Since memory has become quite cheap lately I decided to move from 2 GB to 6. When I installed the memory every thing was fine until I went to run level 5. At that point the screen turned to garbage and the system froze. Is there a way to fix this so I can use the memory I bought? Do I need a new display card? SSD for Centos SWAP /tmp & /var/ partition

Has anyone actually used a SSD in a Centos setup? My little experiment with a s/h WD drive for /tmp and SWAP partitions kicked the bucket on Wednesday, when the poor WD drive caught the click-of-death. It was a s/h drive to start with and lasted about 4 months. But that was without the /var/log/ partition being written to it, as I mounted that back onto /var/log from the original drive. So I had to install another (WD) drive, and repartion it and rebuild my RPM package database, from the backed-up Packages file. That seems to be all OK now. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to use a new SSD for moving all the disk i/o to, that Linux likes to do so often. Plus putting SWAP onto a decent SSD should speed things up somewhat. Here's a short video of a laptop fitted with a SSD drive booting macOS, compared to a similar laptop booting from the standard HDD. The laptop with the SSD boots and loads some apps in 28 seconds. I want to connect to a l2tp server from centos.

I have a server currently connecting to a pptp remote server. This server(lns\lac) has the option for pptp connections and l2tp connections. The l2tp connections are not using ipsec encryption at all. I have seen couple guides\tutorials on the internet: - https://raymii.org/s/tutorials/IPSEC_L2TP_vpn_on_CentOS_-_Red_Hat_Enterpris… - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/L2TP/IPsec_VPN_client_setup But all the guides that I have found are using ipsec with "secret". On ubuntu there is a gui applet that helps setting these kind of connections up but I am working with a CentOS server and not Ubuntu desktop. If someone used l2tp the same way I want to use on CentOS 7 please give me some advice. If you have a guide which might help me I will be more then happy to see this one. Thanks, Eliezer

How to block routing/forwarding with firewalld

On CentOS 7 with firewalld I have a box with numerous interfaces acting as a NAT gateway. This works but I noticed that it routes/forwards traffic not just from my internal zone to external zone but also between interfaces within the internal zone. How can I prevent that traffic? I've tried adding direct and rich rules to deny the traffic but it doesn't work. Direct: firewall-cmd --direct --add-rule ipv4 filter INPUT 0 -s 10.110.4.0/22 -d 10.110.0.0/22 -j REJECT That command works, and I see it in `iptables -L` but traffic is still allowed. Rich: # firewall-cmd --zone=trusted --add-rich-rule='rule family=ipv4 source address=10.110.4.0/22 destination address=10.110.0.0/22 reject' Error: INVALID_RULE: destination action I can't find any explanation of what that error means. KDE 4.14.8 -- 'Leave' - no suspend to disk

greetings one and all. just what is a better way to suspend kde on a laptop? for a programmer to write 'leave' routines and not have option to 'suspend to disk', tells me the programmer; does not own a laptop is mad at laptop owners because he does not have one has stock in companies that make batteries for laptops to be serious about this, just where should i post/write to get in contact with someone who can see about getting this problem corrected? any/all suggestions/answers greatly needed. tia. -- peace out. users unable to log into kde after 6.8 update

greetings to all. centos = 6.8 current system = toshiba l455d-s5976 laptop a new problem has developed after 1st updating of 6.8. regular user is not able to open kde desktop, can open gnome desktop. root user can open either kde or gnome desktop. as a user, when i try to open kde, after entering password, screen goes to a solid blue, then shows a quick full screen view of command line text, too quick to read, then screen changes back to login prompt. logged in as root, i created a second user, still have same results as above. searching thru 2+ years of local archives revealed nothing, nor does web searching. any advise, recommendation, suggestion appreciated. tia. -- peace out. -+- Tired of having your microsoft os hacked? Broadcom BCM4313 support broken with kernel 2.6.32-573.7.1.el6.centos.plus.x86_64?

Hello, I noticed that with latest kernel (2.6.32-573.7.1.el6.centos.plus.x86_64), my laptop's Wifi doesn't work, whereas with previous kernel (2.6.32-504.30.3.el6.centos.plus.x86_64), it works fine. Is this a known issue or did I miss something new? BTW, `lspci` says: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11bgn Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01) Regards, -- wwp

CentOS 7: System log has repeated lines: Started session 123 of user root.

