Upgrading Server Motherboard

I have a server running CentOS 4.2 that works as a web/email with very heavy load. It runs Directadmin web gui which is like Cpanel. It runs on a cheapy mATX motherboard(ECS 741GX-M) with socket A 2800+ CPU and 2Gbyte DDR. The OS and data are on a 300Gbyte PATA maxtor drive and data backups are run weekly to another PATA drive. The server is overwelmed and data backups take over 5 hours to complete. I have a Tyan(K8E) server board now that is socket 939 with SATA support. Maxtor makes a utillity that will copy there drives so I bought a second identical PATA drive and plan on copying it so if I screw something up it will be a backup copy and not the critical original. >My first question is can I simply plug this drive into the new faster motherboard and have it just boot up and run? >Next, should I get a dual core CPU or just a fast single core? Most of the load on this server is due to Spamassassin dealing with about 2000 email accounts. Although it also serves up websites that is pretty minor load I beleive since they do not get all that many hits. >I was told up2date will update this server too 4.4. Problem is that the Directadmin GUI is a bit touchy. Any modifications to the services its married to could be bad. I really need to talk to there tech support on this. >My new server motherboard is socket 939 and supports DDR 400. It was a bargin off ebay but appears to work fine. Would I be better off getting a socket AM2 that supports DDR2 or will that make much difference in performance? The 939 motherboard supports a max of 4Gbyte DDR too. >I also purchased a Seagate SATA 500Gbyte drive. The 300G PATA drive is just under half full. I imagine mostly email. Mailboxes for the most part have 50M cap but there alot of them and still adding more. Is there anyway to copy the OS installed on the PATA to a larger and faster SATA drive? I am doubting this since the drives place/mnt in /dev will change. I know the best solution is to install CentOS 4.4 on new box, install Directadmin, and then backup and restore to new server but that will result in substantial downtime that I am trying to get out off. Plus a lot of work. The Directadmin install has been heavilly customized and I will need to remember what I all did to it. Actually I may still do that but I would like to move to a faster motherboard first so just maybe the backups run faster. Thanks for any help or advice. Matthew

Centos 4.0 (Final) and Dell 1950 with SAS controller

Hi All, I have an "appliance" cd which uses CentOS 4.0 (Final) which I am trying to load on a new Dell 1950 server with a SAS driver controller. During the install it fails to find any disks to load to. I got the drivers from Dell and dd the correct one to a floppy, boot from the appliance cd and enter linux dd at the prompt. I load the driver in the install and it still fails to find any disks. I have looked at the virtual consoles after the module disk and I see some strange information: failed to open /tmp/drivers/modules.pcimap: no such file or directory failed to open /tmp/drviers/pci.ids: no such file or directory ..... modules to insert mptbase mptscsih mptsas module(s) mptbase mptscsih mptsas not found So the driver disk is loading but....it can't find the modules. So my question is could that be why the modules can not be found? If so what changes do I need to make to this driver disk to get working on CentOS 4.0? Printer job control

What do I have to change to allow ANY user to control ANY print job? Having this locked on a workstation with a local printer attached just makes me want to take Centos and throw it across the room, especially when I can't even stop my own print jobs when something goes wrong. This has already cost me considerable money in wasted ink. This should be a check-box somewhere, or else a simple .rpm to download and run that would take care of this. Ted Miller Indiana

Understanding cpuspeed/cpufreq

[I sent this to the RHEL4 list - but maybe someone on this list knows more] I have a number of dual CPU and dual CPU/dual core Opteron systems that are used as compute servers. In an effort to reduce power consumption and reduce heat output, I would like to make use of the PowerNow! capabilities to clock back the CPUs when the machines are idle. These machines are running a 2.6.9-42 RHEL4 kernel However, in my tests so far in using the cpuspeed daemon or setting the kernel cpufeq governor to 'ondemand', the CPU will clock back their frequencies in situations where one or more CPUs are being heavily used i.e not what I want. Having a look through the cpuspeed daemon src (there is no man page), it forks a separate process to monitor each CPU - however, AFAIK it is not possible to runs these CPUs at different speeds - so it appears that when one of the daemons decides it should clock back 'its' CPU, all the CPUs are clocked back ... regardless of the fact that one or more of the other CPUs may be busy. Something similar seems to be happening using the various cpufreq governors - configuration is available for all CPUs separately (under /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuN/cpufreq). i.e. it appears you can configure settings for each CPU independently, but in reality all CPUs must run at the same speed. Essentially what I want to achieve is something like: if _any_ CPU is 'busy' (usage over some threshold over some sampling period), then run at full speed and if _all_ CPUs are 'idle' (all below some threshold over some sampling period) then clock back the CPUs. Is there something/some setting(s) that can do this? Thanks James Pearson

chkrootkit reporting possible LKM trojan

How can I be sure if it is LKM or not? Today I've run chkrootkit and it gave me: Checking `lkm'... The computer has just been restarted, and I have just opened those su sessions. There are also some "hidden files", all of them named .packlist and .exists. Everything else is fine. rkhunter looks fine. " rpm -Va kernel* " looks fine. Remote users access are being controlled through /etc/ssh/sshd_config in a user-host fashion. Selective Sendmail Relaying.

Hi all, I've been trying to hit on the right configuration combo to allow relaying from specific users and/or domains to an internal box running Sendmail. Reading the docs at http://www.sendmail.org/m4/anti_spam.html#relay and http://www.sendmail.org/m4/anti_spam.html#access_db_fine I would appear that I should be able to all per-address relaying in /etc/mail/access by enabling FEATURE(`relay_mail_from')dnl in sendmail.mc and restarting Sendmail. Then adding test(a)testdomain.com to /etc/access as: From:test@testdomain.com RELAY Should allow relaying FROM this address, yet it doesn't seem to work for me on a CentOS 4.4 system and I can't quite hit on why. ClamAV Installation

Hi All, I try to installed ClamAV using rpm from Karan.org repository but I can't find the clamd.conf and freshclam.conf file. After listing the file installed by using rpm -ql | grep clamav, I observe that it was really not included in the installation. Did I miss something here? If possible, I want to use RPM based installation for easy maintenance and also based on your suggestions from my prior posting, I don't know much configuring ClamAV and will use the confif file as basis for my setup. 64-bit Java?

Hi folks, Stupid question time, possibly only tangentially related to CentOS, and I apoligise in advance. I have a bunch of CentOS 64-bit boxes, and I have developers who want to run eclipse on these boxes. So I have downloaded the 64-bit bundle of eclipse, installed the java from java.sun.com, and the result is that Eclipse won't run. It chugges away and then reports: $ /tools/ecad/local/eclipse_64/eclipse -vm /usr/java/jre1.5.0_10/bin/java !ENTRY org.eclipse.osgi 4 0 2006-12-19 11:20:01.634 !MESSAGE Application error !STACK 1 java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /home/uxilium/.eclipse/org.eclipse.platform_3.2.0/configuration/org.eclipse.osgi/bundles/568/ 1/.cp/libswt-pi-gtk-3235.so: Can't load AMD 64-bit .so on a IA 32-bit platform So clearly I have a 32-bit Java on my 64-bit platform. However I cannot see any 64-bit java to install.
