Does anyone know if Geany 1.34 is headed to one of the repositories? I am running version 1.31 and interested in the 1.33+ since the markdown plugin has apparently been updated.

Nvme m.2 disk problem

Hi list, I'm running Centos 7.6 on an Corsair Force MP500 120 GB. Root fs is ext4 and this drive is ~1 year old. System works very well except on boot. During boot process I got always a file system check on nvme drive. (48 entries not shown) I noticed that Unsafe shutdowns increased rapidly and I don't know why there is an unsafe shutdown. Every 3/4 boot this value is increased by 1 and I don't know why. Python 2.7.5 and GnuPG sig verify

I asked on stack overflow but I'm trying to boost the signal. I don't normally program in python but I can usually figure out how to do it when I need to, but I'm just stumped, there clearly is something I'm not understanding. It's a CentOS 7.6 box and python install I'm trying this on. thunderbird issues

Just updated t-bird, and once again, it wants to open a completely new browser, other than using the running one. I started searching, and found something about editing the config, and for the first one of the two they said to change, I find this: network.protocol-handler.app.https;/usr/lib64/thunderbird-3.1/open-browser.sh %s a) there's only /usr/lib64/thunderbird, and I'm on 60.something. Is this in my config as a user? is this something that should go away? Please don't tell me I have to create a whole new t-bird configuration.... mark

iptables 2 firewalld

Y'all may remember me fighting this a few weeks back. I did finally succeed, and thought that my awk script might be helpful to others. Yes, it's really simple, it uses the build-in FORWARD chain. The line where I skip the definition of those chains is because it *is* built in. To use it, I did an iptables-save on the firewall that's currently in use, changed the physdev devices to match the ones on the new box (I *loathe* that idiot varying name convention, it is *not* helpful, and then ran it through this script. I piped the o/p into a file, then sh scriptname did the actual install. Following that, I did firewall-cmd --reload, and all was wonderful, and I could ping the system inside the firewall, and from the subnet in our building (the new one's in the datacenter), but not from anywhere else, so the rules worked. Note that I did the work, I work for a US gov't federal contractor, so this was done on tax dollars, and should be free of any encumberment. Hope it helps, folks. Changing UID numbers

Hello everyone - I have a question regarding UID and GID numbers. First, a bit of background: Yesterday I suffered a complete power failure. My UPS batteries ran everything for an hour, but that was not long enough. My CentOS6 server shut itself down, just like it should. When the power came back up, the perfectly running server was no longer working. The boot hard drive was complete toast. ARGH! OK, I have backups and spare hard drives. CentOS6 is getting a bit long in the tooth. I have to reformat and reinstall CentOS before restoring backups anyway, so I decided now is the time to move to CentOS7. I chose to rip the bandage! The CentOS6 installation was quite old. Back in those days the default UID for new users was 500. That's how I set up my user account on the machine. My main workstation is Fedora 29, but it started life MANY cycles ago and also has my UID=500. That all works nicely with the nfs share coming off the server. On newer builds I have wrestled with having my UID=1000, as is the new standard. File permissions on the nfs share were never quite right. It was not irritating enough to make me desperate, but it was annoying. I got around it with a lot of 777 and 666 permissions settings. I looked at rpc-idmapd but was never able to make it work. Now with CentOS7 my server user account is UID=1000. The nfs share is on a separate drive (not the one that failed), and all of the files on it are still owned by UID=500. It works from my main workstation, but is really unclean. So now the questions: What will it take to change all the files to the new UID? What will it take to change my main workstation to the new UID **without** having to create a new user account? I think I can do this in two steps. 0) backup, backup, backup! 1) On the server - use "find" to find all files owned by UID=500. Chown them to UID=1000. Repeat for gid=500. 2) Tricky - On the workstation, boot to non-gui. Login as root. Repeat the same two "find" commands as on the server. Edit the /etc/passwd and /etc/group files to show the new UID and GID numbers. What does this do to the shadow files? Are there other places I need to look for the UID and GID numbers? Auth pam ldap and fail2ban

Hi, Fail2ban is logging false positive with authentication using pam ldap. What happen is a user login using his ldap password cause pam_unix to fail then pam_ldap log the user in. sshd filter for fail2ban read /var/log/secure see the pam_unix error, flag it even if the next line in the log says the login is successful. CentOS 7 with fail2ban 0.9.7 from EPEL. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks. Jimmy

what writes to /root/.cache/mesa ?

Dear All, I have several CentOS 7 machines (but not all of them) on which I have noticed that something gets written to /root/.cache/mesa every so often (once every several days). It is my understanding that mesa is related to GUI (X11), but on these machines (on neither of my machines, actually) root never logs in to GUI X11. I may have remote root logins with Xforwarding though. Hence my puzzle: what is that that writes to /root/.cache/mesa? Some, but not all of occasions seem to happen upon machine [re]boots. Thanks. A while ago when people started demanding to have google chrome browser installed on their workstations I had hard time to get rid of google's cron jobs that were writing where only root should - without explicit permission to do so. Dough. Somebody's software thinks it is smarter than everyone who uses it...
