SSD for Centos SWAP /tmp & /var/ partition

Has anyone actually used a SSD in a Centos setup? My little experiment with a s/h WD drive for /tmp and SWAP partitions kicked the bucket on Wednesday, when the poor WD drive caught the click-of-death. It was a s/h drive to start with and lasted about 4 months. But that was without the /var/log/ partition being written to it, as I mounted that back onto /var/log from the original drive. So I had to install another (WD) drive, and repartion it and rebuild my RPM package database, from the backed-up Packages file. That seems to be all OK now. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to use a new SSD for moving all the disk i/o to, that Linux likes to do so often. Plus putting SWAP onto a decent SSD should speed things up somewhat. Here's a short video of a laptop fitted with a SSD drive booting macOS, compared to a similar laptop booting from the standard HDD. The laptop with the SSD boots and loads some apps in 28 seconds. All,This happens on all of our CentOS 7 VMs. but as stated in the email trail, the file softlockup_thresh does not exist. Should it be added? What is the best way to get rid of this behavior. USB audio on Centos-7

I'm using Centos-7 on my PC, with ASUS motherboard. internal audio has always worked fine EXCEPT that I can never get audio input (for recording) to work. I want to feed audio from a phono turntable and from a cassette deck. I use a phono preamp for the turntable, or directly connect the tape deck. but either nothing, or low level with horrible distortion. so, I gave up (after years of intermittent battles) and bought a Behringer UFO202, which looks like it should work fine with Linux. It allegedly uses a TI PCM2902 chipset, which many online postings claim works fine with various flavors of Linux. This device has a USB port, a pair of line in and line out jacks, a phono jack, a headphone volume control, and a switch to change the line in to phono in. I can use headphones plugged into the UFO202 to listen to audio playing on the computer, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to feed audio into the UFO202 (via its line in RCA jacks) and have it come out speakers or phones connected to the computer. I've poked and proded at alsamixer, the mate sound tool, and pavucontrol. No useful results. Pavucontrol, in its input section, does show the device listed, and it shows activity on its level mater when there is audio input via the line in jacks on the UFO202. Disconnect the line input and the activity ceases. (Mate sound control also lists the device, but I don't even get an indication of any input at all, as I described above for pavucontrol.) but I simply cannot figure out how to get that audio to play in any audible way. I know that USB audio input works, because I have a Plantronics USB headset with microphone that I use often to converse online, and it works nicely. (and a possibly separate issue: how the heck does one point Audacity to a USB input? Can't find anything in its UI, and there's darn little help online that is actually helpful, in this regard.) Can you sense my frustration here? I'd appreciate any help that is actually helpful,... perhaps someone who reads this actually has one of these things and has made it work? thanks in advance! anaconda not installing to sda?

I'm having what appears at first glance to be a kickstart+anaconda issue on CentOS 7.4. As near as I can tell in the program.log in the anaconda environment, the partitioning instructions downloaded with the kickstart from cobbler appear to simply not be applied. Then /mnt/sysimage is not mounted, the logs are not copied to /mnt/sysimage/root and the installation stalls due to the anamon checking. (Also anaconda is trying to e2fsck /dev/loop devices which is puzzling.) If anybody has hints about what I would double-check or if you've resolved a similar issue I would be quite interested. More details: I see the same behaviour after cutting most items out of the cobbler kickstart template, however I confirm that /run/install/ks.cfg in the anaconda environment has the following: ignoredisk --only-use=sda zerombr bootloader --location=mbr clearpart --all part / --label="/" --fstype=ext4 --grow --asprimary program.log from the anaconda environment is here: https://gist.github.com/christopherwood/72f390d7e5788b9bc9e841d40c926895 The system does boot and install just fine from the CentOS 7.4 iso without being kickstarted. This is on vmware (esxi 6.0), I've tried with the paravirtual and lsi logic scsi controllers with the same result. I've tried different previously (CentOS 7.3) working cobbler profiles that do not work with 7.4 now. If I change the drive name (sda) to a ludicrous value anaconda simply errors, so at some level it's understanding about sda.

kmod-jfs on Centos 6

I am a bit of a noob with Linux and Centos but would like to be able to access an old external USB disk formatted JFS by OS/2. I have seen there is a kmod-jfs package on elrepo that ought to work with Centos 6 but am unsure how to install kmods without hosing my existing system... If anyone would like to be so kind to give me a short how-to, I would be very grateful. Thank you.

mounting an nfs4 file system as v4.0 in CentOS 7.4?

