MATE 1.20 test build for CentOS 7 available

Hi everyone, There's been discussions in the past about updating MATE RPMs in EPEL-7: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1436260 https://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2019-August/173154.html (and lots of others...) As a proof-of-concept, I've written some scripts that clone specific commits from the Fedora master branches, and then runs a tool to re-apply RPM scriptlets that are required by EL7 but removed from the Fedora .spec files. The scripts are available at: https://github.com/gebailey/mate-rpms/tree/master/1.20/el7 There's also instructions there if you want to try upgrading to MATE 1.20 w/o rebuilding them yourself. If these packages work for others, perhaps we can revisit the idea of updating the epel7 branches of the Fedora git repos and submitting an official update. There's nothing here (yet) about building MATE 1.22 (which might require a newer gcc for EL7), or building anything on CentOS 8, but thought the CentOS 7 users might find this helpful. -Greg

Brother HL-L2360DW printing quality

I have the above printer but have not been able to resolve issues with the printing quality in CentOS 7. The test page prints fine but when I print PDF-documents, most recently using Chinese fonts, it is lacking and the pages very hard to read. The settings in the Mate Cups configuration panel are fine and set to 600 dpi, the settings in the printer menu are all OK yet it prints more like maybe 150 or even 75 dpi. Any suggestion what might be wrong?

We are seeing a problem that occurs ~5% of the time when rebooting CentOS 7.7 where systemd gets a 'Connection timed out' to D-Bus just after the D-Bus service starts - from 'journalctl -x' : ... Hello all-- I kept getting messages that my old Flash Player 31 was obsolete so I went in search of an update. I came across several references for getting flash plugin 32 that basically were the same as this page -- https://www.if-not-true-then-false.com/2010/install-adobe-flash-player-10-o… However, it seems the site -- |http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/ does NOT resolve. CentOS 7 kickstart repo directive

Is the kickstart repo directive broken under CentOS 7? Every attempt with a repo directive in the kickstart file fails during the software selection step. Removing the repo directives and the packages from those repos under %packages makes it work. On console 2, I have verified that the (NFS) repos specified in the kickstart file are mounted and that the repo metadata has been copied over to /tmp/yum.cache. One of the packages from one of the repos that is explicitly listed under the %packages section appears in packaging.log for dependency checking. The custom repos work fine with yum on a running machine, so there is no problem with the metadata. Logging is poor and does not log what is actually wrong.

UEFI on CentOS 8.1

Are UEFI clients still not possible on 8.1 ? I was looking for a setup in the GUI and dont see it. Searching "suggests" that --boot-uefi may be a command line option - but again I see nothing on the GUI. Thanks Jerry

system-config-network centos altarch

Hi I have just installed centos 7 altarch on a 32 bit computer. I selected the minimal system install. I see that when I search with yum there is no command system-config-network, i.e. yum search system-config-network Does this command (system-config-network) still exist? Would I expect it to be in the repository even though I did a minimum install? Although I do not have X, I can run some X applications by using ssh -Y from another computer, although messing with the network settings could be tricky...

CentOS 8 on USB disk

I did the dd if=CentOS-8.1.1911-x86_64-dvd1.iso of=/dev/sdd to a 16G USB disk then tried to use it on an install. The installer said invalid install media. Any way to verify if the "write" to disk was good ? I got no errors on the dd. I did re-download the iso and did a diff and there was no diff. So I think my iso is OK. Jerry

Folks I am trying to install Centos 8.1 on a MacBook Pro. I have a bootable USB stick with centos-8.1-boot (which I think is the equivalent of a netinstall), and it boots. However, when I select the storage option, and choose to make more space on the SSD, go through the confirming dialogs, the installer complains that it was unable to save the information to the disk. A similar attempt using Centos-7 netinstall successfully rewrites the SSD. This failure also occurs when I boot the Centos-8.1-dvd. Is there something else I should be doing? Thanks David

Centos 7: UPD packet checksum verification?

Hi, what does Centos 7 do with UPD packets having invalid checksums? Are such packets inevitably dropped? Does a network card drop them when it does checksum verification in hardware even before the packets go anywhere? In general, if someone were to send me UPD packets with invalid checksums over the internet, how far would such packets get? In particular, how likely it is that SRTP packets sent over the internet over UPD could be damaged in such a way that the verification of the authentication tag fails when they arrive at the receiver, and how might such damage be caused?

