Memory vs. Display Card

Since memory has become quite cheap lately I decided to move from 2 GB to 6. When I installed the memory every thing was fine until I went to run level 5. At that point the screen turned to garbage and the system froze. Is there a way to fix this so I can use the memory I bought? Do I need a new display card? SSD for Centos SWAP /tmp & /var/ partition

Has anyone actually used a SSD in a Centos setup? My little experiment with a s/h WD drive for /tmp and SWAP partitions kicked the bucket on Wednesday, when the poor WD drive caught the click-of-death. It was a s/h drive to start with and lasted about 4 months. But that was without the /var/log/ partition being written to it, as I mounted that back onto /var/log from the original drive. So I had to install another (WD) drive, and repartion it and rebuild my RPM package database, from the backed-up Packages file. That seems to be all OK now. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to use a new SSD for moving all the disk i/o to, that Linux likes to do so often. Plus putting SWAP onto a decent SSD should speed things up somewhat. Here's a short video of a laptop fitted with a SSD drive booting macOS, compared to a similar laptop booting from the standard HDD. The laptop with the SSD boots and loads some apps in 28 seconds. Issues booting centos7 [dracut is failing to enable centos/root, centos/swap LVs]

Hello, I'm having a strange problem booting a new centos7 installation. Below some background on this. [I have attached the tech details at the bottom of this message] I started a new CentOS7 installation on a VM, so far all good, o/s boots fine. Then I decided to increase VM disk size (initially was 10G) to 13G. Powered off the VM, increased the vhd via the hypervisor, booted from CentOS livecd, selected "recover my centos installation". Then I used the following sequence of commands to make the new vhd size "visible" to the o/s ... - ran fdisk /dev/sda and deleted partition 2. (This is the LVM partition where the o/s is stored. The first partition is /boot [xfs] partition *non lvm*.) - created a new partition with same starting sector as before deleting it, but a different ending sector (to reflect to the increased space). - set partition type to 8e (lvm), saved settings and exit. - ran pvresize and lvresize to make new space visible to the o/s.All good, I can see the space increase on 'lvdisplay centos/root'. - ran 'mount /dev/mapper/centos-root /mnt/root' to temporarily mount the o/s partition. - ran 'xfs_growfs /mnt/root' to resize the o/s fs to the new size. It was successful and I could actually chroot to the o/s and verify new disk size. - rebooted and tried to boot from hdd this time. Grub menu shows up and loads default kernel (3.10.0-862.9.1.el7.x86_64). - after initial kernel boot up process, booting continues to initrd and then it's where the problem starts... - looks like dracut has issues locating/enabling /dev/mapper/centos-root (lv) and as a result it cannot boot to the 'real' root fs (/). - while in dracut shell, I execute the following command sequence: 1. lvm lvchange -ay /dev/centos/root 2. lvm lvchange -ay /dev/centos/swap 3. ln -s /dev/mapper/centos-root /dev/root 4. exit ...and the o/s boots fine...so looks like the pv,vg,lv is detected properly while in initrd, but somehow dracut has difficulties enabling the root,swap LVs ? - While in o/s, I rebuild initrd by using: 'dracut -f -v -a lvm' Note, I have to use '-a lvm' as for some reason, if don't, the lvm utils (lvm,lvm_scan) are not being included to the initrd, not sure why this happens. After rebooting, same thing happens, I have to manually boot the system via dracut shell. I'm a bit stuck at this point, any clues what I'm doing wrong in here ? MATE 1.20 test build for CentOS 7 available

Hi everyone, There's been discussions in the past about updating MATE RPMs in EPEL-7: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1436260 https://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2019-August/173154.html (and lots of others...) As a proof-of-concept, I've written some scripts that clone specific commits from the Fedora master branches, and then runs a tool to re-apply RPM scriptlets that are required by EL7 but removed from the Fedora .spec files. The scripts are available at: https://github.com/gebailey/mate-rpms/tree/master/1.20/el7 There's also instructions there if you want to try upgrading to MATE 1.20 w/o rebuilding them yourself. If these packages work for others, perhaps we can revisit the idea of updating the epel7 branches of the Fedora git repos and submitting an official update. There's nothing here (yet) about building MATE 1.22 (which might require a newer gcc for EL7), or building anything on CentOS 8, but thought the CentOS 7 users might find this helpful. -Greg

Transition test report going from CentOS8 to Debian 10.

