MATE 1.20 test build for CentOS 7 available

Hi everyone, There's been discussions in the past about updating MATE RPMs in EPEL-7: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1436260 https://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2019-August/173154.html (and lots of others...) As a proof-of-concept, I've written some scripts that clone specific commits from the Fedora master branches, and then runs a tool to re-apply RPM scriptlets that are required by EL7 but removed from the Fedora .spec files. The scripts are available at: https://github.com/gebailey/mate-rpms/tree/master/1.20/el7 There's also instructions there if you want to try upgrading to MATE 1.20 w/o rebuilding them yourself. If these packages work for others, perhaps we can revisit the idea of updating the epel7 branches of the Fedora git repos and submitting an official update. There's nothing here (yet) about building MATE 1.22 (which might require a newer gcc for EL7), or building anything on CentOS 8, but thought the CentOS 7 users might find this helpful. -Greg

Brother HL-L2360DW printing quality

I have the above printer but have not been able to resolve issues with the printing quality in CentOS 7. The test page prints fine but when I print PDF-documents, most recently using Chinese fonts, it is lacking and the pages very hard to read. The settings in the Mate Cups configuration panel are fine and set to 600 dpi, the settings in the printer menu are all OK yet it prints more like maybe 150 or even 75 dpi. Any suggestion what might be wrong?

CentOS 7 kickstart repo directive

Is the kickstart repo directive broken under CentOS 7? Every attempt with a repo directive in the kickstart file fails during the software selection step. Removing the repo directives and the packages from those repos under %packages makes it work. On console 2, I have verified that the (NFS) repos specified in the kickstart file are mounted and that the repo metadata has been copied over to /tmp/yum.cache. One of the packages from one of the repos that is explicitly listed under the %packages section appears in packaging.log for dependency checking. The custom repos work fine with yum on a running machine, so there is no problem with the metadata. Logging is poor and does not log what is actually wrong.

CentOS 7.6 1810 vs. VirtualBox : bug with keyboard layout selection

Hi, I'm currently working on my next Linux book, which will be an elementary course about CentOS administration. I'm using VirtualBox for all the installer screenshots. Since CentOS has recently been upgraded to version 7.6, I thought I might as well base all book references on this version. So I downloaded the 7.6 1810 minimal ISO and started a fresh installation in VirtualBox. I'm using a Swiss French keyboard layout (ch-fr or fr_CH-latin1), so one of the first things I do in the installer is replace the default French AZERTY keyboard (since I use the french language) by a swiss french QWERTZ layout. Now when I reach this dialog in the installer and try do define my new layout, the slider in the selection window doesn't appear, and clicking on any of the first layouts doesn't do anything, so I'm basically stuck there. I'm running OpenSUSE Leap 15.0 KDE on my workstation, so I tried the same thing with the previous CentOS 7.5 1804 minimal ISO, and the keyboard selection dialog works perfectly. So my intuition would tell me that there's a nasty bug in the CentOS 7.6 installer. Maybe it went unnoticed, since most folks stick to the default keyboard layout selected in their language. Any suggestions ? Problem with disconnecting SSH-sessions

I am running CentOS 7 on a workstation and CentOS 6 and 7 on a couple of servers I am remotely connecting to using the same username and thus ssh configuration. However, one of the servers running CentOS 6 I keep getting disconnected from whereas I have no such problems with another CentOS 6 server and CentOS 7 server. The latter two are on two different hosted server setups far, far away whereas the problematic one is my own physical hardware in the same building. I have tried to make sure the sshd configuration on all servers are identical but still have this problem. I can rule out a general problem with the router in my office since all connections are via that router, the only difference is that the problematic server is in the same building and the connection loops back via the same router but through an external IP address. /var/log/secure on the workstation offers no clues with no messages regarding any disconnection. If anyone has suggestions what I should check, it would be greatly appreciated!

gcc 8/9 on CentOS 7

I am looking to make use of gcc 8/9 on CentOS 7, which is currently with gcc 4.8.5. How do I go about doing this? SCL repository provides the same as part of devtoolset8, but devtoolset8 libstdc++-devel i686 package is missing, without which I can not build 32 bit applications. Are there any repository sources from where I can get this? Otherwise, I am open to building the packages from sources. Please let me know how can one go about this. Any suggestions and pointers appreciated.

