Memory vs. Display Card

Since memory has become quite cheap lately I decided to move from 2 GB to 6. When I installed the memory every thing was fine until I went to run level 5. At that point the screen turned to garbage and the system froze. Is there a way to fix this so I can use the memory I bought? Do I need a new display card? SSD for Centos SWAP /tmp & /var/ partition

Has anyone actually used a SSD in a Centos setup? My little experiment with a s/h WD drive for /tmp and SWAP partitions kicked the bucket on Wednesday, when the poor WD drive caught the click-of-death. It was a s/h drive to start with and lasted about 4 months. But that was without the /var/log/ partition being written to it, as I mounted that back onto /var/log from the original drive. So I had to install another (WD) drive, and repartion it and rebuild my RPM package database, from the backed-up Packages file. That seems to be all OK now. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to use a new SSD for moving all the disk i/o to, that Linux likes to do so often. Plus putting SWAP onto a decent SSD should speed things up somewhat. Here's a short video of a laptop fitted with a SSD drive booting macOS, compared to a similar laptop booting from the standard HDD. The laptop with the SSD boots and loads some apps in 28 seconds. Issues booting centos7 [dracut is failing to enable centos/root, centos/swap LVs]

Hello, I'm having a strange problem booting a new centos7 installation. Below some background on this. [I have attached the tech details at the bottom of this message] I started a new CentOS7 installation on a VM, so far all good, o/s boots fine. Then I decided to increase VM disk size (initially was 10G) to 13G. Powered off the VM, increased the vhd via the hypervisor, booted from CentOS livecd, selected "recover my centos installation". Then I used the following sequence of commands to make the new vhd size "visible" to the o/s ... - ran fdisk /dev/sda and deleted partition 2. (This is the LVM partition where the o/s is stored. The first partition is /boot [xfs] partition *non lvm*.) - created a new partition with same starting sector as before deleting it, but a different ending sector (to reflect to the increased space). - set partition type to 8e (lvm), saved settings and exit. - ran pvresize and lvresize to make new space visible to the o/s.All good, I can see the space increase on 'lvdisplay centos/root'. - ran 'mount /dev/mapper/centos-root /mnt/root' to temporarily mount the o/s partition. - ran 'xfs_growfs /mnt/root' to resize the o/s fs to the new size. It was successful and I could actually chroot to the o/s and verify new disk size. - rebooted and tried to boot from hdd this time. Grub menu shows up and loads default kernel (3.10.0-862.9.1.el7.x86_64). - after initial kernel boot up process, booting continues to initrd and then it's where the problem starts... - looks like dracut has issues locating/enabling /dev/mapper/centos-root (lv) and as a result it cannot boot to the 'real' root fs (/). - while in dracut shell, I execute the following command sequence: 1. lvm lvchange -ay /dev/centos/root 2. lvm lvchange -ay /dev/centos/swap 3. ln -s /dev/mapper/centos-root /dev/root 4. exit ...and the o/s boots fine...so looks like the pv,vg,lv is detected properly while in initrd, but somehow dracut has difficulties enabling the root,swap LVs ? - While in o/s, I rebuild initrd by using: 'dracut -f -v -a lvm' Note, I have to use '-a lvm' as for some reason, if don't, the lvm utils (lvm,lvm_scan) are not being included to the initrd, not sure why this happens. After rebooting, same thing happens, I have to manually boot the system via dracut shell. I'm a bit stuck at this point, any clues what I'm doing wrong in here ? Centos 7 on Dell Latitude E6500

Hi, I tried to install Centos7 x86_64 minimal 1503-01 from an USB flash drive on my old Dell Latitude E6500 laptop. boots up in text mode, switches text resolution, writes: Started Show Plymouth Boot Screen Reached Target Paths Reached Target Basic System. then hangs for some time, eventually starting dracut emergency shell. log says: multipathd: sdb: spurious uevent, path already in pathvec multipathd: sda: spurious uevent, path already in pathvec interesting: sdb is the internal 240GB kingston SSD drive (existing ntfs bitlocker partition recognized as sdb1) sda is the write protected USB stick, recognised as CDROM drive. 4GB rom intel 45 express chipset mobile intel GMA 4500MHD graphics intel 5100AGN wifi what to try next? any additional infos I can give you? thnx in advance. -- Best regards, Rainer mailto:rfu@oudeis.org