Sorry for the length.... I'm posting this here since this particular transition has been mentioned on-list as one possibility for a path forward for current CentOS Linux users. AlmaLinux, the Developer Subscription RHEL, Rocky, CentOS Stream, Springdale, upgrading to full RHEL; all these are also possibilities, too, and all have different strengths and weaknesses. The transition to Debian has a lot of strengths, including a long track-record of support (even if the support time for a particular release is shorter), a fully-open development model with no 'corporate overlord' that I know of, a large set of supported packages, and a huge community of developers and users. For the CentOS user the main weakness is having to learn a few areas of difference in the way the system is setup and maintained; of course, if a ten-year 'stable' timeframe is really that important to you the lack of that is also a weakness. So, last week I transitioned, as a test of sorts, my working CentOS 8 main laptop to Debian 10. I kept a complete backup of the C8 install should I wish to go back to it, and installed Buster to a new mSATA SSD, but ported the two SATA drives (Dell Precision M6700 - has an mSATA slot plus two SATA bays) straight over after making full backups. I posted a pretty complete rundown on the scientific linux users mailing list, so I won't recap it all here. The bottom line was the the transition was not any more difficult, really, than moving from CentOS 7 to CentOS 8. The software versions in Buster are pretty close to what is in CentOS 8, although I have yet to need any third-party repository (PPA) for anything I've needed to install. All the packages I have worked with so far have worked fine with a little bit of massaging. These include commercial (and costly) software such as Harrison Consoles' Mixbus32C, Qoppa's PDFStudio2019 Professional, and others. So if you were to decide that this is the route for you to take, it does work and I found it to be not nearly as hard as I had thought it might be. If you install GNOME 3 you get GNOME 3; it feels pretty much the same as a non-Classic CentOS GNOME 3, just with a different set of extensions installed by default. That's on the workstation. On the server side, I'm evaluating Proxmox for the virtualization solution, and so far I'm finding it to be a pretty easy migration. I'm using the 'non-subscription' repository, so this is a no-cost option. Even getting the box registered to our EMC Clariion SAN was relatively easy; EMC provides the Unisphere Server Utility for Linux x64 in RPM form; the latest I have is "ServerUtil-Linux-64-x86-en_US-1.0.55.1.0044-1.x86_64.rpm" (which is fairly old, but I did say Clariion arrays, so they're pretty old, too). Debian has provided the 'alien' tool for some time; after installing alien, a simple 'alien -i ServerUtil-Linux-64-x86-en_US-1.0.55.1.0044-1.x86_64.rpm' installed the EMC RPM in the correct place. Proxmox already included everything that serverutilcli requires; on a plain Buster install I had to install dm-multipath and the device mapper libraries and tools before serverutilcli would find the arrays; but it ran just like it did on CentOS 8 (and 7). I haven't decided whether to stay on Debian or not; too early to tell. I have time to test and evaluate. My CentOS 7 installs aren't goin anywhere, though, at least until late 2023. And I've registered for a Developer subscription of RHEL so that I can properly evaluate that option, too. This is the beauty of open source: we have OPTIONS.

