What replaces /sbin/hotplug in CentOS 5?

What subsystem replaces /sbin/hotplug in CentOS 5? The older hotplug package is missing from CentOS 5 and /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug yields an empty string. Since hotpluging for standard devices still seems to work, I presume that something replaces the hotplug helper found on CentOS 4. Can someone point me in the right place? All of my Googleing points me back to the (obsolete?) /sbin/hotplug subsystem (Google is just not being helpful!). I'm guessing udev and/or HAL are involved somehow, but I am having a hard time figuring out what I need to do. Specificly, I have a special USB device (a PI Engineering Rail Driver Console device) that I have written a daemon for that I need to launch when the device is plugged in and when the device is unplugged, the daemon needs to be killed. Missing stuff in /bin

Hi all Having a weird issue with CentOS 6. I lost a lot of stuff in /bin/ (cp,rpm,cat and others) on one host, but that was a development machine and I'm not really sure what happened there. But now I ran into a similar problem (missing at least /bin/vi and /bin/cp) on a host where I'm a lot more certain of all that has been done on the machine. This is what happened, it's a _complete_ list of what I have done on the host: - installed centos 6 from dvd .iso, into esxi 4.1 vm - selected "web server" as base packages in install - configured network interface - configured some variables in /etc/profile.d (with vi - note this later) - installed mysqld and some php packages - created a backup script in /etc/cron.daily (just does mysqldump and /var/www gzip'ing) - removed postgresql - put some data in mysql db + apache documentroot - ran yum update - tried to configure an apache virtualhost - noticed that vi is missing - noticed that /bin/cp is missing as well - coreutils & vim-minimal are installed according to rpm Yum.log shows that during the yum update vim-minimal was updated, coreutils not, no package removals visible. Can't see anything in dmesg, root's history, /var/log/secure, /var/log/messages that would explain this. No one else has access. I am certain I have not accidentally removed the files.. Anyone seen anything similar? I'm a bit hesitant to say it's a bug or claim that yum update is to blame, because then I'd think a lot of folks were bitten by similar problems. regards Mikko Koivunen

Back up system

I have centos 5.7 (server). I need to configure it for backup system, that means it have to back up or back up documents shall be posted or send to this server from various users (clients using windows machine and ubuntu). Can someone help me with instructions on how i can make this possible? And /or is it possible to set active directory on this machine and if possible how? CentOS 5.7 Ethernet bonding - order of enslavement matters?

Setting up bonding in active-backup mode 1 (using ARP monitoring) on a server, it looked OK, but pulling the active link cable didn't actually work, it didn't fail over. Eventually with manual playing around with modprobe, ifconfig, ifenslave, etc., a solution was stumbled upon: enslave the eth1 device before eth0, and all is good. Why this should matter is a puzzle - I could not find anything in bonding.txt or on the web about it. I had to change ifup-eth to fix the problem. Any ideas on why the enslavement order matters, or a better solution to work around it? The rest of this post is details. To fix this, I had to patch /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth to reverse the order when it is updating the sysfs slaves list. I don't like this solution (changing standard system files) but it seems like the best one for now, and should not break anything. Maybe it's the particular network devices. Backup live system

Though I've worked with enterprise systems, I'm not familiar with FOOS backup software. Which of those recommended would allow me to backup a system while users are active on it? If it matters the system uses LVM. I'd also like to be able to avoid needing the network if possible. I'm trying to install a gem named Fabulator on CentOS 6 CR x86_64. It's failing on libxslt-ruby. I'm running ruby-1.8.7 and gem-1.3.7. Listing the gems available for xslt, and what catches my eye is the x86-mingw32 items. Looking on CentOS 5 I found the package "mingw32-iconv" in EPEL, but am unsure if that is what would solve this. This is for a series of websites running Radiant that I've inherited and this is all working in FreeBSD though that server is barely hanging on and so I'm moving to my existing CentOS infrastructure.
