I am a bit of a noob with Linux and Centos but would like to be able to access an old external USB disk formatted JFS by OS/2. I have seen there is a kmod-jfs package on elrepo that ought to work with Centos 6 but am unsure how to install kmods without hosing my existing system... If anyone would like to be so kind to give me a short how-to, I would be very grateful. Thank you.

NFS mount on Centos 7 crashing

Hello, We have a VM (under KVM - a VPS service by our ISP) running CentOS 7. On it we have 2 NFS mounts, one for backup and one as a live file system (where there are two user homes as well): ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- # cat /etc/fstab /dev/mapper/centos-root / xfs defaults 0 0 UUID=7a3ae70a-8ef3-463b-8f5b-be4e2e7be894 /boot xfs defaults 0 0 /dev/mapper/centos-swap swap swap defaults 0 0 10.201.40.34:/data/col1/noc-bkups-1 /mnt/dd2500-1 nfs auto,noatime,nolock,bg,nfsvers=3,intr,tcp,actimeo=1800 0 0 10.201.40.34:/data/col1/hesperia-mount /hesperiamount nfs auto,noatime,nolock,bg,nfsvers=3,intr,tcp,actimeo=1800 0 0 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This setup has been working fine for over a year, even under significant load, without issues. However, yesterday, the "live" NFS mount (/hesperiamount) has started crashing. When bootingeverything is fine, but very soonafter boot we noticed that we lose communication to the mount, although the remote storage system is accessible(without reporting any errors) and no network issues have occurred. system slowdown

I have a CentOS 6 system that has suddenly starting significantly slowing down. It runs a django app with an Apache server and MySQL server. There is plenty of disk space and no process seems to be hogging the memory or CPU. But operations that used to take 5 minutes are now taking hours and hours. Coinciding with this slow down I see these messages in /var/log/messages (this is hand typed, as I can't copy/paste or send email from this system, although for a change I do have remote access via 2 VPN hops): kernel: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#5 stuck for 67s! [khungtaskd] kernel: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#7 stuck for 67s! [khugepaged] These messages started appearing today around 7 AM, which is when users started reporting the slowdown. They are still occurring periodically and the system is still slow. Are these messages caused by the slowdown or are they the reason for it? Are they useful in tracking down the problem?

Simple OCSP server ??

Hello list, I'm contemplating running my own CA to implement the new proposed ISP for validation of S/MIME certificates via DANE. I already use self-signed for my MX servers (with 3 1 1 dane records on TCP port 25) but I don't want to use self-signed for S/MIME for user specific x.509 certs because A) That's potentially a lot of DNS records B) That requires a hash of the e-mail addresses in DNS Instead, I will be using a wildcard in DNS with an intermediary that signs the user x.509 certificates. Using an intermediary to sign their certificates though means I can't just revoke their certificates by removing the DNS certificate, I'll need to provide an OCSP server for when one of their private keys gets compromised. I found https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Certificate_System/8.… but it looks like that is intended for enterprise, more complex than I need. Anyone know of a good simple script for providing OCSP ?? -=- Not relevant to question but just important for me to note, I will *not* be asking people to install my root certificate in their e-mail clients. I think it is a bad practice to get users in the habit of installing root certificates. I think the PKI system has way way way to many root certificates as it is. I want a world where DANE validates most certificates, and only a few root certificates are needed for things like banks where EV certificates are a must. DANE as a way to validate S/MIME I think will be a godsend to e-mail security, I hope clients implement it.

installer with centosplus kernel?

Hi all, Is there any way to get a CentOS 7 ISO with the centosplus kernel? I have some very old hardware I'd like to keep going if easy, but it has old NVidia network cards that need the forcedeth driver. Apparently this driver is now in the centosplus kernel, but if I use the default ISO I won't be able to get on the network to get the centosplus kernel. (Of course I can get the kernel to the machine in other ways, but over the network is by far the most convenient.) See https://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=7359 for more details. Installing support for Chinese text in Centos 7

I have just done a minimal installation of Centos7 followed by X Windows and the Mate desktop on a workstation. Although the default language is English, I would like to be able to write Chinese text in various applications. I seem to remember this was very easy to do in Centos 6 and Gnome: possibly only requiring only a simple 'yum groupinstall "Chinese Support"' after which I could use iBus to switch between languages. This does not seem to work in Centos 7. Suggestions? Thank you.

