CentOS-6 firewall how to open a port

I'm running CentOS-6 on an HP MicroServer (since this morning) and I'd like to open an non-standard port, for use on a laptop attached to the internet through the server. Do I have to explicitly add an iptables rule? If so, and I want to open (say) udp port 500 , what command should I give? I've always used shorewall in the past, and will probably do so now if the default firewall is difficult to use. But I thought I would try it first as an experiment. My recollection is that in old versions of CentOS one could non-standard ports through system-config-firewall ; but it seems that now this can only be used for standard ports; I looked at <http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Network/IPTables> but didn't find it very enlightening. authconfig-gtk-6.1.9-1.fc14.i686.rpm missing durring URL Install ?

Hello, This is a rather strange problem. I am using the i386 netinstall CD to boot and do a URL (HTTP) install since my machine only has CD drive and can't boot from USB either. During the install, the installer was looking for package authconfig- gtk-6.1.9-1.fc14.i686.rpm and claims that it's missing. I checked the RPMs under packages, and for sure it wasn't there. But look at the package name. Why is the installer asking for .fc14. package ? authconfig-gtk-6.1.4-6.el6.i686.rpm exists instead, but I don't understand why the .fc14. package was requested. Anyone else sees this ? My install, of course, did not succeed. Thanks AC

SQUID Logrotate

Hi all, i have problem, after uprade CentOS 5.5 to 5.6, Logrotate don't work on two proxy servers. I have installed : squid-2.6.STABLE21-6.el5 logrotate-3.7.4-9.el5_5.2 On first server , squid logs never rotated, config is here cat /etc/logrotate.d/squid /var/log/squid/access.log { weekly rotate 5 copytruncate compress notifempty missingok } /var/log/squid/cache.log { weekly rotate 5 copytruncate compress notifempty missingok } /var/log/squid/store.log { weekly rotate 5 copytruncate compress notifempty missingok # This script asks squid to rotate its logs on its own. # Restarting squid is a long process and it is not worth # doing it just to rotate logs postrotate /usr/sbin/squid -k rotate endscript } On second server squid logs rotated every day . Upgrade from CentOS 5.4 to 5.6 -> 6.0

Hi all, I am running 5.4 After running sudo yum clean all sudo yum update We got it upgraded to 5.6 cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 5.6 (Final) So, how can I get it my CentOS from 5.6 to 6.0? issues when add driverdisk to centos5.6 using NFS method

Hi, I am Ken.. I am trying to add dud(driver update disk) to centos5.6 using network method, I can successfully add dud to centos5.6 using http and ftp method, but fail when using nfs method. However those all three methods are officially supported in the centos5.6. As indicated in the centos5.6 website, we can see they not only support http, ftp, but also nfs. http://centos.org/docs/5/html/Installation_Guide-en-US/s1-kickstart2-option… ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ driverdisk (optional) Driver diskettes can be used during kickstart installations. You must copy the driver diskettes's contents to the root directory of a partition on the system's hard drive. Then you must use the driverdisk command to tell the installation program where to look for the driver disk. driverdisk <partition> [--type=<fstype>] Alternatively, a network location can be specified for the driver diskette: driverdisk --source=ftp://path/to/dd.img driverdisk --source=http://path/to/dd.img driverdisk --source=nfs:host:/path/to/img * <partition> Partition containing the driver disk. * --type= File system type (for example, vfat or ext2). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In my experiment, I make my dud address in the kickstart file like below: driverdisk --source=nfs:9.122.90.239:/deployment/dud-2.6.18-128-64.centos.iso but it fails to load the dud when centos begin to install. do you have any suggestion to me? svnserve with encryption on CentOS

Hello, I've got a CentOS box that i'm wanting to set up svnserve on. I've read much, and am confused. Does svnserve support data encryption and also restricting users from specific repositories? I'm thinking of a single repo structure under /var/svn-repos and I've got two users user1 and user2, each should have access to their own projects in this case user1 can access project1 and user2 can access project2, but neither should be allowed to access the others. My second issue is I don't want to have a access path like /var/svn-repos/project1 for instance. I've read the -r root option which I would set to: -r /var/svn-repos would settle this, but am not sure where to set that option so it's picked up. Thanks. Dave.

