Intel HD graphics & CentOS 6: Error inserting i915

I installed CentOS 6 to Acer 7750 laptop, which has Intel Sandybridge CPU ( i5-2410M) with integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000. By default X won't use intel driver for graphics, but vesa instead, which limits the resolution to 1024x768. I tried to force the use of intel driver by writing a xorg.cof file, but then X doesn't start at all. I updated libdrm and xorg-x11-drv-intel from elrepo. This intel driver 2.15 is newer than in Fedora 15 Live CD, and with it the graphics work properly. The problem seems to be related with i915 kernel module: (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" FATAL: Error inserting i915 (/lib/modules/2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.x86_64/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko): No such device (EE) No devices detected. I've tried kernels from CentOS Base repo, and CentOS-Plus repo too, no difference. I found a similar old bugzilla entry: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=495524 Somewhere (don't find the source any more) I saw that i915 would need intel_agp module, and that would be the problem. This goes a little bit beyond my knowledge level. Maybe this has been fixed somewhere about a year ago: https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/120293/ But is this patch something that is still missing from latest CentOS kernels? If someone has a solution for this, please advice. Regards, Timo

Hello all, This is the laptop I own: HP Pavilion dv6t Quad Edition Spec: Intel Core i7-2630QM 2.0GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB HDD, VGA ATI Radeon HD 6490M You can also check the spec here: http://www.amazon.com/HP-Pavilion-dv6t-dv6tqe-Laptop/dp/B00506B7DS/ref=sr_1… I am going to install CentOS 6 to it but I want to make sure that which drivers will CentOS 6 support: Ethernet, Wifi, sound and especially VGA ATI Radeon HD 6490M. perl-Nagios-Plugin-0.35-1.el5.rf.noarch from rpmforge: dependency problem

Hi folks, I hope this is the right mailing list to ask since on the repoforge website there is no list or contact information. I have a problem with updating the perl-Nagios-Plugin package. I have installed perl-Nagios-Plugin-0.33-1.el6.rf.noarch, and running yum update leads to: > Error: Package: perl-Nagios-Plugin-0.35-1.el6.rf.noarch (rpmforge) > Requires: /usr/local/bin/perl > You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem > You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest > I do not see how to get this fixed; enabling rpmforge-extras and rpmforge-testing did not work (no /usr/local/bin/perl there), and symlinking /usr/local/bin/perl to stanard perl did not work either. I run into this problem on CentOS5 and 6, the latter both in 32bit and 64bit. And I do not find any hint on Google. Am I the only one to use this package? :-) Any hint or help is appreciated. Dirk

www.mydomain.org and mydomain.org should resolve to the same IP

Hi list, I am having a debate with one of my clients where I administer their domain and storage server but the website is hosted by godaddy. thus www.mydomain.org goes to one of godaddy's servers but the mydomain.org and mail.mydomain.org and ns1.mydomain.org all go elsewhere. My website designer has been convinced by the godaddy web design team that we should <quote> Again, the standard practice in the industry is for name.org and www.name.org to be "tied" together. The primary domain is mydomain.org and you have it while the church's web site is using the sub domain, www.mydomain.org. I have been on the phone with tech support and they say that out of close to 1 million web site hosting customers, NOBODY purposely separates the two. We will run into these issues every time someone tries to create a form, new navigation and potentially new pages, according to Godaddy. PLEASE create a sub-domain for your server that is not mydomain.org and, transfer mydomain.org into the new godaddy account we just set up for the new web site. </quote> I have never heard this before, and have not had any problems with any other clients until this client hooked up with godaddy for their website. Anyone out there that can shed some light on this? Do most domains keep the Top Level Domain (TLD) the same as the www.TLD? TIA Rob

offline root lvm resize

So here goes... First some back story -Centos 5 with latest updates as of yesterday. kernel is 2.6.18-238.19.1.el5 -setup is raid 1 for /boot and lvm over raid6 for everything else - The / partition (lvm "RootVol") had run out of room... (100% full, things where falling appart...) I resized the root volume (from 20GiB to 50GiB). This was done from a fedora 15 livecd, seemed like a better idea than doing it on a live system at the time.... After the resize the content of all the lvs could be mounted and all data was still there (all this from within fedora). The problem is when i try to reboot into centos as the root volume cannot be found. boot message goes as follows ... No Volume groups found Volume Group "RaidVolGrp" not found ... Kernel panic the UUID's have not changed, but there is definitely a missing link, probably something dumb... cron jobs not running

hello list!! I'm attempting to find out why this cron job isn't running. the host is centos 5.6 on i386 just so you know. 0 3 * * * /bin/alldb > /home/bluethundr/backupdb/alldb-$(date +%Y%m%d%H%S).sql The job is meant to backup all the databases on a mysql server every day at 3 am. I have checked the backup directory and nothing is showing up for those days. I created the same job to run every minute but just like the job above the backups do not appear. * * * * * /bin/alldb > /home/bluethundr/backupdb/alldb-$(date +%Y%m%d%H%S).sql I have verified that the cron service is, indeed, running [root@VIRTCENT09:/home/bluethundr/backupdb] #service crond status crond (pid 8053) is running... gnome-panel on centos 6

How do you disable gnome-panel on centos 6? Before I could at least kill gnome-panel on centos 5, however on centos 6 even kill -9 gnome-panel restarts it again. Anyone know how? jerry

Adding the [SOLVED] Tag to break threads

hi guys, Just a quick note about adding [SOLVED] tags to the Subject lines on email lists : Dont do it, it does not help and makes no difference to the content - yet, it breaks threading of responses. Unline web forums, email clients will try and thread using the Subject and in-reply-to headers to retain thread sanity. So dont please dont break that, its quite a key part of the whole mailing lists experience for everyone. I understand that some people seem to think that adding that makes it easier to later search on google. And if thats the case, adding the SOLVED word in your actual email body would do just as well, Add it high up the body content for even better effect. - KB