The system log (/var/log/messages) of a CentOS 7.2 system has frequently-repeated message line pairs like: Jul 18 14:00:01 localhost systemd: Started Session 307 of user root. Jul 18 14:00:01 localhost systemd: Starting Session 307 of user root. where the session number increases each time. Looking around on this, e.g. Red Hat Bugzilla bug 727315, it looks like it's when crond starts a task; it looks like it might be fixed - I would think that would be in CentOS but don't know how to find/compare the Fedora and CentOS systemd versions to know for sure. I found a post on a workaround - in /etc/systemd/system.conf to change the line: #LogLevel=info to: LogLevel=notice I did that and rebooted, and it has stopped the messages. I'm worried though that this may have knocked out something of actual interest from the syslog. So my question is, is there a better way? A way that info messages could go to some other log, or better yet, a way that those particular "session" messages, and only those, could go to some other log or be filtered out?

Does e2fsck.conf contain "broken_system_clock = 1" per default on CentOS7?

Hi, on all of my CentOS7 VMs on different hypervisors the config file e2fsck.conf contains the line broken_system_clock = 1 I found this because on all of them, the root partition was not checked triggered by interval setting with tune2fs. Do you see similiar /default/ settings on your machines? Is it an issue only on VMs? I have no CentOS7 host on bare metal to compare. Thanks and cheers, Gabriele

ElasticSearch Logrotate not working

Hey guys, I have this log rotation script setup in my /etc/logrotate.d folder /var/log/elasticsearch/*.log { daily rotate 100 size 50M copytruncate compress delaycompress missingok notifempty create 644 elasticsearch elasticsearch } And I notice that log files are still being generated that are upwards of 7 or 8 GBs. Can anyone point out to me where the script is going wrong, and why log files for ES are growing so incredibly big? I would think that having that logrotate script in place should solve that problem. CentOS 6.7->6.8, ssh-add issue

Folks, I am perplexed. I updated my workstation at work Wed before I left, from 6.7 to 6.8. Then, yesterday, I went to use ssh-add -s libcoolkeypk11.so, which I've done many times before to add the certs from my PIV card... and 100% of the time if fails, letting me SSH_AGENT_FAILURE, cannot add card. Now, using a script called sccr, which uses my public and private key to generate a one-time password (we use the to sudo to root), works with no problem. I used my card to go into the data center this morning, which also reads my card, and had no problem. I've tried eval $(ssh-agent) to start a new instance. Nothing works. Also, pklogin-finder finds the cards, asks for my PIN< and it works. Clues for the poor? mark

SAS drive not showing [SOLVED]

*Finally* found the answer. The case was, if you'll recall, that I had replaced a pair of older, smaller drives with a couple of 8TB SATA drives, and made it RAID1 using the PERC firmware. I was then going to wipe the drive. First, the old ones turned out to be SAS, no SATA. I had tried shoving it into a similar Dell, which I regularly use for shoving SATA drives in, and copying over the network, then putting them (larger drives) in place of the ones they were replacing on other servers. This just wouldn't show as /dev/sdx, the way the SATA did. The solution: a script I found on the 'Net lsi.sh, which depends on you having MegaRaid on the box, shows the four drives, but that one was listed as "unconfigured good". What I needed to do was use MegaCLI64 to first display foreign configurations... and regardless of the other three SATA drives, did show only one, and that was from this SAS drive. I then did a clear foreign configuration. After that, I could use PDMakeJBOD, and all is wonderful. mark

LXC containers - systemd takes a long time to start

I've got a CentOS7 server (fully patched) and in it I'm running several LXC containers. I've noticed that whenever I try to launch a service via `systemctl start <service_name>` soon after LXC boot, it will take ~5 minutes before the prompt returns. After that initial delay, starting/stopping/restarting services happens immediately. It might be that this happens because the server is running a large number of (>20) containers. On next reboot, I'll see if it has the same problem when I have just one container. In the meantime, anyone else seen similar behavior?

