IP aliases of CentOS Guests not accessible running 2.6.18-164.el5xen

Hi all, First of all I am posting this on two lists for a reason, because the issue being reported by me could be because of a change delivered by a Kernel update or due to Xen. I have recently managed to update all Xen Guest domains running CentOS 5.3 to the latest bunch of updates + Kernel. My Xen host also runs the same CentOS 5.3 updated to all recent packages. The Guest images in concern had IP aliases assigned to them. Everything worked until I ran the updates and restarted. Since I have restarted the aliased IP addresses are no longer accessible from the outside world, they can still be accessed from all machines (guest virtual machines) in the subnet (ping, services like http). I have removed all firewall rules to test if that would have effected it without any change (any the fact that I can access them within the subnet proves its not the firewall). Is there anything special I have to do to enable aliasing? May be this is a Xen issue? I am suspecting the Xen host, but not sure how to go about proving this. Any information would be greatly appreciated. My Guests do run fail2ban (delivered via atrpms) and iptables (allowing only HTTP, HTTPS and SSH) connections. Using yum with CentOS-2 mirrors

Hi all, I was having yum errors while updating our CentOS-2 box. Further reading lead me to a readme file on the mirrors (http://mirror.centos.org/centos-2/readme.txt) and it gave me the new URL to use for CentOS-2 mirrors. I have edited /etc/yum.conf with the new URLs but I'm still having issues with yum giving me "ValueError: unpack list of wrong size" errors. Has anyone been able to update their yum configuration to be still able to use yum? How were you able to configure it? I understand that CentOS-2 has now reached its EOL but we have a legacy application that won't run on newer distros. -- Stand before it and there is no beginning. Follow it and there is no end. Stay with the ancient Tao, Move with the present.

External Backup Systems?

Hey everyone, My home server just had a disk failure a few weeks ago and like a lot of people I haven't ever really made backups on a regular basis. So I was looking into backup solutions which will save me from this situation again. Now I have Bacula setup, and backing up my files onto my home server. Although this works great, I have one issue: The disk in my server was the one that actually failed, and so, even with RAID1, could fail again. So to get around this I wanted to backup to external media aswell. I don't really think external hard drives are that great considering they are just as reliable as internal hard drives which would be pointless as RAID1 should be reliable enough in that case. Backing up to DVDs are quite unreliable too, a simple scratch could render the backup useless. Also it would require quite a lot of DVDs to backup my data (at least 500GB!). The only other option I could think of is to use tapes, but this option can be quite pricy for a home user. So I was wondering what you guys use for external backups for a home system containing at least 500GB worth of important data? Regards Hamzah -- M. rsync not getting all files?

I ran rsync on a combination of Ubuntu and CentOS systems and it doesn't seem to grab all files, such as .cshrc or .bashrc (and they do exist). This makes me wonder what other files rsync may be missing, and how do I tell rsync to grab those missing files? Thanks.

Dependency Hell!

I am in dependency HELL Trying to install keypassx for CentOS. All of my other systems have it and have to use it for work. Great little component however Had to reformat my linux box and start over. (next time make backup!_ very nice)

Been trying to figure out what in the screwball world is going on with this. Tried to install libqt4 and keep getting more dependencies and more dependencies on top of that. Just trying to install KepassX for i386 CentOS 5 Any help?

SUMMARY : multipath using defaults rather than multipath.conf contents for some devices (?) - why ?

The reason for the behaviour observed below turned out to be that the device entry in /etc/multipath.conf was inadvertently appended *after* the devices section , rather than inside it - so that we had #devices { # device { # blah blah # } (file has a bunch of defaults commented out) # etc #} # # device { our settings } *rather than* devices { device { our settings } } Also - looking more closely at our multipath.conf.defaults, there is an entry for a product pattern HSV2.* That would explain why the multipath settings for the HSV200 looked different to the HSV400 - the HSV200 was picking up a different set of defaults. However still not exactly what we had specified. (sort of like CSS behaviour....."cascading multipath.conf defaults" ! :-) ) You also possibly need to pay attention to the basic whitespace formatting of this file - for example I had noticed the above early on and rebooted with it "fixed" , only to find that this meant the system came up unable to even recognise the ext3 filesystem, complaining about bad superblock etc etc. After recovering from that ( see below) I went back ( a week later) and a) made sure that the whitespace - tabs etc - looked like the other commented out defaults and b) added in a second device entry (from the defaults section - not a device we even have) , just in case there was some bug relating to having only one device entry in the "devices" section. Whether because of those or some other change, the system now comes up fine, and with multipath -ll now reporting the correct settings for the HSV400. So issue resolved finally. Touch wood. Here is a useful tip (not news to gurus but was to me ) : when things turn to custard on reboot and everything including the root filesystem is mounted readonly - so you can't even restore multipath.conf to the backup you made before rebooting - you can mount -n -o remount / to remount / as writeable - then you can cd /etc cp multipath.conf.bu1 multipath.conf and breathe a big sigh of relief ! If there are any multipath developers reading this - it could be handy if multipath could log some diagnostic info about how it parses the conf file , and exactly what entry it ends up using , which would then appear in /var/log/messages and /var/log/dmesg, since it seems relatively easy to end up matching a device spec you didn't expect, and the effects on performance are subtle so easy to overlook this. [snip other HSV200 paths - all similar] multipath -ll -v 3 includes explicit statements that defaults are being used for the HSV400 (long output snipped...) sdaa: path checker = readsector0 (config file default) versus sda: path checker = tur (controller setting) sdx: getprio = NULL (internal default) versus sdd: getprio = /sbin/mpath_prio_alua %n (controller setting) - furthermore we see in the log file messages from both readsector0 *and* tur rather than just tur if the correct settings were used , which also backs that up. My questions are basically - why is it happening , and how to fix it ? The vendor and product regexps definitely do match both "HSP" and both "HSV200" and "HSV400" respectively so it doesn't seem that fiddling with the patterns will work , and I'm sure this config has been tested. Its not due to this server having to deal with two controllers - we have a second server that only mounts from the HSV400, and its multipath settings appear to be entirely the defaults, and not what we have set. (And conversely, its not due to the conf file not being read at all - since the server with two controllers is using the correct config for one of them , but not the other.) thanks for any tips and I will summarise. mounting images created using dd that contain two partitions

Hi all, I am trying to mount images that I previously created with dd and the images have two partitions (swap and LVM). I use these images to house data for my Xen Guests. For some reason (possibly Kernel conflicts for paravirtualized domains) I am unable to boot my Guest images. Failing which I would like to mount the disk images and atleast get my data out of them. dd -o loop server.img /media/diskimage asks me to provide a file system. How can I mount these images? I have been Googling around for this and have failed to find and answer, can someone please point me in the right direction.
