getfullcomps.py

Just started trying to build Centos 4.x based distros (was doing this with Centos 3.x before), and I noticed that getfullcomps.py is gone from the comps-extras package. Is this no longer necessary? How does one automate the building of the comps.xml file now? Any pointers to new docs, because the old ones seem to still mention getfullcomps.py? Thanks...james

Hi there. Installed CentOS4 and was going through the process list and noticed this entry. root 2440 2428 0 12:18 ? 00:00:00 x 1 0 What is it and why does it have such a mysterious entry? Thanks.

Indiana timezone changing

I have a couple questions... I am in Indiana and our time zone is changing. I used to choose America/Indiana/Indianapolis as the zone and we are changing to Eastern. Question 1) Is there a command line only way to change my timezone? I dont have access to X to run system-config-time. Doing a "system-config-time --help" or "system-config-time -h" did not give any information. Question 2) If the server is setup for NTP I presume I still have to change the time zone. Since Indiana-East is going away are the NTP time servers smart enough to know that Indiana-East is now just Eastern? Basically - do I have to change anything on my machines or does NTP just do it for me? Thanks, Jerry

mdadm and smtp yum update issue

greetings i have a newer centos 4.2 server using qmail for smtp the /etc/yum.conf has this in it exclude=spamassassin exim postfix sendmail so when i do a yum update to go to 4.3 i get this --> Running transaction check --> Processing Dependency: smtpdaemon for package: mdadm --> Finished Dependency Resolution Error: Missing Dependency: smtpdaemon is needed by package mdadm how should i procede from here? evidentally mdadm wants a known smtp function as i do not get this error until i stuff exim and postfix and sendmail in the exclude should i undo exim in /etc/yum.conf exclude and then after exim is installed then remove it? with rpm -e --nodeps exim or another way? yum remove exim or? thanks in advance... - rh -- Robert Hanson - Abba Communications Computer & Internet Services (509) 624-7159 - www.abbacomm.net

ATI Radeon IGP 350M resolution problems

My HP 4010 and the IGP 350M video card. I can only get it to go into 800x600 mode. At one time, Resolution Display (gnome desktop) was giving me an option of 1024x768 and if I selected it the monitor went crazy. Now I don't even get that higher resolution as an option. I have searched far and wide for information on this card and the Radeon linux driver. No help at all. My /etc/sysconf/hwconf has: class: VIDEO bus: PCI detached: 0 driver: Card:ATI Radeon IGP330M/340M/350M desc: "ATI Technologies Inc Radeon IGP 330M/340M/350M" vendorId: 1002 deviceId: 4337 subVendorId: 0e11 subDeviceId: 005a pciType: 1 pcidom: 0 pcibus: 1 pcidev: 5 pcifn: 0 I might suspect that changing one of those values will give what I want. But I cannot find any information on what this all means. I have also read where some 3x0M owners have switched to the generic VESA driver with better success. I tried that and did not get a 1024x768 option to even try. Oh, I also tried the SystemTools -> Display utility, (this is what I used to switch drivers) and it also did not offer 1024x768. help? Pointers?

Anaconda seems to exclusively build off of the hdlist, so you would have to rebuild it if you want to come out of the anaconda install with a fully patched system. I do this for Centos4 with no major problems. If you like, I can send you the commands that you need to run to do this. I actually keep a full package respository locally for Centos, and nightly pull down all the updates, and rebuild the hdlist, and yum headers. When I build servers, I use kickstart off of my own repository. 0 -> fully patched centos4 server in 5 - 10 minutes, depending on what is installed =). Method for autoinstalling new updates at install time (or very near to it)

I have CentOS 4.3 as well as RHEL4u3 and FC5 setup on my PXE/HTTP Server automating the install process. However, I'd also like to apply any post update RPMS during installation also. Is there any easy method to do this with out having to recreate the hdlist and other installation files? My desire would be to have a updates directory that I can put packages into and CentOS would check to see if a newer version of the RPM exists in /updates. Any thoughts? My goal is to get away from the need to download 200+ megabytes of updates after each install. I know I could setup my own yum updates server and then point each new install at that instead of the mirrors but I wanted something slightly more automated. Can anyone else tell me how their doing this? Jay

dovecot vs Cyrus-Imapd

I'm just preparing to build a new mail server for use at an ISP handling over 10,000 mailboxes and several domains. We're currently using Qmail, but we'd like to move away from that since we have now changed our inbound mail systems over to Postfix. Postfix will be receiving the mail, and I'm trying to decide between Dovecot and Cyrus-Imapd for the POP & IMAP service. Does anybody have any advice or opinions about which of these two packages would be better for a large installation. I'd prefer if the package could tie into MySQL for user authentication, and all mailboxes will be virtual in the sense that they won't have local system accounts. Thanks for your help. Bob.

Server spontaneously rebooting under RHEL-4

Hey, y'all! :) I've got an RHEL-4 server (yep, I know it's not CentOS, but hey we gotta send some money RH's way to keep CentOS up and going! ) that's running Oracle 10g. This same hardware worked just fine for over a year running RHEL-AS-2.1 and Oracle 9i. Now we're getting spontaneous reboots when running oracle processes that eat up a bunch of resources. I don't know where to go from here. It's got dual hyper-threading processors set to hyperthreading mode, and I understand that the 2.6 kernel used to have HT issues, but I thought that'd been solved. The kernel we're running is: 2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp (yeah, not the latest, I haven't had a chance lately to test and update the patches).