Hi all, sadly there is no epel tomcat package so far. As per https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1745960 there is no progress for three months. Is there any other third party repository which builds tomcat for centos/rhel 8? Thx Rainer

Nasty Fail2Ban update for Centos 7

Hi all... Recently a new Fail2Ban was available among some other updates for my Centos 7 system, and I just updated all. It seems that was a very BAD idea. Just noticed that Fail2Ban have generated a 6MB error log because of the update, and FirewallD a 1MB log of errors ! (not sure if any of those were really working after this) ok, I'll just run yum downgrade fail2ban I thought. Naa, no way back - Epel doesn't have a fallback option ! Then gotta dig into Koji, to find the old version, download it, and downgrade to that - and pew, everything is back to normal. The old one seems to be version 0.9.7 and the new one is 0.10.4 I haven't had time to look into Fail2Bans info about these 2 version, but since there is a major version change - is it really possible to just upgrade these ? Sure, I would love to have a working 0.10.4 for my Centos 7 - but it shouldn't destroy my existing system - or it should at least warn me about that - or what to fix. Allan.

CentOS 7 as a Fibre Channel SAN Target

For quite some time I’ve been using FreeNAS to provide services as a NAS over ethernet and SAN over Fibre Channel to CentOS 7 servers each using their own export, not sharing the same one. It’s time for me to replace my hardware and I have a new R720XD that I’d like to use in the same capacity but configure CentOS 7 as a Fibre Channel target rather than use FreeNAS any further. I’m doing virtualization and this will allow me to have failover from one node to the other since they’ll all be sharing the same export rather than me simply backing up to the FreeNAS server the way I am now. Does anyone know of any really good current articles that explain how to set up CentOS 7 as the target in such a configuration and also setting up CLVMd so they can all share an export over Fibre Channel from CentOS 7? Has anyone gotten lapack to work on centos 7? If so, how? Most recently, I installed lapace-devel and let yum bring in what it wanted. Whenever I try to link, I get a long list of undefined references ending with /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-redhat-linux/4.8.5/../../../../lib64/liblapacke.so: undefined reference to `dgeevx_' [hennebry@localhost test]$ nm -D /usr/lib64/libblas.so | grep dge 0000000000018850 T dgemm_ 0000000000011080 T dgemv_ 00000000000170c0 T dger_ [hennebry@localhost test]$ confirmes that the reference is not there. Installing blas or atlas first does not help. When installing lapack-devel, yum always wants to install blas-devel. cannot install Centos 8 Stream

I want to install Centos Stream on an older server. the Areca ARC-1680 RAID Controller is not supported anymore, so I tried to install on an external USB drive. i did a manual partitioning: sdc1 /boot/efi efi system partition sdc2 /boot ext4 sdc3 / lvm and the system cannot boot - hangs forever. new try: sdc1 /boot/efi, efi system partition sdc2 / xfs at end of install i see 'bootloader install failed'. debug shows 'NOTICE root:83haiku: debug: /dev/sdc1 is not a beFS partiotion: exiting' then i did an automatic partitioning and got no efi partition. and the system cannot boot - hangs forever. HOW do i install centos stream on external usb disk with efi boot?

looking for rpms in CentOS 8

Hi, I can't find 3 rpms (for now, maybe more later) in centos 8, which are available for centos 7 and 6. perl-Crypt-SSLeay perl-Data-Validate-IP ndisc6 Any ideas why these aren't in the repos yet? Does Centos kernel support usb w/ UASP ?

Looking to buy a new usb-attached RAID box for nightly backups, and I see that many of them now support usb 3.1 with UASP. Looking at add-in usb 3.1 cards (my motherboard is probably too old, and only supports usb 3.0) to go with it, but don't know if the old kernel RH/Centos uses supports UASP. Chipset dependent? If one can trust the product images on Amazon, most of them use an asmedia 2142 chip. Anyone know? Thanks in advance! Install Questions