/boot partition too small

First off - let me say I am not an administrator. I need to know if there is an easy way to increase my /boot partition. When I installed CentOS 6 after running 5, it was my oversight not to increase the /boot size. it's too small and I can't do yum updates. if it's not easy to actually increase it, is it safe to take a chunk in my root filesystem (like /new.boot or something) and just mount it as /boot from now on so it uses the space or is that not a good idea? I am sure I could easily copy the rpms/kernel stuff over to it and then unmounts the real /boot and mount this new area as /boot. Can you administrators let me know what you think of all this? dmarc auth on incoming email

Just reading up on DMARC, toying with setting it up to auth against incoming emails. (but not configure my domain to use dmarc, or at least not yet) ran into an article about opendmarc, which is available on epel. but when I took a look at the opendmarc website and the git pages it doesn't appear to have been updated in several years. while I see that it is still available from epel, I wonder if anyone knows the project status? Is it still active? are there any other viable alternatives? thanks in advance! Desktop lag with CentOS7/Mate and high CPU usage

We have noticed significant desktop/UI lag on CentOS7 workstations using Mate when the CPU usage is high - i.e. the mouse pointer lags and moving windows (e.g. terminal windows) become jumpy (not smooth) We didn't see (or notice) this issue with CentOS6/Gnome2 This can easily be shown by running something like 'cpuburn' (https://patrickmn.com/projects/cpuburn/) and moving a mate-terminal window around the screen We can make things 'better' by running CPU intensive apps via 'nice' (without any noticeable performance hit to the CPU intensive app) - but this is a rather messy way of fixing the issue We can also make things better by renice'ing X to a negative nice level However, both these approaches seem wrong to me - as I'm probably missing something straightforward here Does anyone know of any CentOS7/Mate settings that could be used to improve desktop/UI responsiveness with high CPU usage ? hi guys I have a lxc guest on Dell's R815(AMD Opterons) which I just moved to an ecryptfs mounted folder(using centosplus' kernel) Copying data to that folder seems to work just fine, but I as soon as I start the quest the host gets shot in the head, hard reboot, no dump. I also have another, virtually identical guest but on Intel platform and that one does not do anything but runs okey. Any of you guys has experience such gross abnormality? many thanks, L.

Xfce vs. VirtualBox : font size problem

Hi, I'm running CentOS 7 with Xfce on my main workstation. I just installed VirtualBox, and the application is running nicely. The only problem is that VirtualBox fonts are too tiny. How can I make the application behave and use the system-wide font settings ? Increase Disk Space with LVM

Dear CentOS-Community, we have a server with four hard drives that are configured as raid10 (/dev/sda). Now, /home and /root are almost full. Therefore, we decided to buy four additional hard drives that should configured also as raid 10 (/dev/sdb). I want to use LVM to extend disk space for root and home. My (successful) test procedure in a virtual environment looks like this: 1. devide /dev/sdb into /dev/sdb1 for root and /dev/sdb2 for home using parted 2. Convert disk to physical volume: pvcreate /dev/sdb1 3. add physical volume to volume group (called centos): vgextend centos /dev/sdb1 4. Allocate physical volume to a logical volume:lvextend -l +100$FREE /dev/centos/root 5. resize2fs /dev/centos/root or xfs_grows /dev/centos/root depending on file system used 6. repeat steps 2-6 for /home and sdb2 The mentioned instruction I've got from this page: https://askubuntu.com/questions/458476/adding-disks-with-lvm#459176 Now my question: Is this procedure really safe or is something missing or are there some steps which I overlooked actually? Server disposal

Can anyone recommend a mailing list or other resource for finding a home for old server hardware? I've got a growing bone pile of retired Dell and Supermicro rack servers. I've stripped the drives and memory but hate to see the other old parts go to waste, like old RAID controllers and other proprietary parts.

