Assign external esata drive to KVM

Hello Everyone, I have a CentOS 6.3 host running a few KVMs. One of them is a CentOS 6.3 KVM that I want to use for making backups with BackupPC. What I'm having a problem with is assigning the KVM an external drive. I used to run BackupPC on an Ubuntu box. The backups went to an external eSATA 1.5TB, ext4 format, single partition drive (regular 3.5" in an enclosure). I want to now attach that same external drive to my KVM host, and pass it up to the KVM running BackupPC. I added the entire drive as a second storage disk to the KVM. I used the disk's label (/dev/disk/by-label/backups) so that I wouldn't have to worry about the device name changing down the road. When I booted up the KVM and listed the disks, I only saw "/dev/vdb". I was also expecting to see "/dev/vdb1". I ran fdisk on it only to see the partition table wasn't detected. The drive itself is OK - I can mount it successfully on the KVM host. Here's the fdisk output: Device contains neither a valid DOS partition table, nor Sun, SGI or OSF disklabel Building a new DOS disklabel with disk identifier 0xd6912a1b. Changes will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them. After that, of course, the previous content won't be recoverable. elrepo kernel on CentOS 5.8

I have installed kernel-ml-2.6.39-4.2.el5.elrepo.i686.rpm on a computer. and also kernel-ml-devel-2.6.39-4.2.el5.elrepo.i686.rpm with base CentOS 5.8 i686 I also installed kmod-alsa-1.0.25-3.el5.elrepo.i686.rpm All "seems" fine - sound even works - in the fact that I hear it. However, when using alsamixer it appears that I can move the volume up/down and even hit MUTE but it has no affect. Hitting MUTE I still get sound out. Moving the volume up/down has no effect. What else might I be needing to have "control" of the volume? Thanks, Jerry

Personally, for systems on dynamic IPs that I need to be able to log into, I have cronjobs that just hit a specific web page on one of my domains and a simple script records the IP.

Completely automatic yum updating on Centos 6

I am about to set up a computer with Centos 6 that I'll probably never see again. I don't want to give out the root password, but I would like to have it automatically and transparently update itself. What is the best way to do this? find with -mtime and -print0 = inaccurate results

If I run this: find /path/to/files/ -type f -mtime -2 -name *.xml.gz I get the expected results, files with modify time less than two days old. But, if I run it like this, with the print0 flag: find /path/to/files/ -print0 -type f -mtime -2 -name *.xml.gz I get older files included as well. Anyone know why?

I am looking at using grubby. My command is: grubby --grub --title "CentOS (2.6.32.60)" --add-kernel=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32.60 --initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.32.60.img --args="ro root=LABEL=/ noapic" --make-default my etc/grub.conf file after running the command is: title CentOS (2.6.32.60) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32.60 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet noapic initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.32.60.img title CentOS (2.6.18-308.4.1.el5) root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-308.4.1.el5 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet noapic initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18-308.4.1.el5.img Notice the "root (hd0,0)" is not there... What option creates that entry, I did not see it? Thanks, Jerry
