Using two subnets to change network configuration

Problem: My network uses the 192.168.1.0/24 network. Since is the most common network in all of the world it begins presenting problems when I want to set up vpns, or try to do other routing. The solution: Change the network from 192.168.1.0/24 to 172.24.24.0/22. This is somewhere in the middle of the less frequently used RFC-1918 20 bit private network range. My network contains 40 or so nodes, windows, linux, and proprietary operating systems of various types (TiVos, iPhones, iPads, TVs, BluRay players, WAP's, etc.) What I would like to do to minimize down time would be to create a single new machine on the network with addresses on both networks and set up as a router between the networks. That way, I can convert the machines one at a time, and not loose any connectivity. When all done, take the temporary router down and just use the new addresses. Machines are set up both static and DHCP, and there are some virtual servers running on a VMware machine. Updating all of the machines using DHCP can be done in a single pass, but the static machines will have to be done one at a time. Can anyone give me any pointers to web sites to help set this up. I know how to set up multiple addresses on the same NIC (eth0 and eth0:0). After that, I'm at a bit of a loss. And Yes, I know setting up multiple subnets on the same physical wire is a bad idea, but this is only for a couple of days until I can get everything moved to the new address scheme. Thanks Harold

Manual OOM killing?

Hey guys and gals, Yesterday I had one of my scientists kill one of my servers when his program ran amok and gobbled up all the memory, or forked too many processes, or I'm just not exactly sure what to be honest. Is there something I can run manually in cron to look for rampant programs and kill them? I know that may be hard to discern but I could also include a list if "known good" programs not to kill, as well as a list of "known suspect" user IDs Anyone ever done this? Bind isn't working. after upgrade.

Hello Mates, I just reciently updated BIND on my CentOS 6.2 (don't remember which version) but now I am using version: BIND version 9.8.2 The packages I have: bind bind-libs bind-chroot bind-utils bind-devel First of all, doing "service named status" it throws me: WARNING: key file (/etc/rndc.key) exists, but using default configuration file (/etc/rndc.conf) rndc: connection to remote host closed This may indicate that * the remote server is using an older version of the command protocol, * this host is not authorized to connect, * the clocks are not synchronized, or * the key is invalid. After a Google search I found: to remove rdnc.key and it was suppose to be working ok. and I chown named:named the file /etc/named.conf, now if I do "service named status" it throws me: version: 9.8.2rc1-RedHat-9.8.2-0.10.rc1.el6_3.1 CPUs found: 4 worker threads: 4 number of zones: 17 debug level: 0 xfers running: 0 xfers deferred: 0 soa queries in progress: 0 query logging is OFF recursive clients: 0/0/1000 tcp clients: 0/100 server is up and running named (pid 1456) is running... The thing is, whenever I want to check the domain name on intoDNS.com service it says: ERROR: One or more of your nameservers did not respond: The ones that did not respond are: and it show boths are bad, I thought may be a delay on propagate, but now I have 2 hours waiting and still nothing. Any help? RAID card selection - JBOD mode / Linux RAID

I don't think this is off topic since I want to use JBOD mode so that Linux can do the RAID. I'm going to hopefully run this in CentOS 5 and Ubuntu 12.04 on a Sunfire x2250 Hard to get answers I can trust out of vendors :-) I have a Sun RAID card which I am pretty sure is LSI OEM. It is a 3G/s SAS1 with 2 external connectors like the one on the right here : http://www.cablesondemand.com/images/products/CS-SAS1MUKBCM.jpg And I have 2 x Sun J4400 JBOD cabinets each with 24 disks. If I buy a new card that is 6G/s SAS2 with the same connector, can I connect my cabinets to it and have them work? Even if they only work at 3G/s I don't care. I've also hit an issue with the number of logical devices allowed, and am wondering whether this might be a HW, FW or SW limitation if anyone knows. I want to run everything in JBOD mode and let Linux do the RAID. So for the first cabinet I ran this command 24 times to create a logical drive for each physical one /usr/StorMan/arcconf create 1 logicaldrive max volume 0,X noprompt Where X goes from 0 to 23 Went great, created /dev/sd[c-z] and I was able to use those with mdadm to create 4 x RAID6 arrays and then a big RAID0 out of the 4 x RAID6. Works great! Then I try to connect the 2nd cabinet and when I run the above arcconf command it tells me there are already 24 logical devices, and this is the max. Anyone know whether that is HW, FW or SW? Would a new card fix this problem?