Good evening from Singapore, I am torn between deploying Microsoft Exchange 2016 and Linux-based SMTP servers like sendmail, postfix, qmail and exim. Relative ease of installation and configuration is an important consideration factor. Microsoft Exchange 2016, Domain Controller, and Active Directory are relatively easy to install and configure. Linux-based SMTP servers are extremely difficult to install and configure and of course, extremely time-consuming. One of the features of Microsoft Exchange 2016 is that you can create additional folders on your Inbox in the server (server-side). Can Linux-based SMTP servers do that? Does Exchange 2016 offer more user-friendly features or Linux-based SMTP servers? Besides the above considerations, how about security? Traditionally, Linux is far more secure than Windows. Judging by security, Linux-based SMTP servers ought to have a higher percentage of the market share? Finally, I can only use Windows Server 2016 Standard Evaluation Copy FREE for a period of 3 years MAXIMUM. But I can use Linux servers and Mail Transport Agents (MTA) FREE perpetually. Please advise. Finding memory usage

I have a CentOS 7 server that is running out of memory and I can't figure out why. Running "free -h" gives me this: total used free shared buff/cache available Mem: 3.4G 2.4G 123M 5.9M 928M 626M Swap: 1.9G 294M 1.6G The problem is that I can't find 2.4G of usage. If I look at resident memory usage using "top", the top 5 processes are using a total of 390M. The next highest process is using 8M. For simplicity, if I assume the other 168 processes are all using 8M (which is WAY too high), that still only gives a total of 1.7G. The tmpfs filesystems are only using 18M, so that shouldn't be an issue. Yesterday, the available memory was down around 300M when I checked it. After checking some things and stopping all of the major processes, available memory was still low. I gave up and rebooted the machine, which brought available memory back up to 2.8G with everything running. How can I track what is using the memory when the usage doesn't show up in top? -- Bowie

C7, just updated firefox, bugs

I just updated the "critical" firefox update, and it is *seriously* buggy. 1. I killed my old session, and started a new. Many (all?) tabs show *nothing* until I put my cursor in the URL bar and hit <enter> 2. I cannot open a link in an email in thunderbird. I click the link, and after a bit (30 sec? more?) a small windows tells me that firefox is running, but not responding, which it certainly responds when I focus on firefox. mark

In some cases it becomes some kind of "undefined" or at least I'm not able to print it out in a report (in "r1:"). In the configuration file above I marked some lines with "BEGIN/END big shit". Between the BEGIN/END I commented out two lines. If I "run" with that configuration file I see the reports "r1:" and "r4:" but not "r2:" and "r3:". It's not clear to me why I don't see reports "r2:" and "r3:", but I'm interested in the value of $(info.info_list)" in "r1:", I only have "r2:" and "r3:" here to maybe help to localize the problem which is described later. I'm using that slist to collect some system info and then printing out the report and it would NOT be a problem if some system informations were missing but it IS a problem that in some cases the whole slist becomes undefined and in that situation I receive a completly empty report "r1: ". Is decoupling Apache + PHP into separate nodes possible?

<preamble> I have deployed Linux/Apache/PHP (node1) + MySQL (node2) with Security Groups (AWS) or iptables controlling who can connect to the MySQL server. In topology terms -- a 2 Tier architecture. In AWS - one can deploy several such instances behind a ELB. Each LAP instance talks to a MySQL RDS. The LAP instances are either mod_php or PHP-FPM. OS -- CentOS, Ubuntu. Debian </preamble> For one of my client's end user customer, their InfoSec team is asking if Apache and the PHP application can run in separate nodes (3 Tier arch). To the best of my knowledge Apache + PHP (mod_php) have to be in the same node. With PHP-FPM it is conceivable to have Apache talk to PHP-FPM running on a separate node (see diagram https://goo.gl/xTfbjg) But I have not done it myself and I am not sure if it is feasible. If it is feasible then what's the best practice to distribute the *.html *.css and *.php files between the Apache + the PHP-FPM nodes and how to achieve load balance between Apache and PHP-FPM nodes. I have searched but not found any reference setups. Would appreciate suggestions / references from anyone who has done a 3 Tier Apache + PHP + MySQL deployment in production. Try sending output from: postfix status mailq Try telnetting to your smtp server and sending a message like this from the local system: substitute a valid user/domain on the mail from line and a valid email address in your domain on the rcpt to line. SCLO: Clang 5 package

