RAID6 in production?

Is anyone using RAID6 in production? In moving from hardware RAID on my dual 3ware 7500-8 based systems to md, I decided I'd like to go with RAID6 (since md is less tolerant of marginal drives than is 3ware). I did some benchmarking and was getting decent speeds with a 128KiB chunksize. So the next step was failure testing. First, I fired off memtest.sh as found at <http://people.redhat.com/dledford/memtest.html>. Then, I did 'mdadm /dev/md0 -f /dev/sdo1', and it started to rebuild as it should. I cranked up /proc/sys/dev/raid/speed_limit_min to 15000 so that it would reconstruct in a decent amount of time (the default of 1000 was leading to a 53 hour estimate for the recovery). But memtest.sh started kicking out errors (non-matching diffs). The one caveat is that not all the members of my array were the same size -- one disk is 180GB while all the rest are 160GB. I'm going to test overnight with identically sized RAID members, but I also wanted to see if anyone else is using RAID6. Can't install CentOS4

Hi everyone, My email server is running CentOS 3 and I can't upgrade it to CentOS 4 using the CD's. At first I thought it was the old Megaraid card (that's no longer supported), so I replaced that with a new card. I've tried ISO's from CentOS 4, 4.1 and now 4.2 which I've tested and booted in other machines. Just not this one. I've never had a problem like this before so I'm not sure what information you need to help me debug this. The server stops right after the line about detecting the AGP video. I have tried booting with noprobe and some other kernel options but nothing seems to work. Please let me know what else I can try to get it to boot. Update 4.2 broke LVM

I upgrade using YUM my CentOS 4 system the other night. I was noticing that X wasn't coming up because of a gdk_thread issue (actually, the window manager wasn't starting. I cold get X to start from the command line). Surprised that it took 587MB of downloads, since I was current as of September 29th. When rebooting, I was forced to the login prompt, because my LVM group with my home directory couldn't be mounted. I'm not very familiar with LVM, I had only used it to make one consolidated directory for my 100 and 160GB hard drives. Though lvmdisplay could show the volume group, fsck and mount didn't like it. Oh, and the upgrade didn't fix the thread problem. Anyone have an idea whether it was just me having the LVM problem? I'm currently reinstalling CentOS4 (pre update 1) from CD. At least when running diskdruid, I could mount the LVM group. So, after my install, assuming it is still visible when booting from hard drive, I'll backup those drives before running YUM again. I'f the window manager doesn't start up again, I'll reformat on my next install.

I have a machine running 4.1 did hte update to 4.2 my zaptel settings (asterisk pbx) seemed to have gotten lost in the update. The file was /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules Jerry

4.1 being dropped from mirrors

Hi guys, Just to let everyone know that the CentOS 4.1 tree will be dropped from the mirrors shortly, since 4.2 has now been out for a week. If anyone has their yum config's hardwired to point at 4.1 - those config's will now stop working. The 4.1 repo's will be available at http://vault.centos.org/ once they are removed from http://mirror.centos.org/ ( and all external mirrors ). Newbie : Tar question

How did I overwrite a file to in "tar" file. For example I have file "backup.tar" in my home directory, which contains two file "x.sh" and "y.sh" I made some changes to one of the file "x.sh" and want to update the " backup.tar" I use tar -uvf, but this appends at the end of the tar file, but what I want is replace the file. The only way, I know of right now is, delete the file by issuing the following command tar --delete --file=backup.tar x.sh and then adding the file again using tar -uvf backup.tar x.sh Is there a better way of doing this, on a single command. Thanks in Advance

Easiest virtual mail setup?

Hi. I wish to configure a CentOS 4.1 box to be a mail server. I'd like a setup with virtual mail accounts, using eg. exim, courier and mysql. Do any applications exist that already combine this in an easy to deploy manner (yum as far as possible)? I've seen XAMS.org but that's discontinued. Br, Morten

I had the the duuplicate rpms happen on a x86_64 install and rpm didn't crash to cause it. I basically listed all installed rpms and removed the older versions of the rpms that were dupilcated and did another yum update and all seems ok. What I'm doing is using rpm -V to verify the packages that are duplicated. For example, the newer glibc package seems to verify just fine. And the old gives a lot of errors. # rpm -V glibc-2.3.4-2.13 ........C /usr/lib64/gconv/gconv-modules.cache .......T. c /etc/rpc ........C /usr/lib/gconv/gconv-modules.cache # rpm -V glibc-2.3.4-2.9 .......T. c /etc/rpc S.5....T. /lib/i686/libc-2.3.4.so S.5....T. /lib/i686/libm-2.3.4.so Can I assume yum installed the newer version and just wasn't able to remove the old entry somehow ? Hi, I asked yum to update all packages on my CentOS 4.1 system and glibc was among them. Yum crashed in the middle and now I've some packages installed twice: 2 zlib-1.2.1.2-1.2 2 ncurses-5.4-13 2 mysql-4.1.10a-2.RHEL4.1 2 libstdc++-3.4.4-2 2 libstdc++-3.4.3-22.1 2 libselinux-1.19.1-7 2 libgcc-3.4.4-2 2 libgcc-3.4.3-22.1 2 glibc-2.3.4-2.9 2 glibc-2.3.4-2.13 2 e2fsprogs-1.35-12.2.EL4 2 device-mapper-1.01.04-1.0.RHEL4 2 device-mapper-1.01.01-1.RHEL4 Running yum again it complains about a package conflict: Finished Transaction Test Transaction Check Error: file /usr/share/man/man1/asn1parse.1ssl.gz from install of openssl-0.9.7a-43.4 conflicts with file from package openssl-0.9.7a-43.2 This system was beatiful now I've that, ugh :( Any idea about how to fix that ?