Hi! We're cleaning house, trying to downsize so we can move into a retirement community, so we're finding all sorts of stuff to get rid of. One thing I'm reluctant to throw out is my Multitech MT5600BA V90 modem. I used it for dialup for several years before broadband became available and it was great, stable, and fast. (its predecessor, a much-touted consumer-grade V90 modem was unreliable and not great). I'm thinking we are/were on an unstable copper pair, but the phone company said it was fine. So, anyway, I have this lovely industrial-strength modem I'd like to provide someone, "free to a good home", if anyone has, or knows of anyone who has, a use for a V90 modem. Original packaging (including the floppy-based "drivers" for windoze! :) ) and a printout of the modem manual. Anyone?? Thanks in advance! Centos 7 Lyx - installing templates and class files

I'm not kind of an expert using Lyx, but I occasionally do some "structured writing" and on those occasions I've really enjoyed using Lyx; the workflow and the output just can't be beat. I'm enough of a novice with it that I've never used anything other than the "Article (Standard Class)" document class. I wrote a short paper using Lyx and the "Article (Standard Class)" last night, and after finishing that I started playing around with Lyx in an effort to learn more about it since I really believe that I'm drastically under-utilizing an extremely powerful program. I have a question about the template and class files. When I use "File - New from Template" I get a large list of files in the /usr/share/lyx/templates/ directory, all of which seem to have come from the lyx-common rpm. When I select one of these templates, some of them work but some of them say something like: "The selected document class requires external files that are not available. The document class cannot be compiled until the following prerequisites are installed: XXX.cls" (where XXX is usually a name related somehow to the name of the template). Searching for the XXX. Same thing if I just use "File - New" and then look at Document - Settings - Document Class". There are all kinds of document classes listed but about 75% of them are grayed out and unselectable. It appears that lyx-common installs all kinds of templates but not the cls files that are needed to actually use them. It would be nice to somehow enable all of these templates and document classes so I could play around with them a bit. Some google searching has led to some fairly contradictory information about how this all works. One suggestion that I came across was to simply install all of the available texlive rpms and that will install all of the missing files. rpm tells me that I currently have 216 texlive* rpms on my computer, and yum says that there are 688 texlive* rpms available so there are apparently another 472 texlive rpms that I don't actually have installed. Before I install 472 more rpms on this computer I would like to ask any of you fine folks who use lyx if this is indeed the right way to go about this, or if I'm barking up the wrong tree here? C8 Question

Hi list, I installed on my workstation C8.1 (1911) and performed a minimal install and then installed XFCE from EPEL. I noticed a strange behaviour (don't know if this is the wanted default). If I try ,from normal user shell, to run command like "reboot" or "shutdown -h now" system will reboot/shutdown. This happens on tty console, on xfce terminal and ssh session. My user is not in wheel and during install I have not enabled checkbox to give that user administration permission. I tried to create a new user with adduser but got the same problem. To solve this I modified polkit login1 policy on /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.login1.policy setting <allow_active>no</allow_active> for statement that concern reboot and shutdown/poweroff. Why on CentOS a normal user can shutdown the system without root privileges? I think that on any server normal user should not be able to shutdown the system without privileges. This is a bug or a wanted default? Thanks in advance.

yum update / kernal update failed - remove or repair

I have a VPS running C7. I ran a 'yum update' which included a kernel update. The yum update wasn't a total success because mariadb updates failed. However everything else appeared to work. However, when I rebooted the server it did not restart. I have managed to get the ISP's support desk to boot the server by selecting the previous kernel, and I now have access to my box again. As I will probably only have one chance to fix this (without having to get the ISP's help again) I was wondering if there are any clear instructions on how to remove a failed kernel RPM update, returning the server to the state it was in prior to the YUM update?