Hi, a new version of llvm toolset was released on RHEL including clang 5 several months ago: https://developers.redhat.com/blog/2018/05/03/announcing-ga-for-latest-soft… devtoolset 7.1 (gcc 7.3) was announced around the same time and has been in CentOS sclo repo for some time now, but still no sign of clang 5. Is this on anyone's to do list? llvm toolset contains a really convenient version of clang / clang-format, which I believe many developers are using daily for various tools. Clang 5 is required for C++17 support, so a prompt update would be highly appreciated. Sorry if this is not the correct mailing list. Best regards Tim

Mail has quit working

Hello, Mail has come to an abrupt stop. Running C7, postfix and dovecot. Using Roundcube as the client. Mail stopped working Saturday and I cannot figure was has happened. I have not touched this server except to upgrade packages. I believe Roundcube was updated maybe a week ago but know I was getting mail since then. Crond is no longer send mail. I checked /var/spool/mail as well as /Maildir in home directories. Zero byte files. Checked all logs and the only thing I could find was in /var/log/maillog : warning hostname localhost does not resolve to address 127.0.0.1 I corrected that by changing inet_interfaces to localhost from all in postfix.cf When I try to log in with Roundcube, it just times out. I'm stuck! TIA for any suggestions!!

FF60 does not allow download to ssh/davs

Hello All, this concerns fully updated Centos7 / Mate machines; I have people connect to ssh en davs locations. In /home/user/.gtk-bookmarks I put entries like ssh://192.168.1.8/data data-remote People can then click on the bookmark in the file manager and connect to it. Since FF60 people can no longer save files for instance from their mailbox to these "mounted" locations. Before, when choosing "save as", the mounted ssh location would appear in the download window. I guess this is not a bug but something one can disable/enable in about:config. Many thanks for any advise on this. greetings, J.

bad text under KDE and C7

I recently installed C7 from a C7+gnome CD. Gnome was awful enough that I promptly installed KDE. KDE is not doing so well either. Text in text editors invoked by "opening" a file is flakey at best. E.g. pieces disappear and duplicate. Terminals seem ok, including vim invoked from the terminal. Firefox text seems ok. The sidebar text in file-browser windows often has "black tape" over it, usually completely covering text. The file names are ok. Hi, I just migrated my workstation running CentOS 7 from KDE to MATE. It looks like I'm having the same problem with the Caja file manager than with Dolphin. Folder contents don't get refreshed automatically, and I have to hit F5. For example, when I download a file (say, a compressed archive) from the Internet, I have to hit F5 to see the file in Caja. And when I extract the archive, I have to hit F5 again. Anybody knows where this nagging problem comes from? Centos 7 - Canon Powershot A410

I have an old Canon Powershot A410 camera that used to just work with Centos 6. All I had to do was install Shotwell and forever after I could just plug that camera in and Shotwell would automatically load and all was well. I'm now trying to get that camera to work on Centos 7, but am having no success. Good evening from Singapore, Is there any way I can deploy cPanel web hosting control panel with Microsoft Exchange 2016 groupware behind one static public IP? Or do I need 2 static public IP addresses at the minimum? With Exchange 2016 groupware taking up HTTP, HTTPS, IMAP, IMAPS, POP3, POP3S, SMTP, and SMTP/S ports, I personally don't think I can deploy cPanel behind the same public IP as Exchange. Logwatch inconsistency

Hi all, In my logwatch config I clearly state only too report on Yesterday. The funny thing is that in the MailScanner section the number of mails scanned is different thant th number reported in the postfix section to be put on hold. Ik I grep the Requeue statements in the MailScanner logfile this is exactly the same number as the scan result of Hold in the postfix logfile and is equal to the number reported by logwatch in the MailScanner section. How come postfix reports a lot more being put on hold than the real number? There is at least some inconsistency in there. Firefox 60 crashes when trying to save an image

On any web page with an image, if i right-click on the image and select "Save Image As...", firefox crashes. Panic with EL7 KVM guest on EL6 host on AMD server with latest kernel

Hi, I have AMD servers running CentOS 6.10 as KVM host and on it guests running CentOS 7.5. Since the latest kernel update on CentOS 6.10, kernel-2.6.32-754.2.1.el6.x86_64, I can't boot the CentOS 7.5 guests with kernel-3.10.0-862.6.3.el7.x86_64 anymore. Reverting CentOS 6.10 host to kernel-2.6.32-754.el6.x86_64 fixes the problem. Screendump of the panic is attached, not very helpful I guess. The CPU models where I could test it are: cpu family : 15 model : 65 model name : Dual-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 2218 stepping : 3 cpu family : 16 model : 6 model name : AMD Athlon(tm) II Neo N36L Dual-Core Processor stepping : 3 Didn't test on newer CPU family yet. I'm wondering, does someone see the same issue? Does it not happen on Intel CPUs? Thanks for any insight. Regards, Simon

