Configuring X after instal on CentOS4

Many thanks for the help. The effects of my mis-guided efforts to increase the screen resolution past what the hardware would bear have been corrected. I now have a supplementary question. There does not seem to be a man page or an info entry foe system-config-display and I cannot find a reference to it via apropos. How does one inform oneself about this utility or what am I doing wrong in my search for documentation? Video Recording

Hi, I would like to record some training/advertising videos, in a similar format to those offered by CBT Nuggets (and others). Essentially this means I need to be able grab real video (e.g. webcam or DV camcorder, etc) as well as what is on the computer screen (VNC Recorder maybe) and audio. In terms of output I would like it to be in Ogg Theora format as these seems to be supported both on Linux & Windows (though media player plugins), it is also an open standard which beats all the other available formats. Does anyone have any suggestions for such a program, even if it is suite of different programs. My google/freshmeat search results have so far been not very useful. Thanks in advance Lee

cloning drives

Good day everyone - This maybe somewhat OT, but I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good tool for cloning *nix drives. The one thing though is that I will be cloning a smaller drive than the destination drive and would like to distribute the free space accordingly on the new drive. Can anyone recommend anything? Tyan S2891 and CentOS

I am trying to install CentOS to a server that has a Tyan S2891 motherboard, 2 Opteron 875 Dual Cores and 2GB of RAM. I have been able trying to install over a network but the tg3 driver will not load. I then installed from a DVD and on rebooting after the installation I cannot get the network drivers to load and the RAID controller in the PCI slot is not available. It seems that when I do an lspci -tv the only a minimal amount of devices are seen. /var partition and recovery

greetings bryan, did you say that in your experience the /var partition should _not_ be on the extended partition table for "recovery" purposes? - rh

If you have a separate boot partition, I'd not only suggest making it a primary partition for the same reason, but also mounting it read-only for oops-protection. Nope, not at all. I put /var in Extended, LVM and, if you can believe it, even LDM (yes, Windows "dynamic disk" disk label format ;-). I only avoid putting root (/) in anything but a primary partition for recoverability. Even if I use a separate /boot (I rarely do -- I keep my root do only a few GBs max), I still like it outside of any compound disk label. -- Bryan J. system clock uses UTC selection on centos install

hello ya know, i have researched this several times over a coupla sdecades and my brains have fallen out again... ;-> so... all of you that are setting up mail and web servers in the USA or other countries, are you clicking and turning on the system clock uses UTC selection on a centos install?? the reason i ask is i research this about every 3 to 5 years and i never remember what i figured out or thought about it... apologies what is the wisdom and usage on the list please? soooooooo help an old man of 40 out please? ;-) thanks and kind regards! - rh
