ip6tables REJECT target 3s timeout

Hi, I am trying to get ipv6 firewall running. I did a very simple ip6tables rules and noticed very long running yum updates. I think that happened because firewall is dropping outgoing packets to port 80. Well, I thought to mitigate the issue and changed outgoing from drop to reject. Now I try manually # strace telnet 2a02:180:ffff:1::551f:b966 80 ... connect(3, {sa_family=AF_INET6, sin6_port=htons(80), inet_pton(AF_INET6, "2a02:180:ffff:1::551f:b966", &sin6_addr), sin6_flowinfo=0, sin6_scope_id=0}, 28 3 second delay ) = -1 ECONNREFUSED (Connection refused) ... The ECONNREFUSED is quite expected of course, but what is not expected that the connect syscall lasts 3 seconds. This 3 second delay is not happening with a equivalent telnet to a IPv4 address. Slow login to system without internet connection

Hi. For a long time I am puzzled why, when internet connection is gone (beyond first router, outside of subnet) SSH (and telnet?) connection is drastically slowed. Same behavior, but less impacted is observed when system boots without working internet connection, and I am not sure, but I think even access to SAMBA fileshares can be/is affected. Affected systems are mostly production servers, and too spaced apart in time to be able to point a finger in something I am doing wrong. I have not had time to gather more facts, I always forget/don;t have time, so I will only focus on definite SSH issue on CentOS 6.3, although I have seen same with 5.x. 1 server in question is set in following maner: [root@chiron ~]# cat /etc/networks default 0.0.0.0 loopback 127.0.0.0 link-local 169.254.0.0 [root@chiron ~]# cat /etc/sysconfig/network NETWORKING=yes NTPSERVERARGS=iburst HOSTNAME=chiron.example.com [root@chiron ~]# cat /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4 chiron.example.com chiron ::1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost6 localhost6.localdomain6 chiron.example.com chiron Does it have anything to do with /etc/hosts file not having row with used IP address, or is problem somewhere else? cannot install glibc.i686 on x86_64

I cannot install glibc.i686 on a x86_64 system because I get Error: Missing Dependency: glibc-common = 2.5-81 is needed by package glibc-2.5-81.i686 (base) glibc-common.x86_64 is installed, but it's apparently looking for i686. There's indeed no glibc-common for i686. There's also glibc.i386 and glibc-common.i386 available, but I think I don't need them. I have other x86_64 systems that have an installed glibc.i686 and no glibc.i386 and glibc-common.i386. I don't remember how I did that, probably on first install. How do I get glibc.i686 with yum on the system? Kai

Dell Lattitude E5430 -- split screen

Dear All, I installed CentOs on a brand new Dell Lattitude E5430. I did a minimal install, then did a "yum groupinstall Desktop" and I installed xorg-x11-drv-intel.i686. Also, I installed a i686 CentOs on a 64bit system, thinking because it has 4Gb or ram, It makes no difference. The screen is split top to bottom on the left hand side. This was quickly solved by adding "nomodeset" to the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst, however now I can't add an external monitor or beamer. Next I ran " Xorg -configure" and switched between vesa and intel driver, but the only thing that clears the spit screen so far is nomodeset. Here is some hardware info: *-display description: VGA compatible controller product: 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 2 bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0 version: 09 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: msi pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=i915 latency=0 resources: irq:28 memory:f6c00000-f6ffffff memory:e0000000-efffffff(prefetchable) iopor t:f000(size=64) I googled this and found some posts ( not with Centos ) from people reporting this solved by updating BIOS and adapting all sorts of settings. How to prevent host boot problems with virtual client disk?

I added one new disk to my Centos5 machine and I want to dedicate this disk to one of my virtual machines (also Centos5). After I added the (empty) disk the machine starts up fine and identified the disk as /dev/sdd It makes we wander what might happen to the host during a future (re)boot. The new disk will get a partition table and logical volumes, all which should be private to the client. The (KVM) host however will also see this disk during boot. My host volume group has a non standard name to prevent collision with the volume group name of the client (VolGroup00 for instance). I know I can even ignore the client group all together on the host. Now I am afraid that during boot time the host sees /dev/sdd as the first disk and tries to boot from it (bios update/reset for instance). Is this a real risk? My question is thus, how can I prevent that this (physical) client disk can be used for booting by the host without messing with the bios/cables? Should I first partition the disk and give one partition to the client (the disk than has a second disk layout stored on this partition). A similar thing can be done with a logical volume, but is this wise? Theo

Centos 6 Server has no GUI

I believe I have the exact answer to "Centos 6 Server has no GUI" but I don't see how to attach my answer to that thread. I am running in Virtual Box on a Windows machine. When I changed my memory available from ½ Gb to 1 Gb , and my video memory to 24Mb, my installation script went from an interface reminiscent of MS-DOS in the 80's to a nice GUI installation, and my number of packages installed went from 200 and some to 1400 and some. Apparently, the installation identifies what your box is capable of, and installs only what's appropriate. And doesn't tell you! Regards, Rick

Centos 5 mock seems to be broken

The mock package updated today on our build server, and mock suddenly started to fail. The new version uses "try .. finally", which isn't available in python24. Anyone else seeing this?