mdraid doesn't allow creation: device or resource busy

Dear fellow CentOS users, I have never experienced this problem with hard disk management before and cannot explain it to myself on any rational basis. The setup: I have a workstation for testing, running latest CentOS 7.3 AMD64. I am evaluating oVirt and a storage-ha as part of my bachelors thesis. I have already been running a RAID1 (mdraid, lvm2) for the system and some oVirt 4.1 testing. Now I added 6x 500 GB platters from an old server running Debian 8 Jessie with software RAID of a similar fashion as well. That would unexpectably prevent the system from booting past something like (I copied it from the working setup), I ran it over night, so it was actually about 16 hours: "A start job is running for dev-mapper-vg0\x2droot.device (13s / 1min 30s)" Can it be just some kind of a scan, which takes so long? The current throughput based on time (16 h) and capacity (3 TB) would be about 50 MBps. (Those drives can be pretty slow when writing, dd showed about 30 MBps, the write cache is off.) This is actually repeatable. If I unplug those drives and boot again, it all works. I don't know, if it helps but before that I had two screens full of: "dracut-initqueue[331]: Warning: dracut-initqueue timeout - starting timeout scripts" Well, I proceded without this array, and after it booted I connected the array of 6 hard disks again. They were recognized etc. The problem is, I cannot do much. I can dd from and to the harddrives, I can create and delete partitions but I cannot create an md raid array out of them, I cannot create a physical volume or format them with a filesystem. I even tried overwriting all of those harddrives with zeroes, which worked but didn't help at all with the creation of the array afterwards. mdadm --create /dev/md6 --level=5 --raid-devices=6 /dev/sd[cdefgh]1 "mdadm: cannot open /dev/sdc1: Device or resource busy" with pvcreate, it seems as if there was no device, but I clearly see it in /dev/sdc1... "Device /dev/sdc1 not found (or ignored by filtering)." partprobe yields: "device-mapper: remove ioctl on ST3500630NS_9QG0P0PY1 failed: Device or resource busy Warning: parted was unable to re-read the partition table on /dev/mapper/ST3500630NS_9QG0P0PY (Device or resource busy). This means Linux won't know anything about the modifications you made. device-mapper: create ioctl on ST3500630NS_9QG0P0PY1part1-mpath- ST3500630NS_9QG0P0PY failed: Device or resource busy device-mapper: remove ioctl on ST3500630NS_9QG0P0PY1 failed: Device or resource busy" In some forums, it was suggested, dmraid (yes, the old) could be the trouble. I eliminated this hypothesis (overwritten all with zeroes, fakeraid was never present with these disks). Also multipathd/ dm_multipath could be the trouble, someone suggested. The problem is, if I was to remove device-mapper-multipath, I would loose oVirt-engine, because it has multipath as dependency for some reason. Do you have any ideas? What logs/ information should I provide if you want to have a look into this. Best regards Adam Kalisz

C7 and spoofed MAC address

Got a problem: a user's workstation froze. He wound up rebooting, without calling me in first, so I dunno. But, and this is a show-stopper, when it came up, it came up with the firmware MAC, not the spoofed one. In /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcg-eth0, I've got the spoofed MAC address, and a UUID. In the grub.conf, I've got net.ifnames=0 biosdevname=0. But when I logged onto his machine, ip a showed eth0... but with the firmware MAC. And I'm wondering if it went to renew its IP address, and lost the spoofed MAC. That might explain his freezes. Anyway, does anyone have any idea if there's some networkmangler or systemd configuration that would force it to pay attention? Note that my hack to fix it was ifdown eth0/ifup eth0, and it's fine. mark

