How to disable wifi access to CentOS 7

Hello all -- I run a hard wired network connection from my box and I don't want/need any wifi connections trying to get to/from it. I came across this article from the RedHat Bugzilla site -- https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1530391 I would love to just uninstall NetworkManager-wifi as suggested in the last comment on this issue. The problem is when I try to do that, there's about 25 dependencies on this package! Any thoughts on how to get around this? Gnome-tweak-tool-3.28.1 Update Results in Black Screen

Hello all, The most recent update of Gnome-tweak-tool-3.28.1-2el7.2.noarch.rpm is causing a black screen at startup. After clicking on the menu in Grub I get a black screen. I've tried setting the "systemctl set-default multi-user.target" in the kernel parameters but still a black screen. I then tried the Rescue boot in Grub but again a black screen. This issue started after Gnome-tweak-tool was updated an hour ago. I had CentOS 7.6 running fine earlier this morning but after updating Gnome-tweak-tool just a black screen. Has anyone else come across this issue recently, and if so how did you fix it? I don't want to have to re-install CentOS 7.6. Thank you, Brian Bernard

Gantt chart software for CentOS 7 ?

Hi, I'm looking for a Gantt chart software that I can install easily on CentOS 7. I prefer EPEL - or some other third party repo - packages than some obscure installation script for home directories. Any suggestions ? nvidia on 7.6

I have elrepo installed. rpm -qa | grep elrepo gives elrepo-release-7.0.3.el7.elrepo.noarch nvidia detect (which installed) tells me kmod-nvidia-340xx when I do yum install kmod-nvidia-340xx it is saying no package kmod-nvidia-340xx available ? What did I miss? Thanks, Jerry

Testing software on CentOS 7

I need to test a new version of Geany but already have the repo version installed on all my systems. In order not to foul up my current installation, what is the suggested procedure for installing and testing this new version? I tried installing in a docker container which of course went fine but could not run it from there. Suggestions appreciated, thank you.

konqueror vs. centos and mathematics

I'm running centos 7. Firefox spends so much time in th D state that I am trying konqueror. Displaying mathematics on wikipedia, e.g. Remez algorithm seems to be a no go. Wikipedia seems to use tex, so I installed texlive and texlive-* . Firefox hadn't needed it and it did not seem to help konqueror. My guess is that there is a bit somewhere that I need to flip, but I have no idea where it is. PHP 7.x on CentOS 7 : which solution ?

Hi, As you all know, CentOS 7 is shipping PHP 5.4, which is OK in some situations. Unfortunately, some applications like OwnCloud require a more recent version of PHP. Up until recently, I've been using PHP 5.6 packages from the Webtatic repository. Despite the bad press this third party repo seems to have, it has been working perfectly for me for a few years. So I googled "php 7 centos 7" and found quite a wealth of - sometimes contradictory - information. 1. The "recommended" way of doing things seems to be the Red Hat Software Collections. Correct me if I'm wrong. I wonder if this way of doing things will enable me to get all the PHP modules listed above. 2. The use of Webtatic seems to be frowned upon. I still have to figure out why, since this repository has always worked perfectly for me. 3. Then there's another repository managed by Remi Collet. Any thoughts on that? And then there's also the question : which version of PHP 7 should I choose ? On my servers, I'm mainly hosting WordPress, Dolibarr and OwnCloud. Any suggestions ? I'm no lamer for doing a bit of RTFM, so a pointer to documentation will do. The problem is not so much that there is no information on the subject. It's rather : there's too much. compile question on CentOS 7

I am trying to use the fnmatch() function in a C program and pass as the 3rd arg (options) of case insensitive search... When I use the value FNM_CASEFOLD it does not work... I'm confused on what to send to fnmatch() to do a case insensitive search. Any pointers ? Thanks. Jerry

netmask set with ifconfig doesn't hold

I gather that ifconfig is a way of setting the netmask in the current shell instead of a persistent value. I say this because I am running it and see it for my specific network interface, directly after running it. However if I restart the network service the netmask is reverted to the previous value. What is the correct way to set the new netmask for the network interface to make it persistent. if it's different for CentOS 6 and 7 I'd like to know that too. FYI - I tried searching about this but none of the info has really helped so far. Also consider this like "changing netmask for dummies" since I am not an administrator and am just searching and trying these things. Thanks very much in advance.KM

read permission on rotated logs

When logs (e.g. /var/log/maillog) are rotated (e.g. to /var/log/maillog-YYYYMDD) is there a way via systemd or whatever to assign read permission to a specific group? Right now, for example - ls -l maillog* -rw------- 1 root root 3105240 Mar 13 22:04 maillog -rw------- 1 root root 1079031 Feb 24 04:39 maillog-20190224 -rw------- 1 root root 7237640 Mar 1 12:59 maillog-20190228 -rw------- 1 root root 1297508 Mar 3 04:21 maillog-20190303 -rw------- 1 root root 1319371 Mar 10 08:17 maillog-20190310 What I would like - ls -l maillog* -rw------- 1 root root 3105240 Mar 13 22:04 maillog -rw-r----- 1 root somegroup 1079031 Feb 24 04:39 maillog-20190224 -rw-r----- 1 root somegroup 7237640 Mar 1 12:59 maillog-20190228 -rw-r----- 1 root somegroup 1297508 Mar 3 04:21 maillog-20190303 -rw-r----- 1 root somegroup 1319371 Mar 10 08:17 maillog-20190310 That way a user in somegroup could run a script that analyzes the rotated logs w/o needing root privileges. Obviously I could put a script in /etc/cron.hourly that looks for rotated log files and changes ownership / permission, but I am wondering if there is a "proper" way to configure it via systemd or another utility.
