SSD for Centos SWAP /tmp & /var/ partition

Has anyone actually used a SSD in a Centos setup? My little experiment with a s/h WD drive for /tmp and SWAP partitions kicked the bucket on Wednesday, when the poor WD drive caught the click-of-death. It was a s/h drive to start with and lasted about 4 months. But that was without the /var/log/ partition being written to it, as I mounted that back onto /var/log from the original drive. So I had to install another (WD) drive, and repartion it and rebuild my RPM package database, from the backed-up Packages file. That seems to be all OK now. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to use a new SSD for moving all the disk i/o to, that Linux likes to do so often. Plus putting SWAP onto a decent SSD should speed things up somewhat. Here's a short video of a laptop fitted with a SSD drive booting macOS, compared to a similar laptop booting from the standard HDD. The laptop with the SSD boots and loads some apps in 28 seconds. Issues booting centos7 [dracut is failing to enable centos/root, centos/swap LVs]

Hello, I'm having a strange problem booting a new centos7 installation. Below some background on this. [I have attached the tech details at the bottom of this message] I started a new CentOS7 installation on a VM, so far all good, o/s boots fine. Then I decided to increase VM disk size (initially was 10G) to 13G. Powered off the VM, increased the vhd via the hypervisor, booted from CentOS livecd, selected "recover my centos installation". Then I used the following sequence of commands to make the new vhd size "visible" to the o/s ... - ran fdisk /dev/sda and deleted partition 2. (This is the LVM partition where the o/s is stored. The first partition is /boot [xfs] partition *non lvm*.) - created a new partition with same starting sector as before deleting it, but a different ending sector (to reflect to the increased space). - set partition type to 8e (lvm), saved settings and exit. - ran pvresize and lvresize to make new space visible to the o/s.All good, I can see the space increase on 'lvdisplay centos/root'. - ran 'mount /dev/mapper/centos-root /mnt/root' to temporarily mount the o/s partition. - ran 'xfs_growfs /mnt/root' to resize the o/s fs to the new size. It was successful and I could actually chroot to the o/s and verify new disk size. - rebooted and tried to boot from hdd this time. Grub menu shows up and loads default kernel (3.10.0-862.9.1.el7.x86_64). - after initial kernel boot up process, booting continues to initrd and then it's where the problem starts... - looks like dracut has issues locating/enabling /dev/mapper/centos-root (lv) and as a result it cannot boot to the 'real' root fs (/). - while in dracut shell, I execute the following command sequence: 1. lvm lvchange -ay /dev/centos/root 2. lvm lvchange -ay /dev/centos/swap 3. ln -s /dev/mapper/centos-root /dev/root 4. exit ...and the o/s boots fine...so looks like the pv,vg,lv is detected properly while in initrd, but somehow dracut has difficulties enabling the root,swap LVs ? - While in o/s, I rebuild initrd by using: 'dracut -f -v -a lvm' Note, I have to use '-a lvm' as for some reason, if don't, the lvm utils (lvm,lvm_scan) are not being included to the initrd, not sure why this happens. After rebooting, same thing happens, I have to manually boot the system via dracut shell. I'm a bit stuck at this point, any clues what I'm doing wrong in here ? MATE 1.20 test build for CentOS 7 available

Hi everyone, There's been discussions in the past about updating MATE RPMs in EPEL-7: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1436260 https://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2019-August/173154.html (and lots of others...) As a proof-of-concept, I've written some scripts that clone specific commits from the Fedora master branches, and then runs a tool to re-apply RPM scriptlets that are required by EL7 but removed from the Fedora .spec files. The scripts are available at: https://github.com/gebailey/mate-rpms/tree/master/1.20/el7 There's also instructions there if you want to try upgrading to MATE 1.20 w/o rebuilding them yourself. If these packages work for others, perhaps we can revisit the idea of updating the epel7 branches of the Fedora git repos and submitting an official update. There's nothing here (yet) about building MATE 1.22 (which might require a newer gcc for EL7), or building anything on CentOS 8, but thought the CentOS 7 users might find this helpful. -Greg

Transition test report going from CentOS8 to Debian 10.