Clamd issues on Centos 6.10

Hello all, Been having an issue today that I can't seem to solve, so reaching out to others much more knowledgeable for help/advice/assistance. I ran the software update this morning and installed 134 packages, clamd was one of the packages. Upon completion of the update, I needed to reboot the box. I tried to locate the 'country code' paramater but gave that up after I got a headache looking over the documentation. I don't think its relevant to this issue anyway. I'm stuck on how to fix this. kvm & permission denied

Everyone, I am trying to install KVM on a desktop unit as a lab project with the hope of being able to use kvm on one of our office servers after I learn how. So far I am very low on the learning curve. I have used the guide to make the installation : https://www.linuxtechi.com/install-kvm-hypervisor-on-centos-7-and-rhel- 7/ The installation seemed to go well, but when I tried to add Fedora 27 with virt-manager I have continued to get file permission errors. I have tried turning selinux off, and making sure the directory permissions are 777 and the file permissions are 666, but have not been able to succeed. A google search demonstrates others have had this problem, and I have tried many of the fixes that have been recorded, but no success. ssm vs. lvm: moving physical drives and volume group to another system

I did the following test: ############################################### 1. Computer with Centos 7.5 installed on hard drive /dev/sda. Added two hard drives to the computer: /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc. Created a new logical volume in RAID-1 using RedHat System Storage Manager: ssm create --fstype xfs -r 1 /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /mnt/data Everything works. /dev/lvm_pool/lvol001 is mounted to /mnt/data. Files and folders can be copied/moved, read/written on /mnt/data. ############################################### 2. I erased CentOS 7.5 from /dev/sda. Wrote zeros to /dev/sda using dd. Reinstalled CentOS 7 on /dev/sda. Completed yum update - reboot - yum install system-storage-manager. Moving/copying/read/write -- works. ################################################### 3. Is it safe to assume when using RedHat System Storage Manager it's not necessary to use the lvm commands (vgexport and vgimport) to move two physical drives containing a logical volume in raid 1 from one computer to another? Centos 7 Not coming back from Sleep

Hi All im running centos 7 on my HP Probook 450. the problem im having is that when i put the Laptop to sleep (close the lid or press power button once) it goes to sleep fine. but to resume back, it cannot. it only lights up the keybord LED's to indicate PC is awake, but the screen will be blank. i have to force reboot ( long press of power button) for the laptop to come back up. what/were can i check to make sure it comes back from sleep nicely.

Hi All - I am running CentOS 7.5 and trying to use certbot. I am getting an error 403 forbidden on the /.well-known/acme-challenge/-CG_gSckofY5ln7TdMvoanDI1_FBRh8otQkyB0hxmoo Some searching indicated permission problems... I also noticed that the /var/www/html directory does not even have the .well-known directory in it. The /var/www/html directory was root:root I changed it to root:apache and still same error. ls -l /var/www/ total 0 drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 6 Jun 27 09:49 cgi-bin drwxr-xr-x. 6 root apache 214 Jun 27 09:49 html Anyone ran into this ? Does anyone know of a CentOS 6 compiled version of the widevine DRM plugin? Thanks for the idea, I'm not in a hurry and don't have a desire to hand-jam upstream versions of firefox onto desktops. I just need to track progress on the patch release and report an ETA to our cyber security team. I just figured CentOS had a fancy devops CI/CD system somewhere that I could keep tabs on to watch what's going on as patches get built, tested and published. Semi-OT: LSI raid card sorta....

