortunately I didn't grab a screenshot, however the error(s) when booting were: /pre-pivot/50selinux-loadpolicy.sh: 14 <other messages> init: readahead main process (425) killed by SEGV signal init: readahead-col lector main process (421) killed by SEGV signal init: rcS pre-start process (425) killed by SEGV signal init: Error while reading from descriptor: Bad file descriptor init: readahead-col lector post-stop process (424) killed by SEGV signal init: rcS post-stop process (427) killed by SEGV signal init: readahead-disable-services main process (428) killed by SEGV signal When using a rescue CD and chrooting into the root partition, I would get : Segmentation Fault: Core Dumped In the end, the fix was to boot into a rescue CD with networking, and SCP the entire contents of /bin and /sbin from another (working) server to the broken installation. This finally allowed CentOS 6 to boot correctly. So I'm left to assume some of the files in /bin *or */sbin were corrupt. My question is, does anyone have any ideas on how this might have happened? I did do a quick memory test using the rescue CD (it didn't complete) and there weren't any errors. The virtual machine is running on VMWare with 3 other VMs, which all seem fine. There wasn't any unexpected power loss either. Thanks.

CentOS 6.8 Apache-2.2.15-53 re-write question

I was wondering if somebody could help me with an Apache re-write rule. Apparently CentOS 6.8 is running apache-2.2.15-53. I am trying to redirect all pages except for two pages. The apache rewrite directives in the httpd config are: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI}!^/test/ RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI}!^/my-folder/ RewriteRule (.*) http://www.newdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L] These commands should cause all requests to get re-directed to www.newdomain.com except for those with a /test or /my-folder on the end of the URL. However when I place these commands into the the httpd config apache spits out this error message: Starting httpd: Syntax error on line 31 of /etc/httpd/conf.d/olddomain.conf: RewriteCond: bad argument line '%{REQUEST_URI}!^/test/ I have of course renamed the real config parameters. Can somebody tell me if these directives only work in apache-2.4 and if so how do I do the same thing in apache-2.2? If these directives should work in apache-2.2 is this an apache problem? Hello, I have several virtual machines, all with CentOS 6.x and one so called virtual server at a web hoster my virtual machines (VMware) were all installed manually using the .iso, some exist longer and therefore were originally a CentOS 6.3, some are newer and wer originally a CentOS 6.6; and this virtual server has been installed using a preconfigured image from the web hoster; on all this virtual machines and the virtual server several 'yum update' brought them to same release, not CentOS 6.7, as I havn't updated to 6.8 yet; at the virtual server I find this export LS_OPTIONS="--human --color=always" alias ls='ls $LS_OPTIONS' alias ll='ls $LS_OPTIONS -l' alias l='ls $LS_OPTIONS -Al' in /root/.bashrc on my virtual machines I can't find this settings; nor doesn't 'env' show a variable 'LS_OPTIONS' but 'alias' shows this: alias cp='cp -i' alias l.='ls -d .* --color=auto' alias ll='ls -l --color=auto' alias ls='ls --color=auto' alias mv='mv -i' alias rm='rm -i' alias which='alias | /usr/bin/which --tty-only --read-alias --show-dot --show-tilde' the aliases for cp, mv, rm are explained by the first part of /root/.bashrc (not quoted above) alias rm='rm -i' alias cp='cp -i' alias mv='mv -i' when I comment out the above shown part of /root/.bashrc on the virtual server 'alias' shows the same as on my virtual machines (VMware) but where are these aliases alias l.='ls -d .* --color=auto' alias ll='ls -l --color=auto' alias ls='ls --color=auto' alias which='alias | /usr/bin/which --tty-only --read-alias --show-dot --show-tilde' set? Fail to load kernel module ipmi_si on CentOS-6

Hi all, I am trying to load kernel module ipmi_si, while failed with error "No such device", truth is I can find file in ../kernel/drivers/char/ipmi/ipmi_si.ko. So why I can't load it? Systemd and VirtualBox

The continuing challenges of getting a workable server continue. The latest spins of VirtualBox seem to have solved the issues of DKMS auto compiles of the driver being aborted. The yum updates work as expected, provided one stops the running vms manually first. However, trying to get systemd to start the vms is proving to be a PITA. I have extensively googled and found that there are no specific instructions for Fedora/Redhat/CentOS and VirtualBox setups for systemd. No idea where to from here, so if there is anyone that has a working systemd autostart VirtualBox setup on a headless CentOS 7 server - please advise what you have done to get it working. Or any systemd gurus that can point me at the specific foo required to beat this deamon into submission. TIA Rob P.S. I deliberately set up the VirtualBox vms under a non privileged user account. I have tried setting up a symbolic link from /root to the ~/username/VirtualBox\ VMs folder and made root a member of the virtualboxusers group - no difference, as expected, but getting desperate.

I'm starting to think that the delloem is broken; either it's ipmitool, or A side note, for the person who suggested uname -s - that produces Linux. -n produces the FQDN. mark

Redefine ethX interface names in CentOS 5.11?

Hi, I have a LAN server running CentOS 5.11 with two NICs eth0 and eth1. I'd like to swap the interface names, but I don't know how to go about that under CentOS. Here's what I would do on a Slackware server (I have one next to me in my office).