This is my situation: I've a AMD Phenom II X6 1055T machine with 2 - ISA DVD drives and 6 - SATA Drives. The drives are (I assume by the BIOS) assigned /dev/ sda through /dev/sdf. In order to do a specific definition easily I use CentOS 6 (what disks are used with RAID-1 and which ones are used with RAID-10) and what the /dev/mdx names to use. What I don't understand is why when I get to the page where I'm to install the boot loader it wants to install it on /dev/sdf. When I try to install it on /dev/md0 (where /boot is located) the reboot fails. When I try to alter the BIOS order (it allows me to do this with 4 of the 6 disks) so the /dev/sda is the first BIOS drive the also fails. Before I had multiple disks in a RAID environment I could install the boot loader on /dev/sda1 without problems (BTW, /dev/md0 is defined with /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdd1). What am I doing wrong and how can I make it better? BTW, My goal is to get the file system defined exactly like I want it and then install CentOS 7.5 (CentOS 7.7 gives me several warning messages concerning my processor). Centos 8 KVM and Win10 time

I didn't have this issue when using Centos 7 but for some reason now using 8 I have a windows 10 vm that keeps changing it's time to UTC. Centos appears to be using local time but something is telling it to change time. I have time sync running in windows and it syncs but then at some point when I come back to it the time has changed. Tried a bunch of things but so far no luck, anyone have any suggestions that I could try please let me know, thanks.

The case of the missing /boot/grub2/grub.cfg in centos8

So I installed centos8. And I was looking for the grub config file: [root@testbox ~]# ls -l /etc/grub2.cfg lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 22 Oct 2 13:01 /etc/grub2.cfg -> ../boot/grub2/grub.cfg [root@testbox ~]# But [root@testbox ~]# ls /boot/grub2/ grubenv [root@testbox ~]# Why is it not there? FYI, I did try 'yum reinstall grub2' and no /boot/grub2/grub.cfg for me.

Disabling TLS 1.1 in Centos 7 cockpit

Hi, I'm using cockpit in standard port 9090 in a Centos 7 system. Due to a suggestion from management, they want TLS 1.1 disabled system-wide in all Linux boxes and TLS 1.2 enabled. I have not found proper documentation on how to disable it for cockpit (version 195.1 ships with Centos 7) So far I have tried (https://cockpit-project.org/guide/149/https.html): /usr/lib/systemd/system/cockpit.service [Service] Environment=G_TLS_GNUTLS_PRIORITY=-VERS-ALL:+VERS-TLS1.2 And I also created the file /etc/systemd/system/cockpit.service.d/ssl.conf and added: [Service] Environment=G_TLS_GNUTLS_PRIORITY=-VERS-ALL:+VERS-TLS1.2 after that, I systemctl restart cockpit But if I do #openssl s_client -connect localhost:9090 -tls1_1 I get a proper response (a certificate), so TLS 1.1 is being accepted. nfs causes Centos 7.7 system to hang

Hello, MERRY CHRISTMAS to all in list! After I upgraded to latest: CentOS Linux release 7.7.1908 (Core) I am facing nfs crashes which cause the system to hang frequently. This is caused by cp to nfs-mounted shares. Below is dmesg output; you will see call traces. State of CentOS 8

Hi, I have been a happy user of CentOS 7 in the past. I am now considering switching to CentOS 8. However, since end of Oct. 2019, I have not received any updates on my CentOS 8 test installations. Since then, RHEL 8 has published several critical security updates. Obviously, this make the use of CentOS 8 in production dangerous. I guess the missing updates have to to with RHEL version 8.1, which is not yet available for CentOS. Basically, I would like to ask how the CentOS team sees the state of CentOS 8. Is the current version only intended for testing/evaluation? When does the CentOS team consider CentOS ready for production use? Is there any public documentation on this matter? Hi, I'm currently fiddling with Nginx to get acquainted with its various quirks and idiosyncrasies. I have a public CentOS 7 sandbox server, and I've tried various setups. Install the binary from EPEL, install various binaries from SCLo, build from source. I wonder which version is recommended for production use on CentOS 7. Any suggestions? Hello, I am trying to build a PXE boot image for CentOS 7. livemedia-creator --make-pxe-live --ks=ks --no-virt It runs the entire process and then it says: losetup: /dev/: detach failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device 2019-12-26 11:49:47,293: Disk Image install successful 2019-12-26 11:49:47,293: working dir is /var/tmp/tmpKwqC77 mount: /dev/loop0 is write-protected, mounting read-only mount: unknown filesystem type '(null)' 2019-12-26 11:49:52,301: Command '['mount', '-o', 'loop', '/var/tmp/diskJVpsJd.img', '/var/tmp/lorax.imgutils.OtV8Yh']' returned non-zero exit status 32 I then tried it on CentOS 8 and had the same problem until I installed the dracut-live package but that package doesn't exist on CentOS 7. I will point out that it seems to work fine with make-iso, just not make-pxe-live. So there is probably a package it needs that I don't know about. Has anyone gotten this to work at all? Problems installing CentOS 8