Sorry for the length.... I'm posting this here since this particular transition has been mentioned on-list as one possibility for a path forward for current CentOS Linux users. AlmaLinux, the Developer Subscription RHEL, Rocky, CentOS Stream, Springdale, upgrading to full RHEL; all these are also possibilities, too, and all have different strengths and weaknesses. The transition to Debian has a lot of strengths, including a long track-record of support (even if the support time for a particular release is shorter), a fully-open development model with no 'corporate overlord' that I know of, a large set of supported packages, and a huge community of developers and users. For the CentOS user the main weakness is having to learn a few areas of difference in the way the system is setup and maintained; of course, if a ten-year 'stable' timeframe is really that important to you the lack of that is also a weakness. So, last week I transitioned, as a test of sorts, my working CentOS 8 main laptop to Debian 10. I kept a complete backup of the C8 install should I wish to go back to it, and installed Buster to a new mSATA SSD, but ported the two SATA drives (Dell Precision M6700 - has an mSATA slot plus two SATA bays) straight over after making full backups. I posted a pretty complete rundown on the scientific linux users mailing list, so I won't recap it all here. The bottom line was the the transition was not any more difficult, really, than moving from CentOS 7 to CentOS 8. The software versions in Buster are pretty close to what is in CentOS 8, although I have yet to need any third-party repository (PPA) for anything I've needed to install. All the packages I have worked with so far have worked fine with a little bit of massaging. These include commercial (and costly) software such as Harrison Consoles' Mixbus32C, Qoppa's PDFStudio2019 Professional, and others. So if you were to decide that this is the route for you to take, it does work and I found it to be not nearly as hard as I had thought it might be. If you install GNOME 3 you get GNOME 3; it feels pretty much the same as a non-Classic CentOS GNOME 3, just with a different set of extensions installed by default. That's on the workstation. On the server side, I'm evaluating Proxmox for the virtualization solution, and so far I'm finding it to be a pretty easy migration. I'm using the 'non-subscription' repository, so this is a no-cost option. Even getting the box registered to our EMC Clariion SAN was relatively easy; EMC provides the Unisphere Server Utility for Linux x64 in RPM form; the latest I have is "ServerUtil-Linux-64-x86-en_US-1.0.55.1.0044-1.x86_64.rpm" (which is fairly old, but I did say Clariion arrays, so they're pretty old, too). Debian has provided the 'alien' tool for some time; after installing alien, a simple 'alien -i ServerUtil-Linux-64-x86-en_US-1.0.55.1.0044-1.x86_64.rpm' installed the EMC RPM in the correct place. Proxmox already included everything that serverutilcli requires; on a plain Buster install I had to install dm-multipath and the device mapper libraries and tools before serverutilcli would find the arrays; but it ran just like it did on CentOS 8 (and 7). I haven't decided whether to stay on Debian or not; too early to tell. I have time to test and evaluate. My CentOS 7 installs aren't goin anywhere, though, at least until late 2023. And I've registered for a Developer subscription of RHEL so that I can properly evaluate that option, too. This is the beauty of open source: we have OPTIONS.

What to do when a selinux policy doesn't work?

Hi, I'm getting log file entries about ejabberd not being able to remove files that were uploaded by client through the file upload facility of XMPP. With the help of audit2allow, I have already created and installed some selinux modules to solve such issues, and still files can't be expired. So I used grep '/srv/data/ejabberd' /var/log/audit/audit.log | audit2allow -w to find out what might cause this, and the answer is: type=AVC msg=audit(1606302910.314:2905): avc: denied { open } for pid=18687 comm="8_dirty_io_sche" path="/srv/data/ejabberd/[...]" dev="md100" ino=166 scontext=system_u:system_r:ejabberd_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_r:var_t:s0 tclass=file permissive=1 Was caused by: Unknown - would be allowed by active policy Possible mismatch between this policy and the one under which the audit message was generated. Possible mismatch between current in-memory boolean settings vs. permanent ones. I have reloaded the policies with 'semodule -R', and that didn't change anything. The files in question seem to have the correct attributes like: ls -laZ /srv/data/ejabberd/[...] -rw-r--r--. 1 ejabberd ejabberd system_u:object_r:var_t:s0 1384362 Nov 25 12:15 /srv/data/ejabberd/[...] Ejabberd is supposed to expire files when they are older than desired, and selinux prevents it. How can I solve this problem other than by disabling selinux or by deleting the files manually?

