panga font failure in CentOS 6

Hello listmates, Has anybody experienced the following: [root@localhost ~]# system-config-date /usr/share/system-config-date/scdMainWindow.py:232: PangoWarning: failed to choose a font, expect ugly output. engine-type='PangoRenderFc', script='common' self.xml = gtk.glade.XML ("/usr/share/system-config-date/system-config-date.glade", domain="system-config-date") /usr/share/system-config-date/timezone_map_gui.py:313: PangoWarning: failed to choose a font, expect ugly output. engine-type='PangoRenderFc', script='latin' weight=pango.WEIGHT_BOLD) [root@localhost ~]# True to the warning, the fonts do come out as unreadable rectangles. Anybody know why this happens or how to fix it? Thanks. Boris.

Hi List, Any ideas what is wrong with controller? Netapp like snapshots using Centos 5/6 direct attached storage

Hello, I'm researching the best method of providing about 20 users in a production environment the same functionality as they would have on a Netapp NFS share. The O/S I will be using is CentOS 5 or 6 (max flex on which one) and the hardware is a disk array directly (12 SAS disks 7TB un-configured brand new) attached to a HP 580 G 7. I've done some reading on ZFS on Linux ,fuse-ZFS, BRTFS ,rsnapshot, snapFS. Any one have some advice or experiences to share? Thanks, spuds

Centos 6 - named with internal zone file and forwarding

Hi All, I have two Centos 6 servers running BIND. I have configured the two servers to run internal zones as a master / slave setup. My gateway runs DNSmasq and I would like all other requests for lookups to be sent to the DNSmasq system. I have added the following: forward first; forwarders { 172.16.0.1; }; Where 172.16.0.1 is the host running DNSmasq. For some reason I still cannot resolve anything outside my network. Any pointers? Live CD boot for KVM guest. How?

Hi, My host and guest are CentOS 6. The guest is going to be a web server in production. I am trying to resize (extend) of the base partition of my guest. But I can of course start the installation of CentOS 6 guest all over again with a larger image size. However, just for the sake of better understanding I an trying to solve things not to be end up in a dead end after some years. 1. I created a guest CentOS 6 with 12G total disk (on a iscsi drive). No Desktop, just for terminal use. No LVM, just a simple basic partitioning. 2. Later I wanted to increase the size of total image to 200G. 3. I managed to resize the image to 200G on my iscsi drive. So, there is 188G unallocated/unformatted volume within the guest image. Now, the hardest part. I have to resize the partition. I have been trying to find a way to do that. A search on Google showed that GParted is tool to do that. I had to install all Desktop and X as Gparted is a GUI tool. Installed vncserver. Then, I found out that GParted can not resize the live guest. So, I downloaded GParted Live CD. Now, the questions: 1. If it was a physical machine I would boot from the CD. If I can boot it from host CDROM but then how should I operate on a specific guest? What is the easiest way to access GUI of the guest if I boot from Live CD. 2. I am wondering if a simple LVM route at the beginning would be preferred. Changing size of the iscsi volume on my NAS is easy. I thought there was no need for more complication, so went with basic /boot / and swap partitions. Is resizing partitions for LVM easier than basic partitioning (without LVM)? 3. Is there a specific tool in KVM suit which performs resizing partition within the image? Or as I prefer command line tools, is there a way to achieve resizing without any graphical tool like GParted? With GParted I had to install all the X and Gnome files, vncserver which otherwise I don't need. I would appreciate any information/hint/experience. All the best.

What replaces /sbin/hotplug in CentOS 5?

What subsystem replaces /sbin/hotplug in CentOS 5? The older hotplug package is missing from CentOS 5 and /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug yields an empty string. Since hotpluging for standard devices still seems to work, I presume that something replaces the hotplug helper found on CentOS 4. Can someone point me in the right place? All of my Googleing points me back to the (obsolete?) /sbin/hotplug subsystem (Google is just not being helpful!). I'm guessing udev and/or HAL are involved somehow, but I am having a hard time figuring out what I need to do. Specificly, I have a special USB device (a PI Engineering Rail Driver Console device) that I have written a daemon for that I need to launch when the device is plugged in and when the device is unplugged, the daemon needs to be killed. Missing stuff in /bin

Hi all Having a weird issue with CentOS 6. I lost a lot of stuff in /bin/ (cp,rpm,cat and others) on one host, but that was a development machine and I'm not really sure what happened there. But now I ran into a similar problem (missing at least /bin/vi and /bin/cp) on a host where I'm a lot more certain of all that has been done on the machine. This is what happened, it's a _complete_ list of what I have done on the host: - installed centos 6 from dvd .iso, into esxi 4.1 vm - selected "web server" as base packages in install - configured network interface - configured some variables in /etc/profile.d (with vi - note this later) - installed mysqld and some php packages - created a backup script in /etc/cron.daily (just does mysqldump and /var/www gzip'ing) - removed postgresql - put some data in mysql db + apache documentroot - ran yum update - tried to configure an apache virtualhost - noticed that vi is missing - noticed that /bin/cp is missing as well - coreutils & vim-minimal are installed according to rpm Yum.log shows that during the yum update vim-minimal was updated, coreutils not, no package removals visible. Can't see anything in dmesg, root's history, /var/log/secure, /var/log/messages that would explain this. No one else has access. I am certain I have not accidentally removed the files.. Anyone seen anything similar? I'm a bit hesitant to say it's a bug or claim that yum update is to blame, because then I'd think a lot of folks were bitten by similar problems. regards Mikko Koivunen

Back up system

I have centos 5.7 (server). I need to configure it for backup system, that means it have to back up or back up documents shall be posted or send to this server from various users (clients using windows machine and ubuntu). Can someone help me with instructions on how i can make this possible? And /or is it possible to set active directory on this machine and if possible how?