I'm having a problem installing CentOS 8 from a USB drive. When the installer boots from the USB, it displays the language selection screen. After I select English and continue, the installer freezes. The USB drive flashes a couple times over the next minute or so, the stops. The mouse moves the cursor, but the installer is unresponsive to either selecting QUIT or HELP. I've tried both the default and the basic graphic install with the same results. Hello, this update freshly announced (not available since days, like 2 weeks) seemed to completely break my CentOS 7 system running on a Dell Precision 7530. when I applied it days ago. Once the new microcode has been applied during the yum update transaction, with other updates like nss, system suddently froze, and no way to reboot. I could boot from a flashdrive and give a look at the boot logs, determine that lots of updated files where 0-byte length on the xfs root partition - and since the nss update was part of the yum update, nothing could boot at all, nss comes w/ libraries that are quite low-level, mostly network-related. I identified the broken files, the broken packages, downloaded them from repositories and unpacked them manually, in order to boot. Once I could boot the system, I reverted the broken yum transaction, re-installed the updates et voila. Since then, I live with a exclude=microcode_ctl-2.1-53.7.el7_7.x86_64 in CentOS-Base.repo file and wonder if I'll give the next update a try.. or not! All, I need to run some legacy Windows software (32 bits) under my Linux box. I have installed wine from the source the 64 bits works fine but not the 32 bits. Using Pulse Audio--question

Hi all! This seems to me as if it should be a trivial thing to do, but so far I've wasted a lot of time on it and gotten nowhere: I want to feed audio from a source (ipod, other player) into the audio input on my C7 box via either the phone jack or an external USB sound "card" I have, then I want to play it via the speakers connected to the system. I can find no way to do it with pavucontrol, nor the default mate sound tool. Using pavucontrol and the external USB sound "card" (quote marks because it obviously isn't a "card") I can see the input coming in, but I can't figure any way to send it back out to any output device. I'm not wedded to using pulse for this, I'll use alsa or whatever else can be beaten into submission, I just can't understand why this isn't a normal usage, and why it wouldn't be easy to do. All (on topic) advice gladly received. Thanks in advance! Hi Philippe, To get wine-32 to work on CentOS 7.6 I had to build and install wine 1.8.4 from a tarball. Follow the instructions at: https://wiki.winehq.org/Building_Wine and build the 64-bit version first, then the 32-bit version. Before building either version I installed the following X11 devel pkgs from yum: libX11-devel.i686 libxcb-devel.i686 libXext-devel.i686 Depending on your setup on CentOS8 you may need additional X11 devel pkgs, or gecko or others. Hi, I've been regularly using the Yum Priorities plugin for the last decade or so. Apparently it has been obsoleted with CentOS 8. I've googled around for replacements, and there is some conflicting or otherwise misleading information about it. I'm aware the late Yum developer Seth Vidal had a bad opinion of priorities. This being said, I like the idea of third party repositories not messing with the official stuff. Any suggestions ? Hi, I'm currently fiddling with CentOS 8.0 on a sandbox server in order to get acquainted with its various quirks and idiosyncrasies. Here's the first curious detail I noticed. I used the CentOS installer in french (since I live in France), but I like my server systems to default to english. (If you've ever read one of these funny "frengrish" SELinux alerts, you'll understand why. Anyway.) After the installation, I ran this: # localectl set-locale LANG=en_US.UTF8 So here's what I have actually on my minimal system: $ localectl System Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF8 VC Keymap: ch-fr X11 Layout: ch X11 Variant: fr But my initial user still has system messages in french, so I added this to his ~/.bashrc: # LANG LANG=en_US.UTF8 export LANG I logged out and logged back in and tried the 'yum check-update' command, which normally doesn't require root privileges. And here's what I get: $ yum check-update Failed to set locale, defaulting to C Last metadata expiration check: 0:17:42 ago on Mon Dec 16 14:04:39 2019. Any idea on how to make Yum behave here? pdftotext latest version for CentOS 7

