bogus error message from yum update for gmime and gmime-sharp

When I do "yum update gmime gmime-sharp" I get: ... --> Missing Dependency: gmime = 2.2.10-5.el5.centos is needed by package gmime-sharp-2.2.10-5.el5.centos.i386 (installed) Error: Missing Dependency: gmime = 2.2.10-5.el5.centos is needed by package gmime-sharp-2.2.10-5.el5.centos.i386 (installed) ... But both of these are already installed: # rpm -q gmime gmime-sharp gmime-2.2.10-5.el5.centos gmime-sharp-2.2.10-5.el5.centos So: # package-cleanup --problems Setting up yum Reading local RPM database Processing all local requires No problems found Running the above "yum update ..." again yields the same bogus error messages. I've had problems with these two packages before. Why can't yum understand rpm for them? Hi, I´m trying to set up VCN server in Centos. I got the connection but no KDE windows, only a black window. Any idea? My xstartup is : #!/bin/sh xrdb $HOME/.Xresources xsetroot -solid grey xterm -geometry 80+24+10+10 -ls -title .$VNCDESTOP Desktop. & startkde & Regards Fernando

Problem updating VM

Hi, I am trying to bring one of my CentOS 5 VMs up to date. I have run: yum clean all yum update yum yum clean all yum update python* rpm* yum clean all without any problems or error messages. Now when I try to run yum update, I get the following: [root@tusker ~]# yum update There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: No module named cElementTree Please install a package which provides this module, or verify that the module is installed correctly. It's possible that the above module doesn't match the current version of Python, which is: 2.4.3 (#1, Sep 3 2009, 15:37:37) [GCC 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-46)] If you cannot solve this problem yourself, please go to the yum faq at: http://wiki.linux.duke.edu/YumFaq I then downloaded the python-clementtree package from dags site and tried to install it and get: [root@tusker ~]# rpm -i ./python-celementtree-1.0.5-1.2.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm warning: ./python-celementtree-1.0.5-1.2.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 6b8d79e6 error: Failed dependencies: python-elementtree conflicts with python-celementtree-1.0.5-1.2.el5.rf.x86_64 yet when I query the package I get: [root@tusker ~]# rpm -q python-celementtree-1.0.5-1.2.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm package python-celementtree-1.0.5-1.2.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm is not installed and when I try to remove it I get: [root@tusker ~]# rpm -e ./python-celementtree-1.0.5-1.2.el5.rf.i386.rpm error: package ./python-celementtree-1.0.5-1.2.el5.rf.i386.rpm is not installed I have tried rebuilding the rpm database with no result. Cobbler or manual set up for local repo

replacement for start-stop-daemon on CentOS

Hi Folks, I'd like to use "start-stop-daemon" on my centos-machine. I know , it's debian-like. But I can't find "startproc" on my machine nor in the repos. What is the CentOS-replacement for "start-stop-daemon"? Thx Timothy P.S. I found a start-stop-daemon.c script - but how to compile it? gcc start-stop-daemon.c ends in much errors.

NFS freeze when transmitting big files

Hi, I have one old spare PC, a PIII with 128 MB RAM, that I use as a spare file server. I have a headless CentOS 5 install on it, and a 2 terabyte external USB harddisk. The machine is in my basement (because it's quite loud), and I'm using what's called "CPL" here (Courant Porteur), which is basically Ethernet over 220V power lines. It's much slower than normally cabled Ethernet, but it works OK. I setup an NFS server on this machine, with the big 2TB storage on the external disk. On the first floor, on my main PC, I setup a consistent mounting of the NFS shares in /etc/fstab, and it works. Now here's the problem. Some of the files are quite big, usually movie files that can make up to 4 GB. More often than not, when I cut/paste such a file from my local harddisk to the server, it's quite slow (understandably, due to the slow CPL connection), but then the operation freezes in the middle, the cursor is unresponsive, even [Ctrl+Alt+Backspace] doesn't work, and I have to do a hard reboot. Now I wonder what this phenomenon can be due to. Some strange bottleneck effect due to either lack of RAM to the server or the slow network or both? Any ideas? Niki