AMD Ryzen and CentOS

I have a new system with an AMD Ryzen 1600 CPU and I'm trying to run CentOS, so far without success. The only information I could find was a post reporting that CentOS 7 would crash during installation on a Ryzen system: https://www.centos.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=61831 . I tried updating to the latest elrepo "mainline stable" kernel, version 4.11 (by booting from a live CD and using chroot to enter CentOS: that worked), but the system still doesn't work properly. I'm using CentOS 6 but I'll switch to CentOS 7 if that will help. (But I assume that if installing the latest kernel didn't help, neither would going to CentOS 7.) Any suggestions? We transfer files from a VAN provider at 15 minute intervals using rsync over ssh. The setup is somewhat complicated in that the VAN will not permit direct rsync access and so we establish the link via sshfs and then mount remote location as local. My question is, given the above conditions and the following rsync command: /usr/bin/rsync --chmod=o+r --chmod=g+w --itemize-changes --remove-sent-files --times /var/spool/imanet/pick_up/* /var/spool/imanet/drop_off Under what circumstances would a file containing data at the remote end (/var/spool/imanet/pick_up/) arrive at our end (/var/spool/imanet/drop_off) as an empty file? OutlawCountry allows for the redirection of all outbound network traffic on the target computer to CIA controlled machines for ex- and infiltration purposes. The malware consists of a kernel module that creates a hidden netfilter table on a Linux target; with knowledge of the table name, an operator can create rules that take precedence over existing netfilter/iptables rules and are concealed from an user or even system administrator. The installation and persistence method of the malware is not described in detail in the document; an operator will have to rely on the available CIA exploits and backdoors to inject the kernel module into a target operating system. OutlawCountry v1.0 contains one kernel module for 64-bit CentOS/RHEL 6.x; this module will only work with default kernels. Also, OutlawCountry v1.0 only supports adding covert DNAT rules to the PREROUTING chain. My first take is that this doesn't represent a very serious threat. The case of C6, grub, and the missing menu

An important server accidentally got rebooted yesterday (ahem, shuffle). On boot, it insisited on an fsck. So I rebooted, intending to get to the grub boot menu, and tell it fastboot. Nope. In grub.ocnf, it's got timeout=5, but I'd see the std. POST, a blank for a very short time, then it would be booting. By repeatedly type "e" I got into the menu once or twice, but trying to edit a line, it would suddenly start typing 8.8.8.8... by itself (and no, the keyboard's just fine, thank you). The question is, why did it never offer me the menu? Everything looks normal to me in the grub.conf. mark

icecc/icecream for CentOS 7

Hello everyone, I'm looking for a way to install icecc/icecream on CentOS 7 for distributed builds, preferably like any other package rpm a repository. I already found some effort done by someone else to create an rpm package for CentOS 7 and published in a private repository : https://copr-be.cloud.fedoraproject.org/results/mbriza/Icecream/epel-7-x86_… This package already seem to work. However, if possible, I prefer a solution that is used/available for the whole world to use. I noticed that with CentOS 6 a iceream package was provided by the epel repositories. With CentOS 7 this package is not included anymore. Does anyone know if there is a chance it will be included in the epel (or some other thirdparty) repository for CentOS 7 again? [OT]multi-master DNS

Hello all, We have quite a bit of environment on "cloud". We are using our own domain names. For this purpouse we stood up a BIND9 DNS instance on Centos 7. And, this being the cloud, we enabled key based dynamic DNS for instances to register themselves when they are spun-up. We have a single master and multiple slaves. all is well, untill mater goes down and we need to spin-up additional instances. Single master has become somewhat of a bottleneck I have looked around, not able to find any solution, for a stable Multi-master DNS setup (outside of Windows AD). Does any one have any specific pointers? -Thanks in advance Vijay

systemd services and Restart?

I've been trying out the Restart= option in some of my own systemd service unit files - which appears to work fine However, I notice that this option is only used in a few OS provided service unit files - and was wondering about the wisdom of adding this capability to other daemons/services? (e.g. chronyd or ntpd, crond, rpcbind, etc, etc) - not that these daemons are likely to crash and need restarting that often ... Previously, I've used custom scripts to monitor the state of key daemons and restart or report their status as appropriate - but as systemd has 'Restart' and 'OnFailure' capabilities build in, these options could potentially make (my) life a bit easier ... Are there any potential pit-falls in using Restart with OS provided daemons/services? Thanks James Pearson