I have pdftotext 0.26.5, the current version for CentOS 7 and the Mate desktop as far as I can ascertain. The page https://www.xpdfreader.com/pdftotext-man.html seems to suggest that the latest version is 4.02 which seems a gigantic leap ahead. Since I have a Chinese text PDF which I am unable to extract any text from using pdftotext, instead I end up with a collection of garbage Latin characters, I am curious how to get a later version? Copying and pasting from Atril 1.16.1 (seems to be part of the Mate desktop I am running) also makes me end up with garbage... Not surprising since it also seems to use pdftotext 0.26.5... Any suggestions? Later version of pdftotext? If so, wherefrom? Another PDF-viewer?

log4j12 package in CentOS 8

According to the RHEL docs, package log4j was replaced with package log4j12 in RHEL 8.0. However, when I attempt to install the package in CentOS 8, dnf cannot find it. I have the Base, AppStream, Extras and PowerTools repos enabled. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

Wonky Firefox 68.0.1esr upgrade

I just applied a bunch of updates to my CentOS 7 system yesterday, one of which was a Firefox update to 68.0.1esr. Now when I bring up sites I would log in to -- my bank, credit cards, etc., the Password box is wonky and shakes and doesn't display successive dots for characters I type, nor does it accept what I type. My work around currently is to type the password first, then my userid but ???!!!!! Using either a <tab> to get to the Password box or just a click in the Password box causes the same results. DebugInfo repo broken on purpose

This line in /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Debuginfo.repo baseurl=http://debuginfo.centos.org/$releasever/$basearch/ …causes commands like “yum search --enablerepo=* foo” to fail with the obscure error Error: Failed to synchronize cache for repo 'base-debuginfo' Apparently this is because the debug info RPMs aren’t hosted there any more, per the page at the top of the site. However, when I edit that file to point to the Facebook mirror linked from the top of the debuginfo.centos.org site, I get the same error, even after assorted remediations: dnf makecache, dnf update, etc. Any ideas on how to fix it, hopefully in a way that lands in a CentOS 8.next, so it doesn’t have to be fixed manually? And in the meantime, is there a short syntax for “search all repos other than the debuginfo ones”? I could list every repo in a comma-separated list, but ugh.

All, I use a code which has a python (I use python36) wrapper loading shared libraries. The code worked fine in RHEL 7 but as I was testing it on Centos 8, python cannot import the shared library (the import is done via dlopen with flags set as > sys.setdlopenflags(os.RTLD_LAZY | os.RTLD_GLOBAL) python then does a bunch of imports and most results in a shared library with indefined symbols. Somthing like: > from .w3dpy import * > ImportError: > /usr/local/lib64/python3.6/site-packages/warp/w3dpy.cpython-36m-x86_64-linux-gnu.so: undefined symbol: multigridxyf2_ The codes works fine on Scientific Linux 7 but had the same problem as above on fedora 31. I suspect something changed in the way dlopen is handled on newer linux version but cannot figure out how the code should be modified... Thank you for any help. All the best, -- Philippe.

CentOS 7 Plus Kernel Update Missing?

Along with the recent kernel update (3.10.0-1062.9.1.el7), the CentOS 7 plus kernel was likewise updated. The plus kernel though hasn't shown up in the mirrors yet, while the plain kernel has. Could someone please push the release button for the plus kernel? What I do see in the various random mirrors I've manually checked is the previous plus kernel (kernel-plus-3.10.0-1062.7.1.el7.centos.plus.rpm) shows a release date of 12-6 instead of 12-3 it had a few days ago. CentOS-8: firewalld not starting

Hello all-- It seems using ctrl-alt-F1 to exit from GUI back to MY OWN SESSION'S command line does not work for me. It does nothing. Is this something that needs to be explicitly enabled? I start GUI using "startx". Also, any info on what to use to get BACK to my X11 session. Discussions seem confusing on this point. PHP handler for .html files - C7

Morning all, I am finally moving some old (F9 thru F17) servers to C7 (Plus PHP7/Pgsql10) boxes. On the old boxes they all had it set so that .htm and .html files were handled by PHP in addition to the normal .php files. This was done with the simple change to: AddHandler php5-script .php .htm .html AddType text/html .php .htm .html in /etc/httpd/conf.d/php.inc. I did the same on my first new server but found that this did not work, and the login.html did not get handled. How to fix keymap error in centOS 8

