unrecognized device string

CentOS 6: cannot open gnome-session

Hello there, trying to open Session settings in GNOME's System/Preferences, I get this error: ===== Error opening current splash image. The current splash image filename is: /usr/share/pixmaps/splash/gnome-splash.png ===== I get this exact same error on 2 different CentOS 6 systems (up-to-date). On both systems, /usr/share/pixmaps/splash/ does not exist. Did anybody already face that issue? Creating the missing file (out of any .png) doesn't solve the problem: I don't get the error anymore but the Session setting never open. Regards, -- wwp

looking for graphing tools

Hi! I have bazillions of incoming (rejected) attempts to connect to my SMTP server, and I'm interested in separating out those that seem to come in huge bunches (e.g., the one from yesterday that ran for about 10 hours and sent over 4100 attempts), and graphing them so I can see the spacing and/or distribution in time. I can figure out some simple scripting to turn the maillog entries into times since the epoch, or other formats, if needed, but I have no experience with the various graphing tools availabe, or even what (or where) they are. I'd appreciate pointers-and-or-advice, should any of you have any such things to give. thanks in advance! CentOS 6 and luksOpen

Upgraded a RAID. Copied everything from backup. And then my manager said I had to encrypt the drive. I've done that, and made the filesystem, but I can't mount it. CentOS 6. I have the entry in /etc/crypttab, and a key in /etc/crypt.pw, and the luks UUID in /etc/fstab. I cannot find the command that tells it to create the device in /dev/mapper from the info in /etc/crypttab. Clues for the poor? Yes, the server will, at some point in the future, go to CentOS 7, but that needs my user to be off for a while, and his jobs run literally for weeks, with loads upwords of 30 on an HBS (honkin' big server).... mark

Updating to CentOS 7.3

I have remote systems that need updating. C5 and C6 systems. Is there a "method" that is out there that you can load an ISO of 7.3 on a different partition (other than root) tell the boot up process that the ISO is there, do a clean install, install everything, auto reboot, and now C7 is installed and running. Some configuring will be required after - but that is fine. The OS will be updated. Has anyone worked out something like that ? I'm shocked after all these years Redhat does not have a good upgrade path from version to version. Thanks Jerry

GPX files

I have a Garmin 78s marine GPS receiver and it stores tracks in GPX format. This is an XML encoded set of points giving longitude, latitude, time and sea depth. Garmin support viewing this via their Garmin Express product, but there only seem to be Windows and Mac versions. I've emailed them and await a reply. In the mean time, does anyone know of any Linux products that will emable me to view track data on a decent sized screen? I don't want to re-invent the wheel by coding up a hack myself. For me, the node.js stuff was to complex at the time I urgendly had to have a markdown-editor, right now, and I ended up with "Remarkable" for the fiddly stuff, but most of my editing is done in (g)vim. But, like most, that have taken a liking to a specific editor, my id be vim, eclipse, emacs, or else, we are looking in our most liked environment first. Nice to see it worked for you. Markdown editor for CentOS 7?

Hi, I recently discovered Markdown, and I'm currently using it to write some documentation for CentOS 7. https://github.com/kikinovak/formation-linux For the time being, I'm using my good old Vim editor for writing it. I turned off syntax highlighting, since this produces random results with Markdown. Pages are correctly displayed on Github, but in order to see them, I have to push them to the server. Now I wonder if there's a good WYSIWYG editor for Markdown, or at least something where I can check locally what the page looks like. Any suggestions?