I've got a box running C7, just updated (yesterday). It had an onboard RAID controller, and an HBA. I just installed a new, additional RAID card, all LSI. MegaCli64 only sees one controller. I can't seem to find the magic to see the others. I *know* the new card is a MegaRAID - the box it came in says so. The system sees it 1:00.0 RAID bus controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS1078 PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS (rev 04) 42:00.0 RAID bus controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic MegaRAID SAS-3 3108 [Invader] (rev 02) 43:00.0 Serial Attached SCSI controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS3008 PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS-3 (rev 02) I've connected a RAID box that we had to it. I'm trying to import the foreign configuration and bring it online. I really can't reboot the system for (literally) another month (the maintenance window); I saw the firmware interface, but for Reasons, couldn't do it then, and figured I'd be able to to it with MegaCli64, but so far, nope. -AdpAllinfo gets only one. Clues? mark

FYI: Useful to know on pdf printing

This is just an FYI, folks. We've got this large poster printer. We had some, er, environmental issues, let us say, and first I had to recreate the .ppd (HP "doesn't support printing from Linux, and the one a former coworker extracted from the Mac package... was for a 23", not this 44"). Then... I was trying to print from a 6.9 box. I hadn't rebuilt the box as C 7, because until the Incident, I'd been using acroread, so I was looking to see if something else would print correctly. Using evince in 6.9, 100% of the time, the printer's web page would tell me it was receiving, then the job would vanish, and the logs on the Linux side would tell me broken pipe. I did, however, print a test page from cups with no problem. So, yesterday, I updated to6.10, and then installed okular... and it printed perfectly, with no issues. Apparently, evince has some issue, either printing a .pdf, or there's something in my hacked .ppd that makes it gag, but okular is happy with. Just thought I'd let y'all know, so you could push it onto the stack, available if you run into this issue. mark

Solarflare SFC9000 direct connection

hi guys I wonder if any of you might be using SFN6122F-R7 SFP+ (SFC9000, same firmware everywhere, Centos 7.5 too. I'm trying poor man's setup to get the servers onto 10GbE network. Setup is such that three Dell R815 are connected to each other, each has one Solarflare(SFP ports) and each Solarflare is set as net-team(both ports on a card are net-team device) with runner in broadcast mode. And it all seems to work, they ping each other, iperf okey. The problem, big problem is that when traffic start to flow between all three servers simultaneously, with rsync for example, then!! one box gets shoot in the head, hard reset, gone. Every time same one box. Sure there are some bits that run on that one box that are not on the other two. Now, I know you would normally put it via a switch, but like I said: poor man's config, but you would not expect system to die like this neither, right? many thanks, L.

hi guys, shellinabox, do you use it? I in pretty vanilla setup get selinux denials and cannot login. Selinux says: #============= unconfined_service_t ============== #!!!! The file '/usr/bin/bash' is mislabeled on your system. #!!!! Fix with $ restorecon -R -v /usr/bin/bash allow unconfined_service_t unconfined_t:process transition; but that does not seem right to me, to allow such a transition, right? many thanks, L.

CentOS 7 + MATE : no sound in Firefox

Hi, I recently switched my main workstation running CentOS 7 from KDE to MATE. Migration went well, but now I have a couple issues. First things first. I have no sound in the Firefox browser. Applications like Audacious, VLC or MPlayer have sound, but Firefox is mute. Any idea how I can fix that? two 2-node clusters or one 4-node cluster?

Hello, I'm planning migration of current two clusters based on CentOS 6.x with Cman/Rgmanager going to CentOS 7.x and Corosync/Pacemaker. As the clusters and their services are on the same subnet, and there no particular security concerns differentiating them, I'm also evaluating the option to transform the two clusters into a unique 4-node one during the upgrade. Currently I'm testing a virtual 4-node CentOS 7.4 cluster inside oVirt 4.2 and things seem to behave well. Before going further in deep with tests and so on, I'd like to check with the community about how many CentOS 7.x clusters composed by more than two nodes are in place and what are the feedbacks on them in terms of incremented latency/communication, ecc scaling out. Also general feedback related to CentOS 6 and scalability of cluster nodes number is welcome. Thanks in advance, Gianluca

