hosts fail to negotiate 1000Mbps speed

I am trying to connect two workstations (CentOS 3&4) directly using a straight through cat 5e cable with a crossover adapter on one of the ends. Both hosts have gigabit-capable ethernet card. According to lspci host 1 has: 03:0e.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82545EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) (rev 01) and host 2 has: 05:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8050 Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 17) In order to get this controller work on host 2, I had to download and install a more recent version of the sk98lin driver. Host 2 runs CentOS 4. Host 1 runs CentOS 3 (with a stock e1000 driver). After I setup networking, ethtool reported for both hosts that the link runs at 100Mbps even though it says in both cases that the capability for 1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full modes and exists and is being advertised. If I force 1000Mbps speed with "ethtool -s eth1 speed 1000", I get: # ethtool eth1 Settings for eth1: Supported ports: [ TP ] Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full Supports auto-negotiation: Yes Advertised link modes: 1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full Advertised auto-negotiation: No Speed: Unknown! (65535) Duplex: Unknown! (255) Port: Twisted Pair PHYAD: 0 Transceiver: internal Auto-negotiation: on Supports Wake-on: g Wake-on: g and the eth1 link stops working. What could be a problem here? I tried loading both drivers with the parameter for 1000Mbps speed parameters but that didn't help. ( I used on host 1, alias eth1 e1000 Speed=1000 host 2, alias eth1 sk98lin Speed_A=1000 Speed_B=1000) -akop

how to gui on centos ?

hi guys, what command will i type in to put me on the gui part of centos? this is my first time to use it. i've been using fedora before and the command was startx. what is the equivalent for centos? --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? With a free 1 GB, there's more in store with Yahoo! Mail.

Hi I am trying to find a good PCI 64 SSI 320 raid controller to use with Centos & 4 10k drives as raid 1 & 0 to get the best I/O speed, any clues as to what people have found to be the best. Thanks Denis

Hidden networking device configuration

I am trying to configure load balancing for a couple of CentOS4 servers. In order to make it work, I need to add a hidden networking device on each server with the virtual IP. I found the following instructions on linuxvirtualserver.org for doing this, but they don't work. echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward ifconfig dummy0 0.0.0.0 up echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/all/hidden echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/dummy0/hidden ifconfig dummy0:0 172.26.20.110 up When I try to write to /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/all/hidden, the system refuses to let me create the file. I'm logged in as root, so why am I having permission problems? Also, I believe these instructions are for 2.2 or 2.4 kernels. Have things changed with 2.6? -- Bowie

SubVersion on CentOS 4.2

I am new to linux based version control systems and am setting up a new project in Rails which will use SubVersion. I set up a repository for this project in a directory called /var/spool/svn and ran svnadmin create etc. I did all this while su'ed to root, however all programming will be done by non-privileged users. To provide for this I created a group called "svn", added the np userids to that secondary group and chgrp'ed the svn repository to have the guid set to "svn". However, attempts to use svn by np userids failed with references to ra_local and BDB access violations. What I discovered is that the default file modes established by svnadmin create do not give w access to the guid, only to the uuid. I therefore issued a chmod -R g+w * in the /var/spool/svn directory and svn thereafter worked as desired for privileged and non-privileged userids alike. My questions are three (four): 1. Is this behaviour (limiting access to a central svn depository to a single userid) intentional? (If so then why?) 2. Have I created future problems by loosening svn access to such an extent? 3. Using fedora's kernel on centos

Hi, The latest fedora kernel already has the CONNMARK support. I'd like to use it in my centos 4.2 server. I know it is not as stable as the 2.6.9.x the comes with centos but it is an alternative to using the vanilla kernel. I've managed to rebuild the rpm of the FC4 kernel in my Centos server but when trying to install I get Failed dependencies: mkinitrd >= 4.2.15-1 is needed by kernel-2.6.14-1.1656_FC4.root.i686 selinux-policy-targeted < 1.23.16-1 conflicts with kernel-2.6.14-1.1656_FC4.root.i686 Any suggestions?

Two ethernet adapters and more

I am running Asterisk@home on one of my systems here. It uses Centos 4.2. It does NOT have a GUI interface. Command line only at console or via SSH (yeah, I know that I was working on another server to get GUI tools working through SSH, but I am NOT going to muck with AAH build). yum update is potentially dangerous, when it replaces the kernel. You can loose all of your Zaptel driver setups and have to rebuild them. This is a given, the first time you install AAH and run yum update.... Now at http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk%40Home+Handbook+Wiki+Chapter+3 I was instructed to use NETCONFIG to setup up my network information. Well it did for eth0, but not for eth1. So question #1 is how to use netconfig to setup eth1 without messing with eth0. #2) NETCONFIG did not setup my hostname and domain. I had to go in with VI to resolv.conf and sysconfig/network. Is there a tool for this? #3) How do I figure out which board is which. Other than looking at the MAC address and using PCISNIFFER to then relate that to one of the boards (well, one 'builtin'). Also how do I determine which board is using which IRQ. #4) Finally how can I change which IRQ a board is using. As one of the boards is using the same IRQ as one of my Zaptel clone cards (Tigerjet chips according to PCISNIFFER). #4 leads into the 'more'. This system has TWO FXO clone cards. One is working in AAH, the other AMP does not see. Asterisk CLI flags one as "alarm" RED. and does not report the IRQ of either board. #5) How do I figure Centos has configured these two cards, and what IRQs are used and maybe how to change the IRQs. #6) Then how to get genzaptelconf to properly configure this card. Barrs Law of Recursive futility If you're smart enough to use one of these.... .....you can probably manage without one!
