compile question on CentOS 7

I am trying to use the fnmatch() function in a C program and pass as the 3rd arg (options) of case insensitive search... When I use the value FNM_CASEFOLD it does not work... I'm confused on what to send to fnmatch() to do a case insensitive search. Any pointers ? Thanks. Jerry

netmask set with ifconfig doesn't hold

I gather that ifconfig is a way of setting the netmask in the current shell instead of a persistent value. I say this because I am running it and see it for my specific network interface, directly after running it. However if I restart the network service the netmask is reverted to the previous value. What is the correct way to set the new netmask for the network interface to make it persistent. if it's different for CentOS 6 and 7 I'd like to know that too. FYI - I tried searching about this but none of the info has really helped so far. Also consider this like "changing netmask for dummies" since I am not an administrator and am just searching and trying these things. Thanks very much in advance.KM

read permission on rotated logs

When logs (e.g. /var/log/maillog) are rotated (e.g. to /var/log/maillog-YYYYMDD) is there a way via systemd or whatever to assign read permission to a specific group? Right now, for example - ls -l maillog* -rw------- 1 root root 3105240 Mar 13 22:04 maillog -rw------- 1 root root 1079031 Feb 24 04:39 maillog-20190224 -rw------- 1 root root 7237640 Mar 1 12:59 maillog-20190228 -rw------- 1 root root 1297508 Mar 3 04:21 maillog-20190303 -rw------- 1 root root 1319371 Mar 10 08:17 maillog-20190310 What I would like - ls -l maillog* -rw------- 1 root root 3105240 Mar 13 22:04 maillog -rw-r----- 1 root somegroup 1079031 Feb 24 04:39 maillog-20190224 -rw-r----- 1 root somegroup 7237640 Mar 1 12:59 maillog-20190228 -rw-r----- 1 root somegroup 1297508 Mar 3 04:21 maillog-20190303 -rw-r----- 1 root somegroup 1319371 Mar 10 08:17 maillog-20190310 That way a user in somegroup could run a script that analyzes the rotated logs w/o needing root privileges. Obviously I could put a script in /etc/cron.hourly that looks for rotated log files and changes ownership / permission, but I am wondering if there is a "proper" way to configure it via systemd or another utility.

Firefox view downloads folder - changed program

Hi All, A short while back, Firefox changed from using (I believe) Dolphin to using gwenview when I choose 'view in container' or 'view all downloads'. The problem with this is that when I choose 'view in containter' it no longer selects the appropriate file. Does anyone know how to change it back? I'm using C7 with KDE Gary

Centos installer not detecting hard drive

Hi, I have a new labtop and i want to install CentOS 7.6 on it. My labtop has two hard drives : - A 256Go SSD - A standard 1 To hard drive None of the two hard drives are detected by the Centos installer consequently i can't proceed with the installation. If i try with a Fedora server distro, then the standard hard drive is detected, the SSD one is still not detected. I do prefer to install Centos as is is the closed Linux version from RHEL, so what can i do to solve the issue ? Regards, Faird

Nvidia config tool config order of screens doesn t work

Hallo, after installing 2 Nvidia Gforce 650er cards (2 cards with 2 displays) and the driver from nvidia.com my 4 displays are active and everything is fine. My question: the option to configure the displays using the mouse to move the screens in the right order doesn t work like under windows with simple moving. Sometimes it is possible to change the order but sometimes it isn t possible to move a screen between 2 others. Any hints how to solve this? Ralf

CPAN not working, or is it?

(I've just tried this on a second C7 box, literally clean install, only did it on Friday, with the same results) I'm replacing a dead F19 box with a new C7 one and I'm trying to get my Perl install completed. Ultimately, I need to get Selenium::Remote::Driver working, but I'm struggling before that. I started off as always by using RPM's for everything I possibly can. I then started to use CPAN for everything else. It looked like CPAN was working and things were installing "OK". However, as I went for bigger modules, anything that had dependences were then failing as the dependencie were installed OK but then did not appear to be available. The last thing I've just tried is to update CPAN as the RPM is 1.9800 and the latest is 2.6.