Mirrors Sync

I am using the getssl script to add a certificate to my server. The script is automatically adding a SANS www.myserver.com when I do not have a www.myserver.com - just simply the myserver.com How can I tell getssl to "not add that SANS" entry ? Thanks, Jerry

kmod removal

Sometime ago I thought I needed kmod-wl to support a new wireless card. Turns out I didn't need to do that. Now I'd like to remove kmod entirely. But when I try I get this: [root@ws1 etc]# dnf remove kmod Error: Problem: The operation would result in removing the following protected packages: systemd-udev (try to add '--skip-broken' to skip uninstallable packages) I am sure I don't want to remove systemd-udev, so I am a loss. I did disable akmods: systemctl disable akmods But I still see that kmod-wl is built each time the kernal is updated. Any suggestions where I can find out how to remove kmod. Note that searching the internet only brings me info on removing kmod-nvidia, and mostly on ubuntu, and they are no help because mostly what they discuss is how get back to neuveau. Even docs I've found that discuss how to install kmod on CentOS say nothing about removal. Emmett

non-functioning printer

In an attempt to diagnose a friend's HP Deskjet D1420, I'm running a Centos 6.10 LiveDVD. The readily visible symptom is that it will accept a job and claim to be printing it, but nothing ever gets printed, not even a test page. The same happens on her Ubuntu system. I recently learned that a blinking power light means that the printer is complaining about something. Where on a Deskjet D1420 could an error message possibly appear? Does it mean this message in /var/cups/error_log? CentOS IRC channels moving to irc.libera.chat

TL;DR: #centos and #centos-* are moving to libera.chat Over the past few days, there has been some upheaval on the Frenode IRC network, resulting in a number of the staff members quitting and starting a new IRC network. I wont attempt to explain all the details here, but you can read more at https://kline.sh which also links to other sources. The various ops have discussed the situation, and we intend to migrate all of the various #centos-* channels from Freenode over to irc.libera.chat over the coming days. This will take time, since libera is still spinning up, and some servers are moving from one network to the other. As libera is still in the early stages of setup, you may have significantly more timeouts/disconnects, netsplits and other issues for now. Until the new network is fully stable, we'll all continue to be present in the Freenode chanels. Please bring further questions to the IRC channels (on either network).

Trying to build enca

Hi, I want to get vlc or mplayer to work on CentOS 8. For this I need enca to beinstalled. So I took it from Fedora 31 and tried to build the rpm. Using Cgroups in CentOS-7

Hi, I want to limit CPUQuota and Memory using "Cgroups". After reading some documents, it seems I need to modify "user.slice" systemd file adding "CPUQuota=25%" (for example) but, after it, if I run a "stress" with other user (not "root"), stress process takes 100% CPU. I have noticed that rebooting system non-root user has % CPU limited... but also root... so is it possible to configure that limits to all users but non root? Thanks.

I am attempting to create a multiple domain email server using postfix and cyrus-imap on CentOS Stream 8. It will includes a web back end similar to cyradm. Now I am stuck on mysql or mariadb support for pam. I am not able to find a pam_mysql rpm that will install on CentOS 8. I have a previous version working on CentOS 7. On CentOS 7 I am using pam_mysql 1:0.7-0.20.rc1.fc23 and all is working and has been for a number of years. I found pam_mysql-0.8.1-0.6.fc32.x86_64.rpm, but when I attempt to install it, it says it needs libcrypt.so.1 and it appears CentOS Stream has libcrypt.so.2 Any pointers either where to find pam_mysql, or some other solutions, for CentOS Stream 8? Note that I have epel-release installed and enabled, though epel-playground is disabled, and I am using Remi's repos to install php 7.4.

CentOS 7 on a new Dell Precision

I am trying to install CentOS 7 on a Dell Precision 3640 and am having some driver problems. I had to use kmod-e1000e from ElReo enable networking on the: 00:1f.6 Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection (11) I219-LM [8086:0d4c] I still don't have graphics. When starting Gnome, it shows the graphic screen briefly but reverts to the text login. Weird localectl behavior under CentOS 7

Hi, On a fresh CentOS 7 installation using Français/France as regional parameters in the installer, here's what localectl looks like: [microlinux@linuxbox ~]$ localectl System Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8 VC Keymap: ch-fr X11 Layout: ch X11 Variant: fr Now I'd like to have my system messages in english. So I set the system language accordingly: $ sudo localectl set-locale LANG=en_US.utf8 Things seem to look OK now: [microlinux@linuxbox ~]$ localectl System Locale: LANG=en_US.utf8 VC Keymap: ch-fr X11 Layout: ch X11 Variant: fr Except when I display my LANG variable, it's still fr_FR.UTF-8 for normal users... but en_US.utf8 for root. This looks like inconsistent or buggy behavior to me. Any suggestions on how to change the default system locale LANG so that it's en_US.utf8 for everybody *without* having to jump through burning loops and putting it in everybody's ~/.bashrc ? getssl was working stopped

