8139 dropping packets

I have a CentOS 5.8 box that is dropping packets (just from ping). The network is 8139 RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ Rev 10 Adding the parameters "pci=noacpi acpi=off " has helped but it still happens. Is there something else that helps the network not drop packets? Thanks, jerry

Sound Stutters and Sputters then dies

Hey Y'all, Recently my sound has been misbehaving. The issue exists when I play sound using Rhythmbox, Totem Movie Player, or even Youtube video in Firefox or Chrome. The sound stutters and drops out. Sounds very rough. On Youtube the sound will eventually just die and can not be restarted until the browser is shut down and restarted. I've had issues related to Repo Forge packages in the past but there are no Repo Forge packages on my system. Why portmap is needed for NFSv4 in CentOS6

Hi all, I have setup a CentOS6.3 x86_64 host to act as a nfs server. According to RHEL6 docs, portmap is not needed when you use NFSv4, but in my host I need to start rpcbind service to make NFSv4 works. Check your duplex. I have had two recent problems with duplex: One, with a Cisco router - it auto-negotiated every time to half duplex, even though it really -was- full. Use mii-tool to find out. Two, with a RR modem - the speed was forced to 10mb half duplex instead of 100mb full duplex. All sorts of strange loss. Once I put it back, all was well. I have used TONs of 8139s, and while I do see where they are not the fastest kid on the block, I cannot say I've seen packet loss. Bob

Tomcat Linux/Windows Performance Question

Hi, Now I have a windows 2008 server and a Tomcat 6.x on it. Our application has many many parts and it's very big. Actually we are not happy with tomcat performance, (We are working very hard on developing that software and improving performance) . We want to improve application performance (working on it now) and tomcat (by tuning and we are doing now) and finally OS, for this we want to remove (damn) windows and come back to centos. Is here anyone have some experience with tomcat on windows and Linux? which has better performance? -- Best Regards, Ashkan R

SSSD configuration

Hello, we're upgrading from Centos 5.8 to Centos 6.3 and have realized few things have changed in the system. We're using LDAP authentication (nss_ldap package) on our Centos 5.8 servers and have different PAM ldap configuration files configured to be used for specific PAM services. Here is the example of our setup: /etc/pam.d/service1: auth sufficient pam_ldap.so config=/etc/ldap_service1.conf /etc/pam.d/service2: auth sufficient pam_ldap.so config=/etc/ldap_service2.conf Thus we can use specific LDAP filters for various different services as not all users having access to one service also have access to other services on the same server. Now we're facing the problem to manage the same functionality with System Security Services Daemon (SSSD) which was newly presented with RHEL 6. We didn't find out so far how to specify custom sssd configuration file (or specific part of the configuration section/domain) in PAM service configuration. According to documentation only these options can be specified when using pam_sss module: [forward_pass] [use_first_pass] [use_authtok]. None of them can be used to make a difference in a ldap filter to be used. Is there a way how to configure specific search filters depending on PAM service ? CentOS6 LDAP Authentication.

Hi! I can make ldap authentication to work using LDAPS in CentOS 6. On CentOS 5, I just simply set tls_cheekpeer no to /etc/ldap.conf and it works! I tried all /etc/nslcd.conf /etc/pam_ldap.conf /etc/openldap/ldap.conf It 's really confusing on CentOS 6. Why so many files???? CentOS 5 LDAPTLS_REQCERT=never ldapsearch -x -H ldaps://xxxx (works!) CentOS 6 LDAPTLS_REQCERT=never ldapsearch -x -H ldaps://xxxx (Can 't connect to LDAP Server ...) Permission "nfsnobody" and mounting an nfs share in a datacenter

Hi A datacenter I use provides mountable nfs shares that are provided through a subnet, the only person having access to the nfs share is me. If I do this: mount -t nfs 192.168.53.21:/USERNAME /mnt/share/ then I get the share: [root@hostname /mnt/share] #>ls -la total 12 drwxrwxrwx 2 nfsnobody nfsnobody 4096 Oct 9 18:04 . drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 Oct 9 17:55 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 nfsnobody nfsnobody 0 Oct 9 18:01 test I want to use this as a snapshot backup drive, so I need to have the permission on the backup the same as on the source, e.g. rsync -avH /bin /mnt/share Off course this fails: rsync: chown "/mnt/share/bin/.zcat.WDISFU" failed: Operation not permitted (1) How can I make this possible?