How to find out what's eating the bandwidth

Is there a program that will tell me what's eating the bandwidth on a lan? I'm thinking of something that would tell me that a.b.c.d is using so many mbps and a.b.c.e is using this many and so on. Or can just-another-computer-on-the-network actually see that sort of information? I don't know enough about the low level nuts and bolts of networking to know if it has that kind of access. I'm really just interested in volume of traffic per attached device rather than specific origin/destination information if that's easier to obtain. Prevent Anaconda from switching root and swap partition

Hi, More often than not, when installing CentOS, I choose manual partitioning and then apply the KISS principle, with a very simple partitioning scheme that looks more or less like this: * /boot partition: 500 MB, ext2 * swap partition: equivalent to amount of RAM * root partition: available space, ext4 Now when I do this, Anaconda insists on switching my swap and root partitions, so instead of this: * /dev/sda1: boot partition * /dev/sda2: swap partition * /dev/sda3: root partition ... I get this: * /dev/sda1: boot partition * /dev/sda2: root partition * /dev/sda3: swap partition Up until now this hasn't bothered me much. But for my needs right now it does, because I need my root partition to be at the end of the disk, so it can be expanded later on. Anyone knows how I can prevent Anaconda from switching my root and swap partitions? What I'm doing right now is switching to a text console with Ctrl-Alt-F5, manually partition using fdisk, switch back to Anaconda and then rescan the disk, but it's quite a PITA. RHEL/Centos 8 power off issue

Hello, I have a laptop, in a docking station. When running RHEL/Centos 7 I could shut it down and power it off by using 'shutdown -h now' In did a new install of Centos 8 (and also RHEL 8) and when I do a "shutdown -h now" it just reboots (behaves the same as if I'd do a reboot). Is that a known issue? thanks, Ron

KVM vs. incremental remote backups

Hi, Up until recently I've hosted all my stuff (web & mail) on a handful of bare metal servers. Web applications (WordPress, OwnCloud, Dolibarr, GEPI, Roundcube) as well as mail and a few other things were hosted mostly on one big machine. Backups for this setup were done using Rsnapshot, a nifty utility that combines Rsync over SSH and hard links to make incremental backups. This approach has become problematic, for several reasons. First, web applications have increasingly specific and sometimes mutually exclusive requirements. And second, last month I had a server crash, and even though I had backups for everything, this meant quite some offline time. So I've opted to go for KVM-based solutions, with everything split up over a series of KVM guests. I wrapped my head around KVM, played around with it (a lot) and now I'm more or less ready to go. One detail is nagging me though: backups. Let's say I have one VM that handles only DNS (base installation + BIND) and one other VM that handles mail (base installation + Postfix + Dovecot). Under the hood that's two QCOW2 images stored in /var/lib/libvirt/images. With the old "bare metal" approach I could perform remote backups using Rsync, so only the difference between two backups would get transferred over the network. Now with KVM images it looks like every day I have to transfer the whole image again. As soon as some images have lots of data on them (say, 100 GB for a small OwnCloud server), this quickly becomes unmanageable. I googled around quite some time for "KVM backup best practices" and was a bit puzzled to find many folks asking the same question and no real answer, at least not without having to jump through burning loops. Migrating to nvme and expand

I have older SATA disks (2 of them size 2T) in a software raid config running CentOS 7. /dev/md127 is / and xfs /dev/sda2 is swap /dev/md126 is /home and xfs I desire to get a new (single) NVME 4T disk. What is the correct way to copy the software raid to a single "new" NVME disk ? then expand the /home file system to All the remaining space? Thanks, Jerry

Problem with mail server: stop flooding with fail2ban ?