Redirect output from python script with systemd

Hi All, I am trying to build a command line with spaces in the argument. This demonstrates what I am trying to do. Clearly the first two commands work fine. However, the last 4 lines to not. /opt/libreoffice5.4/program/soffice.bin --headless --convert-to csv "/tmp/file.xlsx" /opt/libreoffice5.4/program/soffice.bin --headless --convert-to csv "/tmp/file 2.xlsx" MSG="file 2" MSG="csv \"$MSG\"" echo $MSG /opt/libreoffice5.4/program/soffice.bin --headless --convert-to $MSG I am trying to make a variable containing spaces which is MSG. Then add to that variable the argument csv. The "echo" above prints the write stuff. But when I try to use it in the last command its no longer valid and says Source file could not be loaded. What am I missing? much searching hinted to arrays and using \$ but I could not get that to work. Thanks. Jerry

weird slowdowns with recent CentOS 6 update

I just spent a while trying to debug some weird slowdown issues, and I thought I’d let the mailing list know in case it helps anyone else, or someone has a cleaner solution (or better ways of debugging the real issue). Just by way of context, we have a cluster using Infiniband and CentOS 6 (up to the latest patches as of a couple weeks ago, so 6.9+anything newer) and OpenMPI 3.1.0. Most of the nodes are "Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2670 0 @ 2.60GHz” or "Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2630 v3 @ 2.40GHz”, currently with kernel .6.32-696.30.1.el6.x86_64 Recently (I believe when we upgraded to that kernel, but not 100% sure that's really when it started), certain parallel floating-point-compute intensive jobs would sometimes (maybe 1 time in 20) run very slowly. The overall speed was reduced by about a factor of 2, but the slowdown appeared to be localized to specific routines, which would go from taking ~1s to ~50-100s. I first assumed it had to do with communication, but as I made the timing information more fine grained, it became clear that nearly trivial loops like DO I=1,GRIDC%RL%NP DWORK1(I,ISP)= REAL( DWORK(I,ISP) ,KIND=q) ENDDO were a large part of the problem. The only thing I could find after poking around that was at all odd is that when this happened, khugepaged would be taking 100% of cpu for tens of seconds on the affected nodes. It appears, although it’s not completely certain yet (since the problem appears rarely enough to that it’s hard to definitively rule out), that disabling THP by putting “never” in /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/enabled and /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/defrag fixes the problem. I guess I am also still wondering what exactly khugepaged does, and what kind of problems I should worry about because I disabled it. The documentation I’ve found for it doesn’t really explain what the transparent huge pages are good for. Noam

They both (C6 and C7 versions) require many non OS tools to build. For CentOS-7 .. we need the rust-toolset, llvm-toolset, and devtoolset-7, to get the firefox to build. For CentOS-6, we need less items (no llvm-toolset required .. all the rest is required). But, there is no released source code for the EL6 version of rust-devtoolset upstream. I am working on this now .. but we had the 6.10 release and the also 32 other items that dropped for CentOS-7 (both of which are now done). gpg2 (GnuPG) Security Update for CentOS 6.10

Where do I get an update for gpg2 (GnuPG) for CentOS 6.10 that is compliant with CVE-2018-12020? I'm trying to update gpg2 (GnuPG GNU Privacy Guard) on my fully updated CentOS 6.10 computer to comply with CVE-2018-12020. My system has gpg2 package gnupg2-2.0.14-8.el6.x86_64.rpm This package does not appear to be compliant with CVE-2018-12020. I can not find and update anywhere. I have tried downloading the upstream version 2.2.8 from GnuPG.org but am having trouble building it for CentOS 6.10 primarily due to a requirement for a newer version of glibc. I'm getting the error undefined reference to 'clock_gettime' and have not been able to resolve it Any suggestions on where to download the update or when an update might be available or how to build gpg2 version 2.2.8 for CentOS 6 is appreciated. Samba issues with Win 10

Hi, folks, Just ran into a problem: someone with a new laptop, running Win 10, version 1709, tried to map their home directory (served from a CentOS 6.9 box, and it fails, with Windows complaining that it no longer supports SMBv1, and if you go to their site, you can install support for that manually.... The server running samba can *not* be updated to 7 - we have a lot of stuff based off it, and most of our users use it, one way or another, so it's a major thing when we do finally upgrade (or, more likely, replace the server). Has anyone run into this, and if so, any workarounds on the Linux end? mark

