Waiting for CentOS to thaw....

Hello list, I've put CentOS 6.3 x86_64 on my desktop, replacing Fedora 17 x86_64. This is the first time I'm using CentOS on a desktop, so far only on the servers. The problem is with thawing from hibernation. Time from turning on the hibernated machine to reaching the login prompt is not that of an issue, although sometimes it can take a while (significantly more than with Fedora). The problem is after I log in. It appears that none of the running programs will have thawed until I click their tabs in the taskbar, when the disk crunching begin and the program is unresponsive for up to a minute or two until it loads up from disk I guess, regardless of how much I wait between login and clicking a tab int taskbar. The biggest problem is with Firefox. I keep several tabs open and it takes literally minutes for it to become responsive. Even the terminal takes several seconds. During that time the window does not render except it's title bar and outer border. This is on the very same hardware (btw, it's AMD Phenom II X2, 4GB of RAM) where Fedora was running just a few weeks ago. Help? -- .oO V Oo. NFSv4 on CentOS 5.5

Hi, What is the magic juju that I have to put in /etc/sysconfig/autofs to get autofs to default to using NFSv4, rather than NFSv3, for mounting file systems? I don't want to place these flags into the automount maps themselves because we have a varied network with Sun, CentOS, RedHat and Macintosh systems, and the flags that have to get added to automount maps (which we distribute centrally through LDAP) are different for each OS. So, I'd prefer to specify the local machine options in /etc/sysconfig/autofs rather than in the global automount map. Virtual Machine Manager Centos 6

I upgrade to CentOS6 from 5. The new (well, for me at least) virt-manager is much changed with respect to the one in 5. I miss cpu usage percentage and memory usage (both in percentage and the absolute amount). Is there a way the get this information quickly in an overview? I just want to have an idea of how much memory is consumed by the virtual machines and if there is enough free for a new machine. This information and the cpu info I need to decide if a machine should be migrated to another host. When I used Xen in the past, it was easy. xm list just showed a column with memory. Then I went over to KVM and could only use virsh list. Or virsh dominfo, but that is per virtual host. So since then simply started virt-manager. Theo

An ipmitool question

We have some new blades, and last night we got a bunch of messages about CPU temp exceeding threshold, throttling CPU. Running ipmitool sel shows nothing. ipmitool sdr list shows me current values, nothing special. First question: why would high temps not show up in the SEL? Second: among the things I see list are <...> 10-VR P1 | 56 degrees C | ok 11-VR P2 | 46 degrees C | ok <...> Does anyone know what the numbers mean, if anything, and what VR means? mark

yum install make does not work

I try to install make (should be present in base): yum install make Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, refresh-packagekit, security Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile * base: mirrors.supportex.net * epel: mirror.nl.leaseweb.net * extras: mirrors.supportex.net * rpmforge: archive.cs.uu.nl * updates: mirrors.supportex.net Setting up Install Process No package make available. Error: Nothing to do This is a fresh install of CentOS6 (starting with a minimal install). All repositories seem to be working. I issued a yum clean and even removed the cache manually. A machine with a similar setup works as expected (yum remove make;yum install make). This problem prevents me from installing group server-platform. Since I started with a core installation by accident (wanted a Desktop) I simply Googled for the list of groups needed: Default grouplist: base core debugging directory-client java-platform network-file-system-client server-platform fonts print-client basic-desktop desktop-debugging desktop-platform general-desktop graphical-admin-tools input-methods legacy-x x11 internet-applications internet-browser office-suite remote-desktop-clients I was able to install all these groups except server-platform. And this boils down to not being able to install make. Nvidia forcedeth stops working

I just installed CentOS 6.3 on a Tyan motherboard and the NIC stopped talking after about 2 days of operation. It's connected to a Cisco 2950 switch. /var/log/messages has this in it: nv_stop_tx: TransmitterStatus remained busy I simply did an "ifdown eth0" and "ifup eth0" to bring it back to life again. I think I have this issue: <http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=18183> Is this a regression? Any suggestions on what I can try here?

yum vs. freenx

Is there any way (besides being awake when you do it...) to keep freenx updates from killing yum mid-transaction if you run the update in a freenx session? Normally I ssh in from a session on a different host but sometimes forget... -- Les Mikeselll lesmikesell(a)gmail.com