Hi, My main mail server is running CentOS 7 with Postfix and Dovecot. Last week I was surprised to see that Postfix had some troubles on this machine, according to Icinga. Q: can I use it in a similar configuration to stop Postfix from getting flooded and brought down to its knees? under CentOS 7 - I use "alias" like eth1:0 for an alias network. Remove the file restart network - and back to normal. Now I am trying to us NetworkManager. I can 'add' the network fine. however - when I remove the network nmcli connection delete "Wired connection 2" ipv4.addr 192.168.1.58/22 it remove BOTH address and removes the "Wired connection 2" config file - and it reverts to DHCP not the other static address I had associated with "Wired connection 2". how do I just remove the single ADDRESS I added as an alias ? not the whole thing ? I have Centos 6 machine that I use for a cups printer server. (Yes, I know, but it's working fine for what it's for at the moment.) My ISP lost its connection to the network that printer server is on. While the outside Internet service was unavailable I sent a print job to the printer on that server and nothing printed even though the print server and the machine I sent the job from are on the same lan and are actually connected to the same router. The job appeared to be sent from the originating machine (but timed out, as shown below), and running lpq and lpq -a on the server showed "no entries" (because it timed out for some reason). I did this a few times and even rebooted the server and always the same thing. Job sent, "no entries" on the server. The my ISP's connection came back and blammo! All of a sudden I got a ton of sheets printed, everything that I had been trying to print for the previous ten minutes. Here is what appears to be a relevant portion of the log on the machine that was sending the job to the print server: Mar 30 13:05:06 mutt cupsd[1443]: Started backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/implicit class (PID 951459) Mar 30 13:05:06 mutt cupsd[1443]: REQUEST localhost - root "POST /admin/ HTTP/1. 1" 200 245 CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer successful-ok Mar 30 13:05:07 mutt cupsd[1443]: Job completed. Mar 30 13:06:02 mutt cupsd[1443]: Job submission timed out. So what happened here? Why would cups care if it has a connection to the outside world when it's just printing a job sent to it from the local lan? Cloning bridged VMs : VirtualBox vs. KVM

Hi, (tl;dr : how can I clone a KVM-based bridged virtual machine and force a duplicate MAC address ?) Up until recently I've been using VirtualBox on my workstation to test various local setups. Usually I would setup a basic CentOS installation, and whenever I wanted to fiddle around, I would just clone that system and play around with it. So whenever I shot myself in the foot on that VM, I would simply erase it and start over again with a new clone. Think of it as a disposable VM. All my VMs under VirtualBox used bridged mode, so they were in the same network. And in my local proxy server, I have Dnsmasq that assigns static IP addresses and meaningful hostnames to these VMs. Here's what the corresponding lines in dnsmasq.conf look like: dhcp-host=08:00:27:00:00:01,suse-lp151,192.168.2.10 dhcp-host=08:00:27:00:00:02,suse-lp152,192.168.2.11 dhcp-host=08:00:27:00:00:03,ce7-server,192.168.2.12 dhcp-host=08:00:27:00:00:04,ce8-server,192.168.2.13 dhcp-host=08:00:27:00:00:05,ol7-server,192.168.2.14 dhcp-host=08:00:27:00:00:06,ol8-server,192.168.2.15 dhcp-host=08:00:27:00:00:07,rh7-server,192.168.2.16 dhcp-host=08:00:27:00:00:08,rh8-server,192.168.2.17 Over the last two weeks, I decided to migrate from VirtualBox to KVM even for local configurations and virtualized desktop configurations. So far, everything works nice... except one problem I can't seem to solve (yet). I'm using KVM in bridged mode, over a br0 bridge on my workstation. Like with VirtualBox, all my KVM virtual machines are part of my local 192.168.2.0/24 network. Unfortunately there is no way to simply make a perfect clone of a virtual machine using virt-manager. It insists on assigning my cloned VM a different MAC address. And whenever I want to manually create a NIC with the same MAC address as the original, Virtual Machine Manager tells me I can't do that. Same player shoot again. Now I know that is normally a good thing. You don't want MAC address conflicts in your network. But here's the thing: I don't intend to fire up both copies at once. As with VirtualBox, I only intend to use one VM at a time, for testing purposes. Now how can I "explain" this to Virtual Machine Manager without having to jump through burning loops ? yum versionlock vs priority

