file command returns incorrect MIME type?

Here's the problem: [ben@kepler tmp]# file -i presentation.ppt presentation.ppt: application/msword I see lots of references to this problem, (EG: IMP, PHP bug, etc) all of which conclude, in various forms, "the problem is in your /usr/share/magic.mime, go away". But nowhere (that I've been able to find) is there actually a solution - and even the magic.mime file from the latest tar (downloaded from astron.com) didn't fix it, either. The magic file in the apache directory seems to come up with the answer of: no answer. When you access a ppt in apache, it comes back with a generic response rather than "application/powerpoint" Any ideas? -Ben -- "The best way to predict the future is to invent it." - XEROX PARC slogan, circa 1978

I prefer to run postfix rather than sendmail.. Scalix is based on the HP Openmail system. It's pretty much a complete replacement of the MTA. No postfix. I'm installing it for a small business. They use lookout for the client. This thing rocks. Shared calendar, public folders. All this stuff just works. I was able to integrate spamassassin and clamav with it also. The webmail access is really good too. They use tomcat5 for all the web stuff. All the administration is done via the java web interface. There is command line stuff I'm starting to scratch the surface on. I've installed community edition 9.4.2 and 10 on centos4. Good luck. Cheers, Tim

Problem with oracle&httpd...

Hi, I have CentOS 4.2 installed on my PC and I've successfully installed Oracle 10g along with apache web server(httpd) and perl-DBD-Oracle. The problem is trying to connect to oracle to oracle from a CGI script. I defined all of the environment variables(ORACLE_HOME, LD_LIBRARY_PATH, PERL5LIB) in httpd.conf as well as apachectl scripts but I am getting the following error in the logs: ========================================= [Fri Mar 03 00:31:25 2006] [error] [client 192.168.251.6] Can't load '/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.5/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/DBD/Oracle/Oracle.so' for module DBD::Oracle: libclntsh.so.10.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory at /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.5/i386-linux-thread-multi/DynaLoader.pm line 230. ============================================ Also I disabled SELlinux, defined all of the above mentioned env variables in /etc/profile but now use. One weird thing is that as a standalone perl script I can connect to oracle but not through CGI. Can any one please suggest what's going wrong or what am I missing? thanks in advance, Siv

Filesystems, GRUB, weirdness, oh my! [long]

I am using SystemImager to auto-install about 500 different machines, some of them are CentOS; as you can Imagine I want to automate the installation of the bootloader; so I wrote a 2 scripts to accomplish this task. Why two? Because some of the machines are IDE, and some of them are SATA, and I need to be able to use the same disk image on both of the drive types. Here is the first bash script: if grep -q sda /proc/diskstats then TYPE="sda1" MOUNT1="/dev/sda1 /a/boot" MOUNT2="/dev/sda3 /a" else TYPE="hda1" MOUNT1="/dev/hda1 /a/boot" MOUNT2="/dev/hda3 /a" fi mount $MOUNT2 mount $MOUNT1 MOUNT3="proc /a/proc -t proc -o defaults" mount $MOUNT3 MKSYS="-p /a/sys" MOUNT4="sysfs /a/sys -t sysfs -o defaults" mkdir $MKSYS mount $MOUNT4 MOUNT5="/dev /a/dev -o bind" mount $MOUNT5 echo "mount $MOUNT2" echo "mount $MOUNT1" cp /sbin/grubinstall /a/sbin/grubinstall chmod 755 /a/sbin/grubinstall chmod +x /a/sbin/grubinstall chroot /a /sbin/grubinstall exit 0 What this does is determines whether the drive is SATA or IDE by looking at diskstats, if it is SATA, it mounts /dev/sda1 & /dev/sda3, if it is IDE, it mounts /dev/hda1 & /dev/hda3, it also creates and mounts all of the auxillary filesystems (proc, sys, dev) The next script which I run in the CentOS environment via chroot is: TYPE= SUBS= if grep -q sda /proc/diskstats then TYPE="sda1" SUBS="s/hda/sda/g" else TYPE="hda1" SUBS="s/sda/hda/g" fi grub-install --no-floppy --recheck /dev/$TYPE sed -i "$SUBS" /boot/grub/menu.lst echo "sed -i $SUBS /boot/grub/menu.lst" sed -i "$SUBS" /etc/fstab echo "sed -i $SUBS /etc/fstab" sed -i "$SUBS" /boot/grub/grub.conf echo "sed -i $SUBS /boot/grub/grub.conf" sed -i "$SUBS" /etc/grub.conf echo "sed -i $SUBS /etc/grub.conf" ls "ls -l /etc/grub.conf /boot/grub/grub.conf /boot/grub/menu.lst" exit 0 By the way /a is the ROOT of the hard drive (freshly imaged) and /a/boot is the boot partition of the hard drive (freshly imaged). This script again enumerates the type of hard disk attached to the system, installs grub on /dev/hda1 or /dev/sda1, modifies /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/grub.conf /etc/fstab /etc/grub.conf sda>hda hda>sda and so forth. Everything actually works fine; grub is installed; the files are all modified appropriately. The issue comes when the newly imaged system comes up. The first time the system boots up; grub is still configured to boot with root=/dev/sda3; even though NONE of the configuration files mention anything about /dev/sda3. However if I hit 'E' and modify the 'kernel ...' line in the grub editor from the bootloader, and allow it to boot up; the system boots up normally. The STRANGE part; is that after the first time it boots off of /dev/hda3; grub suddenly starts using that EVERY time the system boots; but I cant figure out why I have to first manually change it; and then reboot before it will work. Its almost like the CentOS boot process 'fixes' whatever is wrong with grub; the first time it boots after I run my crazy script on it; but I cant figure out what process during the boot is doing it; or what else I need to do to ensure trouble free auto-installation of CentOS, the reason I am asking you all is because that same script appears to work with a few other distributions. Any advice anyone can give me would be wonderful. Thanks, -Drew

Problem with large tar file.

I have just completed installing CentOS 4.2 (I came over here from Fedora-Land (core-3)). I did this via a fresh install. I tar'd everything to an external drive reinstalled the new stuff and everything is working very well. I've just got one issue. I have a full system backup Backup.tar that has a size of 78,717,880,320. When I issue the command tar -xvf Backup.tar I get only about 111MB of data restored. Basically /root and a couple other odd things of little consequence. I did have a second backup made with cp -pR <stuff> <dest> so I've still got my all my stuff from which I can selectivly restore as needed but I'm wondering why tar didn't work? (While being very glad I made two backups.) Is there a max size limit to a tar file? A bug in tar? Curiosity plagues me. Thanks for any help.

LV0 = 300MB (/boot) LV1 = 500MB (swap) LV2 = 9.2GB (/) LV3 = 70GB (/home) This way everything is mirrored and everything is in one VG. If you need more space, add another pair of mirrored drives and add the new mirrored device into VolGroup00. Then you can use the space to expand whichever filesystem needs it. I would also advise following the previous poster's advice and leaving a few GB unused so that you aren't forced to add more drives immediately when LV2 fills up faster than you expected. -- Bowie
