Kernel ELsmp vs EL

Hi all, I'm not very used to CentOS and Linux generally speaking, though I read a lot and 'man' quickly became a very good friend of mine, right after Google, so sorry if that's a ridiculous one! (at least it'll give you a good laugh!) I updated the kernel to 2.6.9-42.0.2 recently and that raised a question... Simple... Yet silly...! What exactly is the difference between 2.6.9-42.0.2EL and 2.6.9-42.0.2ELsmp? It seems the default install was the 'smp' kernel, but as I had to change the grub config I stumbled across this one and... started wondering... The CentOS team is pleased to announce our newest team member, Ralph Angenendt (range on IRC). Ralph will start out co-ordinating articles on the CentOS Wiki and manage the new centos-docs mailing list (which will be used to submit articles and write request access to the CentOS Wiki). Has anyone else had any problems with getting wifi to work after upgrade ? I am using ipw2200 on an HP laptop - was working under 4.3 Ian

sorry make you confusing.the problem is i know how to mount but i do't know how to let system surpport ntfs format. after i installed the packege kernel-module-ntfs-2.6.9-22.ELsmp-2.1.20-0.rr.9.10.i686.rpm the system did't surpport the ntfs.seem i need to recomplie the kernel. help me!

I am migrating from Mandriva to Centos (currently running dual boot). One thing I miss on Centos is being able to switch to Console 12 and see system messages in real time. My IPCop firewall has this turned on as well. Is this a setting I can change, or a program I can add, or is it not available? Ted Miller

New mailing list and wiki contribution

Have some Tips and Tricks for doing stuff the easy (and right) way? Ever wanted to do that writeup of what you achieved with spec files? What about that news server howto in the upper drawer of your desk? That apache tuning paper on your computer? Your shortcut collection for Gnome? Or whatever might help people with using CentOS? This is your chance: We're looking for contributors to the CentOS wiki, for people who want to spread their knowledge to other users, for people who actually like writing documentation. Want to do it? It's easy. Head over to <http://wiki.centos.org/>. Find out where *your* contribution fits best. Create a Login on that page with a username in the format FirstnameLastname. Then subscribe to the centos-docs mailing list at <http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos-docs>. After going through the subscription stuff write a mail to centos-docs(a)centos.org in which you describe *what* you want to put *where* on the wiki. If you know which name that page should get - that's even better. Someone of the Wiki Admins will then create that page for you and give you edit permissions. Et voilà - you can create your page. Once you have contributed more than a little content and have shown a desire to keep it up(dated), we'll open up edit permissions for you. Okay, I lied. It's not really easy. Believe us, we would like to have an open wiki where everyone can edit pages by just creating a login and then going ahead. But it's not possible for us to scan the wiki for changes all the time. Say thanks to the spammers who "contribute" everywhere they are able to. About the mailing list: It's not only for contributing to the wiki, but also for discussing about articles (i.e. article quality) on the wiki - and possibly also for discussion about general CentOS documentation. postfix pb with mass emails

Hi I'm hosting a forum (phpbb) with more than 3500 users with centos 4.3. The forum admins would like to send an email to its (3500) users. I configured phpbb to use smtp (postfix-2.1.5-4.2.RHEL4.mysql.centos4) to send the email. I raised the max destination limit from 1000 to 5000, and made a test. Here the disaster began: Majority of the users received from 20 to 50 emails. Looking at the logs, postfix divided the email into several ones with 50 recipient each (as documented). I think the problem was that when one of the recipients was unreachable, the mail went into defered state, to be retried later. The problem (bug?) is that the mail was sent again to all 50 recipients, explaining why so many users received lot of mails. Anyone had a similar problem? Any suggestion for that? Regards Sophana

After update to 4.4, sshd chroot misconfigured

I started seeing messages like this in logs after I applied the 4.3 to 4.4 update: 192.168.0.20 sshd[25622]: Postponed publickey for barney from ::ffff:192.168.0.12 port 40291 ssh2 Some googling revealed that the version of sshd I am now running is chrooted, but the chroot environment is incomplete. Problems with D-Link DGE-530T and skge module on Centos 4.3

How to find differences in Centos Builds

Good Afternoon, Long story short I recently upgraded my CentOS 4.4 from: 2.6.9-34.0.2.EL to 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL and am having problems with dhcp, dns and ftp (very funky nat setup, don't ask). My question is: What is the best way of troubleshooting issues after upgrading? Is there a list of changes between versions that I can look at somewhere? (obviously, but where?) I've already done a diff between kernel variables(net.ipv4.*) and found some differences. I've also taken a look at which packages yum has updated in the process. Am I going to have to go through changelogs for each package to find out what I'm looking for? There are no kernel panics, no obvious errors and all services appear to start fine....
