MATE 1.20 test build for CentOS 7 available

Hi everyone, There's been discussions in the past about updating MATE RPMs in EPEL-7: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1436260 https://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2019-August/173154.html (and lots of others...) As a proof-of-concept, I've written some scripts that clone specific commits from the Fedora master branches, and then runs a tool to re-apply RPM scriptlets that are required by EL7 but removed from the Fedora .spec files. The scripts are available at: https://github.com/gebailey/mate-rpms/tree/master/1.20/el7 There's also instructions there if you want to try upgrading to MATE 1.20 w/o rebuilding them yourself. If these packages work for others, perhaps we can revisit the idea of updating the epel7 branches of the Fedora git repos and submitting an official update. There's nothing here (yet) about building MATE 1.22 (which might require a newer gcc for EL7), or building anything on CentOS 8, but thought the CentOS 7 users might find this helpful. -Greg

LibreOffice locking up

I am running LibreOffice 5.3.6.1 under the latest update of CentOS 7 and the Mate desktop. Not infrequently LibreOffice Calc locks up and I have to force close the application. Altough the spreadsheet is rather large I would not consider it complex. This has been going on for some time and I am curious if the bug might be in LibreOffice or if there is some interaction with the Mate desktop that might be responsible. Both CentOS, LibreOffice and Mate have been regularly updated from the standard repositories for a long time. Does anyone else have the same problem?

CentOS7 and NFS

Hi, I need some help with NFSv4 setup/tuning. I have a dedicated nfs server (2 x E5-2620 8cores/16 threads each, 64GB RAM, 1x10Gb ethernet and 16x 8TB HDD) used by two servers and a small cluster (400 cores). All the servers are running CentOS 7, the cluster is running CentOS6. Time to time on the server I get: kernel: NFSD: client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx testing state ID with incorrect client ID And the client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx freeze whith: kernel: nfs: server xxxxx.legi.grenoble-inp.fr not responding, still trying kernel: nfs: server xxxxx.legi.grenoble-inp.fr OK kernel: nfs: server xxxxx.legi.grenoble-inp.fr not responding, still trying kernel: nfs: server xxxxx.legi.grenoble-inp.fr OK There is a discussion on RedHat7 support about this but only open to subscribers. Other searches with google do not provide useful information. Do you have an idea how to solve these freeze states ? More generally I would be really interested with some advice/tutorials to improve NFS performances in this dedicated context. There are so many [different] things about tuning NFS available on the web that I'm a little bit lost (the opposite of the previous question). So if some one has "the tutorial"...;-) Thanks Patrick

After update to 8 (2004) ... system is unbootable - UEFI Secure boot

Hi all, I updated a Dell XPS laptop from CentOS 8.1 (1911) to 8.2 (2004). Installed kernels are kernel-4.18.0-147.5.1.el8_1.x86_64 kernel-4.18.0-147.8.1.el8_1.x86_64 kernel-4.18.0-193.6.3.el8_2.x86_64 Unfortunately I can not boot into the latest kernel-4.18.0-193.6.3.el8_2.x86_64. After grub2 screen I only see following line: EFI stub: UEFI Secure Boot is enabled Booting into the older kernel is still possible. The above line appears and after that the normal kernel output scrolls over the screen (rhgb quiet disabled). Is the new kernel correctly signed? What can I do? -- Thanks Leon

pgbouncer.pid Permissions on CentOS 7

I’ve installed pgbouncer on CentOS7 and it’s reliant upon a .pid file: 2020-07-31 04:58:34.082 EDT [3682] DEBUG parse_ini_file: 'logfile' = '/var/log/pgbouncer/pgbouncer.log' 2020-07-31 04:58:34.082 EDT [3682] DEBUG parse_ini_file: 'logfile' = '/var/log/pgbouncer/pgbouncer.log' ok:1 2020-07-31 04:58:34.082 EDT [3682] DEBUG parse_ini_file: 'pidfile' = '/var/run/pgbouncer/pgbouncer.pid' 2020-07-31 04:58:34.082 EDT [3682] DEBUG parse_ini_file: 'pidfile' = '/var/run/pgbouncer/pgbouncer.pid' ok:1 However the service isn’t starting because the ownership of the parent directory, pgbouncer:pgbouncer results in some permissions issues: 2020-07-31 04:58:34.089 EDT [3682] FATAL could not open pidfile '/var/run/pgbouncer/pgbouncer.pid': Permission denied /var/run/ has special flushing behaviour which I want to retain, but I need to get around this permission issue. Changing ownership on this directory just results in an automatic ownership set by the service, so that’s not an option. - Is there another location that can achieve this? - Is there any other way to solve this? I can’t find anything online, other than the same permissions issue for .pid files in this location. Cheers, Bee

8.2.2004 Latest yum update renders machine unbootable

I am running an Intel x64 machine using UEFI to boot an SSD. Installing the latest yum update which includes grub2 and kernel 4.18.0-193.14.2.el8_2.x86_64 renders the machine unbootable, blank screen where grub should be, no error messages, just hangs. After some hours I managed to modify another bootable partition (containing older software) and boot it from there. After that, I found out it is a known problem. The main point of this message is to make people aware of the problem and suggest admins don't run 'yum update' until they understand the problem and have a fix at hand. I have a docker image based off centos:7 with java-11-openjdk-devel. It appears that the current java-11-openjdk-devel available in the CentOS 7 Yum repo is 1:11.0.7.10-4.el7_8 11.0.7 is reported to have some high vulnerabilities RHSA-2020:2969 that are fixed in 11.0.8, but 11.0.8 is not available for CentOS 7. 1. Is there a 11.0.8 update for java-11-openjdk-devel available for CentOS 7? 2. Is there a page like Ubuntu's CVE Tracker site where it shows the CVE, the package name, and the status (e.g. https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-security/cve/2020/CVE-2020-14578.html) 3. If 2 is no, How can I look up the status of a package that has been released by upstream on CentOS? (e.g. it's been released in Upstream, it's available in CentOS, it's pending backport for CentOS 7)

systemd syslog.target

I've noticed that there are several systemd unit files in CentOS 7 and 8 with the optionAfter=syslog.targetin the [Unit] section, but since systemd version 198 syslog.target has not existed.I deduce from this that "After=syslog.target" is ignored by systemd and can therefore be removed. Is this correct? I am writing some systemd unit files for our own services which previously used init.d scripts, so I want to ensure I'm not causing problems by omitting "After=syslog.target"ChrisSent from Samsung Mobile on O2