Folks In a test Centos 8 installation as a guest of VirtualBox on Windows 10, I want to install ffmpeg, and support for exfat. They're not in the standard distribution (as far as I know), so I issue as root: yum -y --enablerepo rpmfusion-free-updates install ffmpeg fuse-exfat exfat-utils and that works just fine. The ffmpeg functionality works; I haven't tested exfat yet. Hello, I have an Intel NUC7PJYH running CentOS 6.8. This is a NUC with standard USB, 1GbE and 2*HDMI. Installation was no problem providing acpi=off. The problem is that by default the two displays are mirrored and I can’t seem to separate them. I can only see one HDMI port from CentOS. I need to see both HDMI ports discreetly. I configured a vps using centos 8, all is working fine but I'm not able to send email from this server. I tried $ telnet smtp.mailtrap.io 25 but it doesn't work yet $ telnet www.google.ca 80 does work and particularly $ telnet smtp.mailtrap.io 2525 does work too. Centos 8: change desktop at display manager

In a new install of Centos 8, I installed the xfce4 packages from EPEL. CentOS 7.6 1810 vs. VirtualBox : bug with keyboard layout selection

Hi, I'm currently working on my next Linux book, which will be an elementary course about CentOS administration. I'm using VirtualBox for all the installer screenshots. Since CentOS has recently been upgraded to version 7.6, I thought I might as well base all book references on this version. So I downloaded the 7.6 1810 minimal ISO and started a fresh installation in VirtualBox. I'm using a Swiss French keyboard layout (ch-fr or fr_CH-latin1), so one of the first things I do in the installer is replace the default French AZERTY keyboard (since I use the french language) by a swiss french QWERTZ layout. Now when I reach this dialog in the installer and try do define my new layout, the slider in the selection window doesn't appear, and clicking on any of the first layouts doesn't do anything, so I'm basically stuck there. I'm running OpenSUSE Leap 15.0 KDE on my workstation, so I tried the same thing with the previous CentOS 7.5 1804 minimal ISO, and the keyboard selection dialog works perfectly. So my intuition would tell me that there's a nasty bug in the CentOS 7.6 installer. Maybe it went unnoticed, since most folks stick to the default keyboard layout selected in their language. Any suggestions ? CentOS 8 and DELL 7540 Intel AX200 WIFI

I just wanted to follow up to my post from October 2019. I just installed CentOS 8.1 and my WIFI card is now detected and works properly! So I'm a happy camper again, I guess I just had hardware that was too new and CentOS 8.0 didn't have the driver for my WIFI card but CentOS 8.1 *DOES* have it. Good thing, Both RedHat and DELL says it is "completely supported". I was seriously thinking about sending the hardware back to Dell to reorder a configuration that worked, but now I don't have to, there is now driver support for the Intel AX200 WIFI card. ssh failure from CentOS7 to Centos6

Hi, I have a strange problem with a freshly installed Centos7 desktop (most8pc25). I can't ssh to 2 CentOS6 servers, even with firewall disabled on the client and on the server. But I can connect from the server to the client, all in the same VLAN. I can also ssh from this desktop to centos7 servers in the same VLAN or in another VLAN. No idea about this problem. After upgrade to CentOS 8.1 default gateway missing

Hi, Tonight I upgraded two CentOS 8 boxes to CentOS 8.1 (1911). Then after a reboot of the first server the network was unavailable. In IPMI console everything except the network was looking good. Network was unreachable. No errors in NetworkManager. I also restarted NetworkManager, but it did not help. Then I discovered that the default gateway suddenly was missing. Then I rebooted the server one more time, but network was still down. Then both myself and a technician in my datcenter was debugging this (I had to wake him up in the middle of the night, costing me a lot of money), without finding any reason for why the default gateway was missing after reboot. Then we rebooted the server a third time, and all of a sudden the problem was gone and the default gateway was back. Then, after this, I also upgraded my second CentOS 8 server to CentOS 8.1 and did a reboot. And the very same thing happened to this server after reboot! The default gateway was missing after reboot, and network was down. Then I did a extra reboot of this server also, and when it came back up everything was working correct and the default gateway was back. So the first server I needed to reboot two extra times to have the default gateway back and network working. And the second server I needed to reboot only one extra time for the problem to be solved. The two boxes is not VPSs or anything, but bare metal dedicated servers. Also prior to upgrading to CentOS 8.1, these two boxes has been rebooted serveral times previously, without any problems at all. Only after upgrading to CentOS 8.1 this happened on both of them for the first time. I can't believe I am the only one that experience this? My guess is that this is a unknown random intermittent bug in CentOS 8.1 that kicked in. I just hope this does not continue to happen in the future. The hardware is the Broadcom adaptor, using DHCP. No firewall is running in Centos 8 yet. This exact configuration works fine with Centos 7. The symptom I see is that DHCP, Ping, DNS Lookup all work, but no data transfer seems to work. I tried a CURL command to a local web machine (works with Centos 7), and it just hangs. The web server does not see the request. When I switch the network adaptor (in the VM) to NAT, everything works, probably indicating that the selection of the adaptor is the problem. Folks I know that support for the network adaptors supported by the 'e1000' driver have been removed from the base distribution. However, I have exactly that controller (Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet PCI, not PCIe). Is there a way for me to add support for that on Centos 8.1? Perhaps a driver in an RPM package? Thanks David

