Standard location for hotplug-time hdparm invocation

I need to disable the spin-down on an external USB drive because it spins down spontaneously while in use. The drive forgets the spindown-disable state across power outage so I need to reissue the hdparm command with each boot or hotplug. Where should I put the hdparm command to do this?

Could CentOS 5.5 on newer hardware make it freeze or shutdown?

Hi, I have built a new PC on which I've installed CentOS 5.5 64-bit (with updates) which after some hours of running suddenly either hard freeze or instant power off. The /var/log/messages log doesn't reveal anything of what has happened. The load has been either just idling or with moderate disc activities (transfers over 100GBit). Below is the hardware spec: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H55N-USB3 CPU: Intel Core i5 650 RAM: CORSAIR 8 GB RAM HDD1: Intel X25-M 80GB HDD2-7: Samsung ECHOGREEN 500GB ST LABS SATA/300 4-PORT PCI-E PSU: Corsair CX 430W I've also been running memtest86 for more than 24 hours without any errors. I was on my way to return either the motherboard or the PSU when I thought of installing Fedora 14 and give it a try. The PC has now been running for over 48 hours without any glitch, with varying load. I should also mention another problem that strangely disappeared with F14, and that was that the Samsung HDDs, which I have in a soft RAID6, now and then timed out (only one at a time). The message log showed a dump of NCQ queued commands, before it reconnected that disk. In F14 I haven't seen any errors at all in the log. Could those problems only relate to C5, or do you think I also have hardware problems and only been lucky so far with F14? Best Regards, Christian

PCI ethernet card for CentOS

I need to get a second ethernet card for my HP Proliant CentOS server, to attach a LinkSys WRT54GL router to. I see that there are many Realtek RTL8169S gigabit cards going for a song on eBay. Is anyone using one of these under CentOS? Do they work OK? (I used to have a couple of Realtek cards - not gigabit - and they worked fine.) Or does anyone have a strong recommendation for other cards? can't create large LVM, even though pvscan shows enough space left

From experience I can attest to the fact that PAL/NTSC CCTV cameras are significantly inferior to modern digital security cameras. I have used devices from Axis, who appear to be the largest and most diverse manufacturer (www.axis.com) but they're not the cheapest. As an aside, Axis cameras run embedded Linux. The newer Ethernet-enabled cameras can use POE (power over Ethernet) but you'll need either a power supply that you insert somewhere along the cable run, or a POE-enabled switch which supplies power to its Ethernet ports. Several brands are available. Using POE makes a lot of sense and saves a lot of trouble, but make sure your Ethernet cable installation is of high quality. Open-source software such as ZoneMinder works with cameras from several manufacturers, and runs on CentOS. I personally haven't tried it, but I understand it works well. Chuck

Detecting harddrive problem

Hi all, Recently I realize the filesystem became Read-only and there is "media error" message in the system log. It has passed several days without notice. I'm thinking of setting up a script to grep that "media error" and send email. Is there more elegant way of doing this? Thank you.

wicd questions

Hello I am trying to get wicd to work on Cent 5.5 it installs fine but when i run wicd-curses i get this error wicd-curses File "/usr/share/wicd/curses/wicd-curses.py", line 505 class appGUI(): ^ SyntaxError: invalid syntax my versions of wicd and python-urwid are wicd-1.7.0-3.el5 python-urwid-0.9.8.4-3.el5 Has anyone been able to get wicd working ? Or does anyone know how to fix the python syntax error ? I would like to be able to control my wireless networks via command line. btw this is not a centos base package so flame away please & thanks. LostSon CentOS - It's not just for servers ya know...

security cameras

I heard about some inexpensive security cameras which get their power through the same cat5 cable which delivers the data/pictures (which would simplify wiring tremendously). Does anyone know about these? Do they work with Linux, particularly CentOS? tnx 4 tips.