Celebrating Centos 6.0 Day World-wide

Saturday, 9 July 2011 in England. This afternoon I was very enthusiastically telling staff in a large US owned stationary and computers chain store (with often too high prices), Staples, about the joys and benefits of using Linux, specifically Centos, over M$ Windoze. May I suggest that all us very grateful users of Centos make 6 copies of Centos 6.0 (either i386 or/and X64) and hand then out to friends, colleagues or strangers (unknown members of the public) who might be interested in trying Centos ? A modification of this idea could be to distribute "Live" versions of Centos that can run without altering a computer's hard disk(s). Centos is great - and I should have started using it years ago - so too is the utterly commendable efforts of the gallant and hard working volunteers who made this excellent experience possible for us to enjoy. Spreading the metaphorical 'word' in the form of a give-away CD or DVD will undoubtedly promote Centos and liberate more computer users from the costly and ghastly tyranny of M$ Windoze. In England one can not purchase a new computer from a chain store without first paying the compulsory Windoze tax even if one has no intention of using Micro$oft. Lets be proud of others world-wide achievement in making Centos 6.0 available to us and let us celibate their inspirational achievement by giving away some easy-to-duplicate LIVE CDs or a DVD set (2 disks) to those who would like to try Centos. Since the new version is Centos 6 then give away a minimum of 6 copies of a LIVE CD or 6 copies of a complete i386 or X64 distribution. -- With best regards, Paul. HP Network Printer Issue - Resend

I sent the following message back in June, but I must have missed the reply: I'm attempting to install and configure HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing) software on my CentOS 5.3 x86_64 system without success. I've got a HP Officejet Pro 8500 multi-function printer connected via ethernet. I'm getting a message saying that it cannot locate the libcups module in the /usr/lib64 and /usr/lib directories. However, I can locate then correct modules using the find command. I can print to this printer using multiple versions of Fedora and multiple versions of Windows. Does anyone have any suggestions why it is not working? Has anyone seen an issue like this? I'm continuing to run CentOS 5.3 because VMware Server 2.02 works well there. And I haven't found a tutorial or 'How To' showing how to move to kernel based virtualization (KVM) on the later versions of CentOS. TIA Gene

Unhandled Exception during Install

Hello, I am trying to do an NFS install of CentOS 6 on a fairly old / generic machine AMD Athlon XP 1700. I use the CentOS-6.0-i386-netinstall.iso burned to a CD to boot the installation. Only / partition and swap (2 partition) is set on the primary IDE harddrive. I have a PCI SATA card with a 2TB SATA drive on the machine that I wanted to use as /home (which I set during the install). The CentOS iso image is host on a Fedora machine on the LAN. After the part where "Transferring Install Image to Hard Drive", I get Unhandled Exception box, and I could only "Save", "Debug" or "Exit". The install failed. I tried the install several time, and I also tried unplugging the SATA HD, thinking that it may caused the problem. But the problem is still there. So even for the most basic install (on IDE harddrive) with Minimal install it doesn't work. I saved the error log from the "unhandled exception"; it's 1.5MB XML file. Not sure where / how I can post this or if this may be useful for someone to look at. Any suggestion or help with this would be appreciated. Thanks AC

CentOS-6 dhcpd

I've installed CentOS-6 on my server (in parallel to CentOS-5.6) and now I'm trying to set up dhcpd. I'm not sure if there has been a change in dhcpd under CentOS-6, but I'm getting the dreaded message "Not configured to listen on any interfaces!" when I "sudo service dhcpd restart". I realise now that I have never known how the connection between interface (eth0 and eth1, in my case) and network (192.168.1.0 and 192.168.2.0, in my case) is established. I have DHCPDARGS=eth1 in /etc/sysconfig/dhcpd but evidently I need to say something more somewhere. Can one actually specify the interface in /etc/dhcpd.conf and if so how?
