moving from centos 8 to stream? (and possibly back again?)

just installed stock centos 8 x86_64 and did "dnf update", now reading up on centos stream, and wondering: 1) can i, at any time, decide to convert this system to centos stream, notwithstanding any normal updates i've done in the meantime? 2) if i'm running centos stream and decide it's just too progressive for me, can i dial it back to "regular" centos down the road? rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. Centos 8 hardware compatibility testing?

With Centos 7 and earlier I've been using the Live CD image to test new hardware (laptops etc) for compatibility. That way I can get a desktop up and try the sound and the networking and whatnot without affecting what is already installed on the machine, and then if everything looks good I can just run the installer right from the Live CD image. There's no Live CD image for Centos 8, so what would be a good way to accomplish the task of testing new hardware with Centos 8 before attempting to install the operating system? -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ www.melvilletheatre.com

Stream not installing centos-release-stream

It looks like anaconda isn't installing centos-release-stream when you install CentOS 8 Stream. I just did a minimal install through PXE and it pulled everything from the 8-stream repository and installed the stream versions, but didn't install centos-release-stream. (Below is the output of yum list \*release\* immediately after install.) This means that it will not get updates from stream. C8 regression / tmp on tmpfs

Does someone have a working tmp on tmpfs via systemctl enable tmp.mount under CentOS8/RHEL8? This seems to work straight in EL7 ... # LANG=C systemctl enable tmp.mount The unit files have no installation config (WantedBy, RequiredBy, Also, Alias settings in the [Install] section, and DefaultInstance for template units). This means they are not meant to be enabled using systemctl. Possible reasons for having this kind of units are: 1) A unit may be statically enabled by being symlinked from another unit's .wants/ or .requires/ directory. 2) A unit's purpose may be to act as a helper for some other unit which has a requirement dependency on it. 3) A unit may be started when needed via activation (socket, path, timer, D-Bus, udev, scripted systemctl call, ...). 4) In case of template units, the unit is meant to be enabled with some instance name specified. -- Leon

Migrating users to new server

An age-old problem and there are some simple awk/grep-based scripts to handle the easy cases. Are there any more sophisticated tools that can extract all non-system users and groups and then merge the result into the password/group/shadow/gshadow files of a new server? I don't need home directories or mbox inboxes created because I'll rsync those over once I've created the users. Tricky problems include merging entries for existing users and groups, and renumbering if one is moving from a 500-based system to a 1000-based system. Failure to install boot loader on Dell PowerEdge R720xd

What command does the installer use to install the boot loader? I sucessfully installed CentOS 8 to the server, with /usr on a mirrored SSD pair on the RAID controller and /boot on the internal SD card (where Dell wants one to boot from). Before rebooting, I inspected the installation at /mnt/sysimage and the disk usage looked reasonable. I saw a grub directory in /boot but no second stage boot loader nor any config files for it. At the end of the process, I got an error message that the installer failed to install the boot loader and the resulting system wouldn't boot. It didn't. There were no details useful for diagnosis. So now I'm about to boot the installer DVD into rescue mode to manually install the boot loader and see the real error message. So what command do I issue?

how to reinit an own repo after adding files?

Hallo, I try to use my own repo. The problem: The repo is working when using it while installing a fresh system using pxe and kickstart. When changing the content and rebuilding the repo new packages are not found. My question: What is the right way to reinit a repo complete? Manual partitioning and LVM

I can't seem to figure out how to partition for install. I've tried both CentOS 8 and 7.7 netinstalls. I've got 3 disks: sda (big hardware RAID array), sdb (SSD), and sdc (internal SD card for booting). I want to put /boot on sdc, /usr on sdb, and / on sda. I don't care what format is used on sdb and sdc, whatever will let it boot. I want LVM on sda so that I can use snapshotting for backups. I can pre-format sdb1 and sdc1 as ext4 usinga gparted live DVD. If I select manual partitioning, I can then label and assign those two to /usr and /boot. I can see sda in the drives available on the first detination screen but but I don't see it in the manual partitioning screen. So I don't see how to partition and format it as an LVM volume that I can mount to /.