hi all, i could use some guidance in debugging an issue on centos 7.9 where "suddenly" yum refuses to install a package. the package has multiple version in 2 repos: highest version is in a repo with prio=5, the other lower versions are in a repo without any priorities set. we however require a specific version, so we use the versionlock plugin to lock it. repoquery --show-duplicates properly shows all versions. however, yum refuses to install this locked version. it says it can find the package (trying to install the package by name, and also by full version). when we remove the prio setting in this one repo it all works just fine. the odd thing is: we discovered this after a reinstall of a single host a few days ago, where we have a lot of other hosts with same setup without issues. there seem to have no updates of yum or anything related, so i'm a bit puzzled where this sudden change could come from. obvioulsy, it will turn out something did change, but i have no idea how to start finding the culprit. is there any documnetaiton that describes the precedence between yum plugins? is versionlock plugin always supposed to win over prio setting? hints/tips welcome. many thanks, stijn

fresh install of centos 7 and curl accessing some sites

Hi, I've run into an issue with fresh install of CentOS 7. I used CentOS-7-x86_64-NetInstall-2009.iso to bootup and one of the mirrors to finish the setup. When I first logged in, had to install something from gitlab and download failed with an error "curl: (35) TCP connection reset by peer" and while in verbose mode, curl reports that "NSS error -5961 (PR_CONNECT_RESET_ERROR)". When I go to existing CentOS system (same version, but installed much earlier), everything works as expected. I compared version of curl, nss and openssl -- they all match. Centos 8 host -> VMware host

Everyone, I am trying to move some Centos 7 guests off of a Centos 8 host to a VMware host machine. qemu-img is a great tool in kvm to convert the files from *.qcow2 to *.vmdk very easily with the command : qemu-img convert -f qcow2 -O vmdk *.qcow2 *.vmdk I have been able to easily move these files to the 'usb vmware' system with scp from the Centos 8 host to the VmWare host. (Interesting in that I could not get the scp in the VMware host to work). Unfortunately, I have not figured out how to import the files into VMware virtual machine yet. I can easily create a new virtual machine with a CentOS8 *.iso file which tells me that the Vmware host is working. I may have been looking in the wrong places for documentation, but so fare I have not been impressed with VMware's documentation to import pre-existing kvm guests. Do any of you have any tutorial links as to how to import these *.vmdk files into VMware? Thanks for your help!!!! Greg Ennis

XML parsing in shell script

I have a challenge I am interested in getting feedback on. I will on a regular basis download a series of data files from the web where the data is in XML-format. The format is known in advance but is different between the various data files. I then plan to extract the various data items ("elements?") from each data file, do some light formatting and then save desired parts of each original data file as a formatted CSV-file for later importing into a database. As the plan is to use a bash shell script using curl to get the files, I have begun looking at external XML parsers that I can call from my script, perhaps specify which elements I want, get the data back in some kind of bash data structure and finally format and save as CSV-files. There seems to be a number of XML parsers available but perhaps someone on the list has a recommendation for which one might suit my needs best? I should add that I am running CentOS 7. Thank you.