I was starting my Thunderbird via a script and I thought I would post that the name of the desktop file has changed to help anyone else who was running the desktop file from a script. Mounting NFS subdirectories individually or just the parent?

Hello, does it in any respect (throughput/performance, cpu load, I/O load, resilience, ...) matter, if one mounts subdirectories of an NFS (v3) export into separate directories or if one just mounts the parent directory? I.e. like this: server:/export/base/a -> /mnt/a server:/export/base/b -> /mnt/b server:/export/base/c -> /mnt/c server:/export/base/d -> /mnt/d server:/export/base/e -> /mnt/e or simply like this: server:/export/base -> /mnt I would guess, that it doesn matter at all, but at $work the standard setup on all cluster nodes is, to mount >20 subdirectories from the NFS server individually and the justification is, that is more performant and reliable. Can this be confirmed (or denied)? I couldn't find this method of "NFS performance tuning" mentioned anywhere and from a management perspective the sheer amount of mounted filesystems makes the list confusing and harder to troubleshoot. Any thoughts? Regards frank

CentOS 6 and an SAS drive, hardware

This is... odd. Got a 6.8 box, a Dell R320 lspci tells me 01:00.0 RAID bus controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic MegaRAID SAS 2008 [Falcon] (rev 03) so it *should* accept an SAS drive. I've got a Cheetah that's a few years old, and having pulled it out of another server (in the datecenter), I put it in this box to zero it out for reuse... and the box refuses to see the drive. *Nothing* in dmesg, *nothing* in /var/log/messages, and I tried echo "0" etc to get the SCSI buses to rescan. Anyone have any ideas? mark

How to convert /etc/machine-id into a default-duid for IPv6 static DHCP?

Hi, The use-case is deploying C7 VMs with a pre-set machine-id and default-duid based on the machine-id to facilitate static DHCP with IPv6. The default-duid is found in dhclient6-<value>-eth0.lease and IPv6 DHCP uses default-duid like IPv4 DHCP uses MAC addresses for static DHCP. How does one convert /etc/machine-id to a default-duid (in bash)? 1) /etc/machine-id -> DUID: <read RFC6355 and try to grasp the NetworkManager code at [0] & [1]> Use sha256 hash of machine-id, use first 128 bits, add colons and prepend 00:04: $ MACHINE_ID_SHA256=`cat /etc/machine_id | sha256sum | cut -c1-32` $ TMPID=$(sed -e 's/.\{2\}/&:/g;s/.$//' <<<$MACHINE_ID_SHA256) $ DUID=00:04:`echo $TMPID` Correct? 2) convert $DUID to a default-duid. Example value of default-duid can be found in /var/lib/NetworkManager/dhclient6-<string>-eth0.lease. Will stick the pre-set default-duid in /etc/dhclient6.leases so it gets picked up by NM once the VM is deployed and started. So going from e.g. /etc/machine-id 52d8c0f2a04a462a9c9ac1a906446d85 to duid 00:04:a6:89:54:e8:bf:e2:13:71:82:3d:ea:33:4d:a5:2f:75 to default-duid ??? example: default-duid "\000\004%\011\324\251\274\334\001c\304\366\275\314\220\357\255("; So how does one create the default-duid from the duid? The default-duid seems escaped octal with some chars here and there. The NetworkManager code at [2] that does the duid->default-duid conversion is above my pay grade. Anyone know how do this conversion preferably in bash? CentOS 6, iscsi issue

Hi, folks, Ok, I had iscsi working. Then I umounted the filesystem, and deleted the logical volume, then the RAID, and recreated it with a) 4 more drives (or was it six?), gave it a new RG name, and a new VD name. I can ping the IP, but can't rediscover it - just get "no portals found". I'm finding a fair number of people with this issue, googling, but not a lot of answers. Anyone know what I've done wrong? mark

Mysterious change in directory ownership and removal of the execute bit on directory

In the following sequence of commands, you can see directory /7.2.1511/ will change of ownership to another user and the execute bit is removed. This user, lbfay, is actually my own user but I am not logged on the server while running rsync with root. ?barracuda? listing in logwatch session 123 of user root.