CentOS 7.4 client mounting a CentOS 7.4 server filesystem over nfs4. nfs seems to be much slower since the upgrade to 7.4, so I thought it might be nice to mount the directory as v4.0 rather than the new default of v4.1 to see if it makes a difference. The release notes state, without an example: "You can retain the original behavior by specifying 0 as the minor version" nfs(5) states: ** Recent kernels allow the minor version to be specified using the vers= option. For example, specifying vers=4.1 is the same as specifying vers=4,minorversion=1. ** but in fstab or on the command line, using either form (vers=4.0 or vers=4,minorversion=0), if I run mount afterwards, I still see vers=4.1 for the mount. I'm missing something obvious, but the only thing obvious to me is that I can't see it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Zube

NFS mount on Centos 7 crashing

Hello, We have a VM (under KVM - a VPS service by our ISP) running CentOS 7. On it we have 2 NFS mounts, one for backup and one as a live file system (where there are two user homes as well): ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- # cat /etc/fstab /dev/mapper/centos-root / xfs defaults 0 0 UUID=7a3ae70a-8ef3-463b-8f5b-be4e2e7be894 /boot xfs defaults 0 0 /dev/mapper/centos-swap swap swap defaults 0 0 10.201.40.34:/data/col1/noc-bkups-1 /mnt/dd2500-1 nfs auto,noatime,nolock,bg,nfsvers=3,intr,tcp,actimeo=1800 0 0 10.201.40.34:/data/col1/hesperia-mount /hesperiamount nfs auto,noatime,nolock,bg,nfsvers=3,intr,tcp,actimeo=1800 0 0 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This setup has been working fine for over a year, even under significant load, without issues. However, yesterday, the "live" NFS mount (/hesperiamount) has started crashing. When bootingeverything is fine, but very soonafter boot we noticed that we lose communication to the mount, although the remote storage system is accessible(without reporting any errors) and no network issues have occurred. We found that dmesg reports failures with call traces (2 examples): https://pastebin.com/GVSDbxFr https://pastebin.com/WujKQuHG This happens repeatedly/consistently (after several reboots) so we have been forced to replace the NFS mount with a local mount (on a new local virtual hard disk), to restore normal system operation. The share was manually mounted with the following command: # mount -vv -o auto,noatime,nolock,bg,nfsvers=3,intr,tcp,actimeo=1800 -t nfs 10.201.40.34:/data/col1/hesperia-mount /hesperiamount2 Questions: * Is this a known issue/bug? * Have we possibly made any NFS misconfigurations (which however have not caused any errors for about a year now)? * What could we do to prevent the error from occurring again? /var/run/... being deleted :((

Hi, what keeps deleting files and directories under /var/run? Having them deleted is extremely annoying because after a reboot, things are suddenly broken because services don´t start.

firefox and D state

Previously when firefox went catatonic to the point that I could not even scroll, its CPU usage had gone to 100%+. Now top tells me that firefox, Web Content (with a space) or sometimes kswap... has process state D, uninterruptable sleep. Any suggestions on how to deal? I often have a lot of tabs open, so discovering the right one was hard enough before. Usually, it was something relatively new, so that helped. Not so much anymore. I think a lot of it is just waiting (D) for ads or running them. LVM not activating on reboot

Hi I've recently rebuilt my home server using centos 7, and transplanted over the main storage disks It's a 3 disk raid5, with an lvm storage group (vg03) on there Activating and mounting works fine: # vgscan Reading volume groups from cache. Found volume group "vg03" using metadata type lvm2 # vgchange -ay 1 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg03" now active # lvscan ACTIVE '/dev/vg03/storage' [<1.82 TiB] inherit I can then mount /dev/vg03/storage as expected However on a reboot, boot fails if I add that entry to fstab: 'Timed out waiting for device dev-mapper-vg03\x2dstorage.device' I then have to activate it again with vgchange. I'm guessing I'm going to need a grub option, or do something with dracut but I'm a bit stuck here Thanks Duncan
