packaging local builds

I have built software on unix/Linuix many times, but now I want to move two packages that I have built on one machine to another (both CentOS4.2), and the time seems ripe to discover how to use rpm. The packages are subversion-1.3.0 and swig-1.3.28. How do I turn the the results of the build process into rpms? installation via telnet

Hello, Is it possible to do a telnet installation of centos 4.x? When i was using fc3 that was doable with a command at the boot prompt like: telnet ip=address netmask=mask gateway=address ksdevice=/dev/eth0 this works now, i.e. the box's ip comes up on the network, pinging it works, but a telnet connection from another unix box immediately gets a connection closed by foreign host msg and all further atempts are refused. yum update killed on cleanup stage - anything to worry about?

Hello everyone, I had to kill yum while it's on the cleanup stage (somehow it stalled so i killed it). Should I be worried about anything in this situation? If so, how do I go about fixing it? SPARC

Hello, I just wanted to get an idea of whats going on with the SPARC port. I tried to get the ISO provided on the website going with a Sun Blade 100 and hung each in one of two places each time I booted the cd. Thanks, Anthony

point release security updates?

I have a question regarding security updates for Centos 4. If you are currently running older point releases for example CentOS 4.1 or 4.2, do you have to upgrade to CentOS 4.3 to be able to get the latest security updates or can you simply stick to the old point release? I notice that there is sendmail update in 4.3 but not in 4.2 Cheers, Chris

Advice on upgrading packages

Hi all, Regarding packages updates using yum, all this time I only upgrade packages that I think is important, but also at the same time is having little risk of breaking my installation. Such as httpd, ssh, etc. But there are many packages that waits to be updated such as lvm, mdadm, etc. I'm worried that it will break my installation (web and mail server). Like the saying "if it ain't broken, don't fix it". Is there any pitfall that I should avoid of when upgrading packages using yum? Or is it completely save to let yum update the machine automatically? Radeon 7000 woes, redux

The Radeon 7000 and the X.org radeon driver have had some well publicized difficulties since CentOS 4.2 (aka RHEL4U2). In short, the 7000 would hang miserably, often completely killing the console. See, e.g., https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=170008 On Nov 29, 2005, Red Hat's Mike Harris announced the testing release of xorg-x11-6.8.2-1.EL.13.21, which ended up solving the problems with my video subsystem. That ticket was later marked closed with an errata release of the xorg-x11 packages: http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2006-0072.html I installed that upgrade (xorg-x11-6.8.2-1.EL.13.25) when it was made available via yum, but never not around to rebooting until the recent 4.3 release. My (PCI, not AGP) Radeon 7000 went on strike again! The console crashes aren't as fatal this time around -- the screen is a mess, but the keyboard and mouse still respond to input (though I can't see what I'm typing) -- but they still render the console unusable. For now, I've reinstalled the radeon_drv.so from Mike Harris' xorg-x11-6.8.2-1.EL.13.21 interim release -- which, thankfully, I've kept around, because they are no longer available in Mike's chunk of people.redhat.com -- and that's solved the problem. I'll try to send a real bug report once I can isolate what may have changed between .21 and .25, but for now I thought I'd just send a general problem description. -- Paul Heinlein <heinlein(a)madboa.com>

Naming packages in custom yum repo.

I need to setup a custom yum repo to supply some packages that are not in CentOS, and some that are but have been patched and/or are different versions. Not much of a big deal. In order to limit conflict with CentOS packages, I am using a prefix other than /usr. All my packages that also have existing versions in CentOS are installed under this new prefix to prevent any conflict with the CentOS package. My main issue is I would like yum (and rpm) to be happy with this coexistence. Is the only way to do this by giving my packages a different name rather than just twiddling the release number? For example, CentOS has libpcap-0.8.3, I need to supply a patched libpcap-0.8.4 but I don't want it to replace the 0.8.3 package, so I've modified the package name to be like <something>.libpcap-0.8.3... I know this may same weird, but is prefixing the package name a sane approach to this? On a related note, I also supply a modified kernel and I don't want yum to replace the kernel when its updated on a CentOS mirror. Is the best way to do this with a the ignore option in the yum repo configuration? Thanks, Jason

Bind Recursion and Sendmail

Seems that bind by default allows recursion and it's not a good idea. I'm struggling a bit on a couple of systems. These two systems run sendmail and are nameservers. I have sendmail set to do domain lookups and bounce if the domain does not exist. My struggle has been to turn recursion off in bind while allowing sendmail to do these lookups. I've been trying to do this by setting up allow-recursion in the options section of named.conf. Using something like allow-recursion {192.1.1.0/24; 192.34.2.6; }; The IPs have been changed to protect the innocent...... Bind is happy with the entry.. sendmail is not and starts bouncing email. Does anybody have this working and have any hints? I've googled and tested for hours.... Best, John Hinton