Today, for the first time, I noticed a process named "Web Content". I was running top because firefox was once again not allowing me to scroll. Having been down this road before, I would normally have just closed and reopened firefox. I needed to do it fairly often. Web Content was new. Eventually, I discovered "electrolysis" (why that name?) and the schedule: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Electrolysis#Schedule_and_Status , but I'm not sure how to read it. What the heck is "riding trains"? My firefox is 52.2.0 64-bit. yum.log says it was last updated on the 16th. As is unusual, I had a pretty good idea which tabs were using up the CPU, so getting scrolling back was not too hard, but my usual close and reopen did not work. Is this a new "feature" of firefox? Will close and reopen consistently fail to resolve CPU-burning issues? CentOS 6 and crypttab

Folks, I have an issue: I've gotten that drive that I posted about the other day encrypted, and things were looking good... until there was a problem with another RAID attached to the box, and I wound up having to reboot. What had been /dev/sdb came up as /dev/sdc. So... is there any way other than using /dev/disk/by-uuid/<uUUID> as the second field in /etc/crypttab to deal with this possibility? mark

Hi, Does anyone know of a good program for doing RDP to windows servers on C-7? The "Remote desktop viewer" program that comes with C7 is not reliable for me. I frequently have multiple long running RDP sessions and the keyboard will stop responding. The only way I can find to get it started again is to restart the program and login to the servers again. In addition, I cannot find a way to make copy and paste work. On the plus side, I like the way Remote desktop viewer displays the desktops in tabs. Suggestions? The only hypotheses I can think of are "my copies of bash or ci have been compromised" or "I am stupid". Enlighten me, please. Dave

CentOS 6: cannot open gnome-session

Hello there, trying to open Session settings in GNOME's System/Preferences, I get this error: ===== Error opening current splash image. The current splash image filename is: /usr/share/pixmaps/splash/gnome-splash.png ===== I get this exact same error on 2 different CentOS 6 systems (up-to-date). On both systems, /usr/share/pixmaps/splash/ does not exist. Did anybody already face that issue? Creating the missing file (out of any .png) doesn't solve the problem: I don't get the error anymore but the Session setting never open. Regards, -- wwp

looking for graphing tools

Hi! I have bazillions of incoming (rejected) attempts to connect to my SMTP server, and I'm interested in separating out those that seem to come in huge bunches (e.g., the one from yesterday that ran for about 10 hours and sent over 4100 attempts), and graphing them so I can see the spacing and/or distribution in time. I can figure out some simple scripting to turn the maillog entries into times since the epoch, or other formats, if needed, but I have no experience with the various graphing tools availabe, or even what (or where) they are. I'd appreciate pointers-and-or-advice, should any of you have any such things to give. thanks in advance! CentOS 6 and luksOpen

Upgraded a RAID. Copied everything from backup. And then my manager said I had to encrypt the drive. I've done that, and made the filesystem, but I can't mount it. CentOS 6. I have the entry in /etc/crypttab, and a key in /etc/crypt.pw, and the luks UUID in /etc/fstab. I cannot find the command that tells it to create the device in /dev/mapper from the info in /etc/crypttab. Clues for the poor? Yes, the server will, at some point in the future, go to CentOS 7, but that needs my user to be off for a while, and his jobs run literally for weeks, with loads upwords of 30 on an HBS (honkin' big server).... mark

Updating to CentOS 7.3

I have remote systems that need updating. C5 and C6 systems. Is there a "method" that is out there that you can load an ISO of 7.3 on a different partition (other than root) tell the boot up process that the ISO is there, do a clean install, install everything, auto reboot, and now C7 is installed and running. Some configuring will be required after - but that is fine. The OS will be updated. Has anyone worked out something like that ? I'm shocked after all these years Redhat does not have a good upgrade path from version to version. Thanks Jerry

GPX files

I have a Garmin 78s marine GPS receiver and it stores tracks in GPX format. This is an XML encoded set of points giving longitude, latitude, time and sea depth. Garmin support viewing this via their Garmin Express product, but there only seem to be Windows and Mac versions. I've emailed them and await a reply. In the mean time, does anyone know of any Linux products that will emable me to view track data on a decent sized screen? I don't want to re-invent the wheel by coding up a hack myself. For me, the node.js stuff was to complex at the time I urgendly had to have a markdown-editor, right now, and I ended up with "Remarkable" for the fiddly stuff, but most of my editing is done in (g)vim. But, like most, that have taken a liking to a specific editor, my id be vim, eclipse, emacs, or else, we are looking in our most liked environment first. Nice to see it worked for you. Markdown editor for CentOS 7?