Limiting what devices can pair over Bluetooth?

I've managed to get a Wacom Intuos Pro 2 (PTH-660) tablet working over Bluetooth to a CentOS 7 install. Well, I didn't actually have to do much to get it working ... However, we don't normally enable Bluetooth for security reasons, so I need to be able to configure things so Bluetooth can _only_ be used to pair with Wacom tablets As I never used Bluetooth in anger before, I'm struggling to find out where to start looking - does anyone know how to do this or any pointers on where I should start? The image file includes the wrong (outdated) syslinux 6.03 and requires 6.04 per rufus. The fedora burner kept failing but rufus detected the issue and downloaded syslinux 6.04 files. Please update the distro.

CentOS 8 - auto-loading kickstart from USB doesn't work

While updating my base kickstart for CentOS 8.1, I noticed it won't auto-load from a USB device. I'm testing in a VM, but usually add a USB drive for the ks.cfg because my kickstart skips USB drives when picking where to install. If I leave the drive a virtio, or make it a CD, it works. All, While updating my package using dnf update all I allow dnf to clean some package with unresolved dependencies. I would like to reinstall some of them but got an error message "but none of the providers can be installed" during the install process as dnf is trying to install the dependencies. . [semi-OT] C7 Possible bug but I can't determine what tool has the problem

Hi all, I'm writing a script that uses rsync to sync 2 dirs on C7. I noticed a strange behaviour. I have 2 dir: src and dest. In src dir I generate a testfile with "dd if=/dev/zero of=testfile bs=1M count=100" and when I run "du -h testfile" I get the correct result. Then I sync src/ to dest/ using "rsync -avS src/ dest/", all ok but when I run "du -h dest/testfile" I get 0 and if I run "du -b dest/testfile" I get the correct size in bytes. I made several test to see what happens and noticed that removing -S (--sparse) from rsync command problem does not occour. In another test, thinking about a problem on 0ed file, I tried file generation using /dev/urandom then /dev/zero and running rsync -avS the problem is disappeared. This not seems to be a CentOS 7 related problem. I tried also on Fedora 31 and get the same problem. Adding options to grub

So I want to add a few options to the kernel (say iommu support). I have been told before to avoid using grub2-mkconfig because it would apply the changes to all currently available (to boot from) boot kernels. Instead, I should edit just the latest kernel entry in the grub.cfg file, adding the option to the line that used to start with "linux16" in centos6. This way, if it went boink, all I had to do is reboot, pick another kernel from the grub menu and off I went. And, it seems that every future kernel upgrade would incorporate this change. Looking at a centos7.7 setup, I take the equivalent line in /boot/grub/grub.conf is kernel /boot/vmlinuz-3.10.0-123.4.4.el7.x86_64 console=hvc0 xencons=tty0 root=/dev/xvda ro I am now looking into a centos8 and its grub.cfg (/boot/efi/EFI/centos/grub.cfg in this case) looks rather different. Is what I have described above still the safest way to customize the kernel? Or is there a cleaner way to do the same while still leaving me the option to go back to the grub menu and pick an undisturbed kernel?