My nightly logwatch report had a never before seen section last night, "barracuda spam firewall". I have not problem with the emails it noted as being rejected. But I've always thought of "barracuda" as a commercial product. I have neither configured nor enabled any barracuda software and "yum list '*barrac*'" comes up empty. What is this? Jon -- Jon H. CentOS6 - Stop NUX Skype auto-start with gnome desktop

How does one configure Skype/Gnome such that one can have Skype installed but not auto-start when the Gnome desktop opens? I have looked in the 'System/Preferences/Startup Applications' menu but Skype is not listed there. There are no options in the Application itself that allow this setting either. If there no other way then I will remove the application package and re-install when I need it. But surely there is a way to control this behaviour and the problem is that I simply cannot find it. Hi When I install package on CentOS7 with below command : yum install <package_name> I will hit errors like: # yum install httpd Loaded plugins: fastestmirror http://centos-distro.1gservers.com/7.2.1511/os/x86_64/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] HTTP Error 403 - Forbidden Trying other mirror. To address this issue please refer to the below knowledge base article https://access.redhat.com/solutions/69319 If above article doesn't help to resolve this issue please create a bug on https://bugs.centos.org/ The link need an RedHat Product Series Number to access but I do not have one. So not read yet. I did a few search can sure about below information: 1. Do not using http_proxy in my env 2. SElinux and firewall is closed 3. yum clean all do not help I also try to replace all files in my /etc/yum.repos.d with files from a working machine. But still have error. One more thing I did is to add timeout=9999 minrate=0 in /etc/yum.conf. Because if I do not do this. Help with C7 start script

Under the old C6 I put an entry in rc.local to run my programs I want. We will call it /path/boot.sh Worked fine. Under C7 I have created a new service file for systemd. It looks like: --------------- [Unit] Description=Company After=network.target [Service] Type=forking ExecStart=/path/boot.sh [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target ----------- For the most part this works every time on boot. However - when I do a "yum update" and the kernel changes part of my boot.sh is to detect that kernel change and recompile some of my drivers. The kernel change is detected and the recomiling starts - but after some time the process just stops. If I rerun it manuall it will then complete as normal. So my question is - Is my service script above not complete? Is they system looking for it to exit in a certain amount of time and it hasnt exited so it KILLs my script ? something like that ? What is missing from my script so it does not kill it after some time ? Thanks Jerry

Problem with cloud-init on re-boot

I've actually disabled cloud-init, but I'm wondering if there is a simple solution to the problem? Actually, I don't remember installing cloud-init; maybe it was brought in by some other package? mate crash

While playing an audio in totem, the mate desktop crashed. I couldn't switch to a console like I use to be able to do with ctrl-alt-F{n} - seems that is gone is from CentOS. I couldn't open a terminal by right clicking on the desktop. I was able to open a folder, navigate to /usr/bin and open gnome-terminal that way and issue the shutdown command. Since switching to virtual consoles no longer seems to work, what is the proper way to deal with rebooting a system when the window manager with all its menus crashes? CentOS 7 -- -=- Sent my from my laptop, may not be able to respond timely

PolicyKit calls fail from rtkit-daemon

Hi everyone, I'm having some odd system behavior on two CentOS 7 machines. I suspect that the trouble is related to polkitd and dbus I think that the following error message is a key clue, but I'm not sure how to continue troubleshooting it:. --------------------------begin log----------------------- Jul 15 10:00:27 localhost rtkit-daemon[1609]: Warning: PolicyKit call failed: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. --------------------------end log----------------------- I can confirm that things seem to temporarily improve by killing polkitd and letting it be restarted by systemd. I was getting "out of memory" errors form polkitd until I increased the stack memory limit This is all part of various login issues when using the Gnome and Gnome-classic desktop environments over XRDP. I've temporarily disabled the GNOME and Gnome-classic environments for my users when sing RDP and set the default to MATE, since MATE seems to be acting correctly. KDE seems to be fine as well. command line file completion on CentOS 7

I have noticed on CentOS 7.2 that when I am doing command line file TAB completion it behaves differently. if I have a file /tmp/file 1.txt (notice the space) when I do: ls /tmp/file and hit TAB it works but if I do: more /tmp/file and hit TAB it does NOT work. What I get is 1.txt file versus just expanding to /tmp/file 1.txt Why are they not the same? Thanks, Jerry