Hi, I.m using centOS 8 in Compaq Pressario V3737TU which is using touchpad. Everytime i pushed touchpad on/off button, i saw an error in messages log, although the button is functioning well, it switch on and off the touchpad. kernel: atkbd serio0: Unknown key pressed (translated set 2, code 0xd8 on isa0060/serio0). kernel: atkbd serio0: Use 'setkeycodes e058 <keycode>' to make it known. I had tried to enter the following commands in command line but did nothing, #setkeycodes e058 0xd8 #setkeycodes e059 0xd9 How can i fix this issue? Best regards.

Roundcube does not show emails

Hi, I installed Roundcube 1.4.1 on a sandbox server running CentOS 7, Postfix and Dovecot, with half a dozen test email accounts. Mail is setup correctly under the hood, e. g. I can access any account via Thunderbird for sending and receiving mail. And SELinux is set to permissive until everything works correctly. I took some notes (in french) on the installation procedure under CentOS : * https://github.com/kikinovak/HOWTOs/blob/master/Roundcube-HOWTO.txt All tests in the installer (including SMTP and IMAP login) are OK. But still, when I login to an account, no emails are showing. The inbox shows up empty, even if it's not. Another malfunction is that I cannot edit any identity. When I click on the user's identity, I get a spinning wheel, and the page does not open. I already have Roundcube 1.4rc1 running on my main workhorse server, it runs nicely. I tried to figure out what I did differently on that machine, but couldn't figure it out so far. I took a peek in the various log files, but found nothing suspect. Or maybe I don't know what to look for. Any suggestions? I'm a bit clueless here and don't even know where to start. Updating firefox after a long time yum-excluded it and having installed it from .rpm

Hello, I've been stuck for a while with an old version of firefox, installed from local .rpm (I know.. I should have downgraded using yum, instead) and added a exclude=firefox to the relevant .repo file. I did that after a yum-update has brought firefox 52+, and all add-ons were deprecated because of their new add-on scheme. Today that all the add-ons I need are available, I've tried upgrading to the latest Firefox version available from the updates repo.. I removed the exclude line in .repo file, but `yum update` didn't bring any firefox version at all: "No packages marked for update". I've struggled a bit, no way to get firefox installed using yum. Hello list. I have already install winserver 2019 on centos 7 qemu and works fine. Now I install a second image with win 2019 and It connects to internet but I cant ping it or connect to it. Both installations use the same br0. Is that correct? Any other suggestions? Thank you. Nikos.

Failed to load SELinux policy- freezing

This is annoying! I have a CentOS7 virtual machine running on VirtualBox. Short version: At boot the system locks with a message: "Failed to load SELinux policy, freezing." VirtualBox thinks it is still running, and I can see it consuming a small amount of CPU time. But it never goes past this message. The problem actually started with a problem in the sound system on this virtual machine. It would boot a ways through, then abort with no warning and no message. It just went away. Looking at the VirtualBox log file, I saw that the last line in the file was something about failing to initialize a stream associated with PulseAudio. In VirtualBox settings for the machine I disabled all audio. It then booted. I was in the process of gathering information for a problem report at VB when it started giving the message about SELinux policy. There were several aborts including one where it almost got to loading the X server and going graphical. SELinux is disabled on the computer, so I don't understand why it is even trying to load a policy. Is there a kernel parameter I can give it to stop SELinux? Is there any other way to get past this message? -- Bill Gee

I ask because bz#1550584 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1550584 mentions "fixed in version kernel-rt-3.10.0-1063.rt56.1023.el7" And the latest tag in "releases" link above is for kernel-rt-3.10.0-1062.7.1.rt56.1030.el7 1062 vs 1063 I would like to see if the kernel update fixes my latency problem. Forcing TLS for SMTP?

