LPR to windows lpd question

Hi All, I am trying to print from a CentOS 5.3 server to a windows LPD service. After enabling the LPD service on Windows and creating a LPR port to a particular printer when I execute the following command on CentOS server I do not come out. lpr -H winprint:515 -P printer1 file.txt The above command does not exit. Do I need to configure anything on the server to be able to use lpr as a client ? Ultimately I want to use the above command to print to various printers based on different parameters. On a different note when I execute the same command on Fedora 14 I get Unknown as the error. Thanks Tharun

External HDD query

Greetings, I have a USB external 2TB HDD with one NTFS partition which is to be used for backup up from about 5-8 workstations (all Win*) all are shut down when the office is closed I am playing around with Amanda server on Centos 5.7. (It is over 3 years since I last implemented Amanda for about 50 workstations mostly Fedora and couple of XP boxes -- it sang and danced quite nicely.) Now the issue I have is: 1. I want the External HDD to appear at another mountpoint than the /media/<HDDLabel> persistantly on the centos box.. 2. How do I ensure that amanda starts and completes its backup say between 0800hrs and 1900hrs. (/ducks -- I _know_ it is amanda related, I am crosing my fingers here) 3. Is Amanda really a good choice or an overkill in this scenario, given that this is a small s/w development shop where linux expertise is *not* available? 4. Is there an alternate simpler automatic network backup? (Bacula too seems overkill) 5. Amanda is in its 3.x avatar ("The most recent stable release is version 3.3.0"). Whereas Centos 5.x yum install yeilded (I dont know from where) amanda-server-2.5.0p2-8.el5 which -- as is usually expected -- a bit dated 6. The Windows client is 3.1.3. Will the ancient server and shining new client play nicely? 7. Is there a howto using rsync/rdiff given that Windows Scheduler is not exactly like our trusty, mature cron. The centos wiki on this matter is, well, a tad old. Surely the Centos server, which I introduced, in this shop is going to stay and will not go away. Of course RDIFF and other things are valid provided I have another Centos box. Any answers appreciated. TIA -- Regards, Rajagopal

Strangely slow disk

I have a 1.5TB Western Digital hard disk (WD15EADS-00R6B0) on my CentOS-5.7 server, which has become incredibly slow for some operations, eg rsync, BackupPC archive, e2fsck, although it seems to work fine for ordinary file operations, and "smartctl -a /dev/sdb" does not report any errors. For example, running "e2fsck -p /dev/sdb5" on a 250GB partition on this disk took over 24 hours to complete, as it did on another partition. Centos 6x86_64: no hypervisor options were found for this connection

After following http://itscblog.tamu.edu/startup-guide-for-kvm-on-centos-6/ (because I found out that vmware server 2 does not work on centos 6) I go to the point where I tried to create a new VM in the virt-manager. At that point I get "no hypervisor options were found for this connection" in the manager but no entries in the logs in /var/log Googling tells me to check to make sure that the service is running, and it is. Abrt: kernel crash on boot -- but the system runs fine

using a fully up to date 6.0 (and the CR repo) on my eeepc 901, every time the system boots and log in,, almost immediately (sometimes a few seconds later) get a popup from abrt complaining of a crash in the kernel package. yet the system continues to run fine, as far as I can tell. syncing imap servers with imapsync

CentOS5 w winbind samba integrated w Win2k8 AD

Is anyone out there using CentOS5 integrated correctly with a Windows 2008 domain so that active directory authentication can be used for samba shares? I have tried the newer RPM's from SERNET up to 3.5 and 3.6 without any luck. The usual behavior is wbinfo returns the active directory users and groups but 'getent passwd' only returns local users. I also tried compiling samba from source but could never get winbind to properly connect. I have tried this with Ubunutu and CentOS6 and both of those "just worked". So if this is working for anyone with CentOS5 would you be willing to share your samba version, samba conf and pam setup? I've put a lot of time into it and also worked with the samba mailing lists without any success. Thanks

remote syslog question

Hi all! I'm still googling for this, but after quite a while I'm no closer, so I figured I'd ask you guys: I've got my router using syslog on my centos box to log the router's system events. Works fine. however, it mixes 'em into /var/log/messages along with the messages from the Centos box itself. is there a way to separate them into itsown (set of??) files? So far I've not come up with anything. Thanks in advance!