Broken output for fdisk -l

Hi, There was some problem with our system so I re-installed the server with CentOS 7. Now, when I am trying to run 'fdisk -l' command, it is returning a broken output. It throws this error- "fdisk: cannot open /dev/sdc: Input/output error". There are valid /dev/sdd and /dev/sde devices which are mounted and they are accessible but, somehow /dev/sdc is having a problem and 'fdisk -l' is not returning the full output. vnc on C7

I am trying to get a remote screen on C7. I did the following on C7 server: yum install tigervnc-server cp /lib/systemd/system/vncserver@.service /etc/systemd/system/vncserver@:1.service systemctl daemon-reload edit /etc/systemd/system/vncserver@:1.service and replace <USER> with myuser su - myuser run vncpassword to set password systemctl start vncserver@:1.service systemctl enable vncserver@:1.service Then when I use something like vncviewer from a windows laptop into the linux desktop I get the password prompt, but the next screen says "oh no, something went wrong". yum returns error 'repolist 0'

greetings to one and all. a new iso burn w/ centos 6.8 failed to boot on a 686 32 bit mid tower box, but will boot a 32 bit laptop, so i dropped back to 6.7 which did boot. after install with centos 6.7, attempt to upgrade fails with 'repolist 0'. all desire repo files have enable = 1. searched thru past 4 yrs of personal archives, nothing found related to 'repolist 0'. ran web search for 'repolist 0' and 'repolist = 0' with all hits related to repo files having 'enable = 0'. any suggestions/ideas/clues as to solution of problem greatly appreciated. -- peace out. More googling, and then something I wouldn't have thought of: smartctl doesn't work on this HBA against /dev/sd*. Hi, folks, Got an older Dell R410, with an LSI 1068E PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS (rev 08). It *appears* that a) trying MegaRaid, and b) from what I'm googling, that what I need are mptfusion-related packages. Unfortunately, yum shows me nothing available in base, epel, or rpmfusion. Am I looking for the wrong thing, or does anyone have a source (no, I haven't looked at LSI, sorry Avago's website, which I don't find overly friendly...) mark

CentOS 7 and Glassfish 2.1.1

Hello. I have a server with CentOS 7 installed, on this server I installed Java 1.7 (java version "1.7.0_80") and Glassfish 2.1.1. The last few days I've ran into a problem: Glassfish process got killed twice and I don't have a clue why is getting terminated, I know that sometimes processes get killed if RAM is not enough; however on this server I have 62GB of RAM and 10GB of SWAP and Glassfish is configured to use only 15GB of RAM. I've looked on all the logs on /var/log and there is nothing there, I don't see any message that can't tell me why is the process being terminated. NetworkManger creates extra bonds; is this a bug?

Hi All, I see an unexpected beahviour from NetworkManager on CentOS 7.1. Using nmcli tool, I create a bond with two slaves as explained in the Red Hat 7.1 Networking guide. I enable slaves and master; bond works as expected. When I restart NetworkManager, it creates a new bond with the same name but not connected to any device. Two bonds with the same name is confusing for my other monitoring scripts. I'm wondering why a second bond is created? Help sought for email problem

My home server is running CentOS-7.1 I'm running postfix and dovecot on it. I collect email from a few sources with fetchmail and move it to ~/Maildir/cur/ with procmail. Or at least, I did do this. For some reason procmail has stopped doing its job, and the email that I collect is finishing in /var/spool/mail/tim/ I can't work out what has caused this, or what the cure is. I haven't changed postfix or dovecot config files, or .procmailrc. I did stop and re-start postfix and dovecot on the server, which I haven't done for some time, so it is possible some earlier upgrade has come into play. Hi, folks, I installed the iscsi packages, and I *thought* that the first thing to do was configure /etc/tgt/target.conf. Am I wrong? Did I have to configure iSNS on the RAID appliance? All that I find on the web, incl. upstream docs, is to install it, then start the service. What am I misunderstanding? mark, aka "Confused"