Hi, I recently discovered Markdown, and I'm currently using it to write some documentation for CentOS 7. https://github.com/kikinovak/formation-linux For the time being, I'm using my good old Vim editor for writing it. I turned off syntax highlighting, since this produces random results with Markdown. Pages are correctly displayed on Github, but in order to see them, I have to push them to the server. Now I wonder if there's a good WYSIWYG editor for Markdown, or at least something where I can check locally what the page looks like. Any suggestions? My grub2-btrfs & yum-plugin-snapper

Hello Guys, Last Sunday I had the idea to expand my gameplay btrfs. Now what was missing was a yum plugin which worked like arch or opensuse. Ok, I told myself and learned a little python. Also something for grub2 to boot into a snapshot. My results are up on: https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/andybe/Centos7Btrfs/ grub2-btrfs (do not use grub-btrfs, this is the version before) yum-plugin-snapper The grub2 plugin is tuned to snapper and is therefore in conflict with yum-plugin-fs-snapshot (from archlinux). /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/snapper.conf [main] enabled=1 verbose=0 configs= update_grub2=False If no configs specified so is tried to make a global snapshot. Of course, comma-separated configs can be saved. CentOS Linux (0-rescue ....) CentOS Linux Snapshots Still a small note: here would be 6 entries for 2 kernel for each snapshot created. It can also cause the system to stop booting. This happened to me once grub.cfg 1.1MB was large, on fedora. If Grub2 is so installed that it looks for strange systems, a yum installation, because of grub2-mkconfig, also take a long time. It works as it is. The grub2 plugin needs a little bit work. But now analyse jet. I made ist failsafe for linux and linuxefi. For me, it was important to know whether such a thing under centos works, because yum-plugin-fs-snapshot is intended for several file systems. Can be helpful or not. Just something different for me. how to enforce sunit and swidth for root device/partition when installing?

Hi, how can I force the Centos 7 installer to use the particular sunit and swidth values that are matching the hardware raid device I´m installing on? The installer forces me to reformat the partition I want to install on :( It does not let me specify any options about creating the file system :( Even when I create the file system manually with correct values after telling the installer where to install and before beginning the installation, xfs_info shows different values for the file system than I used when I created it once I rebooted. So apparently the installer re-creates the file system again when I start the installation after it had me accept the changes it wants to make.

The distinction between "After/Before" and "Requires" is exactly for the reason you give; the ordering directives don't require anything, so without display-manager.service enabled, Before=display-manager.service is just a no-op. Actually, you might even want "BindsTo=autofs.service", which is stronger. Depending on your setup, you many want to look at converting your automatic mounts into systemd mounts, and depend on that directly, rather than on the autofs service. Just one little thing to note here that many don't realise. All mounts in the system (ie not manually via the mount command) are systemd mounts. There's a generator that makes mount units from fstab and it is the actual runtime mount unit that gets used. So with things in fstab you can still have a service require something like data.mount ... There's even a directive RequiresMountsFor to ensure that a path is mounted before that unit is started. Finally autofs is made even easier with systemd as all you need to do to declare a mount autofs is x-systemd.automount in the options field and then it'll only be mounted on demand rather than at boot.

I'm looking into 'porting' some custom init.d scripts that are in use on CentOS 6 boxes for use on CentOS 7 using systemd One particular init.d script needs to run after autofs has been started, but before X11 is started I'm guessing I could use something like: After=autofs.service Before=graphical.target Is this correct? However, I would like to use the same systemd unit file on servers that won't run X - will the above work? Or is there a better/another way of doing this? Thanks James Pearson

Unable to map more than 4 workspaces to keyboard shortcuts on C7.