I need help from someone experienced with the CentOS bug tracking system. I gotta say it is one of the most complicated and imposing front ends I've ever seen. Could anyone familiar with it please file a bug on my behalf? Particulars: "CentOS 7.9.2009 DVD iso image too large" ISO image: CentOS-7-x86_64-DVD-2009.iso 4.7GB raw CD image Wed Nov 4 05:37:25 2020 Burners: Both K3B and Brasero Media: Both DVD-R and DVD+R single-layer disks iso image: 4,712,300,544 bytes User Anthony F McInerney advises Wikipedia says DVD-R capacity: 4,707,319,808 bytes (max) I have tried burning this same iso image on two different machines: a CentOS 7.9 server and a Fedora 33 laptop. Same failure on both. We need to ask the developers to make a re-spin that's about 5MB smaller. And before someone suggests it, the 2010-vintage server I'm trying to install CentOS on does not support booting from a thumb drive, so that option is not available. Hello, I wonder if you could help. I have a requirement to load CentOS 7.3 on to a server. I have the distribution on a bootable USB key. CentOS boots to the first menu but when I select the option to install almost immediately I get the error below: NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#82 stuck for 23s! [system-udevd:1221] The above error is output every 23s This is a repeatable error condition. When I load CentOS 7.4 on to the server I get no problems. When I load the above CentOS 7.3 distribution on to an older server I get no problems. Has anyone every seen the NMI watchdog error and found a resolution. Supergrub will boot some .iso files. In the past, I have directly booted a partition I made from a fedora .iso file. Another option *might* be making another .iso file. Mount the file. Copy its filesystem to a directory. Remove some stuff you can live without. Make another .iso file using directions for making a bootable disk. After setting up /etc/samba/smb.conf and running "testparm" in CentOS 7.9.2011, I have noticed that the list of parameters echoed back for the [global] section do not match those in the smb.conf file. Is this normal? Hello I'm using ProxMox as virtualization, from verson 2.x. For around 20 servers (most of them are Centos machines) for different services (Zimbra, Apache, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, EDB, ..) and also for MS servers (AD, Exchange, fileserver, MSSql Express, .). They all are running on 5-6 HW servers, different brands and all of them are pretty old. As backup use Synology NAS and nfs with 10gb fc to FC switch. So speed for backup really is not a problem. I slowly moving sata disks to ssd, in same hardware and this is really big advantage in speed. In time of changing disks move virtual machines to other hypervisors. HW Raid5 is really nice with ssd. In 3 years of changing to ssd disks only one fail, but system running and change of disk without downtime ... If I want to test, move, . backup and restore is not an issue. For this year plan is to put one NAS to other location for disaster . ProxMox and software defined storage on 4-5 machines I think for us is the best solution. In point of maintaining there is no problem with upgrading from one release to other - now is version 6.x. Only issue is probably my knowledge how to put this together. All the best Blaz

Restore mails using Thunderbird

Hi, One of my clients is running CentOS 7 on his workstation. He's using Mozilla Thunderbird with an IMAP account at Infomaniak to manage his mails. Two days ago he shot himself in the foot by playing around with Thunderbird's auto-cleaning features. He enabled "delete all mails older than 60 days" and managed to wipe most of his 13 GB of archived mails. Fortunately his local network has a local backup server (running CentOS 7 and Rsnapshot), which keeps daily snapshots of his workstation. Thunderbird keeps all configuration and mail in ~/.thunderbird, so I simply renamed this to ~/.thunderbird.bak, searched for the latest correct version of ~/.thunderbird three days ago and restored that. Now here's what happens. 1. When starting Thunderbird all the old mail folders and messages appear correctly. So it looks good. 2. After a few minutes most of the messages disappear. Not good. I don't know exactly what's going on here, but it looks like the server is trying to keep the upper hand here by restoring the last (wrong) state of things. Any suggestions ? Hi I was reading about how unlock encrypted root partition from remote (unattended). I'd like asking what is compatible way for this in centos and commonly used by administrators? I think most simple is install dropbear in initramfs for allow remote SSH and manual enter passphrase. I find many HOWTO for that on debian/ubuntu, but nothing for centos. Bare metal vs. virtualization: Proxmox + Ceph + CentOS ?

Hi, Last week I had a disaster which took me a few unnerving days to repair. My main Internet-facing server is a bare-metal installation with CentOS 7. It hosts four dozen web sites (or web applications) based on WordPress, Dolibarr, OwnCloud, GEPI, and quite a number of mail accounts for ten different domains. On sunday afternoon this machine had a hardware failure and proved to be unrecoverable. The good news is, I always have backups of everything. In that case, I have a dedicated backup server (in a different datacenter in a different country). I’m using Rsnapshot for incremental backups, so I had all data: websites, mail accounts, database dumps, configurations, etc. Now here’s the problem: it took me three and a half days of intense work to restore everything and get everything running again. Three and a half days of downtime is quite a stretch. As far as I understand, my mistake was to use a bare-metal installation and not a virtualized solution where I could simply restore a snapshot of a VM. Correct me if I’m wrong. Now I’m doing a lot of thinking and searching. Proxmox and Ceph look quite promising. From what I can tell, the idea is not to use a big server but a cluster of many small servers, and aggregate them like you would do with hard disks in a RAID 10 array for example, only you would do this for the whole system. And then install one or several CentOS 7 VMs on top of this setup. Any advice from the pros before I dive head first into the documentation? You can load-balance your network streams (connections), so that you'll utilize the bandwidth of two physical links in sum, but each individual network stream is going to traverse just one physical link, and will never be faster than whichever link is selected for that stream when it is initiated.

