anybody need a ... ??

Hi! We're cleaning house, trying to downsize so we can move into a retirement community, so we're finding all sorts of stuff to get rid of. One thing I'm reluctant to throw out is my Multitech MT5600BA V90 modem. I used it for dialup for several years before broadband became available and it was great, stable, and fast. (its predecessor, a much-touted consumer-grade V90 modem was unreliable and not great). I'm thinking we are/were on an unstable copper pair, but the phone company said it was fine. So, anyway, I have this lovely industrial-strength modem I'd like to provide someone, "free to a good home", if anyone has, or knows of anyone who has, a use for a V90 modem. Original packaging (including the floppy-based "drivers" for windoze! :) ) and a printout of the modem manual. Anyone?? Thanks in advance! Installing KDE on C8?

Centos 7 Lyx - installing templates and class files

I'm not kind of an expert using Lyx, but I occasionally do some "structured writing" and on those occasions I've really enjoyed using Lyx; the workflow and the output just can't be beat. I'm enough of a novice with it that I've never used anything other than the "Article (Standard Class)" document class. I wrote a short paper using Lyx and the "Article (Standard Class)" last night, and after finishing that I started playing around with Lyx in an effort to learn more about it since I really believe that I'm drastically under-utilizing an extremely powerful program. I have a question about the template and class files. When I use "File - New from Template" I get a large list of files in the /usr/share/lyx/templates/ directory, all of which seem to have come from the lyx-common rpm. When I select one of these templates, some of them work but some of them say something like: "The selected document class requires external files that are not available. The document class cannot be compiled until the following prerequisites are installed: XXX.cls" (where XXX is usually a name related somehow to the name of the template). Searching for the XXX. Same thing if I just use "File - New" and then look at Document - Settings - Document Class". There are all kinds of document classes listed but about 75% of them are grayed out and unselectable. It appears that lyx-common installs all kinds of templates but not the cls files that are needed to actually use them. It would be nice to somehow enable all of these templates and document classes so I could play around with them a bit. Some google searching has led to some fairly contradictory information about how this all works. One suggestion that I came across was to simply install all of the available texlive rpms and that will install all of the missing files. rpm tells me that I currently have 216 texlive* rpms on my computer, and yum says that there are 688 texlive* rpms available so there are apparently another 472 texlive rpms that I don't actually have installed. Before I install 472 more rpms on this computer I would like to ask any of you fine folks who use lyx if this is indeed the right way to go about this, or if I'm barking up the wrong tree here? How do you get the rest of the files that Lyx needs to be able to use that long list of (unavailable) document classes and templates? -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ www.melvilletheatre.com

C8 Question

Hi list, I installed on my workstation C8.1 (1911) and performed a minimal install and then installed XFCE from EPEL. I noticed a strange behaviour (don't know if this is the wanted default). If I try ,from normal user shell, to run command like "reboot" or "shutdown -h now" system will reboot/shutdown. This happens on tty console, on xfce terminal and ssh session. My user is not in wheel and during install I have not enabled checkbox to give that user administration permission. I tried to create a new user with adduser but got the same problem. To solve this I modified polkit login1 policy on /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.login1.policy setting <allow_active>no</allow_active> for statement that concern reboot and shutdown/poweroff. Why on CentOS a normal user can shutdown the system without root privileges? I think that on any server normal user should not be able to shutdown the system without privileges. This is a bug or a wanted default? Thanks in advance.

yum update / kernal update failed - remove or repair

I have a VPS running C7. I ran a 'yum update' which included a kernel update. The yum update wasn't a total success because mariadb updates failed. However everything else appeared to work. However, when I rebooted the server it did not restart. I have managed to get the ISP's support desk to boot the server by selecting the previous kernel, and I now have access to my box again. As I will probably only have one chance to fix this (without having to get the ISP's help again) I was wondering if there are any clear instructions on how to remove a failed kernel RPM update, returning the server to the state it was in prior to the YUM update?

Fetchmail

Hi all, Anyone know how to specify for fetchmail in .netrc the "folder" to read ? If tried folder XYZ and it says unknown token folder. Man page says that should work. Jerry

YUM (DNF) Possible Confusion Centos 8

Folks In a test Centos 8 installation as a guest of VirtualBox on Windows 10, I want to install ffmpeg, and support for exfat. They're not in the standard distribution (as far as I know), so I issue as root: yum -y --enablerepo rpmfusion-free-updates install ffmpeg fuse-exfat exfat-utils and that works just fine. The ffmpeg functionality works; I haven't tested exfat yet. Good wifi NIC?

Good morning, I'm looking for a good USB Wifi NIC that will work with the kernel modules for a stock CentOS 8.1. I have an ALFA AWUS036ACH NIC but it looks like the drivers need to compiler for the kernel and I'm having trouble with that. So I'd like something that works, but not necessarily high performing, so I can build the drivers for the ALFA NIC. Thanks! Jeff

Hello, I have an Intel NUC7PJYH running CentOS 6.8. This is a NUC with standard USB, 1GbE and 2*HDMI. Installation was no problem providing acpi=off. The problem is that by default the two displays are mirrored and I can’t seem to separate them. I can only see one HDMI port from CentOS. I need to see both HDMI ports discreetly.