usb problem on Dell Latitude 3570

ZFS on Linux repository

Hi list, we all know why ZFS is not included in RHEL/CentOS distributions: its CDDL license is/seems not compatible with GPL license. I'm not a layer, and I do not have any strong opinion on the matter. However, as a sysadmin, I found ZFS to be extremely useful, especially considering BTRFS sad state. I would *really* love to have ZFS on Linux more intergrated with current CentOS. From what I know (and I can go wrong, obviously), while the incompatible licenses prevent CentOS from shipping it, nothing should prevent to have a package for enabling *its repository*, better yet the kmod-enabled one. I was thiking to something as a ZFS SIG, where we can simply issue "yum install zfs-sig" and have the correct kmod-enabled repository enabled. I searched the list but I did not found anything regarding native ZFS. Any feedback on the matter is welcomed. Folowing setup: 4x HD 500TB 1st: /boot 4GB, remaining part LVM 2nd, 3rd, 4th all LVM LVM volumes: - 30G /root - 8G /var - 8G /tmp - 200G /var/log/pgsql - 800G /var/spacewalk - 4G swap System boots into emergency mode because it does not find any of the logical volumes defined, because it does not enable the LVM volume group. Giving "lvm", then "vgchange -a y", followed by CTRL-D continues to boot to full multiuser mode. How can I make the system to enable the volume group and automatically boot to full multiuser mode? Looks there is something broken at some point and ths system does not enable the volume group. Any idea? -- Thomas

Centos 7.5 on Vmware

Everyone, I am in the initial study phase of putting together a larger virtual server while using Centos 7.5 as the operating system of choice for the individual virtual machines. cron.daily and others, not running

Hello there, I've just noticed that scripts in /etc/cron.{daily,weekly,...} are not launched for several weeks (I noticed a `locate` not finding a recently added binary). CentOS7/Mate Qt bugs/features?

We have recently migrated from CentOS6/Gnome to CentOS7/Mate - and have noticed 'glitches' with some Qt applications that appears to be linked to the 'org.mate.Marco.general' 'compositing-manager' setting - and wondered how we 'fix' the issue ... Below is a PyQT4 python script that shows the issues: 1. With 'compositing-manager' set to 'true' (I believe the default setting): gsettings set org.mate.Marco.general compositing-manager true Running the script and the window background is transparent - which is fine However, if the pull down menu is selected and the 'Toggle' button pressed, the menu stays on the screen - and stays put even if the window is moved 2. With 'compositing-manager' set to 'false' : gsettings set org.mate.Marco.general compositing-manager false Running the script and the window background is no longer transparent - which is not good, but the pull down menu issue is fine ... We're using Nvidia cards with the Nvidia drivers - but I can also reproduce the issue on a Vmware player instance It would be good to know if anyone else can reproduce this with Mate ? Using CentOS7/Gnome3 works as expected (transparent background and pull down menu is fine) Anyone have any idea what the problem(s) might be and how to fix it/them ? C++11 and GCC 5+

This may be common knowledge to some, but it was new to me. Libraries that use C++11 and are compiled with GCC 4.8.x that CentOS 7.x has are NOT binary compatible with GCC 5.x or newer. It seems to only effect C++11. What you have to do - create /opt/gcc55 (or whatever) Rebuild any libraries that use C++11 that you need in something compiled with GCC 5+ and install them within that prefix. Then point to them in that prefix when building what you need to build. -=- The Linux runtime linker seems to get it right (as long as you have /opt/gcc55/lib64 in path) and not load wrong version of library, so you don't need to use rpath. But you do need to have a version of the dependency compiled with the GCC you want available at both compile time and runtime. -=- I ran across this issue when building Audacity 2.2.2 - which does not build with GCC 4.8.5. The problem libraries: * flac * vamp-sjdk-plugin * wxGTK3 All three of those use C++11 and therefore needed to be rebuilt with GCC 5.5.0 (what I used for building Audacity) Just thought I'd pass it along.

dhcpd.conf for balance-rr bonding

Hi, I am trying to configure linux bonding using balance-rr configuration. I could not find a way to configure dhcpd.conf for this purpose and failed miserably when I tried the following (dhcpd just failed): host servername { hardware ethernet [mac address interface #1] ; hardware ethernet [mac address interface #2] ; fixed-address 10.0.10.6; } In my understanding balance-rr would be issued a single IP address but using 2 mac addresses in round-robin mechanism. If this is true, how do I configure DHCPD to issue single IP address to 2 different MAC? Sincerely, Nurdiyana Ali.