Disk read io very high, but no process perform io read

We have experienced a very weird problem. The load of the server machine is very high. We use "pidstat" and find that the disk read io is very high. But the processes running on this server do not perform any disk read operation. We also noticed that when we execute "top" command, for most of processes, the values in "SHR" column are zero. Compared with other normal servers, we found that by executing "free -m", the result shows that the buff/cache value in this server is lower than the value of other normal servers. We also found that there were lots of major page faults by executing "ps -o majflt,minflt". Swap is not enabled on this server. What could be the reason for this issue? The centos version:CentOS Linux release 7.3.1611 kernel version:3.10.0-693.21.1.std7a.el7.0.x86_64

R730xd & SD card identfication

Everyone, We have migrated a platform to a Centos 8 host using kvm guest machines Recently I tried to copy one of the guests to the external SD card on the back of the Dell R730xd, but I have not been able to get the Centos 8 host to recognize the SD card. I can use DRAC interface of the R730xd to see that the SD card is being recognized and the status of the external SD slot is turned from inactive to active when the card is inserted. I have used lsblk, fdisk -l, and 'dmesg | tail' none of which demonstrate that the Centos 8 host is recognizing the SD card. You help would be appreciated. Thanks !! -- Greg Ennis

SHR in top command is zero and major page fault is frequent

Recently, I found that many processes in our server experienced high frequency of major page faults. The disk IO on this server is also very high. I also noticed that when I execute "top" command, for some processes, the value in SHR column became zero. when I restart these processes, the values of SHR became non-zero again. What could be the reason for frequent major page fault? Is there any connection between zero SHR and major page fault?

Running CentOS Linux release 8.3.2011 According to uname my kernel is 4.18.0-240.10.1.el8_3.x86_64, but when I check which version of kernel-devel is available, yum info kernel-devel I get that Source : kernel-4.18.0-240.15.1.el8_3.src.rpm Why is the version of kernel-devel available for my kernel based on a newer kernel?

mkdtemp on CentOS 7

I am trying to compile DeltaChat in a CentOS 7 docker container and at one stage have to run: npm install --global electron but the above fails, seemingly because CentOS 7 does not have 'mkdtemp', nor have I found it in a repository. I had previously used: npm install electron --save-dev which installs fine but does not seem to use mkdtemp. yum provides mkdtemp ends up not finding anything but perhaps someone knows this better?

proper recipe for local mirror

Hi! What is the proper solution for a local mirror for centos 7 (or oven 8) repositories? trying with rsync, while the packages are downloaded but the repodata is not and is actually impossible to be used by clients. while i try to recreate the repodata with createrepo -C -d --workers=4 ${repo} where ${repo} is the sync destination where it contains %arch/{Packages,repodata} directories the clients throw errors like: <LOCAL_MIRROR>/mirrors/centos/7/updates/x86_64/repodata/51d63b04c8bb74c5d9f09ae65f763f319a69492d9a8fac5ea0bf9b63bf347c5c-primary.sqlite.bz2: [Errno 14] HTTP Error 404 - Not Found What am i missing? tracking samba changes

Good morning everyone. This morning when I came in my boss said that he doesn't have access to the R: drive, which is a samba share to a folder called RP. I looked in /etc/group and his username was not in there. He's had access to this group for years, since before I was at the company. Yesterday I added a new employee to two other groups, saved the change and exited, and I took out an old username out of a few groups but I did not touch my boss's username at all. Is there any kind of trace log that shows changes to a group or to /etc/group that tracks / logs all individual changes that I can trace back to what might have happened that's turned on in the system, to show changes to /etc/group, or does that only get captured through an outside backup?