Problem with disconnecting SSH-sessions

I am running CentOS 7 on a workstation and CentOS 6 and 7 on a couple of servers I am remotely connecting to using the same username and thus ssh configuration. However, one of the servers running CentOS 6 I keep getting disconnected from whereas I have no such problems with another CentOS 6 server and CentOS 7 server. The latter two are on two different hosted server setups far, far away whereas the problematic one is my own physical hardware in the same building. I have tried to make sure the sshd configuration on all servers are identical but still have this problem. I can rule out a general problem with the router in my office since all connections are via that router, the only difference is that the problematic server is in the same building and the connection loops back via the same router but through an external IP address. /var/log/secure on the workstation offers no clues with no messages regarding any disconnection. If anyone has suggestions what I should check, it would be greatly appreciated!

Blocking attacks from a range of IP addresses

I am being attacked by an entire subnet where the first two parts of the IP address remain identical but the last two parts vary sufficiently that it is not caught by fail2ban since the attempts do not meet the cut-off of a certain number of attempts within the given time. Has anyone created a fail2ban filter for this type of attack? As of right now, I have manually banned a range of IP addresses but would like to automate it for the future.

Hi, I'm using sshguard to acomplish this. You can acutally choose tthe size of the range you want to block, /8 of /16, no problem. It works perfect! It is included in the repo both for C7 and C8. copying files to fill flash drives

Back in the days of DOS I had a program that I obtained from somewhere called FILL. FILL would take the name of a directory and then start writing files from that directory onto a series of floppy disks in such a way that each disk was made as full as possible, but without modifying the files that it was writing. So you might end up with disk 1 having files A B and D on them since D fitted but C was too big so it went onto Disk 2 along with files E and F. Before I re-invent the wheel here, does someone already have a way to do this with Linux so you can write a series of flash drives and fill them with the contents of a specified directory without modifying the files that get written? How do I let a CentOS 8 client make use of the shared printers advertised by CUPS on the network? In CentOS 6, this was just a matter in a checkbox "Show printers shared by other systems" on the CUPS Admin page. Is this function still available somehow? Centos 6 iwl3945

Hi everyone, I'm having a problem with an iwl3945 wireless adaptor in my laptop running Centos 6. Recently it has been failing to connect to a either 2.4G or 5G Wi-Fi coming from a Draytek Wireless Router. It has usually managed to connect in the past although it has sometimes been a little temperamental. I'm not sure what has changed that has stopped it working. I've tried Kernels 2.6.32-754.24.34 down to 2.6.32-754.15.3 in Centos 6 without it working. This machine also has an old Fedora Core 14 boot with Kernel 2.6.35.14-97 that connects to Wi-Fi just fine. Also the laptop dual boots Win 7 and that also connects to Wi-Fi without issue. How would I go about diagnosing this in the Centos 6 boot? I am looking to make use of gcc 8/9 on CentOS 7, which is currently with gcc 4.8.5. How do I go about doing this? SCL repository provides the same as part of devtoolset8, but devtoolset8 libstdc++-devel i686 package is missing, without which I can not build 32 bit applications. Are there any repository sources from where I can get this? Otherwise, I am open to building the packages from sources. Please let me know how can one go about this. Any suggestions and pointers appreciated.

CentOS 7 yum update

I was in the middle of a yum update on physical box over teh weekend and power died. Ssytem came pack up. can't boot after volume rename

I renamed my volume with vgrename however I didn't complete the other steps. Mainly update fstab and intiramfs. Once I booted, I was dropped on the Dracut shell. From here I can see the newly rename VG and I can lvm lvscan as well as activate it, lvm vgchange -ay. However I can't figure out what to do next, I'm assuming I need to regenerate the initramfs and then boot to change grub? Could someone point me in the right direction to recovering a FS from Dracut, or other means, once the volume group name was changed. TIA, Paul

Network Diagnostics

In our smallest office, we have a Dell CentOS 7 system, a Windows system and an HP 8610 printer, all hard-wire Ethernet connected with a Linksys router. The router provides Internet connection. All of the network-connected systems get their IP address from the router at power up. Successful network connection of the printer at power up has recently started taking much longer than usual. The display on the front of the printer indicates that it is initially attempting wireless connection even though this feature is turned off. Ethernet connection is eventually achieved and the printer functions normally on the network but just for a few minutes. After about five minutes, the printer drops its Ethernet connection and appears to be attempting wireless connection once again. During this period, network connectivity is disrupted for the other systems on the network. They are not able to communicate with each other or access the Internet through the router. Turning off the printer restores network connection for the other systems. One of our personnel at another office suggested using Wireshark to check out the network when the printer is having difficulty. Wireshark was apparently not on this system so we installed it using yum install. The tail end of the apparently successful installation process is shown below. Unfortunately, we cannot seem to find Wireshark on the system. Is it possible that Wireshark was not actually installed or do we just not know how to locate and use it? Is this printer networking issue a known problem and is Wireshark the right tool to diagnose the problem? Thanks. USB drive very slow on CentOS 8