SELinux C7 audit

Hi list, I'm studying SELinux on my workstation and for this I've enforced. In a first time selinux was permissive and when switched to enforcing I had relabel some things. Due to my "nescience" about selinux and what I must configure, I'm waiting avc denied for specified services. Until today, I've configured successfully httpd, smbd. Today I've noticed that my bacula system does not work due to selinux denied because when bacula try to run pre/post job script I get access denied due to differences about context. Bacula is on bacula_t and in pre script I call commands in other context like: systemd_systemctl_exec_t ... (and other) Reading from RHEL DOC (SELinux Guide) I can accomplish to remove denied access using audit2allow and creating TE rules. I've runned: grep systemctl /var/log/audit/audit.log | audit2allow -M pol and I got 2 files pol.pp (compiled) and pol.te. pol.te reports: require { type systemd_systemctl_exec_t; type bacula_t; class file execute; } #============= bacula_t ============== allow bacula_t systemd_systemctl_exec_t:file execute; Loading this policy things "will work". Now this problem is solved by audit2allow and not by me. I don't know what is necessary to make pre/post job script to get work done. What are the meaning of rules on pol.te and why bacula can't do transiction between context? Hope in help. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm using centos 6.8. In order to build gstreamer 1.8.2, I install some new packages, such as python 2.7 and yasm. And cerbero is the build system for gstreamer, and downloads some new packages from network and build them, such libtool, glib. All new packages are downloaded, built and installed in my custom directory. I want cerbero use the new packages in my custom directory. It mean that, linux will search my custom directory first, and will search others if target program or lib is not found. How to make search priority for programs, static libs, shared libs, and pkgconfig files? Thanks! Regards Andrew

netbook screen suddenly goes black

Hi all! I'm running an up to date Centos-7 on my Acer Aspire One netbook. have been for, well, ever since C7 was released. Just had an event today that also happened 2 or 3 times with earlier systems installed, but I never pursued it. What happens is that suddenly while working away on the desktop the display suddenly goes black... not black as in turned off, I can see that the backlight is still on, but no image is displayed. Nothing I can do fixes it except a reboot. I've tried CTRL-ALT-BKSP, CTRL-ALT-DEL, alt+printscreen+r+e+i+s+u+b. none of them do anything noticeable. I've been looking at system logs and don't find anything that gives me a clue what is going wrong when that happens. neither dmesg, /var/log/Xorg*, nor /var/log/messages contins much. I've tried digging thru "man journalctl" and ultimately reading thru the output of journalctl with no arguments. Can anyone of you provide further hints on what I should be looking for or at? thanks! Securing RPC

Dear Community I hope you are all doing well. Recently I have been receiving several complaints from our service provider. Please see the complaint below: A public-facing device on your network, running on IP address XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX, operates a RPC port mapping service responding on UDP port 111 and participated in a large-scale attack against a customer of ours, generating responses to spoofed requests that claimed to be from the attack target. Please consider reconfiguring this server in one or more of these ways: 1. Adding a firewall rule to block all access to this host's UDP port 111 at your network edge (it would continue to be available on TCP port 111 in this case). 2. Adding firewall rules to allow connections to this service (on UDP port 111) from authorized endpoints but block connections from all other hosts. 3. Disabling the port mapping service entirely (if it is not needed). Unfortunately, I cannot disable NFS which lies at the root of this problem. In addition, I am struggling to find a proper tutorial of moving NFS from udp over to tcp. May I kindly ask you to point me in a direction or provide me with ideas on how to nail this thing in the .... Kind Regards Leon

When configure is run for 'gstreamer-1.8.2.tar.xz' on centos 6.7, error messages are reported as below: checking for GLIB... no configure: Requested 'glib-2.0 >= 2.40.0' but version of GLib is 2.28.8 configure: error: This package requires GLib >= 2.40.0 to compile. The drop commands at the beginning of each chain is for increase performance. It is my understanding that file gets read from top to bottom and applied accordingly. Therefore, applying them in the beginning will increase the performance by not reading through all the rules only to apply the default policy. 2. I know the above point will not really affect the performance, so it is more of getting into a habit of structuring the rules according to best practice, or at least establishing a pattern for myself.
