Good book on Linux Admin (Centos 5.5)

My Admin books are out of date, so I need a new one that contains info about the Linux as in Centos 5.5. I am a "Sunday user"; not one earning a living as an Admin. Recommendations welcomed.... Restarting a Perl-script (socket daemon) from /etc/inittab

Hello fellow CentOS sysadmins, I run a small multiplayer card game with around 500 users at peak times. The client is in Flash and the server is in Perl. The Perl server binds to port 8080, i.e. only 1 instance of it can be started (important detail). The Perl server poll()s TCP-sockets and forks only once - at the startup by calling this method: sub daemonize { die "Can not fork: $!\n" unless defined (my $child = fork()); # the parent should die exit 0 if $child; setsid(); open(STDIN, '</dev/null'); open(STDOUT, '>/tmp/pref.txt'); open(STDERR, '>&STDOUT'); chdir('/'); umask(0); } It runs on CentOS 5.6 Linux / 64 bit, PostgreSQL 8.4.8 and Perl 5.8.8. Because my budget is small and I had enough troubles already, I want to use as little additional software as possible - so that I can change hosters or reinstall my cheapo server quickly. That is why I for example just log to /tmp/pref.txt instead of installing syslog-ng. And that is why I'd like to use /etc/inittab for restarting my Perl daemon. My Perl daemon runs mostly stable, but approx. once a week it can crash with a May 29 11:06:46 myhost kernel: pref.pl[3113]: segfault at 00007fffa21e6fd8 rip 0000003cce274460 rsp 00007fffa21e6fd0 error 6 Since I'm tired of restarting the server manually, I've tried to add it to the /etc/inittab: pref:3:respawn:/bin/su -c '/usr/local/pref/pref.pl' nobody (and I've added a nightly cronjob to "pkill pref.pl" in the hope to refresh perl this way). Unfortunately this does not work as expected - in the /var/log/messages I see that the script is being started again and again every 5 mins: Jun 2 18:55:56 myhost init: Id "pref" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes What am I doing wrong here? I was hoping to being able to use /etc/inittab here, because I remember using it for a similar situation at work few years ago (also with a Perl daemon) and it worked well then... Thank you! Capturing ftp reponses

I am writing a script to automatically connect via ftp from a CentOS-5 host to one of our older (non-*nix OS) systems. The only common protocol that the remote host supports is ftp. What I want to do is to capture the initial response that comes back from that host before the user credentials are passed and log this information. I cannot seem to hit upon the right set of redirects to make this happen. In my script I invoke ftp thus: ftp -un "$TARGET_HOST" << EOS >> ${LOGGING_FILE} 2>&1 user $LOGON dir quit EOS When I connect to the host via ftp interactively from a session then I see this: Connected to host.domain.tld. 220 HP ARPA FTP Server [A0012H15] (C) Hewlett-Packard Co. 2000 [PASV SUPPORT] Remote system type is MPE/iX. However, the first line that I find in the logging file is the results of the dir command following the user command. ClearOS rebuild

nfs webroot 403's

hello list!! the reason I'm writing you guys today is that I'm looking to solve an issue I am having with apache on a centos 5.5 box. The situation is this.. I am sharing the webroot for a few sites in a test environment on an NFS share. This is the share: nas2:/mnt/store/web 1.4T 225G 1021G 19% /var/www Everything that is shared from this location on a server called simply web1 403's no matter what document you hit. On another web sever called web2 the opposite is true. Every document you share is correctly served. The error log is located here: ErrorLog "/var/log/httpd/jokefire.com-error_log" Yet when I try to generate some activity in the logs by hitting pages nothing turns up in that log. virt-install hell: how to *force* a local CD-ROM install?

I have a CentOS 5.6 system with a AMD Sempron(tm) Processor LE-1300 (which does not provide hardware virtualization support, so I can't use the --cdrom option) and I am *trying* to install FC15 as a guest O/S using a local FC15 DVD-ROM image. Everything work until the installer *insists* on firing up the network to get the repo data, etc. I have a *dial-up* Internet connection and this is a *desktop* machine and is thus pretty much anchored where it is. I have googled this, but it seems no one uses local DVD images. (Of cource *everyone* in the world, except for rural America, has broadband.) I was able to install FC15 on a old IDE disk connected via a USB port after booting a burned copy of the DVD. *Everything* needed to install the *minimual* system I want to install is there on the DVD, but I can't seem to get the FC15 installer to believe that. I *don't* want or need the updates at this time (maybe later). Oh, and the virt-viewer is chopping off the right third of the graphical display. Is there any way to fix that? It would let me resize the viewer window and does not provide scroll bars, etc. Or is the FC15 installer having a stupid idea of the virtual machine virtual monitor size? Can *that* be changed (the virtual machine's virtual monitor size)?