Hi All - I am using getssl on CentOS 7. It have been working fine since Feb 17th and just stopped. My script: getssl -u -a -q getssl: for some reason could not reach http://MY_NAME/.well-known/acme-challenge/lL_ublhWh3fnmbXhhh3BR3bdnjHoMFAgT… - please check it manually So I did check it manually from another machine - it works fine: curl http://MY_NAME/.well-known/acme-challenge/lL_ublhWh3fnmbXhhh3BR3bdnjHoMFAgT… lL_ublhWh3fnmbXhhh3BR3bdnjHoMFAgTimTvZUTLQM.tIS27xF0xtz7YHES31MATofXyCeyfqttq7B_YBYZetI So it works fine. I then thought perhaps a firewall issue. So I "systemctl stop firewalld", redid the getssl -u -a -q command above - and I get the same error. How do I see/tell what its not liking ? Thanks, Jerry

systemd and 'Stale file handle' errors?

I have a CentOS 7 system where I needed to restart chronyd - but the systemctl restart failed with the error: systemd[1]: Starting NTP client/server... systemd[43578]: Failed at step NAMESPACE spawning /usr/sbin/chronyd: Stale file handle systemd[1]: chronyd.service: control process exited, code=exited status=226 Turns out there are a couple of Stale NFS file handles from fuse mounts (related to gvfsd) of sub directories under an NFS mounted home directory server - but the home directory for the user in this case, no longer exist (user has left) However, I have no idea why these 'Stale file handles' prevent a service being started by systemd ? In this case, chronyd has nothing to do with NFS mounted user home directories - so shouldn't really care ? I have tried everything I can think of to clear these stale mounts, but with no luck Does anyone know why systemd complains about unconnected 'Stale file handles' - and is there any way I can tell systemctl to start a service regardless of these 'errors' ? Rebooting the host will be a last resort (the system is used by many users) - but in the meantime, I've manually started the /usr/sbin/chronyd binary directly, which runs fine Thanks James Pearson

cups, stalling the transfer of printed files from the local machines to the cups print server

Everyone, I have been having some problems with our cups printing service for the last 4 months. I have a gateway machine that holds the printer information and is the print server. The other machines on the network use cups and cups-browsed that are set up to spool the print jobs to the gateway and then the gateway sends the data stream to the respective printers. The problem I have is that on any of the local machines the print jobs stall. I can run lpstat lpt6 for instance which gives me the listing of the stalled print jobs, but I am not seeing error messages in the logs either on the local machine or on the gateway print server. In doing some google searching I found that there was a problem with gh ghostscript-9.07-31.el7_6.10.x86_64 and ghostscript-cups-9.07- 31.el7_6.10.x86_64 that was apparently fixed. I am running Centos 7.9 that is fully updated with gs 9.25 on both the local machines and the gateway. The problem is intermittent and appears with various file types pdf, ps, pcl, and txt. I have not been able to identify any specific or consistent association. If any of you have had this problem I would sure appreciate your help. Thanks in advance !!!! -- Greg Ennis

Hello, I have an accesspoint, that I connected to one ethernetport, the ap has ip 192.168.67.6, the port 192.168.67.1 I want to forward/route traffic for anything in 192.168.66.0 to go to that access point, and from the ap to the other port. What is the best way to do that? I tried: sudo sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 sudo firewall-cmd --direct --add-rule ipv4 filter FORWARD 0 -o eno1 -i enp0s20u4u1 -j ACCEPT sudo firewall-cmd --direct --add-rule ipv4 filter FORWARD 0 -o enp0s20u4u1 -i eno1 -j ACCEPT but that doesn't seem to work. thanks, Ron