I recently upgraded from CentOS 7 to CentOS 8. I have a Mediasonic HF2-SU3S2 external drive enclosure with 4x3Tb drives configured as a software RAID 5 array (mdadm) with LVM. It's connected to a USB 3.0 port. On CentOS 7, the drive performance is reasonable. On CentOS 8, performance is extremely slow, about USB 1.0 performance. Maybe worse. Connecting an external USB SSD to the CentOS 8 system appears to perform well. I've updated the ASUS Prime-B350-Plus motherboard with the latest BIOS, but it doesn't appear to make any difference. systemd-coredump service

I am unable to locate systemd-coredump service on CentOS 7.5. It is not listed under "systemctl -a" and also I'm unable to locate the associated unit file (folder /usr/lib/systemd/system/ ). Am I missing any package which installs this service?

tomcat package and repo for centos8

Hi all, sadly there is no epel tomcat package so far. As per https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1745960 there is no progress for three months. Is there any other third party repository which builds tomcat for centos/rhel 8? Thx Rainer

Nasty Fail2Ban update for Centos 7

Hi all... Recently a new Fail2Ban was available among some other updates for my Centos 7 system, and I just updated all. It seems that was a very BAD idea. Just noticed that Fail2Ban have generated a 6MB error log because of the update, and FirewallD a 1MB log of errors ! (not sure if any of those were really working after this) ok, I'll just run yum downgrade fail2ban I thought. Naa, no way back - Epel doesn't have a fallback option ! Then gotta dig into Koji, to find the old version, download it, and downgrade to that - and pew, everything is back to normal. The old one seems to be version 0.9.7 and the new one is 0.10.4 I haven't had time to look into Fail2Bans info about these 2 version, but since there is a major version change - is it really possible to just upgrade these ? Sure, I would love to have a working 0.10.4 for my Centos 7 - but it shouldn't destroy my existing system - or it should at least warn me about that - or what to fix. Allan.

CentOS 7 as a Fibre Channel SAN Target

For quite some time I’ve been using FreeNAS to provide services as a NAS over ethernet and SAN over Fibre Channel to CentOS 7 servers each using their own export, not sharing the same one. It’s time for me to replace my hardware and I have a new R720XD that I’d like to use in the same capacity but configure CentOS 7 as a Fibre Channel target rather than use FreeNAS any further. I’m doing virtualization and this will allow me to have failover from one node to the other since they’ll all be sharing the same export rather than me simply backing up to the FreeNAS server the way I am now. Does anyone know of any really good current articles that explain how to set up CentOS 7 as the target in such a configuration and also setting up CLVMd so they can all share an export over Fibre Channel from CentOS 7? KVM Random Reboots AMD EPYC Server

our new Server with AMD EPYC and super micro board reboots ramdonly. There is no error message before the reboot in /var/log/messages. we are running 2 Server with VMWare workstation without any problem. Nginx and SELinux on CentOS 7

Hi, I'm currently fiddling with Nginx on CentOS 7. Eventually I want to use it instead of Apache on some servers. Apache works more or less out of the box with SELinux. My websites are all stored under /var/www, and ls -Z shows me that all files created under /var/www are correctly labeled httpd_sys_content_t. On my sandbox server I don't have Apache (httpd) installed, only Nginx (the nginx package from EPEL). I manually created the /var/www directory and put a handful of static websites in there to play around with. Curiously enough, I got a SELinux alert. I took a peek in /var/www, and here's what the SELinux context looks like: unconfined_u:object_r:var_t:s0 Now I'm a bit puzzled. Is the correct httpd_sys_content_t context only applied if the httpd package is installed? How else can I explain this strange behavior? Any suggestions?