Hi, I have a new install of c7 with the gnome desktop. I run it with 12 workspaces. Normally I create the shortcuts so that ctrl+f1 maps to workspace 1 ctrl+f2 maps to f2, etc. When I goto applications -> settings -> keyboard -> shortcuts -> navigation, I only have the ability to define "Switch to workspace" 1 through 4. There does not appear to be a way to map keyboard shortcuts for "Switch to workspace" 5-12. Does anyone know how I can add the ability to create shortcuts for workspaces 5-12? In previous versions (c-6 and older) the number of available keyboard shortcuts matched the available number of workspaces configured. Hello Guys I have written a small yum plugin. My question: How can I convert the arguments to a string to output them inside a hook. I can use many programming languages, but unfortunately no python to understand the documentation properly. http://yum.baseurl.org/api/yum-3.2.26/yum.plugins.ArgsPluginConduit-cla ss.html def init_hook(conduit): conduit.info(2, 'Hello world') conduit.getArgs() InitPluginConduit instance has no attribute 'getArgs' No matter if i put it into pretrans_hook or posttrans_hook. Some file management functions in the right mouse are missing

I find that Some file management functions, such as creating new file, arranging file by size, arranging file by data, etc., in the right mouse are missing, and the item "creating new folder is present, but it is grey. Hello Guys, I really wanted to just update mesa. But the Linux kernel was also done quickly. - Mesa 17.1.2 (remove sanitizy check, otherwise fail to built) - Kernel 4.11.4 can be found at: http://centos.cms4all.org/repo/7/kernel/ http://centos.cms4all.org/repo/7/mesa/ Unfortunately still no time found to care about winehq. using autofs on C-7

Hi all! I'm trying to set up autofs on my C7 netbook so I can automount a cifs share (actually two) from my NAS box, and because when I'm not at home I don't want it attempting to mount it. so I've read several howtos on it, including the one on the CentOS Wiki. but what I've got isn't working right, and I don't know why. I'm trying to follow the "even-better method", but am finding I don't understand the syntax of entries, so I'm flailing around trying different things. so, here's what I have now: in /etc/auto.master: /mnt/syno-fredex /etc/auto.syno-fredex I added /etc/auto.syno-fredex: /mnt/syno-fredex -fstype=cifs,rw,credentials=/root/.smbcred,defaults,uid=fredex,gid=fredex,noauto,users,exec,vers=3.0 ://nasbox/home my goal is to mount //nasbox/home as /mnt/syno-fredex so I do systemctl restart autofs and it appears to restart (no messages appear). when I then do "ls /mnt/syno-fredex" it doesn't appear to actually get mounted, and /var/log/messages doesn't show anything. kvm/qemu and CPU load

Hi, I have a server using its 4 physical network interfaces bonded, with the bonding interface added to a bridge. The bridge has the IP, and three VMs are using the bridge. Two of the VMs are running Debian, one is running Windoze 7. CPU load caused by the qemu-kvm processes is way higher than I´m happy with. One of the Debian machine causes around 22% while it´s basically idle, the other one is around 3%, and the Windoze one is around 50. They are all mostly idle. I can observe that when some network traffic is going on with the Windoze machine, it causes a CPU load of 200%. "Some network traffic" means that virt-top is showing 1M/2M RX/TX. Considering that the bonding interface is theoretically capable of handling 4Gbit full duplex, the 3Mbit are neglectable. Virtio drivers are being used. Currently, virt-top shows 1.9% CPU for the Windoze machine and top shows 22% CPU load for the corresponding qemu-kvm process. There is almost not network traffic. The VM has 4 CPUs assigned. What may cause the high CPU load? Something must be seriously wrong for an idle machine causing 22% CPU load and for the same machine, still basically idle, with a some network traffic to cause 200% CPU load on a Xeon 5690.