I have a goal of securing email. Updated the company mail server and DNS (CentOS 7 + Postfix, otherwise pretty stock) with support for SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. So far, all good, and everything "just works". Our mail server has supported SMTP / TLS for a long time, but recently I've been considering requring TLS all the time. Is there anybody here who's done this? Has it caused any particular fallout? I'm curious about: 1) Requiring SMTP / TLS for any inbound email. 2) Requiring SMTP / TLS for any outbound email. Thanks

You will likely not be able to communicate with the corespondents involved on those connections if you require TLS on all connections. - Richard

browsers slowing Centos 7 installation to a crawl

My video problems mentioned in a previous thread are gone, though I do not know why. Now my problem is that whenever I have a browser open and an internet connection, my Centos 7 slows to a crawl. Chromium seems to be the least bad. Sometimes it slows to the point that I cannot even move the mouse. Even switching between virtual terminals takes a while sometimes. When I get there, top generally shows me between two and five D states. I've changed service providers lately. The problem survived the change. Some sites seem to aggravate the problem. Most recently, a site tried to connect to c.amazon.adsystem.com . I got the message waiting for c.amazon.adsystem.com . Adding kmod to pxe install

Hey guys, I'm stumped in how to add the kmod rpm to pxe install. I need it to be installed but also loaded during the install as well. The rpm in question is the 3w-9xxx from elrepo https://centos.pkgs.org/8/elrepo-x86_64/kmod-3w-9xxx-2.26.02.014-1.el8_0.el… I'm constantly getting the following message Warning: can't find installer main image path in .treeinfo Any help or pointing in right direction would be appreciated. CentOS 7 as a guest VM

I am experiencing an issue that my process does not wake out of a select() call when a single character is received in an input file descriptor when running as a VMware guest. Anyone ever experienced this ? I can run tshark and see the character arrive, but my process does not wake up and see that character. Most times it works - but once in a while it does not. So I made a change on my code - and did not just wait on select() - but just try to read the buffer all the time and print the results. once in a while that character is "delayed" getting to my input buffer. Top reports the machine is 99% idle. Any thoughts? Jerry

Hi, folks, I would like to (slightly) expand our number of CentOS Dojos in 2020. (If you're not familiar with the concept of Dojos, please read https://wiki.centos.org/Events/Dojo/ and perhaps attend our event in Brussels in January! https://wiki.centos.org/Events/Dojo/Brussels2020 ) For 2020, we have tentatively 3 planned: * FOSDEM Dojo (Jan 31) * Oak Ridge National Labs (September) * CERN (October, I think) Dojos are typically held one of three places: * Colocated with an existing tech event (like the FOSDEM event) * At a business, or research org, like ORNL/CERN * At a University, targeted at students (We have done events at Univ Cincinnati, Univ Kentucky, Boston University, and are hoping to do something at UTenn in 2020) If you are interested in hosting a Dojo, please get in touch with me. yum update was run 23.10.19 and then 05.11.19 to the beginning of the update 5.11.2019 kernel logging to /var/log/messages was ok. During the update at 5.11.2019 logging to /var/log/messages finished. I persume, this bug began during processing updates. yum-log shows: ........... Hi all! I have several VMs, all in virtualbox 6.0.14 and all the VBOX add-ons are up to date. I don't use them daily, last used any of them probably 4-6 weeks ago, pretty sure it was already running 6.0.14 by that time. they were all fine when last used. Two of them are C7, one is a clone of the other, and the other is C8. each seems to have different symptoms. the C7 clone claims there is no initramfs, no matter which kernel I try to boot. Has anyone actually got CLAMD and EXIM working? I've just had a go on a new VPS server without success. The only thing that happened was that my server slowed because clamd was hogging CPU. I have done a lot of googling and all I found was a couple of howto's that said the same thing, and my questions from 2015 which is the last time I tried this. I can get clamd / freshclam etc installed, although from the two howto's I worked from I had to edit / create service files and edit config files. However, I still do not manage to get a clamd.exim socket created on my system.

External HD partitioning & formatting considerations

Hi, One of my clients has a mixed Linux/Mac OS/Windows environment in his office. He just purchased a 4 TB external hard disk, which he intends to use on his various workstations. Up until recently, I've been using plain old MBR/FAT for hard disks in mixed environments. Fire up fdisk, make one big 0b type partition, and then format it using mkdosfs. Unfortunately, there's a 2 TB limit to that. Of course, I could still use a GPT partition, but then I'd still have to format it using a "common denominator" filesystem, e. g. FAT... which is also limited to 2 TB as far as I know. So what now? Use Windows 10 to format the disk using NTFS? This, Windows and Linux could use it, and I'd have to check if Mac OS can manage NTFS file systems. A few years ago, it didn't. Any suggestions?