C6 or C7 for an old netbook

I've got an old HP Netbook, which is just fine for taking with when I'm travelling, to check email and news. I have a very old Ubuntu netbook-remix on it, and it really, *really* needs to be updated to something current. I, of course, would prefer CentOS.... The question is: I see that *if* the specs I just looked up (I'm at work, not home, where I could just turn it on, but they sound right) Atom N270 CPU, 2G RAM, 160GB drive - what should I put on it, C6 or C7? Upgrading the memory's not going to happen, so it's got to live with that size. Opinions (please, no flame wars), just what will be most responsive on a machine this small? mark

bind update flubbed somehow?

hey folks, we upgraded bind last night to bind-9.8.2-0.62.rc1.el6_9.1.x86_64 and now our server seems to not be able to update. Whenever we add records and update the soa and reload, it still shows the old data.. so for example, we have [root@bind1 /var/named]$grep servername domainname.net.zone [root@bind1 /var/named]$nslookup -port=5353 servername 10.115.76.87 Server: 10.10.76.87 Address: 10.10.76.87#5353 Name: servername.domainname.net Address: 10.66.35.106 but when I grep the file from the zone file, it is not there.. grep servername domainname.net.zone <returns nothing> ive tried restarting the named a few times.. Im not seeing much that looks like its related in the logs.. any ideas? there is no selinux enabled here. Jason

Crazy thought about upgrading to new major release

I have older systems out there that work fine, just for what ever reason would be great to upgrade from a C5 -> C7 (due to no longer supported) or C6 > C7 (for updated packages). Sounds like the upgrade tool is not quite an option... I was thinking... What would be wrong with any "easy" script that did the following: 1) Removed all packages with the --justdb option. 2) Import the RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-7 3) install the centos-release-7.3.1611 ... rpm 4) yum -y upgrade 5) yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop" (for example) and reboot of course. Does that have any chance or working and be valid? Thanks, Jerry

Domain Logout, then domain login again, profile corrupt -> replaced by TEMP profile

Hi I have had this problem for a while, but waited to post this until I upgraded to see whether the upgrade would fix it. I upgraded samba to the 4.2.X stream from 3.6.X stream, but it happens on both, 3.6.X and 4.2.10. Whenever someone logs out, then in again the profile gets corrupted and a new TEMP profile is created (the dreadful "creating new desktop"). Now I do not know where this problem is - the desktop or the server. It also happens if you wait 1/2 hour or so, never tried it longer. I can quickly fix this by: - tell the user to log out - rsync -avHAX the profile with yesterdays profile - tell the user to log in again Now if I log out on my workstation, then on the server I do a "smb reload", then log in again this problem does not happen. This morning a person logged out of his workstation, went over to the bigscreen in one of our training rooms and logged in there, then logged out, went over to his machine but got the dreadful "preparing desktop" on login .... C7 ansible 2.3 become_method: su not working

I just don't know what else to try. I've beat my head on this for 3 days now and it's becoming obvious that either Ansible 2.3 is a complete disaster, or the CentOS 7 package is a complete cluster. Here's my problem. I am working on getting an ansible server to manage about 100 or so CentOS 6 servers. All have an unprivileged user account setup (up to 3 years before I got here in April) but that user account isn't setup with sudo access. The way to get to root is 'su'. I'm not a newbie with Ansible as I used it extensively in my previous position to manage ~70 or so Ubuntu servers. The Ansible is CentOS 7. I'm working on getting Ansible to play nice with privilege escalation using SU and NAFT has worked. Here's an example (very simple) playbook: Because I'm having to use 'su' I have to either add the user password to the inventory file or use the --ask-become-pass parameter to the command line. Every time I do, I get this: [root@ansible ~]# ansible-playbook playbooks/radtest.yml --ask-become-pass SUDO password: It bombs timing out on privilege escalation. Every single time. I'm absolutely frustrated and am almost ready to throw ansible to the curb for something that doesn't suck so bad. But before I do, I'm asking the list, anyone seen anything like this before? I could post to the ansible list, but it's a google group and God knows when I might get a reply. BTW, setting up root with key-only auth is an option, but would be a real PITA to configure 100+ external servers by hand with the keys and reconfig sshd for it.

CentOS 7 install: closest mirror not supported?

Hi, Do CentOS 7 installs not automatically use a closest mirror for installing like Fedora does, or is that due to the way I'm starting the install (virt-install)? Background: I'm trying to find the best way to do installs using basic local media (network install, but *without* the need to download the squashfs.img for every install) but without a full local mirror. On Fedora (25), it works fine using a local boot.iso (virt-install -l), but with CentOS 7 you then have to manually enter a repository URL. I also tried a local kernel/pxeboot tree with LiveOS/squashfs.img (the latter similar to Fedora's install.img?) with no result. MySQL on Centos 7 (armv7)

Dear Community I am trying to install MySQL 5.6 on a Raspberry PI 3B. Using my normal procedure by downloading the yum repo rpm and installing MySQL through that is not working. There is no rpm information for arm7. Can anyone please point me in a direction where I can find a procedure on how to install MySQL 5.6 on Centos 7 running on a PI3? Kind Regards, Leon

yum install <olderversion> does not downgrade

We're using ansible to configure our CentOS 6 servers, and we have a task to install a specific version of a package: - name: install thrift2 yum: name=ripencc-thrift2-{{ version }} In this ansible task, the "version" variable is set by the operator. When we want to upgrade, it works. But today we had to downgrade, and noticed that ansible wasn't downgrading it. So we tried by hand (the installed version was 1.0.8): # yum install ripencc-thrift2-1.0.3 I don't have the output handy, because a colleague was working on it, but basically, yum said something like "package already installed" and refused to downgrade it, even though the package is in our repository. I have a strong sense that yum _used to_ downgrade packages if asked to install an older version, but perhaps I am misremembering. Nevertheless, I want to ask: is this a bug in yum? If asked to install a specific version, should it not upgrade OR downgrade as needed? Regards, Anand

CentOS 6.9, shredding a RAID

I've got an old RAID that I attached to a box. LSI card, and the RAID has 12 drives, for a total RAID size of 9.1TB, I think. I started shred /dev/sda the Friday before last... and it's still running. Is this reasonable for it to be taking this long...? mark

should NUMA be enabled?

Hi, should NUMA be enabled in the BIOS of a server that has two sockets but only a single CPU in one of the sockets? From what I´ve been reading, it is unclear to me if NUMA should be enabled only on systems with multiple CPUs in multiple sockets or if multiple cores of a single CPU in a single socket benefit from NUMA being enabled, and if memory access in general benefits from NUMA being enabled (in some other ways) even when there is only a single CPU in a single socket. It seems clear that NUMA should be enabled an can be taken advantage of when there are multiple CPUs in multiple sockets.

[CentOS 6] Possible bug in updating glibc?

Hey all, not sure if this was operator error or what. I'm running a KVM host on updated CentOS 6. The guest is built from the CentOS 6.9 dvd1 with just @base and @core package groups. When I went to install mysql it failed due to incompatibilities with the libcc versions. Updated just glibc and glibc-common and then installed mysql. Shortly there after it started to freeze and lost connection. The KVM host is fairly beefy and mysql wasn't doing anything but running with no queries or data. I rebooted the guest and it still had lock up issues. When I rebuilt the guest and did a full yum update, to include kernel and kernel-headers, it seemed to run fine. It seems like there's a dependency between glibc(-common) and something else. Or do I misunderstand? Thanks! Leam

Urgent: Need to change the location of a directory tree

Hi, I am running CentOS 7 (fully updated) on a VM. This has a mounted nfs share (via fstab) (which mounts a remote storage system) on which we have created the home directories of 2 users Here are the home directories: /mynfsmount | |--/user1 |--/user1 We want to move this whole branch from the mounted NFS share to the local disk. What is the way to do so? Would it be enough to create a "mirror" branch on the local disk, say: /mynfsmount2 | |--/user1 |--/user1 (which is no more an nfsmount, despite the name), then remove the mount from fstab and the initial mount point /scimount and finally rename /scimount2 to /scimount ? Does it sound OK? Will we need to modify any other system info so that the above homes work correctly at their new location? Thanks a lot, Nick

CentOS 7 + KDE: Okular view PDF files OK but prints a blank page

Hi, I recently installed CentOS 7 + KDE 4.14 on my main workstation, and overall I'm very happy with it. Okular seems to have trouble with some PDF files. I'm using the Dolibarr application to generate invoices. I can view the resulting PDF file OK, but when I try to print it, I get a blank page. A few days ago I had a similar problem with a PDF file generated from a french administration online form. On my previous installation (Slackware64 14.1 + Xfce + Evince built from source) I never had any trouble with PDF files. Any suggestions?
